This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this test is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The "Guest User" login created by "Find My Mac" is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

  • MacBook Pro 2.5 Ghz incredibly slow

I'm having a chronic problem with this MacBook Pro 2.5 Ghz Intel Core i5. (I'm running Mac OS X 10.9.5, with 4GB of RAM.)
It can take 15 seconds to open a Safari tab; it can take a few minutes to launch Mail. Sometimes I even type faster than the machine can keep up with. Rebooting will help -- but not for that long.
In the Activity Monitor, nothing seems to be sucking CPU (and the fan rarely runs). In the Memory tab of the Monitor, I see this:
    Physical Memory: 4.00 GB
    Memory Used: 3.99 GB
    Virtual Memory: 6.69 GB
    Swap Used: 2.8 MB
    App Memory: 1.94 GB
    File Cache: 227.3 MB
    Wired Memory: 706.2 MB
    Compressed 1.11 GB
    My EtreCheck report is below.
Anyone have any ideas? Thanks for your advice.

Sorry that this took a while. Things are so bogged down that it's hard to navigate.
Here's a Console record from when I was just waiting for Firefox to open up after I clicked on the link in an e-mail to return to this discussion forum -- beachball city!

  • I'm unable to burn DVDs on my MacBook Pro 2.16 GHz, 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

    Hello all,
I'm unable to burn DVDs on my MacBook Pro 2.16 GHz, 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM running 10.4.8. When I go to burn a DVD I get one of two codes 0X8002006D, 0X80020022, why is that a 3,000 CPU cant burn a DVD. My Mac is total up to date with all software and firmware. I saw in the Discussions that I'm not the first person to have this issue but I don't see an answer from Apple, I'm pretty sure it not the DVDs (Memorex DVD-R 16X) because my ****** pc can burn them and it was a 100 pack that I used about 50 from it that I burn on both Macs and the ****** PC. I also have a Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5 with 2.5 GB DDR SDRAM running 10.4.8 which is also unable to burn them and it also comes up with the same errors. I have not had this issue until I updated my Macs to 10.4.8, PLEASE HELP.
    Thanks,
    Coons

Yes I can play CDs and DVDs but I was not able to burn a 4.01GB folder, I have since decreased the folder size to 3.75 and was able to burn the DVD. I'm creating another just to double check, my G5 was unable to complete the task and I also gave a shot at a 2.77GB folder and it failed I also gave a 200Mb file a chance but it still did not burn. I was able to burn the same 200MB file on a CD, PLEASE I NEED HELP.

  • Flash player crashing my macbook pro

    I have a late 2007 mbp 3,1.
Playing flash video *always* crashes my macbook pro, not immediately but after a few flash player clips. It does not crash the browser but the whole system, and I get a gray screen telling me in different languages I need to hold down the power button to turn off and restart my mac. I have spent hours trying to track down why this happened but to no avail.
The *only workaround* I know is to use the flash player marked flashplayer10r45_2. I have tried all other versions and even excitedly all beta versions, but this problem remains unresolved. And now Firefox 4 won't even accept this version anymore.
    - Is anyone else experiencing this?
-- Do you have a workaround? (one to force FF4 to use the old player or to prevent crashes with any player)

I seem to have solve my issue and wrote it up here http://submanifolds.blogspot.com/2011/04/coolbook-on-macbook-pro-15-22-ghz.html
Long  story short: I use coolbook, and my settings worked for all programs  under heavy loads, but not for flash content, I think that switching cpu  frequencies went a little too fast and the cpu voltage switching could  not keep up, but this is just a guess. I solved it by increasing the  voltages for the upper frequencies a bit and now my computer does not  crash anymore when playing flash. The flash plugin does crash  occasionally, but I consider this normal since I have never seen it  crashing on its own without taking down the whole system with it.
    I hope this helps (anybody)

Safari 5.0.6 repeatedly crashes.  MacBook Pro 10.5.8  I've emptied cache and reset to no avail.  I've tried solutions found in other threads but the more advanced don't seem to apply to me. Help, please.

Not sure what other tests they could run for me. I've pretty much run all the tests I can using Drive Genius and Tech Tool Pro 5. Is there anything they use that I don't know about??

Is there a known procedure to do this? Any tips or feedback?

    1. Make a backup, open App Store and purchase Mountain Lion. When its download finishes, close the installer and open Lion Diskmaker to create a bootable USB drive with Mountain Lion.
    2. Press Option key while your Mac is starting, select the external drive and open Disk Utility.
    3. Select Macintosh HD in the sidebar and erase the drive.
    4. Close the window and install Mountain Lion

I have a macbook pro 2.4 ghz intel core 2 duo 2010 13" aluminum with 8gb of memory and a 250gb hard drive running version 10.6.8 with safari 5.1.4. Safari will open up intermittently on its own. System preferences and the dock isn't set up to start safari. Can't figure out why this is happening. Had reloaded system from scratch and noticed this happening lately.

Remove iAntiVirus, then reboot, see if it's better.

  • Recently, PS CS5 keeps crashing my MacBook Pro as soon as I start working.

Lately, PS CS5 seems to be the villain crashing my MacBook Pro 10.6.8. It doesn't happen with other software. I have run Diagnostics which didn't find any issues. I have upped the RAM on PS to almost 95%. I am thinking of buying new RAM but would like to avoid that if I can. thx.

Reboot the computer holding the option key (just like Capt Fred says) select OS X Lion as the Startup Disk in System Preferences
If you select the Startup Disk of Lion and reboot and still have a issue, it's likely you have a corrupt System Preferences plist file and it's not saving your changes. Please report that if's your issue, I'll show you how to recreate that file again.
    You can also
Reboot the computer holding the command (4 leaf clover looking) and the r keys down, you'll boot into the Lion Recovery Partition.
You can use Disk Utility to select and First AID >Repair and Repair Permissions.
See if you can boot normally or not. If not then:
    For File Recovery
Your going to need a blank external hard drive equal too or slightly larger than your internal drive.
Your also going to need a strong, fast, stable Internet connection to re-install Lion from Apple's servers, and your AppleID and password.
Hold command r and get into Lion Recovery Partition and use Disk Utility (careful) to select your external drive
Erase>Security option > Zero all Data, wait as it takes sometime to finish and checks the drive.
The Partition tab > click box, 1 partition, option GUID, format OS X Extended Journaled and give it name "External Lion" and click Apply.
    Next Quit Disk Utility
Install Lion onto the external drive reboot the computer and hold the option key down, select the external drive to boot from and setup the same user name as before on the internal drive.
Now access the internal drive of Lion and grab your files.
You can use the same procedure to erase Lion on the internal drive and reinstall Lion, all your programs and files from the external drive.

  • Will the ram from a "macbook pro 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo" work in a "MacBook Pro 2.2GHz Quad-core Intel i7"

I have a 2008? MacBook Pro 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB ram.  Can I use 2 GB ram from the old machine in a new MacBook Pro 2.2GHz Quad-core Intel i7 ?
    /bc

    Very likely not.
RAM gets improved over time like everything else, so if the RAM is too old it won't be compatible with newer machines.
TO confirm, use Crucial.com and punch in each machine, then read the RAM requirements and specifications, if they match, then your good.
But I'm willing to bet they won't be beause of the age difference between the two machines.

  • Macbook Pro 2.2 GHz Core 2 Duo initiates spontaneous start up from shut down

Peculiar behavior from a "new to me" Macbook Pro 2.2 GHz Core 2 Duo . Having purchased this from a local chap , I have begun to personalise the device , naturally . I have come across this profoundly unreasonable behavior , if it can be called anything a "Spontanious Start Up" will do for now . Occurring after employing a software shutdown , being previously removed from a power source , this has now twice resulted in indirectly observing that the computer spontaniously started up while I was away from it . This is about the extent of individualistic behavior exercised by the device that I am aware of in its less than one week of welcome into the house .
There is a cat whose legerdemain lies in eating , sleeping , biting , shedding fur , and occasionally reminding mice who is the predator . Smokies interests though vital have not been , aside from attractively swinging , feckless wires , directed towards learning about computers .
If there is an explanation I would certainly be edified in entertaining a cause as none , practically , are apparent to me . Aside from evil malware commanding the computer to do its bidding I have no plausible idea .
That this seems quite contrary to ordinary domestic electronic device behaviors , with no results in an identical google search . This issue strikes me as presenting a possible unfriendly , specifically unwanted , idiosyncracies .
Thank you for taking the time to read this . FRP

It might deteriorate until the button doesn't work at all, or it might not. It will just be annoying in the mean time.
As far as the console logs go, I've never been able to identify this particular issue by trawling through them. And I think the reason for that is that it just logs it as Power On / Shutdown.
Aside from that there really isn't anything I can think of that would help you diagnose this problem further.
