Code 10 This device cannot start message

Hard wipe of hard disk and reinstalls of OS and iTunes all OK. USB hubs OK for other devices but when any iPod is plugged in I get the above message through the Device Manager - the Apple USB device is shown but with the dreaded yellow ! mark and "This device cannot start - code 10". Any ideas?

  • Pavilion dv9700 DVD/CD ROM stopped working: Code 10 (This device cannot start.)

I have a HP Pavilion dv9700 running Windows 7 where the DV)D/CD ROM drive fails to be detected. I can still get it to open and close. The device manager gives an error: Code 10 (This device cannot start). I read somewhere that iTunes upgrades can cause DVD problems in HPs, and I did upgrade iTunes a couple of days ago. I did upgrade the BIOS a few moments ago, but it didn't help. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Thank you for the responses! Sorry it took me so long to implement--I wanted to back everything up first before messing with the registry. Following the instructions to delete lines in the registry AND uninstalling iTunes allowed for the DVD/CD ROM to pop up with an exclamation mark in my Device Manager. Updating the driver did not help as the computer said the driver was up-to-date. Mysteriously, when I rebooted, the DVD/CD ROM disappeared from the device manager again. I forgot to mention in the initial post that the DVD/CD ROM light blinks steadily at about two blinks/second. Any other ideas? I am wondering if this is a hardware failure now.

  • In device manager it says code 10 - this device cannot start (read message)

In device manager next to the icon for pioneer DVD-RW DVR K17A Device it has a yellow ! triangle and when i click on it, it says this device cannot start code 10. I got the laptop in June and hadnt noticed the problem til now. When i followed instructions to possbily install updated drivers/software i did so but was told i am up to date.
    Thanks

    Hi,
I had this exact problem yesterday. I suspect you're running Vista right? The other guy made a good point about saying what machine you've got and what OS you run, so I offer this advice with the disclaimer that I can't be 100 per cent sure it's your problem. However, I've had the exact same problem (referencing the "code 10") recently on my laptop which runs Vista. I called up support and they said there's a bunch of software, especially for things like MP3 players and digital cameras, which is compatible with vista +but+ causes the DVD / CD drive to stop working. He directed me to a page that talks you through a registry patch, which both he and the page itself advises is a little risky. That said, I did the patch and now the DVD / CD drive works. Or that is, it actually reads the DVD before citing some other reason why it can't be played (some worthless advice about reducing screen resolution and colour quality - haven't got any ideas about that have you?).
Here is the address of the page with the registry patch:
    support.microsoft.com/kb/929461
Again, I'm not a techie, I'm not at all expert about dealing with computer probs and since I don't know what OS you're running and on what machine I can't be sure this applies to you. But it seems like it does.

  • USB "This device Cannot Start."

Ok so I use my T510 for work and that includes interfacing with USB data collecting tools that use 'generic' HID drivers to function. No issues till now.
Today however with my new device I am getting a Code 10 "This device cannot start." Error.
So I tried it on my non Lenovo desktop, worked fine. Tried it on my old Dell Laptop, works fine. Tried it on the secritary's Compaq, works fine. Tried it on a T510 identical to mine and it doesn't work.
Looking around the driver data and trying everything from deleting everything under USB the only difference in settings and driver files is on the Lenovo computers it uses a file "ApsHM64.sys". Tried removing the file just to see what happended and I basically lost all my USB devices, mouse and keyboard included.
Doing some google searching the file is part of the built in Lenovo applications. So I've been ripping most of them out, as I've bypassed them anyway. Still no luck!
    Any help would be AWESOME!
    Thanks!

    hey joetama,
have you tried going to the device manager and reinstalling the USB drivers using the Rollback Drivers?
If you did, was there any errors during the installation?
I would recommend doing an update of your BIOS as well as the Chipset, if you haven't done so ?

  • IPad2 on Windows 7 : MTP USB Device = This device cannot start. (Code 10)

    Hi Guys,
I want to access to the Internal Storage of my iPad 2 on Windows 7.
But I have an error with the MTP USB Device => This device cannot start. (Code 10)
So I cannot see my iPad in Windows Explorer.
I tried many actions from Forums :
update the driver to the "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver" located in "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers"
delete the upper and lower filters in REGEDIT : {36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000}.
stop and restart the service "Apple Mobile Device"
But as soon as I connect again the iPad there is the same error message after Installing device driver software => "Device driver software was not successfully installed" : MTP USB Device : Fail
Is there someone who get the solution ?
    Thank you for you help
    Stephane

I have a similar problem, only mine is Code 31 for the MTP USB Driver.  The Apple driver loads fine, and I'm able to sync with iTunes, but I can't connect to the device as a drive and copy the photos off of it.
I've tried nearly everything at this point that has been suggested in other threads, and nothing has seemed to work.

    I've tried enabling/disabling UAC.
I've run the drivers as an admin.
I've formatted a few times just to make sure no driver conflicts.
Also I've tested the card on another PC running XP sp3 works fine.
PCI slot works fine as well tested with an ethernet card.
    You've tried about everything.
Did you try to disable any non essential onboard devices (HD Audio, LAN, additional SATA/IDE controller etc)?
What about installing XP on a spare dri've?

  • This device cannot start. (Code 10) Status Device Power Failure for Intel (R) Audio Display

Hi I just bought HP Envy M7 Sleekbook last week and upgraded from 8.0 to 8.1 for Windows 8.
Now I have no sound and this is the error message I get:
This device cannot start. (Code 10) Status Device Power Failure  (for  Intel (R) Audio Display)
under Sound, Vieo and Game Controllers in the Device Manager.
Anyone else having this issue after upgrading?
Getting a new lappy is stressful enough but to alreay have issues is ridiculous
If the upgrade is not the issue could something have happened in transit? (I have an issue with the way Best Buy packed it for shipment and wonder if it could have been compromised)
Any help is appreciated. Or should Ibe taing this back to best buy and have them address it?
    Thanks
    Pam

Ahmed, if your HP Envy has an Intel processor chances are it will be necessary to download new drivers for both sound and chipset due to compatibility issues with Windows 8.1. After 4-1/2 hours on the phone with various technical agents and a lot of frustration I finally got one who had the knowledge and training to resolve my issue. I believe he downloaded the new drivers from the HP support site. Good luck!!

Code 10 is a default error code that Device Manager generates when the operating system cannot determine which specific error code to return after an issue occurs.
    Problem
The problem can  range from hardware failure to software config.
Here is the MS article with further info on code 10 here.
    Solution
Updating the Driver could solve the issue is some cases.
Visit Lenovo.com to download and install Ethernet latest driver.
    Troubleshooting
If you have the factory install(if you haven't installed your own windows on unit), you should be able to access the recovery partition by pressing the blue ThinkVantage Button in the top left hand corner of the keyboard when the computer show the Thinkpad screen(when computer is first coming on) -> further info on accessing partition here.
Once in the recovery partition you can click "open browser" to attempt to connect to the internet there. The recovery partition has a completely different set of settings and drivers to use for the Ethernet device. If you can access the internet here than the problem is definitely with the software.
There is a "diagnose hardware" option on the left as well that allows you to run PCdoc to test hardware as well.

  • Audigy 2 value "This device cannot start (code 10) after installation and no so

after installing this card I get a "This device cannot start (Code 0)" message in device manager. I disabled the onboard sound in the bios, installed using the CD and rebooted the computer. But still no sound. When using this method on another computer the installation went smoothly. Since it was still not installing on this computer I tried different PCI slots (keeping in mind that it is not suppose to be installed in the PCI slot adjacent to the AGP slot). I've tried everything I can think of and I still get a "This device cannot start (Code 0)" message under the driver in device manager and no sound whatsoever. Please help because if I can't get it to work I'll have to return it. Thank you.

I did manage to get mine working finally, it was pretty stupid of me....
Anyway I made sure the creative disk was in the dri've and then when my comptuer said "found new hardware" i pointed to the dri've and made it install the driver. Well that did work and it did say it installed the hardware, but it still didnt work. I then took it into my brother computer did it the exact same way and it worked fine. I finnaly brought it back to my PC and installed it one more time. it did the same exact thing. But this time i opened up the disk and installed the driver direct from the disk menu, after reboot it worked like a charm. Thought that was a tad strange, but it worked, maybe if someone makes the same mistake as me this will help.
Card is good, not much of a step up from my li've 5., but that card is going in a friends PC so its no biggie.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hello Manu,
I'm sorry to hear that you are having so many issues with getting your Expresscard 8360 working on your Lenovo. I recommend that we first look into Device Manager in more details. You mentioned that there were question marks (?) on certain devices. This usually means that there are devices on your PC that do not have any associated hardware drivers. For the Expresscard 8360, the drivers should be native to the Windows system, so I am unsure if those "?" do belong to this portion of the system. We can test this out by removing the expresscard 8360 and see if the "?" are still present. These "?" can be from the internals of the PC or modules that you've attached. If you've restored your operating system recently, it could be from the peripherals of your computer in which case you will need to find and install the chipset drivers. This can also be from the modules that you in your chassis, assuming that you haven't installed the necessary drivers for them, in which case you can find them on the Driver CD you have.
The exclamation mark (!) in Device Manager usually signifies a problem with getting the hardware started/operational. From your earlier posts I believe that the "!" is related to the Error Code 10 that you are receiving. Assuming that the correct power sequence was performed, chassis then PC, this is representative of a BIOS compatibility issue. Essentially this is occuring because the BIOS of the motherboard is not correctly allocating the necessary resources to all the devices as it is supposed to. Since you already have the latest BIOS, I would recommend that you try using the MXI Express Compatibility Software, here ni.com/beta. This is something that National Instruments created in order to correct for the incorrect resource allocation of the PC. It is not a beta program, it is only on the site so that we can manage it more easily. I have seen Lenovo T60 laptops work with this software installed.
Let me know if this helps
    Thanks

  • Network Adapters - This device cannot start (Code 10)

    Hello,
I have a W510. It has worked OK for about 4 months. Started getting VERY SLOW - especially on start up.
I ran the Uniblue Powersuite to try to speed things up. Didn't seem to help.
I believe I have all the latest updates for both Lenovo and Windows 7 x64 Professional.
My 2 USB ports located on the side of the laptop are suddenly not working. The device manager shows the following devices all with "This device cannot start (Code 10):
    - Renesas Electronics USB 3.0 Root Hub
    - Microsoft ISATAP Adapter
    - Microsoft Teredo Tunneling Adapter
    - Microsoft 6to4 Adapter
It would not allow me to reinstall so I just deleted all 4 of these.
When I did the reboot, they are all still missing, but the USB ports are now working (there is now a NEC Electronics USB Root Hub). I guess doing the job?
But, I'm concerned about the other network adapters being missing.
Additionally, today I plugged in my Apple iPod and now have the same (Code 10) on this device.
Please help me. It looks like all the Microsoft and Apple drivers are using the same date and version file - it this strange?
They all show 6/21/2006 version 6.1.7600.16385 - so what's up with this?
    Thank you so much!

    hey DTTODGG,
since you have uninstalled the drivers under device manager, were you able to use the "update drivers" ?
Anyway, is your system running on Win7 .. if it is, I believe that Win7 should have installed some generic drivers for you.
Also could you check under the properties of your Network Adapter, is the device enabled ? If it isn't, enable it.

  • "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" 6th gen nano ?

    Hello!
I recently purchased a used ipod nano 6th gen.  It was working great by itself but it won't connect to my laptop.  Here's the short story:
Ipod worked fine out of the box.  Is not recognized by Windows7.  Installed and reinstalled the driver, no effect.  iPod does not charge from the laptop of from the power outlet.  I have itunes version 11.2.2.3 but the ipod has not been able to connect or be recognized by itunes yet.
Here's the Long story w/ the details:
    1.  Before I connected it to anything with the cable, I was able to use all of the features and played the radio it worked fine.
    2.  It began to give the low battery warning.
    3.  I plugged it into my laptop with the usb cable for the first time.
    4.  Windows (7) gave the error window pop-up:  "USB Device not Recognized."
    5.  If I click on that error pop-up window the next window says "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"
    6.  If I open Device Manager, it shows one of the USB ports name is "Unknown Device".  If I leave the nano plugged into the USB, the device manger window appears to update every 10s or so and alternates between displaying the port name "Unknown Device"and not displaying the port named "Unknown Device".
    7.  If I click on device properties of the "Unknown Device" USB port from the Device manager screen, I see that the error also alternates between "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)" and "Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)"
    8.  When attached to the USB port the nano screen alternates between 3 displays, 1 - "low battery", 2 - the apple logo, 3 - the home menu, which is operational.  The battery meter symbol shows 0 power and does not indicate charging.
    9.  If I unplug the nano it does not turn on with the sleep/wake button, I think due to depleting the battery.
    10.  If I plug the nano into the wall charger, the screen alternates between the home menu which is operational and the apple logo.  The battery symbol shows 0 power and does not indicate charging.
    11.  I followed some troubleshooting steps, on the "Device Properties" window I see the following information:
    Driver Provider: Microsoft; Driver Date: 6/21/2006;  Driver Version: 6.1.7601.18328;
    12.  If I select "Driver Details" button, a window appears that says"No Driver files are required or have been loaded for this device"
    13.  I found trouble shooting steps on the apple website to install the driver, which I followed.  I navigated to the folder with the driver as recommended from the apple website and selected it. C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers  "usbaapl", then selected "Apple iPod USB Driver" from the list to install.
    14.  I get the error window titled "Update Driver Warning" which explains installing the driver is not recommended as Windows cannot verify it is compatible with my hardware, but I proceed with "yes".
    15.  Next window titled "Update Driver Software - Apple Modbile Device USB Driver" shows the error "Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device; Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it; Apple iPod USB Driver; This device cannot start. (Code 10)" and it suggests to download a new driver.
    16.  Next, I uninstalled the driver and followed all of those steps and it indicated success, also chose delete driver software option.
    17.  If I plug in the nano at this point I get the indication windows is trying to install driver software, and then the same error occurs as when I first plugged it in "USB Device not Recognized." and I can go through all of the steps again.
    18.  The Driver details button gives the following info:
Provider:  Apple, Inc.; File Version: 1,64,0,0; file names usbaapl.sys & usbaaplrc.dll; driver version 6.0.9999.65.
    19.  Now the device manager window alternates between showing and not showing the USB port named "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver".
    20.  If I look under Devices and Printers, it shows a generic icon with the title "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver" with a yellow exclamation mark and the status shows "Needs troubleshooting"!
Can anyone help me I will give you any detail and info you want!
    thanks!
