Codec could not be opened

I thought FCE was supposed to support 1080i50 HDV but when I try to play a clip I get a message saying 'codec could not be opened'. I can't play this clip in QT either.
The clip format is: HDV 1080i50 (1440 x 1080) 25 fps
How do I import this material so I can work with it in FCE?

Hi(Bonjour)!
If you don't own Final Cut Studio 2 you can't open nor convert HDV with any application.
The transcoding process to Apple Intermediate Codec is handled upon capturing process within FCE. That's what spec say: FCE supports capture from HDV tape (as HDV is a format designed to be stored mainly on tapes).
Your friend may convert native HDV to Apple Intermediate Codec from his Final Cut Pro app.
As AIC give huge files (but your friend can copy them on external hard drive)may be he can convert footage to H.264 and burn them on data DVD. This material can be converted with MPEG streamclip to AIC or imported into FCE (with rendering).

  • Codec could not be opened error in red

Out of the blue, suddenly the screen went completely green during playback but an error message said codec could not be opened. The error message had a red background. Have audio but no picture. It just stays green. At first i was thinking perhaps it was a bad chroma key becasue I am using green screen clips (Music video) but I'm all thumbs as far as codecs go. i see there's many other posts about this but their solutions so far haven't applied to me. I'm using Final Cut 7.0.3, running OS 10.6.8 on a 2 x 3.2 ghz Quad-Core Intel, 16 gigs of ram. been fine but just suddenly conked out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you done any software or OS updates?  What format are you working with?  There have been many reports of this sort of thing happening recently after people have done a software update.  Do some searching here and you'll find many posts and a few possible solutions.

  • Can't open video file - Codec could not be opened

    Hello,
I have just purchased a camcorder, and can't open the video files that it creates. Final Cut Express tells me "Codec could not be opened". I'm not sure how to find and install the proper codec
    Some background
    - The files are AVI format
    - Quicktime opens the files, but all it get is a blank screen playback with no sound
    - The files play on my WindowsPC (but what good is that). The PC tells me that the file is H264, 1280x720, 30 frames/s, 681 kbits, 24 bit, AVC H264 format (FFDS compression).
    - The camcorder is a Polariod HD camcorder DVC-00725F. Polariod is no help - they only support Windows (no wonder they have declared bankruptcy)
My computer is an iMac 24
    - Final Cut Express 4.0.1
    - QuickTime 7.6.0
    Thanks for any help

  • Clips were fine, now say "Codec could not be opened"??

    Hi,
I brought some .avi clips into FCE 4 and they were fine during the whole editing process but then a friend was giving us some training and adjusted the audio levels of a few of the clips (by dragging the clips' gray bar) and now the clips say "Codec could not be opened." He even command-z'd everything he'd done (or so we thought). It's also possible that he adjusted more than I thought.
When you play the clips you can hear the audio but the Canvas says "unrendered." I tried to render them but got a message "Codec not found. You may be using a compression type with the corresponding hardware card" and the Canvas and Viewer say "Codec could not be opened."
We're new to FCE so any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

"adjusted the audio levels of a few of the clips (by dragging the clips' gray bar)"
I don't know what this means, but there is nothing that can done within the application that will change the codec or alter the media in any way. The only way for this to happen to change something on the computer itself, something in QuickTime, or changing the location of something.
Look at item properties for the AVIs in FCE and see exactly what it says. See if you can open the AVI media into the QuickTime player and get movie info there to see what QT says about it. Where did you get these files BTW? FCE does not work well with AVIs at all.
The first thing I suggest doing is to trash your preferences and repair permissions.

  • Why is it that when I try to open a project, it says "the project contained a sequence that could not be opened. No sequence preview preset file or codec could be associated with this sequence type"?

It could be opened last night but today it just kept showing "the project contained a sequence that could not be opened. No sequence preview preset file or codec could be associated with this sequence type". I really need to access my video.

Try installing Perian or VLC. Some AVIs require a codec which simply isn't available for Mac OS X.

I recently upgraded my OS to Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and cannot open up .avi files now in Quicktime. Can anyone help?

There are a lot of third party codecs for QT http://www.apple.com/quicktime/resources/components.html
Most of them are "payware" with no guarantee they'll actually do what they claim. I spent hundreds back in the days before QT10 and eventuallty found that EVERYTHING those purchased codecs do... can be done for FREE with VLC media player.

I have loaded some home movies from my video camera and when I try to view these I receive the error message The document “filename:MPG” could not be opened. A required codec isn't available.
I cannot seem to do anything with these files. I can view them on another PC. I have tried to add them to iTunes with no luck, and tried to install an add on for quicktime however it does not download.
    Any suggestions?

Have you tried VideoLAN? It can often play videos that won't play with Quicktime.

Unfortunately, the error message gives no details about what codec might be missing or what it needs.
If the file can't be opened in QT, it only means you cannot use the QT "Inspector" window to check what compression formats were used to create the file. It does not mean you can't use the Finder "Information" window to check on the compression formats or use a third party media information window (e.g., like VLC which will open many compression formats not supported natively by QT) to determine what kind of data is included in the MOV wrapper. If the file cannot be opened in any app, it is usually a good sign that the file itself is corrupted.
It's a stupid error message. Apple should do better than that.
Error trapping is quite extensive but there are still many areas which require human oversight. The message is telling you that either the container has a problem (e.g., not properly terminated, non-standard, or corrupted) or that one or more of the compression formats used is not supported by your current codec component configuration or that the data was encoded using non-standard settings or preferences not supported by QT or that the fourCC code does not match the data contained in the file or that there are timecode inconsistencies, etc., etc., etc. In short there are a near infinite number of possible problems for which it would be very difficult/nearly impossible to program error trapping depending on your sourcing of content and how you process it before it reaches the player app. Think of it like trying to play a BD disc in an DVD player.
I'll call Apple support when I get a chance.
Chances are good that they will end up sending you back here. In any case, it is often a good idea to post a sample file for examination by other QT users. At the very least, they should be able to tell you if the sample file will play on other systems which would indicate whether or not the file itself is bad and under the best of circumstances whould allow them to examing the file in detail for various common problems.

  • "Could not complete the Video Frames to Layers command because the movie file could not be opened."

    I'm using Photoshop CS5 extended.
I've been using that to make gifs. It was fine when I import video frams into layers with the video formats of .mov or .avi. But After I installed OSX 10.6.8, this message comes up everytime I want to import videos: "Could not complete the Video Frames to Layers command because the movie file could not be opened."
So I installed my old OS back which is 10.6.3 but the problem is still there.
May I know what to do to solve this problem because all along I've been fine with making gifs and importing videos until now.
    Please help, thank you.

The computer deities may be trying to say something to you.  GIF is not a video format.
Are you opening video with the same codec that was successfully opened before?

  • *sequence could not be opened...

related to the other discussion thread in reference to the video exports having a blue tint...
due to the blue tint issue - I found that it likely was the graphics card in the laptop that was causing the issue...
so I transfered the CS5 files/projects to another computer and everything is working fine except for the most recent project created...
the project I'm referring to was imported at 1024X728 --- 30 FPS --- square pixel --- progressive...everything the same as the other projects that imported fine with the exception of the frame size (the others were 640X480)...in other words the only difference I set between the video's that have transferred properly and are working is the frame size...
when I try to open the file in question --- a box comes up that says:
This project contained a sequence that could not be opened. No sequence preview preset file or codec could be associated with this sequence type.
now...I know other people have had this issue and one proposed solution had to do with setting the preview codec to AVI...however, my codec is already set to AVI...
so I wanted to see what could be causing this...and potential solutions...
since the only difference (that I'm aware of) between the video's that transferred without any problems and the video in question is frame size...it might be that...
let me know if you're able to help at all - thanks so much...I appreciate it
    -Nino

    Nino,
I'm sorry but I'm not sure I completely understand the issue here.  Assuming that you have video that is 1024x728 and you want to create a sequence of the same size, then one thing you can do is take the footage and drag it to the new item button on the bottom of the project panel.  This will create a sequence according to the characteristics of the clip(s) you chose.
The other thing you can look into is nesting.  If you have 640x480 footage that you want to reside in a 1024x728 sequence and its not working for some reason, you might try taking a 640x480 timeline and nesting it inside the larger one.
Hopefully, one of the above might help you.
