Codec error with h.264

I am trying to export a slide show sequence in FCP 4.5 as a quicktime movie. trying different codecs and file sizes to see what works for best res without jittering the computer. when I export with h.264 odec, i just get "codec error" and nothing happens. I have quicktime 7.0.4 installed.
anyone seen this? any ideas?
and if you have any thoughts on a great codec to export a slide show as a self-contained quicktime movie at a HIGHER res than 720x480 which doesn't slow down the computer, let me know. i have tried at 1280x864 with h.263, mpeg4 and sorensen 3 and they all bog down on my pb 1.25
thanks, all.

and...when I render the sequence with h.264, it works fine, when I export the sequence as a .mov file with current settings (incl h.264) it works fine, when I export as a .mov file with CUSTOM settings and compression set to h.264, I get "codec error".

  • Render error with h.264 and Image sequence

    Hi,
I have simple animation I want to render out. Problem is when I export it as h.264, error happens on one frame like you can see here.
Whith image sequence, Motion will render skipping frames here and there so some part are just fine, but some part are not.
Also some frame has same green error just like with h.264. I'm rendering as PNG.
I also tested rendering as Prores HQ and that one came just fine. Weird isn't it?!?
Any idea what might cause this?
I need h.264 for preview purpose and final result as image sequence...
    Thanks

    Hi,
Thanks for response. Sorry, but I can not share project file since it's client work.
Anyway, I think latest 5.0.3 update might be issue. My Mac setup is OSX 10.7.3 on Macbook Pro (2010) with i7 and GeForce GT 330M.
I have also older Macbook (I think it's 2008 model with only version of unibody Macbook) which has also same OSX 10.7.3, but Motion 5.0.2. Tested with very same project and rendered out without any problem!
So, is there any way to reinstall one step older version of Motion after installing 5.0.3???

  • 'Unknown File' error with H.264 clips from Kodak zi6

    Hi everyone
I'm trying to import some clips taken with a Kodak zi6 into Final Cut Pro, and I'm getting an 'Unknown File' error. The clips are H.264 quicktimes, 720p60 (well, actually 59.94fps). They open & playback in Quicktime Pro without any problems whatsoever, so I can't figure out why FCP doesn't like them. I've just now tried transcoding one to a ProRes422 as well and FCP rejects that as well. Does it have something to do with framerate?
As an aside, I'm not terribly thrilled with the ProRes transcode either, there's a HUGE difference in colourspace for the worse. The H.264 actually looks better and more accurate.
    Any thoughts welcome!

I experienced the exact same problem. However iMovie 08, which has radically reduced functionality imports the files fine. Something that I noticed that might be an issue is that in Quicktime Pro if you "Show Movie Inspector" you will see that the codec of the Zi6 files is listed as "Ambarella AVC encoder." They are NOT listed as H.264. This may be significant. It may be a flavor of H.264 but seems kind of "windows low budget" to me.
Also as a point of clarity, in my experience Final Cut Pro WILL edit H.264 files with no problem. It is not ideal for quality reasons but it works fine.

  • Codec Error issue when Rendering

Greetings. I am receiving a codec error when attempting to render footage. In addition, I have a grey frame with a "+" in the middle where the screengrab should be in the timeline. Finally, in the viewer, on the clips that will not render there is a black X in a white circle at the beginning of the clip. See attached image.
When I attempt to render, I get "Codec Error" with only the option to click "OK".
For a screengrab of the issue go to 24kblack.com/fcp.png

In regards to the error, what codec are you working with?
In regards to the lack of thumbnail, try trashing your thumbnail cache.

  • Updated document about QuickTime errors with After Effects (re: H.264 and hyperthreading)

I just updated "troubleshooting QuickTime errors with After Effects CS5, CS5.5, and CS6" with information about hyperthreading and Apple's H.264 encoder.
The gist is that Apple's H.264 exporter component for QuickTime fails when the computer has a large number of CPUs.

No, this applies to any QuickTime H.264 export. You can export H.264 in a QuickTime .mov wrapper out of AME, too, and it will have this problem.
The various H.264 encoding presets (for YouTube, Blu-ray, Vimeo, iPad, etc.) don't use the H.264 QuickTime component, so this isn't relevant to them.
This problem is just relevant to choosing Apple's H.264 as the video codec when choosing QuickTime as a format. This applies to all software that uses QuickTime, by the way, not just Adobe software.

  • Expoting H.264 from FCP 5.1 "Codec error"

    The Problem:
I am trying to export a QT movie from FCP 5.1 with the H.264 codec
using "export/quicktime movie" and I get a "Codec error" message.
    The Situation:
I am using FCP 5.1 to sequence imported QT movies I have made in Foto Magico (640x480-30 fps-H.264 Codec). I have no problem getting these to run in the timeline as long as I match these sequence settings (they run fine/no rendering needed). When I try to export using "export/quicktime movie" I get a "Codec error" message. My understanding of this export path is that it doesn't recompress clips like the "export/using quicktime conversion" does. It will export a H.264 movie using "export/using quicktime conversion" but it takes forever and I have a lot of media to crunch, Any suggestions?
    Thanks...

  • Rendering to Quicktime h.264 codec Error

Hey, i keep getting this error when i try to render to Quicktime with the h.264 codec from After Effects CS3. I installed the 8.0.2 update but that didn't work.
The error reads: After Effects error: compressing frame of movie - Quicktime codec error(-8960) (44::39)
It comes up usually at the first few frames. It's not just this particular comp. It doesn't work with any.
    Thanks for your consideration.

It tells you that the CoDec is not compatible with Quicktime. What operating system are you on? What version of QT do you use? Does exporting H.264 work from QT Pro or other apps?

  • Error exporting h.264 mp4 with certain file size.

I have tried many times exporting my sequence with h.264 at file size around 5GB. It's a 21 minutes video and when I play them in any players (MPC, QuickTIme) they all stop playing at 16:30 - about 4.3 GB point in the file.
Playback in Premiere Pro is fine. The rendering went smoothly.
    I exported with 36mbps, and Max 40mbps, Profile 5.1. 1920x1080. (Using Vista)
Later for experiment, I export it in 34mbps, and the point where the file fails to play is pushed back about 5 seconds - still around the 4.3 GB point. So I guess I can't export h.264 with file size larger than around 4.3 GB?
Any suggestions? Would appreciate any help.
    Thanks

Did you export your video under 32bit operating system? How about the codec, did you use "h.264" or "h.264 Blueray".
I can't use "h.264 Blueray" because it won't let me render 30fps. And what's your audio codec? AAC?
I just tried to play it on a 64bit linux, no luck. Gave me a set of errors when it passed the 4GB point.

  • Quicktime error -50 with "H.264 for DSP"

    Hello.
When compressing for HD DVD with the profile "H.264 for DVD Studio Pro" (on macosx 10.5.5, QuickTime 7.5.5) I systematically get a QuickTime error -50, about which I am finding no information at all. More, precisely this is what the logs report
    (in com.apple.stomp.transcoder.stomp.log)
... msg="Processing service request error: QuickTime Error: -50"
    (in com.apple.compressor.cluster.admin.log)
    <log ... msg="Handling exception: ... fatal exception = QuickTime error: -50, fail count = 1." />
    <log ... msg="Stopping the failed request." />
This happens with all kind of sources, but only when the setting is "H.264 for DVD Studio Pro". All other settings work as expected. I don't know what to think, possibly an upgrade problem, possibly one of the QuickTime plugins installed on my system might be interfering (but then perhaps the error should occur given a source for all output settings, rather than vice versa, fixed the DSP setting for sources of all kinds). Google doesn't seem to know about this, searching this mailing list hasn't helped, nor grep-ing my system for more expressive error reports.
In way of help, can please anybody:
    (1) confirm that they are able with Compressor 3.0.4 to produce H.264 for DSP
    (2) shed some light on what this QuickTime Error: -50 might be, perhaps by pointing me to log files where some more information is given? (fatal exception -50 is not very helpful, really...)
My interest is of course to learn how to bypass the problem, or alternatively to convince DSP to accept H.264 in HD DVD projects generated by encoders others than Compressor with "H.264 for DSP" profile, or alternatively to understand how to make DSP accept H.264 generated by a third-party encoder (eg x264). Does anybody know?
    thanks

    Hi:
I've been experiencing all sorts of issues with compressor, somewhat like this. I think my quicktime plug-ins are the culprit. Example, I have been exporting directly out of Motion with no problems lately, but when I export to Compressor I see my "Flip4Mac" import window several times, then Compressor either fails to export, or crashes.
I would suggest trying a direct export from FCP or Motion, or whatever your source is. See if that works. Just bypass Compressor and choose your HD DVD option from the export window. It does the trick with Motion.

  • Codec error from photoshop using fade in with final cut pro

I'm trying to render a video, but i get the error "codec error"
The clips are actually still layers coming from photoshop cs2.
The rendering 'breaks' when i try to add a video transition- fade in.
It still doesn't allow rendering even if i use the motion tab to mimic a 'fade in' by increasing the opacity from 0% to 100%

It is possible and very, very simple.
Just mark in and out on the still, allowing for enough extra frames (handles) to make the transitions.
Let's say that you edit a psd, or any still image for that matter, into your Timeline.
You initially decide on a hard cut in and out, with a duration of 5 seconds.
Now you decide to dissolve in and out of the same still instead but you need extra frames for the transition duration:
Double click the still, so that it appears in the Viewer. Click the box at top left that shows 00:00:05:00.
Change it to a duration that will include enough handles. Add your transitions.

  • After Effects render constraints for .mov with h.264 codec maximum dimensions 2000px x 2000px?

Is there anyway I can create  .mov container with h.264 codec with dimensions 3840px by 1080px? When I try rendering from AE it lowers dimensions to under 2000px. Same thing happens when I try to save as from Quicktime. Programs I have access to are Premiere Pro, After Effects, Adobe Media Encoder, and Final Cut.
    Thank you for your help.

Yes, It does seem to be mutliple LDCs. They asked for a final output video as 3840x1080. The  requirements are this and they finally sent this display.
    Basic Requirements
Ensure the resolution of the file (width and height in pixels) matches the specs provided exactly, even small deviations can result in poor quality playback or no playback at all
.MOV animations must use H.264 encoding
We recommend 15fps (frames per second) for animation
File size should be roughly 1 Megabyte per second or less, i.e. a 10 second .MOV file should be 10MB or less.
Thank you for your help, I will ask on the other forum.

  • Codec error when rendering stills

I have a sequence with a timebase of 30fps. I import a still .png file for use as a graphic overlay. It has a transparancy channel. It imports with a timebase of 29.97 for some reason.
I drop it on a separate video track in the sequence, and render-that's when I get a "codec error" message. the sequence compressor is set to h.264 and the still is of course .png.
Any hints as to why I am getting this error and how I might fix it? I have tried many formats for importing the still.
    Thanks,
    Matt

Is the still in the RGB colour space or CMTK? It has to be RGB to work.

  • Trying to export a movie compressed with H.264 out of AE

I am having some issues with exporting a movie compressed with H.264. I am using AE CS3. When I output with the settings of this image:
    http://intuitionusa.com/ae.gif
I get an error message that is below in the image.  I have to leave Quicktime in the top settings in the output module and then select H.264 in the format button.  It allows me to render out, but a message appears saying it is better to select H.264 from the "format" dialog box.
    * Also, when I export out to H.264 the file size is much larger than just using quicktime pro.  I think it might be better to export an uncompressed file from AE and then use QT pro to compress but that is going to use up a lot of disc space.
    SHoutzager

You're probably getting that error because of a frame size/codec conflict.
Your comp is 900x600, and the MainConcept codec is looking for a frame size of 720x480 (NTSC DV).
Using the Quicktime wrapper to export the H.264 is a fine optioin, however, AE will not do as good of a job compressing to that codec as Quicktime Pro, or a dedicated compression application would do. AE can only cache a limited number of frames for the compression process (frames before and after the current frame), and as a result, the compression quality and filesize will not be as small as they could be by using a different tool for the job.
As such, your supposition about rendering out an uncompressed/losslessly compressed movie and then running it through QT Pro (or another compression application) yielding superior results was a correct one.

  • Totem 3.6 can't read video because of codec error

since the update of gnome to 3.6 and totem to 3.6.2 I can't watch any video with totem. It plays the sound but no video is showing up.
A dialog pops-up about a codec error all the time like:
The playback of this movie requires a H.264 decoder plugin which is not installed
    or
The playback of this movie requires a MPEG decoder plugin which is not installed
and this happens for every video type.

  • Codec error from photoshop to final cut pro sequence

I'm trying to render a video, but i get the error "codec error"

    Thank you.

You're using DV and your sequence is H.264? Why not have your sequence set to DV?
