Codec for HDV whent missing

I had to do an "archive and install" for my OSX and now I can´t play HDV material (1080i50). When I open the quicktime files I can hear the audio but see only a white screen. Clips that I shot in DV-PAL are still playing fine. When I try to open FCP I get the "Codec not found" error message, although I see the HDV codec in the FCP Easy Setup folder.
Any ideas why my I keep getting this error & how I could fix my problem? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I presume the FCP 5 install is a 5.0.4 version, which is what I see when I open my FCP 5 and check the "About Final Cut Pro" menu. When I found my old FC Studio installation discs I cant find one disc that would specifically be for installing FCP 5. There is the FC Studio installation disc, and then different discs for Motion2, Tutorials, DVD Studio Pro4, Live Type Media, Soundtrack Pro. Have I misplaced a disc for FCP 5 or is it possibly embedded in the FC Studio Installation disc?

  • Codec for HDV to share between apple and pc??

our boss got us 2 G5s and a PC workstation, we can now only share movie files in uncompressed format between different platforms which costs a lot of disk space
is there a CODEC which can be used in both APPLE and PC that encodes HDV in relatively smaller file?
    G5 Dual 2.7GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   FCP 5.04

i'm sure there's codec that use RLE could be
    lossless: ]
but this is not what i want.
i just need the codec that could be shared between
mac and windows and keep most of the quality of HDV
and compression ratio is close to HDV codec itself,
When analog signals are converted into HDV digital data inside the HDV camera, your video is no longer lossless. It's not lossless because HDV is based on MPEG-2, which is not lossless. So, I don't mean to insult you, but your comment is self-contradictory.
or may i ask is there a HDV codec which could be use
    both in mac and windows?
HDV is a codec, so the answer is HDV. Or... As I said before, H.264 may be used to further recompress high-definition video.

The songs you purchased are in AAC format, which Windows Movie Maker cannot handle.  You can use iTunes to make MP3 versions by following this guide:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1550 and the MP3s will work fine.
Note that when iTunes does a conversion it creates a new file and leaves the original in place.  Make sure you are grabbing the new MP3 for your movie and not the original AAC.
Sorry to hear about your grandpa.

  • Sequence settings for HDV 720p 24 fps

Okay, now that the French is gone I'm back on track, but still confused. I've captured my HDV 720p @ 24FPS footage using LumiereHD & it's separated & ready to go. What sequence settings/editing timebase should I use? I've noted people here saying DVCPro, but others said DVCPro is just problemic/not correct for HDV . . . and the Lumiere forum reccomends using the Apple Intermediate Codec, which I think people here said NOT to do . . . and there's a 720p24 option in Lumiere, but not in FCP . . . is it just like using 24p DV where you edit at regular 29.97? My head is turing into goo. Any sage advice, O sage ones? And I'm finishing on DVD, if that's usefull. Thank you!!!

Don't stay nervous for ever, you're missing out on a lot of good stuff.
    1. Repair Permissions.
    2. update to OS X 10.4.8

    Still nervous?
I can't tell you what setting in FCP 5.1 to use, because I no longer have 5.1.
I would convert the HDV to DVC PRO HD 720p.
Editing in native HDV is a pain because of the frame structure.
You will end up with larger files with DVC PRO HD, but since it's all "I-frames" editing and compositing will be much, much faster.

  • Best workflow for HDV 1080/60i/24pA with FCP 5.1.4

I've spent hours trying to find the answer to this specific problem on the discussion forums as well as the FCP user manuals and I can't find it, please help! I've got a Sony HVR-V1U and I recently recorded several hours of footage at 24pA. I would like to edit the footage in 24p, and preferably in a different codec besides HDV and definitely not in AIC. I don't have any experience with Cinema Tools and I can't seem to get any files directly from FCP to Cinema Tools no matter what I transcode the video to. Also, is there any way to transcode the video to ProRes because it is so much faster to render video in ProRes than in HDV.
    Thanks in advance!

Removing pulldown is done during capture if you shot 24pa, and in Cinema tools if you shot 24p. However I don't think that camera shoots a version of 24p that works when you remove the pulldown pattern. I could be wrong, but as I recall, the 24fps video that the v1u shoots isn't exactly the same as that shot by say, a DV camera so might not work removing pulldown. Just looked at the specs at Sony on the camera... it does apparently shoot with a 2:3 pulldown, so after you capture, you might try Cinema tools for the removal. Never heard of anyone doing this with HDV though, so it might be pretty problematic.
That said, you should be able to transcode to ProRes in Compressor, and it should look great. Don't use your computer display to judge the quality of the results though, use an external video monitor. Artifact may show up on the computer's display when it's really not in the video...

  • FCP IMX codec for windows

    Hi guys,
is there any IMX codec for windows so i can easly export my grahics from my PC to FCP without rendering? CMIIW
    Many Thanks,
    Bayu

Happy to help out, but you need to identify what cam or sequence settings you use to create the HD sequence.
HD means so many things, including HDV and DVCProHD.
    What is it?
And what did you choose to export to that create a smaller movie file for use on the PC?
Because it seems you have converted the original footage to something else, otherwise the size would be the same.
You might try an export to h.264 that should work if your friend is using v.7 of QT on Windows.

  • [CS5] Project Manager Trimming not supported for HDV footage?

Yes, I have the licensed version of CS5 Production Premium.
The Premiere Pro "Project Manager" allows you to create a "trimmed" version of your project. That is, only the footage actually used in sequences (along with some handles) is placed in the new, trimmed project. For example, I have a project which uses only 1 second of an 11 second HD Quicktime clip.
original project folder which includes the clip = 352MB.
trimmed project folder is = 26MB
My problem is with a similar project using only a small portion of an HDV clip (M2T):
    original project folder = 232MB
    trimmed project folder = 232MB
There is nothing I can find int the Adobe help file regarding limitations for HDV files with the trim feature. This problem is not limited to CS5. I experienced it also in CS4 but resolving it was not a priority at the time. But I now have a large number of projects I wish to archive.

Jeremy, I am assuming that this is harder to solve, because it gets into Premiere and/or the mainconcept codec being used, not providing smart rendering.  You can't just take the middle of an mpeg clip without rendering.  Premiere could do this, but there would be a quality hit.  Is there any chance we will see a more sophisticated approach to mpeg inside Premiere?  And I am also interested in whether the long gop formats are/might be addressed differently from others.
Todd, here is the CS5 help file that should have this.
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/premierepro/cs/using/WS1c9bc5c2e465a58a91cf0b1038518aef7-7c74a .html
    And it does not.
In earlier versions (I'm still CS3, and I think it was CS3 in which there was this discussion), I found that you could not work around this by creating a subclip.  In fact, the original full clip would be repeated for each instance of the subclip.
If someone adds a comment to this help entry, and it is a weak attempt, do you edit the comment so that the help file is most useful?

  • HT5848 What is the sampling rate and codec for iTunes Radio. Is it lossless encoded?

What is the sample rate and codec for iTunes Radio? Is it lossless encoded?

I have to agree with you.  There are several forum discussions on bit rate being as high as 256 kbps but I don't see how it could be more than 96 kbps based on the poor sound quality I'm hearing.  I'm comparing it to an internet radio station that is 128 kbps and sounds much better.
    Am I missing something?

  • Best codec for DVD export for editing

If I want to burn DVDs for a client who will want to edit the footage later, what's the best codec for that?

What editing application will they be editing with?
DVD's aren't the best archival solution. They hold 4.7GB of info, and that is like 20 min of DV quality footage. Forget about HD quality...Oh, unless you use HDV. That's the same data rate

  • Best codec for green screen in FCP or Motion

First--I tried to search for posts on this topic, but I swear I cannot figure out how to search -the discussion forums- on this site. Anyone want to tell me what I'm missing?
My main question is about codecs for keying green screen in FCP. I have always just worked with DV but it does not key very well. I am about to go into a project that involves editing 25-30 hours of studio footage down into about 5 hours of finished product, all of which is going to be shot against a green screen. We're using high-quality non-digital NTSC cameras for the shoot and encoding to hard drive, which gives us the option of using a different codec. Since we need to capture so much footage (various takes, camera angles, etc), I don't have the budget for the hard drive space required to capture it all uncompressed, but I'm looking for something better than DV.
I've seen some people are using DVCPRO 50 for green screen work, and I think I could get all the footage onto a single 1TB hard drive in that format.
Is DVCPRO 50 significantly better than DV for green screen? Is there another codec which would be better to use with FCP/Motion, but still keep my data under 10MB/sec?

Is the difference between 4:1:1 and 4:2:2 some part of what causes the blockiness in DV?
No...the DV compression is what causes the blockiness of DV. It is compressed 5:1, and how it is compressed is the cause of the compression. Mind you, if you shoot to DV tape, then capturing that as DVCPRO 50 will not get rid of the blockiness. that is there when you record to tape. It will convert the footage from 4:1:1 to a 4:2:2 color space for better color control when keying and color correcting. But much of the color information is already lost when you shoot to DV tape. Capturing as DV50 will certainly help, however...and be TONS better than keying as straight DV.

  • SLLOWWWW encode for HDV to SD for DVD

I am now in the 2nd day of waiting compressor2.3 encode a 2 hour program I shot & edited in HDV.  I am outputting it for a SD DVD.  The longer I watch it encode the longer the time remaining grows and slower the encode process seems to be.
When I went to bed last night it was at 48% complete only to wake up this morning and it is now at 49%.
I set the encode tabs using the apple settings for encoding a 150 minute 16:9 video.  I believe it is a 2 pass setting. I am only processing the dolby 2.0 (which has completed) and the mpeg-2 vid.
I don't recall if I chose to de-interlace the video, but now on second thought if I did that may have been stupid because I'm not sure 1080i is interlaced...
My question or concern is, is this length on compression normal?  I haven't compressed a full HDV program before.  But even my longest SD compressions were under 24 hours.  I expected this to take a while but at this rate I am worried it won't be done until next Friday and then, who knows if it will have worked and I need to get it to a client by next week.
    Thanks for your input.

FWIW, an improved FCS 2 (fcp - compressor) workflow with HDV content (I have a HVR-Z1P).
On advice from others and other forums, I do the following when working with FCP and HDV in FCS 2.
    (option A) -
    • import/ingest the footage as HDV.
    • batch convert the HDV and RENAME the footage (from CAPTURE) in to APPLE PRORES 422 codec
    • work the time line with output codec APPLE PRORES 422
    • submit sequence (s) to COMPRESSOR (works fast)
    • when finished, use MEDIA MANAGER to consolidate footage, and purge the HDV footage (if you have limited disk space)
    (option b) -
    • in FCP log the footage
    • import the offline footage using APPLE PRORES 422
    • work the project in APPLE PRORESS 422
    • submit PRORES 422 sequqnces to COMPRESSOR
    • watch cmopressor work this.
I dont have a tehnical explanation fort htis ony an optinion that for HDV to a MULTIPASS H.264 AVC transcode from FCP takes ages on this dual QUAD core (and worse on my old g5 QUAD).
Other methods you could try vary to taste.. THese are:
    • from the HDV sequqnce - expoert a QUICKTIME REFERENCE MOVIE - sometimes is quick but most of the time takes ages... then
    • set up a QMASTER VIRTUAL cluster with an instance for every two (2) cores you have on all machines in the cluster (plenty of info on this) in these forums. . On this octo, I have 4 x instances for example and one instance on each of the MBP's (unmanaged services).
    • submit thereference movie to this compressor cluster.
Others have found better experience submittimg a SELF CONTAINED QUICKTIME movie as above.
    post your results.

  • HT3775 where do i go to get needed sound codec for avi to play on mac?

where do i go to get needed sound codec for avi to play on mac?

There is no single codec for videos that have .avi extensions. AVI is a container format, not a specific type of file. You'll have to find out what codec was used for the videos you want to view to determine what you need. Note that not all codecs for the various .avi movies are available for QuickTime.
If you want to try "hit and miss", Perian, which rolls several codecs into one package, might work. Otherwise, you'll have to determine what codec was used for that audio track.
If you just want to play the movie any way you can, you can also give this player a try:

  • Intermediate codec for Premiere on MAC

What if you want to edit different sources and still have realtime playback and no loss of quality... On PC you use Cineform but on Mac ? Pro-Res works realtime only on Final Cut.. So what do you suggest for workin in Premiere on a Mac (possibly free) and keep realtime playback and all the quality? We are talking of HD footage (XDCAM)  and HDv footage. XDCAM plays realtime (though only in MP4 wrapper and not MOV wrapper) while HDV doesn't. I could obviously convert HDV to MP4 XDCAM or both to P2 (this also is read realtime).. but XDCAM will not keep all the quality. Can somebody suggest something?

This is a few weeks old so I hope you've found a good answer, but for the benefit of others you have a couple options. First you can actually get a copy of the Cineform codec for Mac buy purchasing a copy of Neoscene for $99 (from Cineform). This would be my recommendation. You other option is to download Blackmagic's codecs for Avid's DNxHD codec packs (both are free on their websites). You can use MPEG Streamclip to transcode your files after you capture, or if you're tapeless, after you copy your files over. But a couple QT updates ago, I lost any DNxHD 36 playback...don't know why, don't care to test it.
Your system's more than fine to editt HDV natively (not sure who'd want to though)...my suspicion is that unlike FCP, Adobe uses their Media Player instead of Quicktime as the native video player for the NLE and since Mac's core is Quicktime that results in some sort of performance issue. I'm only speculation but stuff plays back fine in QT outside of Adobe.
I've never gotten anything thing one way or the other from Adobe about it (no surprise there). I get the same crap performance on my dual-core MacBook Pro as I do on my new 3+Ghz Octomac. And I won't even get started on how completely worthless HDV is. I haven't edited an HDV file for over two years, I just got too many damn MPEG stream errors and didn't want to deal with it.
I'm hoping a future update will allow me to use QT as the native media player instead of Adobe. So in the end, I convert all my source video (no matter where it came from or in what format) to Cineform and leave my headaches at the door.
