What the correct codec for Final Cut Pro?

Final Cut Pro works with a variety of industry standard codecs.
They are listed in the Easy Setup menu.
If you don't have the application yet, a list of supported codecs can be found [here|http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/specs/#finalcutpro].

  • "Unknown Error" all the time, every time on render of project, any codec

Trying to render a feature length documentary for a film festival (ie.. I don't have time for this). The project timeline runs 1 hour and 20 minutes. If I try and export or queue the timeline in media encoder to h.264, QuickTime or Select "Match Sequence Settings" as my output format, the media encoder fails to render with the very informative "UNKNOW ERROR" every time at random point in the render procedure. When rendering it as an mpeg once, I am able to see one place where it crashed. It is a place in the timeline where the are no transition, not cuts, no overlays, absolutely nothing out of the ordinary. Yet, it crashed there this time. Next time, it will crash elsewhere.
I am trying to render the timeline on segment at a time. So far, each smaller segment of 20 minute blocks seems to be rending just fine and goes past the points where other renders failed. Looks like Media Encoder can't handle large projects.
Here's all the requested information for a complete diagnosis of the problem.
Error given to me by Media Encoder : "Unknown Error" --that's it. The time rendered varies between 43 minutes and 3 hours.

I need this timeline rendered and I'm not interested becoming a forensic-level technical authority on Premiere to get it. This problem has come and gone now for months and is intolerable. I pay for software and I expect it to work, and at least give me something more useful than "UNKNOW ERROR." There is no such thing. As a former developer, I can say with authority that simply dumping to a message that says this is lazy and sloppy programming. Buffer underruns, stack overflows..whatever. Everything is caused by something. I can't begin to diagnose this problem unless Adobe provides software error handing that gives me some idea of what happens. Where did it happen in the timeline? What routine/subroutine gave the error? Was it a codec error? Come on....these things are not unknowable.
Adobe, PLEASE stop coming out with new features when you can't make your existing pay by the month software reliable! Maybe FCPX is worth another look.

    UPDATE:
tried rending the entire project as Quicktime ProRes 422 (since that is what clips were recorded in originally anyway) and Media Encoder gto 89% complete....and the entire application CRASHED. WHO-HOO! Way to go, Adobe!!!!!
Here's part of the crash report if it means anything. Maybe I'll try it again and see if anything changes! Can't get any worse.

  • Missing codecs for Blackmagic HD Extreme?

I just installed a new BM HD Extreme card. I installed the latest driver (6.3)
I am running QT 7.2 and FCP 6.0.1
When I launch FCP it prompts me to select a Sequence Preset.
The drop down window contains many Blackmagic options- but many others are missing. For example: I only have 3 choices of 1080i 59.94 (10bit, 10bit RGB, and 8bit). There are only 2 DVCproHD options. And there is no NTSC DV option, etc.
If I choose CANCEL I do not get a Timeline or Canvas window and they are grayed out the Window drop down menu. If I choose a preset- even one I do not want I get a complete layout.
Once inside FCP- I try Audio/Video Settings Menu.
All options including 1080i 59.94 ProRes, 1080i 59.94 DVCpro, NTSC DV, etc.
are available as Capture presets- but they are not listed under Sequence Preset menu.
If I select Easy Set-up- ALL BM presets are listed.
but when I try to edit to timeline I get a prompt telling to switch settings.
Many of these same setting options are missing from the VIEW Video Playback menu as well.
It's all very confusing. What is going on here?
    I suppose my question is:
How do I get All Blackmagic presets to appear as options in all settings- including sequence preset and Video playback?

time to call black magic support. I suspect (have not had time to check) the codecs are not in the proper location like in library>application support>final cut pro>??
look for the setups you see and where they are. I think there are separate locations for easy setup and for sequence presets. I have the same thing in the B room with an older blackmagic card

  • Error Message: This type of file is not supported, or the required codec is not installed?

I am trying to get media from my computer, and I only receive this error message :
This type of file is not supported, or the required codec is not installed?
What should I do? I have a window 8 laptop. My video files are from my itouch/ipod. I am using Premiere Elements 7.
I have used this software with success before. HELP would greatly be appreciated!

    darlingdarleen
Did both laptop 1 and 2 have QuickTime (latest version or any version) installed on the computers with Premiere Elements 7 when you got this "this type of file......" message?
If you go to the opened Premiere Elements 7 projects involved and look at Share/Personal Computer/QuickTime, do you find that QuickTime Presets are shown and that you find export settings choices under the Advanced Button/Video Tab and Audio Tab?
Look at the file name of the video. Do you see any irregularies in the name of the file, dots and such?
If you record new iPod footage, open a new Premiere Elements project, and import that iPod footage, do you still get the error message? Putting aside, iTouch, what model iPod are these videos coming from?
    Thanks.

  • What is error message "required codec is not installed"

I installed my Adobe Primier Software on my new computer and when I try to open projects from my old computer I get an error message "This file not supported or the required codec is not loaded"

I'll have to take a look at the project settings, but the sung I was trying to install with my pictures was purchased off itunes.
Now I have another problem with my DVD's I bought and All-In-One Hp computer. It is one of the best. I love it. Here is My problem with burning a dvd. I go though the process on Adobe Premier Elements and everything seems to go fine. The burned DVD plays fine on the computer, but doesn't play on my home DVD player. The home DVD player is a current model from Toshiba and the latest technology. When I put the DVD in the Toshiba player it just keeps trying to load with no success. I did not record in Blue Ray, just used standard format.  I tried it several times with the same results. Any ideas?
    Thanks,

  • Can't make a workable custom codec with ProRes 422 (HQ)

I've only just now found that there is a Support Community for Compressor.  Wish I'd known sooner.
I see my version of Compressor is 3.5.3.
I've been on a little saga.
I started out with the challenge of converting some MP4 files from a Blackberry Playbook into ProRes 422 (HQ) for editing in Final Cut. I used Compressor and the task looked fairly straight forward. I used the ProRes setting in the Compressor, converted my files and imported them into Final Cut. Video was fine but I soon found out that the audio needed rendering every time I put a clip into the Timeline. I went on-line to various chat rooms with this problem. Pretty soon a fellow was telling me that the ProRes 422 (HQ) setting in Compressor had "Audio Pass-through" as default and that this was the cause of my problem. Change it, he said, to "Linear PCM".
It took me a fair while to figure out that the ProRes setting in Compressor did not allow itself to be modified and that I'd have to create a custom preset if I was to make these changes. I set about to do that. I was able to select "QuickTime Movie" and then in "Video/Settings" choose "ProRes 422 (HQ)", in "Audio", "Linear PCM". This did solve the audio problem. Now files imported into Final Cut did not need rendering. But another problem became evident.
Whereas the ProRes 422 setting that came with Compressor in its summary page listed: "Width" and "Height" as "(100% of source)", the custom ProRes 422 (HQ) setting I'd just created has "Width" and "Height" as "320" and "240". In short the 19:9 aspect ratio of the original footage was lost. What I got both in the conversion and in Final Cut was a squished SD image.
I've played like heck with Compressor trying to see if there was some place I could get this custom version of ProRes to correspond to the aspect ratio seen in the Audio Pass-through version that came loaded in Compressor. No luck. All very mysterious.
My next step was to look to create another custom codec that would have the proper 1280 X 720 ratio. Turns out  "HDV 720p 30fps" does, so now I've been converting to that. Looks fine in Final Cut - proper picture and sound.
I've been playing around a bit more and see now that I can create a custom setting using "Apple Intermediate Codec". I've tried it and it works too.
So after all this, my question: Should I be using that codec instead? Or does it really matter what codec I use for editing? Is the only real issue what codec I decide to use to output?
And while I'm at it: Does anybody have ideas why trying to create a custom setting with ProRes 422 (HQ) does not work - for my purposes at least.
I must admit this converting codecs is pretty new to me. Hopefully with time this experience will get easier and clearer.
    John

Setting a Compressor ProRes Custom Setting:
    1) Pick Apple ProRes 422...
    2) Drag the PreRes 422 setting to the Bach Window. You can only make a custom setting from the Batch Window...
    3) Select enable for the audio. Click on setting to make sure it is set right. Uncheck Allow Job Segmenting... Make sure Streaming is set to none*....
    4) Select the Geomenty tab... Pick Custom (16:9):
    5) Click Save As and name your custom setting...
    6) You new custom setting will show up in the Custum folder for later use:
Another thing you can do is make Droplet of this custom setting. Menu... File... Create Droplet... Save the Droplet into a folder somewhere on your computer.
A Droplet will start the transcoding automatically. Drag the Droplet onto a video icon and let it do it's job.
    * ProRes doesn't need the Fast Start setting. If this is set it will take almost twice as long to do the encoding. Same with Allow Job Segmenting using Qmaster.
I did the above on the fly and hope everything is clear for you to understand.

  • G5 10.5.8 Combo Update codec overrun - install fails

    Hi,
I still have my first mac, a Power Mac G5, but it has been acting as a center speaker stand for some time now. A couple of years ago it started playing up, I spent hours and pounds trying to fix it, gave up and bought a shiny new iMac. So with the festive season upon us and orders to tidy up, I thought I'd have one last try at fixing it before turning it into a drinks cabinet.
As I recall, it all started to go wrong one day when I tried to download a large update to something. When I tried to install the update I got a Codec Overrun error and/or a Corrupt File message. As it stands today the machine is running a clean install of OSX 10.5.6 and I am failing to install the MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.8.dmg upgrade. I currently have 2 copies of the update.
One copy on the desktop  was downloaded directly from the Apple support site. The .dmg opens and verifies OK and I can launch the MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.8.pkg. This runs through the installation sequence, past the password but finally comes up with an error message "Install Failed. The installer could not validate the contents of the 'MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.8' package. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."
Another copy in my downloads folder, put there by the Software Updater, doesn't get that far. It comes up with "Warning,The following disk image failed to mount. Image - MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.8.dmg, Reason - codec overrun."
    So far I have tried:-
Memory - run third party memory checker application (can't remember which one) and found no faults.Tried different set of memory cards
Hard disk - run all the disk check and repair utilities, re-formatted, repartitioned. Tried a different hard disk.
OSX 10.5.6 - reinstalled from original disks several times.
MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.8 - downloaded via Software Updater process and direct from Apple Support website. Downloaded via wi-fi, ethernet, different Mac, different PC. Always get the exact same file size.
    Resetting the PRAM etc
    New standby battery
    Installing in Safe Mode
    Swearing.
None of this has worked. I get some different error messages but they are all variations of "codec overrun", "corrupt file" or "Install failure"
Anyone got any other ideas? Or should I just get on with the drinks cabinet conversion?
    Thanks

That message isn't a space available message. If you bring up Disk Utility, how does it say the partition is formatted, ie, partition format, write status, and partition map scheme? Assume SMART status is verified, yes?

  • Why is it that when I try to open a project, it says "the project contained a sequence that could not be opened. No sequence preview preset file or codec could be associated with this sequence type"?

It could be opened last night but today it just kept showing "the project contained a sequence that could not be opened. No sequence preview preset file or codec could be associated with this sequence type". I really need to access my video.
    Some help out there, please?

  • Is there a way to access more of my codecs to render with in AE 4.1 ?

    Hi all,
I'm a new user using an old version of AE 4.1 on Windows 7.
Is there a way to access more of my available codecs to render with in AE 4.1 ?
When I go to export as an AVI file in AE 4.1 I only have the CINEPAK, DV-PAL, DV/DVCPRO-NTSC and DVCPRO-PAL codecs available as choices, and then NONE for uncompressed output.
Yet when I render to AVI in Adobe Premiere I have the CAMSTUDIO LOSSLESS, CINEPAK, HUFFYUV, INTEL IYUV, LAGARITH LOSSLESS, MICROSOFT RLE, MICROSOFT VIDEO 1, MSU SCREEN CAPTURE LOSSLESS, x264VFW-H.264/MPEG-4 AVC and the XVID MPEG-4 codecs all available to render with.  I usually use the XVID MPEG-4 codec to render with for best quality for file size, or the LAGARITH LOSSLESS codec to render with if I need to plug a file back in to Premiere since Premiere has limited AVI file codec import capabilities.
Why aren't the rest of my codecs available to render with in AE 4.1 ?
The problems are (as seen in the screenshots below)...
    1) The CINEPAK codec renders the correct file format size and aspect-ratio that my project is (1280x720) but outputs an AVI file that can not be imported in to Premiere and can not be converted by two different converters.
    2) The NONE-UNCOMPRESSED option renders the correct size format file but outputs an AVI file so large (over 6 gigs) that it can not be use practically in Premiere and it will not even play in a video player.
    3) The DV-PAL, DV/DVCPRO-NTSC and DVCPRO-PAL codecs render in incorrect aspect ratio and format sizes (770x576) regardless of which aspect ratio is selected (as seen at the bottom of the screenshot below), resizing my project size and they will not import in to Premiere... these can be converted to an H.264 AVI file in one of my converters  that Premeire will then import, but they are still the wrong size and they loose sharpness if they are resized (stretched) during conversion.
Please see the screenshots below for clarification.
    Thanks for any input,
    digi

Wow, thanks again Andrew.  That works.
All my codecs showing up via Composition/Make Movie.  Its weird, when I tried using the H.264 codec (Premiere likes H.264 and Lagarith Lossless), the H.264 rendered a strange 800 and something by 720 size instead of the selected and displayed 1280x720 format that the project is in and speced in the Render interface.
But when I used the Lagarith Lossless codec, I get the right size and everything looks good at 1280x720.
Before you wrote back, I was able to convert one of the 770x576 size DV-PAL files to H.264 via the Freemake converter, and then that imported in to my Premiere file... but that is a moot point now that I can get the correct size file with the Lagarith codec.
I would have been able to use the converted 770x576 (properties says 720x576, but it measures out at 770x576) DV-PAL files for this project with the digital clock and get it to import in to Premiere correctly... since I could just place the clock face when blackscreened in my 1280x720 Premiere project, but now I can use the full size Lagarith rendered file for this and other projects from AE that require the full frame of composition.
Thanks so much... your the most efficient forum guy I've ever had answer a question... no restating or misunderstanding... just pure useful answers.
    Thanks a trillion,
    digi

  • HT3775 What codec do I need to play video that is called .avi.  It will not play on my new Macbook Pro.

What codec do I need to add to play a video that is called .avi
It will not play on my new Macbook Pro since I put it into the movies section of my launchpad.  When it was on the desktop It worked fine.  I moved it back to the desktop and it still does not work.
The error message says  The document "   .avi" could not be opened.
A required codec is not available.

Download VLC Media Player which plays anything you throw at it and  Perian (AVI and FLV support).

  • MPEG2 codec not working in Final Cut Pro on Mac OSX Tiger

We have been using the File-export-Quicktime Conversion-MPEG2 codec for exporting of files from Final Cut Pro to DVD Studio Pro. On the new mac system that was just bought, the option does not show up.
Currently the system is running Quicktime Pro 7.1.2/ FCP 5 and DVD Studio Pro 4 and it is a new mac system running Mac OSX Tiger.
This problem has happened before on a mac running on an older system, but that was solved by reinstalling FCP and then DVD Studio pro and making sure that the QT Pro was of the latest version.
Right now, we have reinstalled everything the same way, tried installing DVD Studio Pro after, we have also done a full software update of the software over the net.
The codec is still not working, all the macs in the office are supposed to be upgraded to Mac osx tiger, but right now we can't do so, cos then we wouldn't be able to burn any DVDs.
    Please help, thanks.

The installation of QT 7 is the culprit behind the missing MPEG-2 Export Component. But during upgrades, it doesn't always get rid of the file ... probably what happened on your older system when you upgraded to QT 7 or Tiger. Either the new system came with QT 7 preinstalled, therefore not including the Export Component, or if it was upgraded, the upgrade missed it.

  • Is there a solution for surviving the millions of different codecs?

    Hi
Once again, I find I can't use a video file which has been passed to me. It won't open in Quicktime, FCE or iMovie. It was encoded as an mpeg in Premiere Elements, although I'm aware that this doesn't really mean much. I can open it in VLC - the codec is 'mpgv' and the audio 'a52'. I tried downloading a a52 component, but no luck.
Why are there simply so many incompatible ways of encoding video files? Is there some kind of 'toolkit' app which will have a go at converting video files?
Or is it just a matter of specifying exactly how a file should be encoded before it is sent to you? If so, how can I find out what FCE needs?
    Thanks
    Ben

Or is it just a matter of specifying exactly how a file should be encoded before it is sent to you? If so, how can I find out what FCE needs?
    FCE works at fixed resolutions.
Open the Easy Setup you are using and the info is there.
The files need to conform to either NTSC or PAL DV specs.
Audio should be aiff files of either 32 or 48kHz. The reason you would choose 48 or 32 is mainly decided by the camera that shot the footage. If you shot with 12 bit audio then that's the equivalent of 32kHz for FCE.
    16 bit = 48kHz.

  • How do I set up stereo audio tracks as default in Premiere using the ProRes 422 codec?

Forgive me if this has been asked many times before. I have searched but can't find anything that explains it in language that doesn't require an advanced degree in computer engineering.
I am a recent convert for our beloved FCP 7. I am learning to love Premiere dearly - but the audio part of it drives me nuts.
I have exported from FCP a series of files as ProRes 422 movies with stereo audio tracks. I want to bring them into Premiere in the same way. But when I do it squashed everything into a single audio file.
This plays havoc with the panning - especially in mixes that have stereo music mixes. Apart from that it just confuses me.
Also. when I create a new project from scratch in Premiere and I select the custom ProRes 422 setting it only allows ProRes 422 mono audio. I don't see a codec for anything else (ie. stereo).
    Am I missing something?
I have looked in all the preferences areas and can't find anywhere to change this. I just want to be able to import simple, basic two track audio (and have it show up the same)  as I would in FCP, ProTools and the myriad other editing programs I use.
I also want to be able to set up a basic two track stereo timeline/sequence without having to reinvent the wheel.
Many thanks for any help and your patience. I am slowly tearing my hair out and spending long periods sitting in the corner hugging my knees and weeping.
My specs. Preferred editing codec: ProRes 422
    Premiere pro version CS6 (6.05)
    Thanks again.

Go to the Project Panel, select all clips and rightclick/modify/audio channels.
Set it to 2 tack and mono.
When you drop the clip onto the timeline the stereo will come in on two tracks.
You can also set this to default in the Preferences under Audio (before importing the clips) (Stereo set to mono).

  • HT3775 I have a bunch of .MOD files I cannot play from our Canon video cam. I tried renaming the files as MPEG or MOV, I get the message "The document "001.MPEG" could not be opened. A required codec isn't available." Any advice on getting these to play?

Try installing Perian or VLC. Some AVIs require a codec which simply isn't available for Mac OS X.

  • HELP VIDEOS NOT WORKING: CODEC MISSING

Okay up till today afternoon my Mac was working just fine, Safari worked and so did everything else. I installed a new Apple Security Update which broke Safari, I reinstalled Mac OS X Panther (10.3) from scratch, immediately re-updated to 10.3.9 and installed QuickTime 7 then installed Divx 6 and try to play some of my videos in QT that worked before (I was running QT 7 this morning before OS reinstall) and now videos are not working, there is no picture or sound.
I have ran Disk Utility before and after major installations to prevent system errors. Tried reinstalling QuickTime 6.5.2 but that only seems to work when running QT 7.0.0 (version 7.0.4) got installed.
Tried deleting 7.0.4. and installing 7.0 says it cannot install QuickTime because a newer version is already on computer although I deleted it completely. Have tried installing 3ivx for QuickTime, reinstalling Divx 5.2.1, Divx 6 in different orders and still no luck.
Any ideas what can I do? Anyone have a download for Divx 5.2.1? I can always reinstall QT 6.4 (even if I have to do another OS reinstall) then install Divx 5.2.1 and then upgrading to QT 7 after installing Divx and 3ivx.
Most of my videos are in AVI - need Divx or any good video codec to play.
    Thanks

Thanks - I had to reinstall Mac OS X just to get QuickTime back. After I installed it I downloaded and reinstalled Divx 5.2.1 component for QuickTime then ran one of my videos just for a sec (have them saved to CD) and it worked.
Earlier I only had Divx 6 component for QT installed (when I mentioned reinstalling QT 7 and then installing Divx (before latest OS reinstall) and Divx 6 did not help any I didn't even have sound. I installed Divx 5.2.1 now and got my sound and video back.
Now I just have to recopy all my media back to my hard drive -- all the videos and music and pictures (to QuickTime, iTunes, and iPhoto). Have bookmarked the url u gave me and will refer to it in future if I need it again.

  • Unable to export Quicktime after upgrade from Premiere 7.0 to 8.0 (2014) error "incompatible video codec in preset"

In the previous version of Premiere Pro (downloaded two months ago) I was able to export QuickTime files with preset HD 720p H.264.  It was very easy to do this in the previous version.
Upgraded to Premiere Pro 8.0 (2014), no when I attempt to export the same project with the same settings I see error message "incompatible video codec found in the preset. present load failed"
When I select Quicktime, the default preset appears as NTSC DV Widescreen 24p.   Attempted to export with this setting, result is a file that plays audio but no video.
System is Windows, tried two different computers, including one with Windows 8, same result. Tried Media Encoder, same result.
I searched the forums for an answer, the new features page lists these presets as available however they are not working for me.  Nothing else was changed on the computer, only the upgrade to Premiere 8.0 (2014)
How can I export Quicktime files in the new Premiere Pro?

Tech support helped me solve the issue - uninstall QuickTime and reinstall the newer version of QuickTime
