Coding challenge suggestion

I received my introduction to Labview last summer with the Tic Tac Toe coding challenge and had a great time doing it!  I'm a bit suprised another one hasn't been run since then.  In keeping with the principle of Tic Tac Toe I have a few ideas for a coding challenge:
(These all are based around game theory concepts because that is what I find fun and interesting.)
In all of these games the winner of the match is the program that scores more points.  I propose the overall challenge winner is decided by W-L record from the matches rather than a sum of points from all matches.  I also think each match should be run with some known N number of games.  Having a known end point introduces some interesting decisions.
Prisoner's Dilemma - Straight 1v1 heads up play
(Possible point values: A&B stay silent - 3, 3;  A defects & B stays silent - 5, 0;  A&B defect - 1, 1)
Since always choosing Defect guarantees against a loss, maybe there should be some minimum score that must be achieved in order to qualify for a win.  For example, given a match of 100 games, if A Defects every game while B employs the common Tit for Tat strategy, at the end of the game A will win with 104 points agaunst B's 99 points.  If both of them remain silent for the entire game each will score 300 points.  Maybe the qualification score should be 200 or so.
Diner's Dilemma - A multiplayer version of Prisoner's Dilemma
Multi Choice Prisoner's Dilemma - A PD variant that allows each player more than one choice
"Consider the following two-player game: both players simultaneously choose a whole number from 0 to 3. Both players then win the smaller of the two numbers in points. In addition, if one player chooses a larger number than the other, then s/he has to give up two points to the other." Copied from Wikipedia
For example, if A choses 3 and B chooses 2, each player receives the small of the two numbers or 2 in this case.  Furthermore, A forfeits 2 of his points to B because he chose the higher number.  Final outcome for this game is A=0, B=4.
Thoughts?  Critiques?

I think Bruce Ammons coordinated the last one, but as to whoever was responsible for the challenges within NI, I don't know.
A new challenge!  Who's responsible for the Challenge?

    Here is the new coding challenge!!!  You need to create a vi that will play the game of tic tac toe.  It will be played on a 4x4 grid, and the objective is to LOSE the game, not win.  The complete rules are found on the LabVIEW Zone.
    The attached template has the required inputs and outputs for testing.  If you don't use this template, I will not be able to test your submission.
    I will answer any questions about the challenge on this forum.  Please post your questions here and don't email them to me.
    Once there are a few submissions, I will start posting the current standings and update them frequently.
    Can you be the biggest loser?

  • Typical XI Integration Challenge - suggestions needed

    Hello Forum,
    I am a very enthusiastic SDN user and have been following the community since a long while now. I have the following challenge at one of our clients and need expert advices, remarks and suggestions based on your knowledge and experience. I have addressed this post also to the Industry Speak as I think this might also be useful to other SAP Partners which are involved in various XI implementations.
    We have a typical SAP Integration Project where XI was finalised as "The Integration Solution". We have over 160 Interfaces which are mostly IDOC to File (vice versa) scenarios involving a range of legacy systems. In addition to that we have a number of as-is SAP-SAP scenarios which are realised over BAPI's as of date, which we plan to get realised over XI using RFC Adapters and possibly with Proxies when ever required. Our aim now is to consolidate the number of interfaces where ever possible to avoid the huge number of point-point interfaces. We would really appreciate your valued suggestions/experiences on this.
    1. Advantages / Disadvantages of using the IDOC Adapters with in XI instead of the ALE interfaces.
    2. What are the possiblities of consolidating the different File Interfaces to talk to one IDOC interface hence reducing the number of point-point interfaces. To put more precisely, multiple senders one or more recievers.
    3. I have come to read a lot about IDOC Packaging, how can this be use in a situation as briefed above.
    4. Would it be said feasible to get the BAPI Integration Scenarios, running over the Proxy runtime and calling the BAPI's inernally ?
    These are the few topics that we would like to discuss with the forum. Due to restriction we are posting this under a strange but in true meaning of the name "XI interest" :-).
    Thanking in anticipation,
    XI Interest.

    Hi XI Interest !!!
    <i>>>1. Advantages / Disadvantages of using the IDOC Adapters with in XI instead of the ALE interfaces.</i>
    Go thru this thread:
    Re: Why is it better to use Proxies and not adapters

    Just some configuration in ID (Receiver Determination, Interface Determination).

  • Coding challenge - Unique constraint between column in 2 different tables

    Hi I have 3 tables like
    project--> pk: projectid
    category --> pk: categoryid FK: projecid
    Buyer --> Pk: buyerid FK : Categoryid
    each project can have multiple categories, and each category can have multiple buyer. I need to ensure that a buyer can be adde to a project (uniqueness of projectid & Buyer id). I tried with triggers and its erroring out. Is there a easier way to enforce this?

    If one project can have multiple categories (P1 has C1 and C2) and one category can have multiple buyers (C1 has B1 and B2) then the project is automatically matched to two buyers (P1 has B1 and B2). This is against the rule project+buyer are unique.
    I think Selvaganapathy should explain the business logic with a practical example. my feeling is that the unuiqness is only on part of the buyer, not on part of the project. Like one Buyer can only be matched to one project, but one project can have several buyers. But this would allow totaly different solutions. Like adding the project ID to the Buyer table as a foreign key.

  • Color Coding in PHP/MySQL model: INC file

    Dreamweaver 8.02 on Vista RTM (wouldn't matter I don't
    think).
    I have a site I was using DWMX to manage previously and at
    that time I got into one of the XML or TXT files associated with DW
    and changed it so it would reckonize .INC as a valid file and
    therefore give me some color-coding, code suggestions as I am
    typing etc.
    On DW8 I see similiar XML/TXT files (for DW config) and now
    INC files are all over the place... so I am thinking it should
    reckonize this file types.
    Still though, the color coding (and the ability to use the
    menus to insert img's, etc) are greyed out.
    Any ideas?
    A typical inc
    <div>
    html
    html
    html
    </div>
    nothing hardcore.
    Any ideas? Macromedia/Adobe help online wasn't much help and
    my searching on the forums isnt bringing up anything.
    Thanks

    The .inc filename extension is popular, but it's also
    insecure unless
    the include files are stored outside the server root. Web
    servers have
    no idea of the correct MIME type for an .inc file, so they
    just serve
    them up as plain text if a direct request is sent to the
    server. This
    risks exposing sensitive information, such as database
    passwords.
    It's far safer to use the combination .inc.php. The server
    sees the .php
    filename extension and parses any code as PHP. The .inc
    reminds you that
    it's an include file.

    Thanks for the tip David.
    That might have been a solution from the begining but I was
    going off what I was reading in some PHP books and looking at
    samples, etc. I am running PHP5 on IIS6 and its been fine for a
    year, I just tried what you mentioned, to treverse directly to the
    includes (and I know where they are...) and IIS doesn't give them
    up. If you have a method to try let me know I would be interested
    in seeing... though honestly, in the case of the website at hand,
    minus one dynamic section what is in the INC is what people see by
    viewing source on thier browser and in case of the dynamic pages
    (google maps mashup) they can have it ;) if it helps them with
    thier site... let me know if there is a way to test that security.
    Thanks

    There were some excellent images this week and I was so impressed by them all ...
    Alex ... Well you excelled with this weeks animation ... good work on reconstructing all the background and nice work on moving the cage to the new backgrounds in No 2 & 3
    Alice ... Oh that did make me laugh. You have done well with putting Raffy in the cage ... very neat but he doesn't look too pleased
    Anne ... That really has made a super effect ... did you make a gradient and apply it to the cage selection? and I love the fuzzy effect in No 2 that is very different.
    Ben ... Very good effect .. how much of it is real and how much is photoshopped ?
    Bill ... Like the way you have gilded the cage and the open door is a real master stroke. Very well done ... cool background too :)
    Bob ... Very nice work on the cage in No 1 ... how did you do that ... it looks almost as though it is drawn. Certainly a good effect! and such a different image you have created in No 2 ... good use of the original image :) ... but No 3 has to be my favourite as it is such an original image and beautifully done !
    Brian ... Now that is different ... clever idea, it is topical and funny :)
    Butch ... Nice work on the underwater scene. Its a neat idea and you have done it really well! Nice touch with the bubbles ... how did you do those ?

    Dave .. Cool use of colour and clever idea with the newspapers. Its very well done and amusing.
    Donald ... Wow that is vibrant ... it looks amazing. Well done.
    Elissa ... I really like the way you have kept the perspective of the original image ... its well done and makes it into a striking image.
    Garry ... I have been looking at your entry for a while now and just can't work out how you have done it ... I can see motion blur in the background but how did you do the rest of it :)
    Jaye ... Nice strong vibrant colours and the silhouettes are a great touch. I like it very much :)
    Jodi ... Oh well your No 1 is beautiful ... the soft gentle colours are perfect for the image. I really like the open door and the footsteps leading away ... nice touch with the cross on the top :) No 2 is also good beautiful work on the seascape and those bubbles ... how did you do them ??
    Juergen ... Good work on the selection its very crisp ... and what a background you made for it ... very nice indeed.
    Karen ... Oh that is fun. I just love all the little touches ... the pigs, the wolf, the butterflies and that sky. Well done!!
    Kevin ... Your image has an almost surreal quality about it .. it is good but I keep expecting the water to come gushing out ... Neat idea :)
    Linda ... What a great pencil sketch .. how did you get that effect. It is so realistic .. nice page curl too.
    Malcolm ... Really good work on your selection and I like the way you have used the gradient behind ... it makes it look like light is shinning out through the cage ..
    Marilyn ... All of your images are really good this week. I really like the use of the multi coloured effects in No 1. No 2 is amazing .. that dark background throws the cage into the spotlight and I do like the contrast of the bird, the soft feathers and the leaves ... well done. Love the fantasy in No 3 .. it all works so well
    Marylou ... Nice textures you have introduced into your image and a good little touch with the foreground grass. How did you do No 2 ... it very effective and complex.
    Nancy ... Oh that is cute using cats in the windows :)The cage itself looks sort of sketched and I would love to know how you did it.
    PatB ... The budgies look as if they are watching the cat very closely indeed ... its really effective and tells it own little story !
    PatC ... What a good idea in No 1 ... it makes a really nice Christmas scene and nice work on that snow !! ... and good snowglobe in No 2.
    Pauline ... Nice work on on the insertion in No 1, good attention to detail ... it must have taken you a while to do that. No 2 has a great distortion of the reflection ... its really effective !
    Rita ... Oh I like the black & white look .. it has an almost japanese look. The trees pull your eye straight into the image ... I think that it is great !! ... and what a different feel you did in No 2 ... a much more soft and gentle look. Great gold on the cage ... how did you do that??
    Robin ... OK I give up ... how did you do that superb background ?? ... Wow it looks just so good!!
    Tab ... Clever theme and I love the way you have done it ...
    Terry ... Nice use of the image in No 1 ... it has a wonderful painted look and I would really like to know how you did it ?? The windows look as though they are really lit up ... it is so good!!. ... and No 2 is so funny ... as soon as I saw the cat's paw I started to laugh. Good idea and so nicely done !! Great flames in No 3 and a really interesting pattern in No 4
    Tom ... Nice work on your image. I especially like the gradient effect on the cage ... and so glad to find your trademark apple !!
    Tony ... A nice fun theme ... well thought out and really well done. It just looks as though he is standing inside that cage... well done!!
    Ward ... Well that a first ... a brick cage. Nice idea ... it looks good .. so how did you do it? I always look forward to your second image and this one did not disappoint me ... its a really good abstract use of the image with some great colour changes in there.

    Pat C ... Great treatment of the image in No 1 .. that background layer just looks like sparkling gold!! Neat edge effect and I do like the use of the lens flares .. they remind me of Christmas lights :) Wow No2 certainly has a great lit up feel to it ... how did you do that one?
    Pauline ... Very nice cards indeed ... and such cute snowmen. They are just so good !!
    Rita ... What a stylish card. It is good .. how did you get the painted effect?
    Robin ... Nice Christmas Tree in No 1 !! How did you make it ... it is really effective and makes a really good card. But No 2 is stunning ... how did you get that embossed background ... its just so good. I like the bells too ... and that layer style you have used on 2006 ... oh that is good.
    Tab .. Very original art work in your No 1 and neat animation in No 2
    Tawana ... Oh that is so effective, the dark background with the white lettering and snowflakes makes it look very good .. Good work on the reflections ... very realistic !
    Terry ... What an elegant card is No 1 ... good use of colour and very well done! ... and so too is No 2. it just looks wonderful ... great image and excellent text and effects. No 3 is stunning ... it makes a great pattern and is perfect for a Christmas Card.
    Tom ... A very poignant image ... Maybe one day we will acheive it :)

    Thanks for everyone for their great entries this week. This is one of the rides at the inside amusement park at the Circus Circus Casino in Lost Wages.
    ALEX: Nice use of the frog in your animations. Your #2 has a 60s light show effect to it.
    BARBARA: Love the color scheme throughout the series. I think #3 is my favorite of the series. How did you get such crisp folds?
    BEN: I love the contrast between the soft butterfly and the
    harsh symbolism of the chaotic world. Nicely done.
    BOB: I love the colors in your #1. Nice flashing lights in
    #2.I like the way you pulled the triangle patterns and colors
    from the columns into your #4.
    CLIFF: The essence of minimalism
    DAVE: Another good mixture of the frog and animation.
    MARILYN: Great cut-out on the parasol. Is this what they mean by "giving the cold shoulder?"
    MARY LOU: Loved the way you preserved the details in
    your toppers in #1. Nice chip stack with the CHAOS logo
    in #2.
    MIKE H: I get dizzy just looking at your #1. What filter did
    you use? Are frogs in a queue the same as ducks in a
    row?
    MIKE R: I missed the No Dangling sign the first time I
    looked at this. Nice blending of the hands with the track.
    RITA: I liked the way you incorporated the lines into the
    background. How did you create such a wonderful looking
    plant?
    ROBERT: Work good enough to hang in a museum...oh,
    wait, it is.
    ROBIN: How did you get such dramatic swirls? It looks like
    a floating top being sucked into a water vortex.
    TAB: Nice way to emphasize the frog--also liked the way
    the outside is now night. How hard was that to change?
    TERRY: Your #2 is my overall favorite this week. I love the
    texture and the colors. Is this a jump of pleasure or
    desperation?
    TOM: Two nice images. Love the theme of #1, but how did
    you get such a wonderful relief look for #2?
    TONY: My hat's off to you in #1. I love the butterfly and
    flowers in #2. Did you create the butterflies from scratch or
    are they somehow stretched and bent from the original?
    WENDY: I like the way your series gets progressively
    darker. How did you get such clean color changes with so
    many crossed lines in the background?

  • "Wish-list" to JavaFX

    <!--
    @page { margin: 2cm }
    P { margin-bottom: 0.21cm }
    H1 { margin-bottom: 0.21cm }
    H1.western { font-family: "Times New Roman", serif }
    H1.cjk { font-family: "Lucida Sans Unicode" }
    H1.ctl { font-family: "Tahoma" }
    -->Review/&rdquo;wish-list&rdquo; for JavaFX/NetBeans
    The following &ldquo;wish-list&rdquo; for JavaFX (1.1) and NetBeans (1.5), was made based on my experience doing three - smaller - projects in JavaFX. I plan to submit these projects (&ldquo;DestroyerFX&rdquo;, &ldquo;AceOfSpadeFX&rdquo; and &ldquo;SteamPunkWatch&rdquo;) to the &ldquo;JavaFX Coding Challenge&rdquo; (see &ldquo;http://www.javafx.com/challenge/&rdquo;):
    - a &rdquo;recreate&rdquo;-method for &ldquo;CustomNodes&rdquo; in style of the &rdquo;repaint&rdquo;-method of &rdquo;java.awt.Component&rdquo;. Should force the (re)call of &ldquo;create&rdquo;-
    method of a &ldquo;CustomNode&rdquo;-objects (normally &ldquo;create&rdquo; is only called once &ndash; the first time the &ldquo;CustomNode&rdquo; is drawn).
    Useful for &ldquo;CustomNodes&rdquo; changing their graphical expression over time, other than what may be expressed by using transformations.
    Solutions to the problem (using the existing system) could be:
    - reconstruct &ldquo;CustomNode&rdquo;'s for each iteration, or when they need to change their graphics. This would force a (re)call to the &ldquo;create&rdquo;-
    method
    - using a &ldquo;Group&rdquo; (or &ldquo;Sequence&rdquo;) to group different graphical representations/&rdquo;Nodes&rdquo;. The &ldquo;visible&rdquo;-attributes are manipulated to change
    between different representations
    - better support in NetBeans for export of projects as executable JAR-files. Useful for people wanting to distribute their application more in
    the style of traditional applications
    - default-values &ldquo;http://localhost:8082/servlet/...&rdquo; in generated *.jnlp files (by NetBeans) should be changed to relative-path &ldquo;file:.&rdquo;. This would
    make distribution of projects easier.
    I don't know if this already is possible in present system, by for instance setting up NetBeans
    - merge of Java and JavaFX (-script language). Basically features of JavaFX should be included in Java.
    For object-construction-syntax, I suggest some thing like:
    (new) MyClass(parm1,parm2, ...) {
    attr1: ...,
    attr2: ...,
    i.e. first the normal Java-constructor is called, hereafter attributes are assigned in JavaFX-style.
    JavaFX &ldquo;bindings&rdquo; could be a good alternative to &ldquo;Beans Bindings&rdquo; (JSR 295).
    I think both technologies (object-construction and bindings), would be a great addition to the Java-language, and could prove useful in other
    areas than just GUI's.
    The JavaFX API should further be accessible from Java
    - having a project of mixed Java- and JavaFX-files, I wasn't able to &ldquo;see&rdquo; JavaFX-files from Java-files in NetBeans. It would be nice to be able
    to do this, since I still consider Java as a better general-purpose language (for larger projects); and people might have older Java-code they
    may want to incorporate in their JavaFX-projects. I think, I recall some forums talk about this topic, but the solution isn't obvious anyway
    - problems playing sound-clips with the JavaFX &ldquo;MediaPlayer&rdquo; (multiple clips are played at the same time in my application). According to
    forums, this could be due to the sound-files being placed in JAR-files.
    In my projects I &ldquo;cheated&rdquo; by using the JavaSE-primtives for this (&ldquo;javax.sound.sampled&rdquo;). It would be nice if this could be fixed
    - in one of my applications (&ldquo;DestroyerFX&rdquo;), I wanted to use dynamic binding of the &ldquo;Scene&rdquo; of the central &ldquo;Stage&rdquo;-object, allowing the
    application to switch between a number of difference &ldquo;Scene&rdquo;'s according to functionality and context (&ldquo;introduction&rdquo;, &ldquo;level-up&rdquo;, actual game
    and &ldquo;final score&rdquo;). When running the application as a web-browser applet, this approach didn't seem to work (the application was stuck on
    first shown &ldquo;Scene&rdquo;). I recall some forums-posts discussing this.
    My solution to the problem was to reformulate the difference &ldquo;Scene&rdquo;-objects to &ldquo;Group&rdquo;-objects, swifting between the different
    &ldquo;Scene&rdquo;/&rdquo;Group&rdquo;'s by manipulating their &ldquo;visible&rdquo;-attribute.
    A performance problem was discovered in a &ldquo;Group&rdquo; having a &ldquo;content&rdquo; consistent of &ldquo;Sequences&rdquo; with dynamic changing content. I solved
    this by extracting the &ldquo;Sequences&rdquo; from the group, making them &ldquo;first-generation&rdquo; children of the &ldquo;Stage&rdquo;, i.e. going from:
    var grp1 : Group = Group {
    content: [ seq1, seq2, ...],
    var grp2 : Group = Group { ... };
    var actualGroup : Group = ...;
    Stage {
    scene: Scene {
    content: bind [ actualGroup],
    ... to:
    var grp1 : Group = Group {
    content: [ ...],
    var grp2 : Group = Group { ... };

    Darn Rich Text-editor:
    Review/”wish-list” for JavaFX/NetBeans
    The following “wish-list” for JavaFX (1.1) and NetBeans (1.5) was made
    based on my experience doing three - smaller - projects in JavaFX. I plan
    to submit these projects (“DestroyerFX”, “AceOfSpadeFX” and
    “SteamPunkWatch”) to the “JavaFX Coding Challenge”
    (see “http://www.javafx.com/challenge/”):
    - a ”recreate”-method for “CustomNodes” in style of the ”repaint”-method
    of ”java.awt.Component”. Should force the (re)call of “create”-method
    of a “CustomNode”-object (normally “create” is only called once – at
    the first time the “CustomNode” is drawn)
    Useful for “CustomNodes” changing their graphical expression over time,
    other than what may be expressed by using transformations.
    Solutions to the problem (using the existing system) could be:
    -- reconstruct “CustomNode”'s for each iteration, or when they need
    to change their graphics. This would force a (re)call to the “create”-method
    -- using a “Group” (or “Sequence”) to group different graphical representations/
    ”Nodes”. The “visible”-attributes are manipulated to change between
    different representations
    - better support in NetBeans for exporting of projects as executable
    JAR-files. Useful for people wanting to distribute their application
    more in the style of traditional applications
    - default-values “http://localhost:8082/servlet/...” in generated *.jnlp-
    files (by NetBeans) should be changed to relative-path “file:.”. This
    would make distribution of projects easier.
    I don't know if this already is possible in present system, by for
    instance setting up NetBeans
    - merge of Java and JavaFX (-script language). Basically features of
    JavaFX should be included in Java.
    For object-construction-syntax, I suggest some thing like:
    (new) MyClass(parm1,parm2, ...) {
                attr1: ...,
                attr2: ...,
            }i.e. first the normal Java-constructor is called, hereafter attributes
    are assigned in JavaFX-style.
    JavaFX “bindings” could be useful as an alternative to “Beans Bindings”
    (JSR 295).
    I think both technologies (object-construction and bindings) would be a
    great addition to the Java-language, and could prove useful in other
    areas than just GUI's.
    The JavaFX API should further be accessible from Java
    - having a project of mixed Java- and JavaFX-files, I wasn't able to
    “see” JavaFX-files from Java-files in NetBeans. It would be nice to be
    able to do this, since I still consider Java as a better general-purpose
    language (for larger projects); and people might have older Java-code
    they may want to incorporate in their JavaFX-projects. I think I
    recall some forums talk about this topic, but the solution isn't
    obvious anyway
    - problems playing sound-clips with the JavaFX “MediaPlayer” (multiple
    clips are played at the same time). According to forums, this could be
    due to the sound-files being placed in JAR-files.
    In my projects I “cheated” by using the JavaSE-primitives for this
    (“javax.sound.sampled”). It would be nice if this could be fixed
    - in one of my applications (“DestroyerFX”), I wanted to use dynamic
    binding of the “Scene” of the central “Stage”-object, allowing the
    application to switch between a number of difference “Scene”'s
    according to functionality and context (“introduction”, “level-up”,
    actual game and “final score”). When running the application as a
    web-browser applet, this approach didn't seem to work (the application
    was stuck on first shown “Scene”). I recall some forums-posts discussing
    this.
    My solution to the problem was to reformulate the different “Scene”-objects
    to “Group”-objects, swifting between the different “Scene”/”Group”'s by
    manipulating their “visible”-attribute.
    A performance problem was discovered in a “Group” having a “content”
    consistent of “Sequences” with dynamic changing content. I solved this
    by extracting the “Sequences” from the group, making them
    “first-generation” children of the “Stage”, i.e. going from:
    var grp1 : Group = Group {
                content: [ seq1, seq2, ...],
            var grp2 : Group = Group { ... };
            var actualGroup : Group = ...;
            Stage {
                scene: Scene {
                    content: bind [ actualGroup],
            }... to:
    var grp1 : Group = Group {
                content: [ ...],
            var grp2 : Group = Group { ... };
            var actualGroup : Group = ...;
            Stage {
                scene: Scene {
                    content: bind [ seq1, seq2, actualGroup],
            }With the critics giving, I owe people to say that my overall impression of
    the JavaFX-system (and NetBeans) has been very positive and satisfying. I
    hope for future development and deployment on diverse platform of the system.
