Cognos reporting on top of SAP BW

Hi,
Have anyone of you been involved in an implementation where COGNOS is used as the frontend reporting tool with SAP BW as the backend. If so, could you please pass on the setup/architecture document if you have any.
Also, can Cognos access BW infoproviders and generate reports or is it necessary to build BEx queries to interface with Cognos.
Thanks & Regards
Madhu

Hi,
By using Cognos we can access BW infoproviders and generate reports . It is easily possible because of interface provided SAP and Cognos.
But Still there are problem are there with this integration. For ex: You can not create queries directly on ODS , REstriction KF concept is not at all possible( this is very worst behavior).
With rgds,

Recently started working on a this Cognos & BW integration project. So We can share our experience mutually.

But when i uploaded that report on infoview portal, it shows blank page when i try to view it on portal. It works fine in Crystal Report 2008.
I have one other report without graphs, it works fine on infoview portal. This reports works fine with "Enterprise" authentication.

    - Crystal Report 2008
    - Business object Enterprise 3.0
    - Authentication: Enterprise
Please help as soon as possible.

    Hi..
Ya.. its strange!! Because when i have created a report without Chart.. it works fine on portal. But when i added a chart in same i get blank page.
And have you make that report on top of SAP R/3 (Or ECC).
Even when i have made report on top of SAP BI with chart.. it works fine on portal.
The issue is just with SAP R/3 (Or ECC).

  • Enterpise Reporting on top of SAP-Information Steward (V14.1.1)

We have several projects going on within SAP IS, some have been developed on specific data feeds (files) and some have been done on data Domain areas (i.e. Cusotmer), what we would like to do is create an enterpise level set of dashboards/scorecards at a different Data Domian level, higher than the ones used in the projects, aproximately 23 across the company, and even have them grouped into a set of 5-6 areas of business.
We know that there is nothing that exists within SAP-IS to let us do this out of the box, but i was wondering if anyone has done anything similar, say using BO capabilities and some join tables (perhaps - tables holding the mappings between data items within SAP-IS and the enterpise level data domains, and then the enterpise data domains to the business areas)
we do not want to have to load all of the data in to SAP-IS agina as a differnt project, we would like something to sit on top of existing projects, and something that will be extensable (except for maybe for adding data to the mapping tables) as we add new projects, e.g. not mean new coding within the solution.
Has anyone done this before?  does anyone have any idea of the scale of work involved in doing something like this?  Are there any white papers on this out there?
I am thinking something like this.  though please correct me if I am wrong...
the green boxes are SAp-IS tables, and the purple ones are join tables used by the BO dashboard.
    Thank you very much
    Will

    1) What is the differnence between BO edge and BO enterprise, I mean why BO edge is ideal for mid size company ?
BO Edge does not support clustering and it supports up to 100 user. It also aims and focus small and mid sized companies. Apart from that BO Edge and BO Enteprise offer the same functionality.
2)What are the components delivered with Standard/Premeium /profesional( Do we get Crystal report , Live office and Xcelsisus with Standard licence)
When you get BO Enterprise you get Live Office, Xcelsius, and I think Crystal Reports too.
3)Do we need to use to SAP Integerator KIT for connecting it to our SAP ECC , Even though we go for latest BO edge 3.1 SP 1 series?
    You need Integration Kit
4)As I am not using any SAP BI layer and data will be pulled directly from OLTP, How about Historical Analysis , will we be limited only to the data available in the OLTP?
For OLAP Data which you will be getting from your dataware house you need to install integration kit.
    5) Is Data integerator part of Edge series?
If you buy the whole package then it comes with it.
    6) For EDGE installation on Windows server should I go 32 bit or 64 bit , which one is preffered?
Both should work. Look at this thread...

7)I am Planning to have Window 32 , DB2 as the environment , Any constraints with this?
Nope... Look at above mentioned link...

  • Crystal Reports transport files for SAP APO / SCM

    Hi there,
Problem: we want to use Crystal Reports on top of SAP APO / SCM and have some difficulties getting the definitions of BW / OLAP servers right and don't know which transports to import on the SAP to report with Crystal.
System is a SAP SCM system with APO module. There is a cube in this module (because there is some internal BW system) and I can see the cube in Crystal Reports. When I want to report from this cube I get an error:
    "/CRYSTAL/MDX_GET_STREAM_INFO" not found.
This means some transport files were not imported and some functions are missing.
    The following transports are missing:
====quote from transports_EN.txt included in transports for Crystal Reports=====
The following files must be used on an SAP BW system:
    (These files are Unicode enabled.)
Content Administration transport (K900579.r21 and R900579.r21)
    Personalization transport (K900580.r21 and R900580.r21)
MDX Query Connectivity transport (K900581.r21 and R900581.r21)
ODS Connectivity transport (K900582.r21 and R900582.r21)
    ===========================================================
My SAP BASIS expert refuses to import these transports in SAP SCM, because he thinks it is not an SAP BW system as listed in the above transports_EN.txt file. Just trying is not an option because transports cannot be removed once imported...
In my opinion these transports have to be imported to clearly access the cube and will work on SAP SCM even if it's not a 'dedicated' SAP BW environment. In other words, these transports should be imported and will work on SAP OLAP servers like SAP BW, SAP SCM, SAP SRM (APO) or SAP SEM.
Does anyone of you have some more experience on reporting from SAP SCM / APO cubes and if I can import these transports without getting some nasty errors, because its not an SAP BW system?
    Kind regards!

Thanks for your reply, but this is not helping me much.
    Let me explain more.
In the transport_EN.txt file we see this:
If your SAP system is running on a 6.20 *BASIS system* or later, you must use the files listed below:
    (These files are Unicode enabled.)
    * Open SQL Connectivity transport (K900574.r21 and R900574.r21)
    * Info Set Connectivity transport (K900575.r21 and R900575.r21)
    * Row-level Security Definition transport (K900576.r21 and R900576.r21)
    * Cluster Definition transport (K900585.r21 and R900585.r21)
    * Authentication Helpers transport (K900578.r21 and R900578.r21)
The following files must be used on an *SAP BW system*:
    (These files are Unicode enabled.)
    * Content Administration transport (K900579.r21 and R900579.r21)
    * Personalization transport (K900580.r21 and R900580.r21)
    * MDX Query Connectivity transport (K900581.r21 and R900581.r21)
    * ODS Connectivity transport (K900582.r21 and R900582.r21)
So I have to import 5 transports in SAP BASIS system and 4 transports in SAP BW system to make full use of the integration kit.
SAP SCM / APO is basically a BASIS system, so the BASIS expert says only those 5 transport have to be installed.
But SAP SCM / APO is also having some reporting capabilities and stores data in OLAP cubes (Infocubes).
In Crystal I can see these cubes when using SAP BW MDX connection.
To make the error go away, I must have some function modules used in transport 'MDX Query Connectivity transport. But the BASIS expert doesn't want to import this transport, because it is listed as a transport for a SAP BW system and he says SAP SCM / APO is NOT a SAP BW system (it's a BASIS system).
And now I have to get some proof that this transport has to be imported in the SAP SCM / APO BASIS system before he installs it...

  • How to guide for connecting COGNOS / BO / Hyperion on top of SAP BI

    Hi friends
We need to explore the process of connecting Cognos / Hyperion or Business Objects on top of the SAP BI system.Could anyone help me with:
    1. Challanges faced in this kind of integration.
    2. The process of connecting these system
    3. Advantages / disadvantages of these systems' integration
    4. Comparision with these systems
I have visited vendor's sites but other than their marketing presentations, I could not find the required information.
    Thanks in Advance
    Darshan

    Hi,
There are lots of limitations integration of cognos to BI ,that includes latest version of cognos 8.2 portal,Difficulties regarding dashboards on to cognos for things like hierrachies etc..
Cognos is still DRAG and DROP ,Built your Bex query in BW ---> In Cognos , take ur KPI and Chars to use it in Cognos- rationale ,use BW authorizations.
Cognos can directly hit to BW infocubes and built their own query(no need of Bex query) however, the whole AUTHORIZATION concept has to be built now as a NEW (cannot use BW authorization concept-auth variables ....)
Two ways using cognos with BI
1)Built direct queries in cognos using BI infocubes
Disadvantage - Have to built Security/Auth concept in Cognos
2)Built queries in Bex and then present them in Cognos (using OLEDB from Bex)
Advantage - Can use the BW auth concept no need to built in cognos
As per my knowledge, Cubes in COGNOS are similar to cubes in BI 7.0 in terms of modelling, reporting etc. I was invloved in a project - Cognos reporting with BW cubes, and had enough hard time to work BEX queries in Cognos because of lot of limitations mentioned above.. I am not involved in data transfer from BI to COGNOS BI. I think, you need IBM Cognos Data Manager to integrate BI with cognos to extract Data, which will be installed on a seperate server and data manager connector to be imported in SAP via STMS. Then design and maintain relational data marts for use with Cognos 8 Business Intelligence, to move, merge, consolidate, and transform data from a range of data sources to build and maintain data marts

  • Xcelsius 2008 on top of SAP BPC

    Hi Experts,
I am trying to use Xcelsius 2008 on top of SAP BPC.
I want following functionality in my dashboard:
    1. There is a drop down in the dashboard for Year-Month selection.
    2. Based on that selection, the BPC query to be refreshed for the selected month and my dashboard will show data for the selected month. While integrating with WebI using LiveOffice, we used to do this by binding the prompt to a cell in excel and selecting on demand refresh option. Can we do the similar thing while integrating with BPC ?
    3. Can we create multiple BPC reports in the same excel file to build the excel model for my dashboard ?
Can these requirements be achieved by using Xcelsius on top of BPC using EPMConnector.xlx ?
    Many thanks,
    PASG

    Hi Sanjay,
You need to use different operation types of the EPM Connector for this.
Have a look at this how to guide:

  • Crystal report on top of a BW query

    Hi,
We are using BO XI3 with the SAP integration kit. We have built crystal reports on top of BW queries in Crystal Reports 2008 (installed with the SAP integration kit). Queries work fine when we launch them with the client of Crystal reports.
Problems arrive when we try to launch these crystal reports on the business object server. We can run reports without parameters, but we receive an error message for all the crystal reports that include parameters. The error message is "Servlet execution threw an exception".
If anyone has an idea to solve the issue...
    Thanks,
    Gabriel

    Hi,
The problem came from the installation setup that didn't work because the folders are defined the same way fro Tomcat 5 and Tomcat 5.5. In Tomcat 5.5, a folder missed and the installation was not complete.
    Thank you for your help,

  • Intalling BO front end tools on top of SAP BW (trial version).

    Hi All,
I currently work on SAP BI and SAP Enterprise Portal projects.  I am looking at installing BO Front end tools on top of SAP BW (just a trial version though).
Does anybody have the links where I can download this software?  Also I have played about with Excelsious which appears to be the new version of analyzer.  What is the new version of Web Application Designer (Pioneer??)  Is it possible to integrate web templates created with BO into the SAP Enterprise portal? Is there any guides which explains how to create simple dashboards with BO front end tools and integarte them into the portal?
I have a found some decent blogs already and am currently attempting to install BO onto my laptop.
    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks,

    Hello Nick,
yes you can implement BO Reports/Dashobard into the Enterprise Portal in some way. Its a bit tricky and here are some usefull guides you may have a look into.

  • Is there any table or report that available in SAP for any PR/STR

    HI All,
Is there any table or report that available in SAP for any PR/STR that are remain opened after S/O canceled.
    Please advice at the earliest.
    Thanks
    Chandru

    Chandru,
Of course.  The standard MD06 transaction will display ALL MRP generated exception messages, and will take you to the individual material to allow you to determine how you wish to respond to it.
So, MD06>enter the plant.  Optionally, enter the controller if you wish to limit the results by planner.
If you are interested in Sales order cancellations, then these exceptions would be categorized by SAP as belonging to the  "exceptions during Scheduling" or "exceptions during availability" groups.  On the Exceptions group tab, select these two items (6&7), deselect the rest. Enter.
You are now presented with a list of all materials that contain one or more of these exceptions.  From the menu bar at the top, select Edit>Find.  If you get a 'statistics' popup, click through.  Select the 'Find Exceptions' tab.
Message 26 "excess stock in individual segment" means that in a MTO environment, you have more supply than demand against given order/items (as you would have if a cust. cancelled his MTO order).  Select this message.
Message 20 "Cancel Process" means that you have a supply element that has NO requirements (as you would have if a cust. cancelled his MTS order).  Select this messaege.
Message 15 " Postpone process" means that you have supply elements that are scheduled to be received earlier that necessary (as you might have if a Cust cancelled his MTS order). Optionally select this message.
Clik the green check.  You will now notice that certain rows on the listing are highlighted.  These are the ones that contain your problem children.  Hit the "glasses selected MRP list" button.
This takes you to the first MD05 of the highlighted items.  Review the problem.  Decide what to do:  Cancel a supply element?  Push out a supply element? Leave it alone?  Call customer service to discuss which order was cancelled and why?  etc etc etc...
Once you are done with the first material, clik on the 'next material' icon or hit Ctrl-F2.  Repeat.  Continue till all materials have been evaluated and resolved.
This works for any other MRP message as well.
    Regards,
    DB49

  • Create new dimension on top of SAP BW data

    Hi expert,
I'm having a problem to create a new dimension on top on SAP BW data. I have a dimension details object called 'L01 G/L Account Key'. When I drag this object to the result object in the web intelligence, it display full data like '1000/30100'. How can I trim the data so it shows '30100'?.Is there any formula that support in universe?
I don't want to do the formula inside the web intelligence report because I want to use this dimension to other reports as well.
    Please expert....help me!
    Thanks & Regards,
    Syahida-

    Hi,
SAP BW MDX does not support calculations that return string or date: this is a limitation of SAP BW OLAP engine.
By the way I found exceptions that satisfy your requirement.
For instance you can manipulate a substring of a dimension only with NAME and UNIQUENAME attributes.
Example, you can use these expressions:
    <EXPRESSION>right([OD_COUNTRY].currentmember.name, 4)</EXPRESSION>
    <EXPRESSION>right([OD_COUNTRY].currentmember.uniquename, 4)</EXPRESSION>
    <EXPRESSION>left([OD_COUNTRY].currentmember.name, 4)</EXPRESSION>
    <EXPRESSION>left([OD_COUNTRY].currentmember.uniquename, 4)</EXPRESSION>
    <EXPRESSION>mid([OD_COUNTRY].currentmember.uniquename, 2,4)</EXPRESSION>

  • SAP Business Objects Explorer on top of SAP BW

    Dear Experts,
    My Requirement:
    -  Use BO Explorer on top of SAP BW ( no HANA, no BIA ). This is to provide the users a set of related data and they can analyse the way they want.
    Question-1:
    - What should be the BW data volume that I should keep in mind for BO Explorer to have good performance. My concern is primarily because we don't use BIA or HANA.
    Question-2:
    - Can BO Explorer directly connect to a BW Infocube/Multiprovider or it has to connect only through Universes
    Regards.

    Hi,
I will suggest you Go for SAP Business Objects Analysis, edition for Microsoft Office, ity can connect bex query directly & Bw/Infocubes also.
Regarding Performance we can do In BI Itself depends on Business needs,: modelling , extraction, reporting 3 levels in BI .
