Cold boot failure
To avoid frequent freezing of my system when I open up IE connected to my work through VPN, I formatted my C drive and did a clean install of XP Pro. Everything looked fine. However, if I power on the machine after some break, after POST it says "boot failure from previous device". If I restart it by hitting the RESET button, everything looks fine. I am seeing this problem since yesterday. I have the same set of hardware without any problem for a while.
My system spec:
MB: MSI 875Neo-Fis2r
CPU: Northwood 2.4Ghz FSB 800Mhz
RAM: 2x512MB DDR-400 OCZ running in Turbo mode (No overclocking as stability is more impotant for me)
HD: SATA Seagate Baracuda 160GB (XP is installed in this drive, 5 partitions in this disk), IDE IBM 100GB (4 partitions, all for data storage)
Video card: (MSI brand) Nvidia Geforce Ti4600
Sound: Santa Cruz Turtle Bach
Peripherals: Hauppauge WinTV PCI
USB: IBM PC Camera, Canon Scan Gear scanner, USB 2800 Video (conected to USB2.0 port for video capture/convert), MSI 8x DVD+-RW, MSI 48x16x48x CDRW (I seem to be a MSI fan!)
PSU: Codegen 400W
OS: XP Pro with SP1 and all the latest updates

Could be MEM problem?
PSU more spex needed?
Hard drive has bad sectors?
Could also be cross linked multi OS files, if each BOOT OS partition not "hidden" from other.......you would have scandisk running alot

2006 Mac Pro Cold Boot Failure
Hi all,
I have problems with 2006 Mac Pro. It fails cold boot at 100%, first thing in the morning only. So I'm seeking expert advice.
The spec is,
Xeon 5355 2.66GHz x2 (Octo cores)
ATI Radeon 5770(Apple Genuine)
8GB Memory(4x1GB kingston, 4x1GB OWC)
500GBx2 1TBx2 HDDs
I disassembled and cleaned PSU and Fans, reapplying thermal pastes on CPUs and North Bridge a month ago.
Then I booted, system froze at desktop, so I shut it down, reset PRAM & SMC. it booted normally but the upper riser card wasn't detected at all. I cleaned the slot contact and reseated DIMM modules. It was detected after that.
Everything worked fine for a few days but then I got random kernel panics, reseated RAM, reinstalled Snow Leopard but still got random kernel panics. Then ran AHT for a couple of hours and got an error code 4MEM/6....
I contacted OWC and they sent me a new set of memory modules. While waiting for the replacement, no kernel panics at all but DVD drive died as well as IDE cable, so I replaced both.
I got the replacement RAM but past a week, MP fails cold boot every morning. Below is what's happening...
(1) With Kingston Memory, CPU B error LED is lit, I press SYS_RST, one of DIMM LED is then lit (always DIMM A1). Or sometimes, Power-LED is blinking.
(2) With OWC memory, boots normally, then kernel panic within a few minutes.
(3) With OWC memory, CPU B error LED is lit, I press SYS_RST, one of DIMM LED is then lit (always DIMM B1)
*(1) with new and old riser cards
*(3) after replaced 2 riser cards
Replacing riser cards didn't help. After these happen, I shut down by pressing power button for seconds and it boots normally without a hitch. Never get kernel panics nor system freeze. It means when it warms up, MP just works just like it should.
Replaced so far,
-- IDE cable (Apple Genuine)
-- DVD drive (Optiarc AD-7200A)
-- 4GB (1GBx4) OWC memory
-- RTC battery CR2032
-- 2 riser cards
Is the logic board dead or PSU or memory modules are still bad?

corrupt caches, corrupt file system, corrupt directory.
Safe Boot is not effective in such cases, fsck from single user mode has a better chance.
Booting from another hard drive, install your bought copy of Alsoft Disk Warrior to rebuild the directory (it has deep scavenge files also).
The longer you continue to do just Safe Boot and continue using it, the more trouble and less likelihood of being able to repair the drive.
SMART is not smart enough, it tells you about the past, not what could likely happen, or if you have had bad sectors and I/O errors.
Have bootable backup clones and a drive that is a clean Apple OS and drivers that isn't used except for repairs and maintenance. Don't rely on just Apple Disk Repair. -
Mac Pro cold boot failure rate at 50%
I have a Mac Pro dual 2.8 ghz quad core, circa 2008. Recently, I have been required to depress the power button to end a failed cold boot, then press again to boot, usually with success.
I do hear a chime, but in the failed situation, it never progresses to the login screen.
I've reset the pram a few times, this doesn't seem to fix anything, as the system always boots if you try enough times (knock on wood).
I've verified the s.m.a.r.t. status and the disk, it all reports back as fine.
I am writing this post from a "safe boot" hope to see if that works on the next cold boot.
Other posts on this forum suggest it may be a weak pram battery so I will try that, the computer is getting on in years. However a similar post on this forum was marked as answered because the problem reported stated it did not chime from the external speakers. I don't care about that! Windows 7 Ultimate x64 BOOT Failure on HP ProBook 450 G1...

I bought a new laptop HP ProBook 450 G1 (i5 4200M, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, 2GB ATI Graphics card). The laptop comes with DOS free operating system.

After updating all drivers and having a clean device manager with no hardware left as unknown, i figured out that the laptop fails to make a cold BOOT.
After several trials, and installations. the problem remained the same. I changed the installation to Windows 8.1 Pro and the problem remained the same.
On cold booting, the laptop after showing HP logo in start-up starts to show Windows Logo animation but in Super Slow Motion for about 6-8 minutes, then followed by strange sounds which force me to shut it down by pressing power button for long until it shuts down.
After huge number of trail and error, i found out that if I entered BIOS Setup (by pressing esc then F10) and then exiting it without doing any changes or even without saving, the Laptop boots Windows 7 very smoothly (in about 15-18 seconds) and works fine. it also can make endless number of smooth restarts without any problem.
If it is shut down then turned on, the boot failure is the outcome.
The only way to make a successful cold BOOT (i.e after a shut down) is to enter BIOS setup mode (by pressing esc then F10), then exiting it within seconds without changing anything or saving, then it boots smoothly.
I tried MBR fixes through command prompt in Recovery Mode, I tried to change booting to make it boot as LEGACY or UEFI Hybrid. The BIOS is updated to the latest frimware on HP website verion 1.2 dated 15 July 2014.
NO HELP.....All lead to the same disappointing result.

KT4V not seeing HD on cold boot
Guys,
About a 2 months ago I built my first PC, an Athlon XP 2400, 512MB, WD 80GB-8Mb cache HD, DVD-ROM, with a MSI KT4V mobo.
I was finally able to do a new install of XP Pro with the Xmas break and now I have a weird problem...When I do a cold boot it says looking for boot record from floppy, then looking for boot record from CDROM, then finally boot failure.
I've gone into setup and have it set as my HD as the 1st boot device, floppy as 2nd, and DVD as 3rd. When I come out of setup it boots up fine and I can do a warm boot with no problems; until I do a cold boot. Then I get a boot failure again.
I've changed settings so I only have the HD as the boot device and no difference.
I've flashed my BIOS to 1.9 and it took fine but no difference.
Any ideas for me to try?

I can't even see boot up specs (amount of RAM, BIOS version, etc) anymore because it boots so fast now, I may have to disable quick-boot now.
I guess I was able to see the boot up specs because it was looking for the master? Can anyone explain this, I'd really like to understand because I've never heard of this before. Is this just a MSI mobo anamoly or in general?

MSI K8T-NEO won't post from a cold boot
Alrighty here is my strange problem. I have my system connected to a surge protector powerstip. When I power my machine down I also shut off the powerstrip which cuts wall power off from the machine. When I turn the power back on the and then fire up the computer every single time it will not POST on the first try. The drive lights cd-roms come on but the HD's never start. So I hold the power button in for 6 seconds, then hit it a second time, and it boots every time. Shutting down and restarting is no problem, so long as the power is never disconnected from the system.
Here is my configuration
MSI K8T NEO Bios version 1.2
Athlon 64 3200+ not overclocked
1 512meg stick of Geil Ultra PC3200 slot 1
1 512meg stick of Coarsair XMS3200 slot 2
memory is running at 333mhz 2-3-3-7 all setting are set to auto

Promise 100 TX4 Raid controller
2 WD 80 gig SE HD's connected to promise controller
1 Pioneer PD-115 16X DVD drive
1 Liteon 411-s I believe 4x DVD Writer

According to core center +3.3 is at 3.31V, +5V is at 5.03V, +12V is at 11.76V
So anyway its prime stable etc. But when ever the system has been powered off, and unplugged the first time I power on it always fails to post with the d-link indicator lights indicating a CPU failure. Hold down the power button and it reboots. Power the machine off, but don't disconnect wall power powers back on just fine.
This is strange, since I use the surge protector to turn off speakers, etc! Its also annoying, I used to have a MSI K7D-L Master 2xXP CPU's with the same hardware witht eh exception of the Geil RAM, and of course cpu, and mobo and never had any problems with a cold boot. any suggestions?Yeah I tried having only one stick of ram in the machine, and it hangs on a cold boot when its been unplugged/or powersupply switched off. Reboot again and no problems. I tried just having the geil installed, and the corsair stick installed same problem. I have ordered a second Geil Ultra PC3200 stick so I'll have matched sticks and will be able to run at 400mhz FSB. The lack of a manual memory speed setting overide in the bios is frustrating. Yes I know the speed is more or less set by the CPU but there must be some override mechinism if you can slow it down....
I have also tried with just a video card installed, and one stick of ram to see if the problem would go away. No GO. One thing to mention is I had a Radeon 9700pro that I got from new egg refurbed that I had to send back becasue the card would not power on when the system was booted, unless you disconnected the power lead got the warning message, and then powered off and reconnected the power lead. Possibly this card may have damaged something else? OR the mobo was bad and damaged the card? The mobo was new, the ram (geil), CPU, and 9700pro were all refurbs. Everything else was from a previous dual processor system and was working fine.
Both of the Western digitals are set as masters and each are on their own seperate ide channels. The Promise FastTrack100 TX4, has 4 IDE channels and the HD's are connect to channel 1 and channel 2 on the FastTrack controller.
Specifically what happens is if the power has been off, I turn the power on, hit the power button. Lights come on, the cd-rom drives lights start blinking, fans come on, and I hear this kinda of poping sound out of the speakers like the kind of sound you get when you first power on the machine but it happens a second time about 2 seconds after powering on the machine, and it just sits in this kind of hung up state, hitting the reset button does nothing. Then I power off power back on and it POSTS, and back to normal. So long as the system is never disconnected from the power source while it is off, it will power back on the first time. This is really strange I've never had a system do this before. I'm beginning to wonder if I just have a bad/faulty board and ought to RMA it? -
Z68A-GD80 B3 Random cold boot issues
No mater if system is set to optimized defaults or Overclocked I randomly get odd boot behavior ranging from slow boots to no boots
Symptoms:
delays at post on blank screen with exception of "A2" and or "B3" displayed in the bottom right hand side of the screen.
Generally after stops looking for a floppy to boot to, which makes no sense at all there is not even a floppy header or bios option to disable.
I can have three days in a row with no boot issues at all.
Note: PC and all peripherals are connected to My Tripp Lite 1200w UPS which is connected to a dedicated 20 amp circuit with hospital grade receptacle.
I have the board speaker attached to the board to broadcast the beep codes.
When a good boot happens I hear three beeps and a final short beep all in fairly quick succession.
During a failed post the beeps come slower with a greater duration between beeps and one less beep
Sometimes it sounds like 5 beeps in total but that is with a good post 4 quick beeps and a final marginally longer beep.
Since their is no post code display with this board I'm left with wondering what these beeps mean on the Z68 boards.
Also of note the Corsair H70 CPU cooler I have attached to the mobo CPU header for the pump and the Mobo fan 2 header for the H70 fans, so I can monitor the RPMs start very slowly not unlike a jet turbine begins slowly and gradually builds momentum. I only mention this because it does not act this way on other boards I have tried the cooler. Especially when bios setting were set properly which bring me to what I have tried to resolve the situation.
I've been able to stabilize the board with OC genie and manually at 4.8, 4.7, and 4.6 MHz with 1600 and 1866 memory speeds. To be clear I consider, 20 pass max mem of LinX, 10 hrs prime 95 w/o error and 200% coverage HCI design Memtest (two instances "usable" and "all remaining") with no errors stable.
Further more I've been able to stabilize Turbo Boost at x49 1core, x48 2cores, x47 3cores and x46 4cores with little more than a Vcore adjustment away from default settings.
The issue remains intermittent cold boot issues.
I haven't had a system pass these test and have cold boot issues since the NF2 days.
What I've tried:
bumping Vcore way past minimum required to boot to any given clock down to 4.2 (1.2v)
bumping CPU I/O same as above
running at default
running at default with XMP
running default manually set RAM timings and volts
running with the above with EuP 2013 disabled
Smart Fan disabled and enabled
disable a boot devices except actual boot drive
tried two different Corsair 850 watt PSU.
Questions:
What are the beep codes for this board?
When will we see a bios update to fix the multiple UEFI interface problems and possibly this issue as well?
I thought I bought an enthusiast motherboard yet RPMs from motherboard fan headers are only monitored 1&2 headers.
I use Aida64 Extreme to monitor temps and voltages but conspicuously missing are things like VTT, SA and PLL voltages and the temps for same.
Is this normal?
are they lacking sensors on this board?
or do I have a defective board?
Final Q
When Aida64 is running CPUz current an previous version will not run on this board. I have spoken to the developer of CPUz Franck and Aida and for the moment it seems to be related to this board only but the failure is consistent even after format and reload. CPUz and Aida64 are known to work/coexist on similar Z68 boards. So my question is, Is this a known issue for this board?
Amendment to the system specs below
I have two opt drives attached to the SataIII (white) headers in AHCI mode the Blue Ray drive is not discoverable in IDE mode. Blue Sata ports 3,4 are configured in a Raid-0 array and 5 & 6 have WD 640 Caviar Blk drives respectively port 7 is empty.My apologies for posting this in the wrong section. K9A Platinum cold boot problems + Other stuff
Hi lads,
Have a few things to ask about the K9A
First the cold boot issue. If the machine is fully powered off for a while and i boot it, it seems to loop at the point where it powers the IDE drives over and over again. This is all before display initializes If i power it off and back on again it will then boot fine. Sometimes i even get an error about overclocking failure even though i'm not OC'n
Second : Anyone else with a K9A. Do the Sata controllers in XP show up as using drivers from 2001? ie. XP drivers. Even after installing chipset drivers.
They just come up as 2 primary and 2 secondary controllers. I'd have expected these to at least have some ATI referance.
Third : USB problems in XP. External drives cause the machine to hard lock, but using a belkin USB card, there are no issues at all. Very annoying

Think Bas meant the drivers for the motherboard, not the hard disks. Mostly in America, a drive is a hard disk, while in Europe a driver is a software program for a particular device, for example the network card.

So, there is my problem :
I bought a computer with a P67A-GD80 B3 motherboard. It worked very well since the beginning, but I noticed sometimes it takes me one, two or several attempts to boot my computer (it turns on, immediately turns off with a "click", turns on, etc. And when it turns on, all the led and fans are ok).
And recently, I started having windows warning messages : "please close X programmes, not enough memory".
note : my RAM is G.SKILL Ripjaws X F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL 8GB 2X4GB DDR3-1600 CL9-9-9-24 Memory
and finally one night I made the mistake to put my computer on sleep mode. Since I am unable to start it again (always that loop : turns on, turns off, turns on, ...)
I looked on several forums and saw the cold boot issue, so I tried different things :
- clear the cmos
- move my RAM, tried with one stick, changed the plot
nothing. And i'm uncomfortable taking off the components to test them or other stuffs since I don't want to break anything.
So my question is : can it be my RAM which is dead (weird, because it doesn't work even with one stick and the other removed)
I ordered a new RAM, but is there something else I should do, i'm quite lost actually.

One thing I can make out with your problem is that as it is a memory issue then either your RAMs have gone wrong or its the CPU/Socket.
I wrote CPU because the CPU has memory controller.So,check for some bent pins on the motherboard socket maybe?
P.S. : Always keep a 2 GB DDR3 spare RAM (normal ones : 1333 Mhz) as it helps to troubleshoot the PC much easily.It just takes one component out of the suspected hardware failure :P(This was suggested to me by one of the moderators in here) -
K7N2 Delta-L: Strange cold boot problem & solution
My K7N2 Delta-L has a problem cold booting when the vcore is set in the bios at 1.65v of higher. After a cold boot, you get a blank black screen. I noticed that even if you run at default speeds but set the vcore to 1.65v of higher the problem still occurs. There is no problem rebooting however.
I found the following solutions:
1. After you power up and get a blank, hit the reset button.
2. Don't unplug your PC. My PC is connected to a AVR and after I power down the PC I usually turn the AVR off. If i do this, than the computer will have a booting problem if I try to boot it up 30 minutes later or so. Now if I don't unplug it/power off the AVR than everything is fine.
I don't understand why it acts the way it does though.
Does anyone know of any other solutions?Have you cleared the cmos. If you do be sure you have the power turned off don't move the cmos jumper with the power on.
I found that turning off power at power supply and unpluging, than turning on the computer the fans will spin just a little this drains all the power. Clear cmos 2-3 than return to
1-2 position.
Than plug the power back in and turn it back on, than try the computer again. -
System boot failure after upgrade from linux3.13.8-1 to linux3.14.6-1
I have tried to update the kernel again from 3.13 to 3.14 again, but no luck.
My arch system boot failure with black screen, tried [ctrl]+[alt]+[F1-6] and nothing happen, no any recure shell prompt out.
Then I boot with kernel debug parameters

althrough the screen was black, when I reboot and chroot into my system,

I searched on internet, I think this is caused by my graphic card(ATI 5750), but I have no idea to solve it
I don't know my system boot failure due to these error or another things.
my PC specs:
motherbroad - gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3 (bios ver - F11)
cpu - i5-750
display - ati 5750
os - arch 64bit
Currently, I have downgraded back to 3.13.
I hope someone can give me some idea,

If they are not the only problem, at least your logs would be easier to examine for other problems. -
Laptop screen just goes dark and i have to cold boot
Hello.
My Macbook Pro 2.66Ghz i7, running 10.8 keeps crashing, in various programmes and its getting annoying.
The screen just goes dark but the lights stay on on the keyboard (if thats any help) and i have to cold boot.
Ive got a crash log from console if anyone can help please.

The repeated kernel panic you're experiencing is a common issue on the mid-2010 MacBook Pro 15". I have the same laptop and the same issue. It's caused by the descrete graphics card. One solution, albeit a bit disappointing and temporary, is to use an application called gfxCardStatus. It runs in the statusbar and tells you which GPU is running. You can use the application to set your laptop to use the integrated GPU only, which will put an end to your kernel panics. But if you are using applications which require heavy graphics (such as photoshop and most video games), you'll just have to count your luck.
Some other users have had their motherboard successfully replaced. Take it to an Apple Store and ask them to run a GPU test. They should find the error (a manufacture defect, it seems) and replace your motherboard, with or without warranty. I hope this helps.

Hi,
I am having a few problems with bootcamp on my imac. When i tried to move the bootcamp partition on windows 7 into free space, it crashed and turned off. Ever since i have had the error 'Missing operating system' and it fails to boot. I have some very important files on the bootcamp partition. Is it possible to recover these files or even to restore the bootcamp partition to it's original state? I do not have a backup of my bootcamp partition. Another problem i have is that ever since i tried to expand my macintosh HD partition into free space, when i hold alt while booting up (to choose which partition to boot like i normally do), the bootcamp partition has stopped appearing. This means that i cannot even boot the windows 7 bootcamp partition anymore!
So basically here are my 2 questions:
How can i restore/recover files from Bootcamp with Boot Failure - Missing operating system error?
How can i make the Bootcamp partition appear in Startup Disk and when i hold the option key while starting up my computer to allow me to boot windows 7?

I know that bootcamp (disk0s4) hasn't been fully deleted since it appears in disk utility (i cant do anything to it though)
And here is the error i see when i try to launch bootcamp (back when i was actually able to boot up bootcamp to the error screen)WinClone 3 is OS X and saves Windows image it makes for restore - that should work but you will have to try and you would need to make a new image unless it also works with a native Windows system restore image. It is now supported and has come a long way.

Paragon Clone OS works and does disk-to-disk clone just like CCC you end up with two bootable drives. But does not work with your setup. It would let you clone and move your Windows install to an SSD or another disk drive though and be bootable.
During its clone process it checks for errors which is very helpful and lets you know - something CCC and others should adopt more of.

AppleHFS - the abilty to mount and read HFS volumes can be notorious.
I would rearrange and redo your storage setup and how you use the 4-5 internal hard drive bays. -
ATI Graphics card not detected on cold boot, works on warm boot
Hi All,
I hope you can help me out with this.
I'm using Radeon HD7850 with ATI-Catalyst.
The issue is, if I do a cold boot (physically turn off the power, turn back on) the system won't boot into X, only tty.
At this point, a reboot works fine.
Or if I don't turn off the power, just shutdown and reboot (warm boot), it works ok.

Setting the PCI BusID in Xorg.conf seems to have no effect, even if I set it to 6:0:0 or 7:0:0, its still the same.

The open source driver doesn't support my card yet. I tried installing it first since its the recommended driver, but Xorg couldn't detect any display at all.
It seems the PCI BusID is not being read from the xorg.conf file. There's auto detection everytime the PC boots.
