Cold start problems...?

I know it sounds ridiculous, but my computers are used to work in pretty warm environment. Now, since we have those low temperatures in Florida, especially over night, I experience a lot of problems with starting them. Can it be some internal battery problems ?
Quicksilver 933: Would keep on coming up with the "You need to restart your computer" - message after seconds of spinning the start wheel (grey screen with apple symbol). Guess what.. I though, the HD is done, took it out, put it into my double processor and ran DW on it with no problem. It appeared on the desktop. Put it back into the Quicksilver and the starting problem occurs again.
iBook G4: No way to get it started. It turns the starting wheel for minutes and then the blue screen appears, where you can move the cursor, but that's it...tried 15 times, no change.
Anybody with an idea ?
Thanks
bafomet

Well.. I lived all my life in Europe (Germany) and know what kind of cold you are talking about. But it really feels cold after years in Florida, what happens right now..
In the meantime I tried more options with no results. Restarted from the CD, was able to run DW and Disk Utility on both computers and didn't get them to run.. The iBook came up with an index code failure, but amazingly you can run DiskWarrior and it seems no problem..
I wouldn't know how to run Hardware Test, if they are not starting..
Thanks
bafomet
P.S. Have another issue now on my double G4 with node system failure... crazy... Have 4 macs at home and just one barely runs, the one I'm writing from. I really didn't want to blame the cold but now they are 3...

    Hello!
My name is Robert and I am network engineer for the Cisco SBSC. This is the correct place for the ESW500 series.
From the error messages you are seeing, I would recommend to disable the Bonjour service to see if that helps with the reboots. I am currently looking into the error messages you are getting to see if there is a solution. I would recommend giving us a call as well for immediate assistance on the error messages. • Q5 booting problem: cold start every time

    Hi,
I've recently changed from a Curve 9320 to the new Q5 and I am more than happy about this phone - however, there is one problem: Whenever I turn the Q5 off, switching it on will inevitably result in a cold start which takes about 2 min. before I can use the phone again.
I have already spoken to my dealer (O2 in Germany) but they just don't know anything about BB devices so hopefully someone here can help me getting this fixed or deciding whether I need to get a new phone instead...
    Thanks in advance!
    Armin

    My blackberry 8320 take about 3min , my 9300 2min and my 8520 4min
The Curve series is better than the Q series. I never see so much problem in one phone , I can't  Call with it  !
The 9320 is a good model and the battery is excellent,  i may buy it or the 9360 because i can't stay with a phone who can't call .

  • Two w2408h monitors, extended desktop..2nd not recognized at cold start?

    Hi All:
HPe9180f with Vista 64 bit Home Premium.
I have two HP w2408h monitors, purchased and installed on the above computer, when new.  I have tried Tech Support who have certainly tried to take "ownership" of my issue, but with no solution, I have given up.
My issue is that I can work correctly with both monitors, extended desktop mode, if I never shut off my computer....if I do, the second monitor will not turn on during a cold start.  My workaround, discovered by accident, is to log on in a non-admin user, wait until all programs, etc are loaded and then Restart....my second monitor then activates.  Does anybody know what to do to do to make Windows/ Bios recognize that I have two monitors permanently in use at all times, especially at startup?

GC, I would search for an updated driver for you video card/chip.  This sounds like it may be a driver problem.  Video and Audio problems are very difficult to diagnose from afar.  So, I always begin with the most obvious solutions.  Just call me "Mr. Obvious".

  • PSC 1315 faded stripes when printing after a cold start

    Hello All,
I have an HP PSC 1315 that is about three years old and was working fine until it recently started printing with faded greyish or white stripes across the page in grayscale printouts. This only happens immediately after a cold start, that is, after not using the printer for about a day.
I've found two temporary ways to deal with the problem. First I can just let it keep printing. By the second or third page, the quality is OK. Second, I can prime the cartridge head by running it across a warm moist paper towel before I print. Neither of these works as a permanent solution, though.
I store the printer in a climate controlled room. The temperature in the room sometimes falls to 62 nowadays but when the problem started occuring the room was the 75-80 range. The humidity in the room is about 50%. I don't think the temperature of the room is causing the cartridge head to dry out, but I could be wrong. Does anyone have any suggestions for how to solve this problem permanently? Thanks.

  • My G4 desktop won't  cold start. I have to plug in to the outlet for about 15 minutes every time. Can anyone explain why?

My G4 desktop won't cold start. I have to plug in to the outlet for about 15 minutes every time. Can anyone explain why? Otherwise, the desktop runs fine.
The battery is new, and I zapped the little button on the main board once. I've noticed that the power supply plug is a little longer than the usual one for G4, and the AGP slot has an extra slot, which is black and about half inch long.

    Hi Ursula,
the AGP slot has an extra slot, which is black and about half inch long.
I believe that is for ADC Monitor power if you had one, or a card with ADC, like the little tab on this one...
I think your startup problem is bad capacitors in the power supply or on the logic board, and the need to bleed off their charge before they work right to start.

  • Blackscreen cold start workaround and software conflict

I, too, have the black-screen on cold-reboot problem, and resetting the PRAM is the best solution I have found, save this one: when I start, I always choose my startup disk by holding down the [option] key during reboot. This lets me choose the windows partition, the mac partition or the external mac partition on my firewire drive (I replaced my hard drive within a week of purchase.) If this fails, and it does 5% of the time, resetting the PRAM multiple times always brings it back.
Initially, I had the problem when I took the Macbook in for the superdrive not accepting most disks issue, and the system failed to reboot at the Genius bar (if it's gonna happen, better it happens on their time, not mine.) After a week, a new logic board and a new optical drive, I can definitely say this is a firmware problem, not a hardware problem. I have done a complete reinstall of the OS, erasing windows, and the problem has not resurfaced since. I am pretty certain that the issue is in a firmware conflict between OSX and MS Windows. Since I only need to use Windows once a month for a specific task, I put my windows installation on a small (30 GB) SATA drive that lives in a desk drawer for 27 days a month. When I need to use it, I swap hard drives.
Windows seems to be causing the conflict here, because when I do have the black screen, if I [option] on startup and use the Windows installation, the machine works fine (except that it is running Windows). No PRAM reset is needed to use the Windows side of the machine.

there are two different suggetions in the forum on how to fix this anoying problem. I tried both. dont know which one helped, but since I applied the "fix" two days ago, the problem has been absent.
    What to do:
Fix 1) Start up from the original apple dvd (insert the dvd and hold down the "c" key under start up). When the loading is over - DONT START the software install but under tools choose start-up disk, and choose the hard disk system folder. Then simply choose restart.
Fix 2) In system preferences togle the screen settings away from the standard setting to some other setting, and then back again.
Voila.. so far it seems to work. The explanation is, that resetting the p-ram (optioncommand+pr) deletes some default preferences, that undortunately then are missing.
    But the above fixes...fixes that

  • Help -- Recurring Kernel panic at cold start-up

    imac g5 -- 1.8 ghz ppc -- 1 gb ddr sdram -- os x 10.4.11
The last two days my iMac has been having kernel panics at login after a cold start up -- off more than an hour or so. I've repaired the disk permissions, and disconnected peripherals, but it still happens, and the cold startup leads me to believe it's hardware... maybe ram or something? What do you think? Should I just keep it on 24/7? Is it possible the ram needs to be replaced and if so, how much would that cost?
    here is the panic log:

KPs are usually caused by a hardware problem - frequently RAM or USB devices. When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, kbd & mouse. Do you experience the same problems?
Look at this link: *Testing RAM* @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM
Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.

  • Computer won't POST on cold starts

When I turn on the computer after not having used it for over an hour or so, it won't post. Everything turns on, except the monitor. The only way I can turn off my system after it posts, and the monitor is still off, is by turning off the power supply. I found a way of turning it on when doing a cold start, but its really annoying to do. I do this by turning off the PSU, and unplug the monitor from my vid card, and then plug it back in. After doing this, system will turn on no problem. How do I solve this? I know monitor and vid card work good, since they work perfect in my other system.
Oh one more thing, after having a successful start, and having loaded Windows, my CD-RW is looping, the light stays on, until I open/close it, then it stops. Any suggestions?
    Oh and I use K8N Neo-FSR.
Edit: PSU is an Antec TruePower 380. 18 amps on the +12v line.

    Hi,
I've had lot's of trouble with my system. It didn't POST either. The problem you describe is not the same, but I see you are using the same video card as I do.
My problem was 'resolved' by upgrading the bios version 1.52
I've seen quite a lot of messages indicating that it could be the power supply, being too weak etc... Personally, I do not think it is. In my view it has something to do with timing, and bios 1.52 resolved it for me.
Good luck with it; this issue is a time consumer ...

  • No sound on cold start after upgrading to Lion

I am running the 27" iMac with dual hard drives and have recently upgraded to Lion.  Two things are happening.
    1.  On cold start / boot up, my system has no sound.  And by no sound I mean - no sound.  When I go to the Sound option in System Preferences, everything is greyed out and I can not adjust or access any of the controls.  The only solution has been to immediately restart my computer.  After restart, everything is fine.
    2.  On cold start / boot up, sometimes I receive a pop up telling me that TestGen is not installed properly and to please re-start.  Of course, since I have no sound I'm automatically doing that.  Could be that these to things are related somehow?  I don't know.
Lastly, and I'm not adding this to the list because there is already a thread about it . . but I will mention it . . I am getting error messages trying to play certain videos "This video requires Quicktime which is not supported by this version of iTunes."  Oh yeah?  Since when?  The workaround is that you apparently have to delete the video from your Library -- DO NOT DELETE FILE FROM HARD DRIVE -- and re-add to your Library.  I think this has to be the dumbest bug out there right now.
But what I'd really like is to not have to re-start my computer every d$!@n time just to be able to have sound.
Tired of the Lion errors.  Apparently we're all Beta testers <-- lame humor.

I have one of the Mid 2010 27-inch iMac's running 10.7.3 without any audio problems like you describe. You mentioned that you have two hard drives. Do you have the factory installed hard drive + SSD, or did you install it yourself?
You mentioned TestGen. What version do you have installed? It appears that the latest version of the TestGen browser plug-in is 7.5.1.
    Have you tried resetting PRAM?
Have you tried booting in Safe Mode to see whether booting without all of the extra kernel extensions makes the issue go away? If it does then I would look consider reinstalling Lion and evaluating the various utilities your've installed which may be affecting your audio.

  • K8N NEO4 Platinum cold boot problem with 165 opteron?

I have this board and have a cold boot problem with my opteron. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Its starting to get very anooying.
    K8N NEO4 Platinum
    165 opty dual core
    2X1GB Ballistix PC4000
    160GB sata2
    7800GTX
    X-Fi platinum
    600 watt seasonic PSU

Well I am running them at the rated speed of 250 and the rated timings of 3-4-4-10 on the rated 2.8 volts. Ballistix have been known to die quickly when you throw to many volts at them for some reason. I dont get the cold boot problem with the OCZ. Once I finally get it to boot with the Ballistix it works just fine but the next morning I play hell to get it to boot again. I dont even get the main screen to let me get into bios. It just stays black. I have done all kinds of stress testing and ran memtest with no problems. I am really at a loss here.

  • X230t no bluetooth after cold start

    Hi everyone,
Recently I upgraded to Windows 8.1 and after "cold" start bluetooth doesn't work and is not present in Device manager and in system tray. After restart all is OK.
The problem occurs only after "Shut down"!
Any ideas how to solve this problem?
    Thanks in advance

I have one of the Mid 2010 27-inch iMac's running 10.7.3 without any audio problems like you describe. You mentioned that you have two hard drives. Do you have the factory installed hard drive + SSD, or did you install it yourself?

  • Cannot successfully boot from cold start - why?

Subject line says it all. New Mac mini and Lacie mini 250 GB external firewire drive. Loaded 10.4.2 on both.
Sys. Prefs set to select Lacie mini as startup disk. But from a cold start always get a boot using Mac mini. If I next do a restart (nothing turned off) it does work correctly in that the boot is now from the Lacie mini.
When I do the cold start boot the Lacie mini is not spinning (on, but no disk noise). So how is it suppose to be spun up in time to provide the desired OS?
    Any help appreciated.

This is my final reply to an earlier thread about this sibject. Are you leaving the Lacie powered up too?
The start up delay seems to be the problem. I was leaving the firewire hd powered up ie: always on. If I power it down at shut down and switch it on just before booting it spins up and the boot grabs hold of it no problem. Oddly enough the Maxtor that I used before did not give this problem. I left it powered up and it booted OK. Many thanks for the tip!
