Cold weather bad for iphone?

I had my iphone on the charging dock last night as usual, but the window was open and fan was on low. it got to approx 40ºf last night. Well I woke up this morning and it wouldnt turn on. Once the phone warmed up it turned on, but was in recovery mode! Then I got to work, plugged it in to itunes and it reset it, and all my data is gone!! All pictures, music, contacts, etc. It's like I just took a new phone out of the box! What gives?

Sportrider12584,
The iPhone product specifications is at this link states:
iPhone Specs:
Environmental requirements
Operating temperature: 32° to 95° F (0° to 35° C)
Nonoperating temperature: -4° to 113° F (-20° to 45° C)
Relative humidity: 5% to 95% noncondensing
Maximum operating altitude: 10,000 feet (3000 m)
http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html
Recovery mode indicates that the iPhone wasn't able to complete its startup check. If it has gotten too cold, I would recomend letting it warm up some more, and then reset it before trying a restore.
Restoring the iPhone reformats the iPHone, and reloads the iPhone's firmware and software. Once you have restored the iPhone, it is just like a new iPhone, unless you choose to load synced data from backup. However, information since the last sync is lost. Photos that have not been downloaded to the computer are also lost during a restore.

  • Using a power bank good or bad for iphone battery lifespan?

I currently use iphone 5, i see many aid product made now such as power bank,
but a question comes in my mind , is that good or bad for our battery lifespan?

Are you referring to cases with battery packs in them?
If so, most have a switch to turn the battery in the case on or off.
Having the iPhone or any phone in a battery case is neither good or bad.  It is merely a way to extend the "life" of the device between charges without the need to physically plug the device in as there is always the extra battery onboard.

  • Cold Weather Temperatures for Mac Pro Book

Hi I have meeting tomorrow, near the mountains, I wanted to take my mac Book Pro and keep it locked in the car for 3 to 4 hours while I ski.....before the meeting.
The temperature should be around 20 degrees farenheit,
is this too cold? Or should I bring it into the lodge and place it in a locker?
    Thanks,
    D.

Straight from the specs page on Apple's site:
    +*# Operating temperature: 50° to 95° F (10° to 35° C)*+
    +*# Storage temperature: -13° to 113° F (-24° to 45° C)*+
You should be fine so far as storage goes... but you'll want to let it warm up a bit when you bring it in before you use it. I would agree with Doug however... unless you don't feel comfortable with the security of the lockers. Notebooks are fairly delicate devices and exposing them to extremes in temperatures is probably not a great idea. So long as you don't do it that often, you'll probably be fine. Humidity is another issue. Generally... when it's cold out, inside humidity is fairly low. However... as you mentioned you will be in the mountains... there are lots of places where you can go into the mountains to ski during the day... and come back to moderate temps in the afternoon. In those cases, the warmer location may be more humid. In that case, your notebook can act the same way a glass of ice water does and get condensation build up.

  • IPhone 3GS Camera Crashes iOS 4.3 When Device Used In Cold Weather

I was in Chicago today where the weather was in the low 40's (high 20s with the windchill). As I was sightseeing and using my iPhone to shoot casual snapshots, the OS completely crashed when I was trying to take the picture. My iPhone has never crashed for any reason, but I shrugged it off and then restarted the device. I took two more pictures, and then the phone again crashed on the third picture. After another restart, the phone started crashing every time I took a picture without exception.
Fearing the worst that my phone was about to die on me while on a business trip, I headed back to the car and headed for the hotel. As I was driving back, I got to thinking that my phone has never been in weather this cold before (I'm from California). As soon as I got to my room, I put the camera beneath the heating vent and allowed it to warm up. Once it felt like it was room temperature, I picked it up and started shooting pictures to see if I could get it to crash again. After forty pictures, it was still working.
Are there any known issues with the camera sensor on the iPhone 3GS in cold weather? Another poster from Eastern Europe seems to be having the same problem with the same model phone:

  • Jabber for iPhone cannot call over Expressway. Expressway says: Bad Extension

    Hi,
I've had Expressway working but now calls from/to Jabber for iPhone fail with a message "Bad Extension" in Expressway-E.
Is there someone that is willing to share the search rules of Expressway-E required that are required for Jabber to make/receive calls. I think I accidentally deleted one or changed one.
    Regards,
    Erik

Yes, I got an answer from TAC and it is was the solution to my problem.
It had to do with announcing IPv6 support by the clients. (header "Requires: anat")
By creating a new Common Device Configuration that disables IPv6 (IP Addressing Mode), thus IPv4 only, and assigning this common device configuration to all devices using MRA, solved my problem.
Let me know if this also fixes your problems!

  • Is using a 12 volt charger bad for my iPhone 5?

Is using a 12 volt charger bad for my iPhone 5?  I just purchased the iPad Air and it came with the same lightning cable that was included with my iPhone 5.  The only difference is that the charger that came with my iPhone is a 10 volt and the one that came with my iPad Air is a 12 volt.  I find it would be easier if I could just use one cable instead of two, but I'm afraid that the12 volt charger would mess up my iPhone.  Can anyone help answer this question?

There is no problem using the iPad charger with the iPhone. I've been doing it for years because it's just easier. The iPhone will stop charging when it reaches capacity. If you look at the Apple Online Store, you'll see that the 12-volt charger they sell is listed as working for both iPhones and iPads.
    Best of luck.

  • My iPhone shut off due to cold weather, will it turn on again?

I went outside for a brief moment and when i went back inside, my phone shut off and will not turn on. I am hoping it will turn on eventually. Any suggestions?

a brief moment in cold weather should not harm the phone.  I went outside today with my phone in my pocket to start my car and it was -4°f.  Try to turn it on when it has been in room temperature for a while.

  • Does anyone have a chart that translates the new weather icons for the IOS7 iPhone?

There are many icons inside the new weather app in iPhone update IOS7 which are difficult to understand. Can you confirm our best guess that the weather for Wednesday and Thursday will be windy? Hope we are right. Does anyone have a chart that deciphers all of those symbols?

Thank you Templeton. Much apprecaite your answers and how swiftly they arrived. There are other symbols that we find confusing. I can't replicate more of them right now. But if you, or anyone knows of a chart that has interpreted most of them, I would be very grateful. I have beeen looking online for quite some time, and am surprised this hasn't been done...at the very least by Apple or Yahoo.

The iPhone has a very smart charger built into the phone. The thing that plugs in to the wall is not a charger; it is just a power source. Likewise, the Lightning cable is not a charger; it is wires plus a digital to analog converter built into the plug. The charger itself is inside the phone, and it will not allow the battery to be overcharged. It stops charging when the battery reaches 1000%. So the best way to manage your battery is to charge it overnight, every night. Whether you think it needs charging or not. That way it will always start the day with a full charge.

If you lost sounds for keyboard clicks, games or other apps, email notifications and other notifications, system sounds may have been muted.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the control center if you are running iOS 7. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to control center . Tap on the bell icon and system sounds will return.
If you are running iOS 5 or iOS 6, the system sound control is in the task bar at the bottom. Double tap the home button and swipe all the way to the right in the task bar to get to the speaker icon on the left side. Tap on that and the sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock can be accessed in the same manner as described above.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

  • Altitude/cold issues for iPhone 4?

I've had an iPhone for the past 3 years, and have updated this past weekend to the latest edition (4). I've been singing the praises of the phone at work for a few years now and have almost convinced my boss to get one. He just came into my office and we talked about this issue:
He's a mountain climber. He needs a new GPS, but has heard the iPhone has a GPS chip in it. His understanding is that the phone has GPS issues above 10,000 and below 32 degrees., He is subjected to both conditions on serious climbs. Is there an app that can help him despite the temps/altitude? Is the 10,000/32 just a rough number?
Any mountain climbers out there that can assist me?

Well here are the specs about environment ranges for iPhone
    Environmental requirements
    * Operating temperature: 32° to 95° F
    (0° to 35° C)
    * Nonoperating temperature: -4° to 113° F
    (-20° to 45° C)
    * Relative humidity: 5% to 95% noncondensing
    * Maximum operating altitude: 10,000 feet (3000 m)
Not sure how an App can alter any of that. A good case may but still face altitude issues.

  • Any Problems Now that the Cold Weather is Here

Just trying to find out if anyone is having any problems with their iPhone now that the cold weather is setting in.
I thought there might be issues with the touch screen or other problems related to running the applications since its cold. I heard some issues with screen cracking in the cold.
Today it was the first real cold day in Philadelphia, and for the first time ever for me after four years of using an iPod (mini, classic and nano) that I had a skipping incident. Also, for the first time since updating to 1.1.1 (now 1.1.2), Safari kept crashing when the iPod was playing music.
Just curious if anyone has issues about cold weather use.
    Thanks.

Wow! I would think the claws on the "bear" fingers would scratch the screen for sure!
I would almost guarantee that the cold weather will run your battery down faster than usual. Thats what happens to batteries in the cold. The operating conditions for the iPhone are also stated as follows:
    Environmental requirements
    Operating temperature: 32° to 95° F (0° to 35° C)
    Nonoperating temperature: -4° to 113° F (-20° to 45° C)
Relative humidity: 5% to 95% noncondensing
    Maximum operating altitude: 10,000 feet (3000 m)
So I would recommend against pushing your luck in the freezing cold or you could have a nicely voided warranty and a broken iPhone.
