I'm really not certain why clients always want in-house
employees when tele-working has been proven more beneficial in a
number of areas, not to mention the fact that a
programmer/developer rarely works 9-5 ... you cannot force ideas
and/or productivity in a devloper scenario to only operate between
set hours.
Many ideas and concepts pop up in the wee hours of the
morning, in the shower, late at night etc.
I have been developing with CF since 3.5 (Allaire), am a MS
MVP with strengths in SQL, Office, IIS, and a multitude of their
other tools, plus have been developing CF apps within my own
company for over 11 years.

Does Adobe have some beef with ColdFusion developers?
I think I will be keeping FB 4 after the trial expires. There are some very nice things about it and I especially like the new styling/skinning tools.
I am not impressed with the new “data-centric” paradigm in FB 4. I see it as Adobe’s way to market FB 4 to hobbyists and other people who are not really serious about development, of whom there are many. Other than repeatedly pitching that you can do a bunch of things “without writing a single line of code”, there is not a lot of information out there about how the thing really works, and am hoping that situation improves as time passes. At this point, I am not planning to use those data-centric features, except perhaps for quick prototyping. Anybody who agrees can add to this thread: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/617704?tstart=30, in which I describe a few things I learned while playing with these features.
I do my Flex back end work with ColdFusion and am also trying the new CF Builder. The $300 bucks it costs doesn’t affect us CFers because it comes with FB 4. From what I have seen so far, it does not do much more than the ColdFusion Extensions for Flex Builder, which were free.
But there is one thing about which I am somewhat miffed: they took away two of the best things about the extensions:
the ACtionScript to CFC wizard;
the CFC to ActionScript wizard.
Those make it very easy to generate a CFC from an AS value object and viceversa. I tried to install them in FB 4, but it won’t allow it, generating an error about a dependency or something.
Those 2 items are great time - and error - savers. Without them, you have to do double the coding. I can’t figure out Adobe's reasoning for not making them available anymore; they are already there and all we need is a way to install them. Is Adobe so intent in pitching this “without writing a single line of code” that they are willing to take this great tool away from us?
Am I the only one who would like to have these available?
I would really appreciate it if someone can provide some logical reason for this and please, CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG OR MISSING SOMETHING!
Greetings to all,
CarlosFollowing Ansury’s suggestion, I did some more digging (which I should
have done from the beginning) and found 4 extensions to CF builder that
are there for the taking. By installing two of them, I can now generate
an AS class from a CFC and create a mapping between the two; but I
cannot generate a CFC from an AS class. The FB 3 wizards did this both
ways, but this is better than nothing.
That's good news. The rest you'll probably find out about by doing further reading. I don't use CF, but I really doubt FB4 has less than before.
2. it looks like you have to
call the service each time you want to bind the data to another control
or to somehow use it more than one time. I could not figure out how to
access the data that has come in from a service call and been bound to x
control – and no one in these forums was willing or able to answer that
when I asked the question in a previous post.
Regarding 2, I'm assuming you're talking about PHP, No, you don't have to call the service each time you want to bind the data. You define the service, call it once to bring in the data, then bind to that data using .lastResult because the data is already in.
Here's the process I follow when I need data. I set up the class which let's say has a getRecords() method that returns data. I then use the data/services wizard as usual to introspect the class and set up the return types.
THEN in design mode, I just drag a useless datagrid (that I delete later) onto the screen. With the datagrid on the screen, I drag my method (getData() from the data/services view) to the datagrid. This sets up the service call and wires the dataProvider property of the datagrid. All I do after that is move around the code that's been generated to where I need it, before deleting the useless datagrid.
This defined your service. It can stay where it is.
xmlns:myservice="services.myservice.*"
<myservice:MyService id="myService"
fault="Alert.show('some event fault message')"
showBusyCursor="true" />
<s:CallResponder id="getRecordsResult" />
This is the call to your service that actually brings the data in. I move it to the init() function.
private function init():void{
getRecordsResult.token = myService.getRecords();
Then to use the data returned from getRecords(), you could either instruct the <s:CallResponder itself to wire its data when returns using result.
<s:CallResponder id="getRecordsResult"
result="{doFurtherDataProcessing()}" />
or tap into the data from anywhere at anypoint using lastResult. In this case the list is asking for the data.
<s:List dataProvider="getRecordsResult.lastResult" />
The first way with result means that the source of the data passes it to destination structures. The second way with lastResult means that the destination structures call for the data. But still they call for the data from its inside location, from where it's already sitting inside the app, they don't have to bring it in again from the outside, because the data has already been brought into the app by CallResponder once and is sitting and waiting to be used whenever.
Hope this helps you. For PHP, I recommend you watch the 2 videos by Tom Lane from Adobe on ADC. Must watch and very helpful. Rest will come from use. For CF, not sure, others may pitch in. -

For the old time ColdFusion developers.
I have a venerable ColdFusion 4.5 server, oh how I look forward to
replacing it with a new server - but that is still some months into the
future.
Anyways, I have not looked at this server in a year. Needed to do
something on it today and find all CFM code on the server, including the
ColdFusion Administrator portal is returning the following message:
Error Occurred While Processing Request
Error Diagnostic Information
An error occurred while attempting to establish a connection to the server.
The most likely cause of this problem is that the server is not
currently running. Verify that the server is running and restart it if
necessary.
Unix error number 2 occurred: No such file or directory
This is a Solaris 8, Unix installation of ColdFusion 4.5 Professional.
I am not an administrator on this box so I do not have any permissions
to snoop around beyond what can be accessed through a browser. But,
when my support ticket finally gets to such a sysop, I know they are not
going to know much about ColdFusion. Can any of the old hats on this
list give me some insight on what this error may mean for when they come
asking me.
TIA4.5. Yikes. I feel dirty even reading about it ;-)
Um, I only ever used 4.5 for about my first six months as a dev... CF5 came out then and we jumped to it as soon as we could.
I googled CF "An error occurred while attempting to establish a connection to the server" and came up with this:
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/server_archive/articles/cf_timeouts_and_unresponsive_requests. html
So it sounds like the error is a symptom of a CF restart after too many timed-out requests?

[Slightly OT] Should Developers need a License to Practice?
In the law, medicine and many other types of businesses, the people wanting to pracice need to pass some sort of qualification to practice. However, we daily drop the life of our business into the hands of some random programmer of which we know little about. Given the homework we see hitting this forum, we cant really count college graduation as meaning anything more than the ability to BS your way into a piece of paper. In fact, many of the best programmers I know are without a degree.
However, what if we were to require a professional qualification license to write code? Would it help the industry to reduce the mountains of substandard code? Recently a study I read stated that some 70% of the code in the market was far below standard. Would a licensing qualification bring the programming industry into something more respectful and consistent in quality?
What do you think?
If you agree that there needs to be licensing, what form do you think the process should take. Think about this carefully because exams such as the Java Certification program don't insure any sort of professional competency, merely syntactical competency. So what other means can we use to insure professional competency?some comments...
1) You can't necessarily trust everyone that is licensed in those other professions.
2) There are already many qualification certifications out there, which supposedly do the same thing. It's just that it varies so much from source to source, and people/companies put more or less weight to those certifications. Sun has several Java certifcations you can get, but some people don't see them as worth getting. Sun's Java certifications aren't all about syntax. The programmer one is, but others aren't as much.
3) There are so many different things that could be known, it'd be hard to organize. I know Java generally, Swing, JSP/servlets, several other things. I don't know jack about C++ for Windows programming. So I have to get the certifications that relate to what I know. The bar exam for lawyers, as far as I know, is pretty general, isn't it (correct me if I'm wrong). In that case, it doesn't really say much, cuz a lawyer that has been a corporate lawyer may not be one you want in on a divorce case, for example. At that level, you are not looking at them having passed the bar, only what their resume is. -

LascellesAre you using 11g DB? Did you check this:
7. Enabling Network Services in Oracle Database 11g
By default, the ability to interact with network services is disabled in Oracle Database 11g release 1 (11.1). Therefore, if running Oracle Application Express with Oracle Database 11g release 1 (11.1), use the new DBMS_NETWORK_ACL_ADMIN package to grant connect privileges to any host for the FLOWS_030100 database user. Failing to grant these privileges results in issues with PDF/report printing, specifically, you will get the following error message:
ORA-20001: The printing engine could not be reached because either
the URL specified is incorrect or a proxy URL needs to be specified.
Follow the steps mentioned in the Oracle Application Express Installation Guide, Enabling Network Services in Oracle Database 11g. Also refer to the troubleshooting section in case you receive an ORA-44416: Invalid ACL error after running the previous script. -

How to create a Flex3 project with remote ColdFusion server?
I have a question related to Flex 3 and ColdFusion that it might be simple to answer but I have been struggling with it for a while.
How to create a Flex application using Flex Builder 3 that uses ColdFusion, but the ColdFusion server is not installed locally but in a remote server?
I need to create a Flex application to use with ColdFusion and although this is a simple procedure when we are creating the project in a computer where you have ColdFusion installed locally (as all books shows examples of it), but what if the ColdFusion server is installed in another machine in the network?
My current situation is the following:
- I have Flex Builder 3 install in my PC at work and its workspace is in a folder in the network outside of my PC.
- We have a server (ISWEB1) partition in two drives; C, where the ColdFusion 8 is installed and D where all the files the developers work with reside. The ColdFusion installation runs in a server where IIS is used as the web server.
- I have the drive D on the server ISWEB1 mapped to one of my letter drives and can access it easily
- The drive C on the Server can only be accessed remotely (or through the web to access the ColdFusion admin page) and is not exposed to the network as drive D is.
My problem is, I need to create a Flex 3 application that uses ColdFusion using remote object access service (CF Flash Remoting) but I wanted to point to the installation version on the server ISWEB1 and not to the one installed locally. The Configure ColdFusion Server screen in the Flex Builder asked me for the location of ColdFusion root folder, Web root, and root URL. There is no way I can point to the server (ISWEB1)where ColdFusion is installed as those fields seem to required a address that points to a local install or a mapping on that local server.
The work around that could be used is to use the ColdFusion developers edition I have installed locally and use during the creation of the project in Flex Builder, but then I would have to have all the same data sources, mappings, and CFCs in my the local server in order to test, which seems double work. To aggravate that when you try to test the application Flex writes the files to the local server and unless you have everything available locally it would not work properly. I am trying to avoid duplicating the work. Ideally I would like to test the Flex application on the server where the CF is installed and where the Flex Builder workspace is.Sort of. I found this article below that helped me to connect to the remote CF server using MXML. It seems that you have to create a regular project in Flex with Aplication Server Type set to None and connect to CF using the endpoint attribute of the RemoteObject MXML tag or via AS.
http://www.aliaspooryorik.com/blog/index.cfm/e/posts.details/post/200
However I found out after getting error using the AS3 code to use the endpoint property that
mx.rpc.remoting.RemoteObject does not support the "endpoint" property
whereas mx.rpc.remoting.mxml.RemoteObject does. See link below
http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg101439.html//www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg101439.html
So I had to change my AS3 code by adding a new channel to my RemoteObject using a code similar to the one on the link below (Note that this code uses PHP, when I instantiate myRemoteObject, I do so informing that the destination is "ColdFusion" [new RemoteObject("ColdFusion")], so no need to set destination as in the code on the link below
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/flexcoders/message/120115
I hope that helps you.
