ColdFusion Hosting Recommendations
Probably covered a million times already, but with ColdFusion 9 now in beta it might be worth asking again.
I currently host at Dataride, and have had an incredible experience for six-plus years, but they are still running ColdFusion MX 7 and cannot give me any word on when they plan to upgrade to ColdFusion 8, leaving me to assume that ColdFusion 9 will be no different. That said I'd love to find a new host.
Before I sit and compare those I've found in search engines, and here on adobe.com, I thought I'd ask actual users.
Here's a little wishlist, for those who care to help:
- I need a hosting company that offers shared ColdFusion hosting.
- I need ColdFusion 8 installed.
- I would like a host who is known for upgrading to the latest ColdFusion release as they are made available.
- I need custom error support for .cfm files.
- I need a Microsoft SQL Server database.
- I need a host that only disables the most dangerous of ColdFusion tags (ie. CFREGISTRY, CFEXECUTE).
I've been looking at hostmysite.com, does anyone have a horror story or even praises they wish to share?
I have been using host my site for a while now. They have been a good company to work with all in all. I started with them because they offered free CF8 Beta accounts when it was in Beta. I chatted them the other day to see if they were going to be doing the same with CF9. They informed me that they did not have plans to do so at this time but were testing CF9 so things could always change. Hopefully they will make the switch as soon as possible once CF9 is released.
Most of my work has been with Flex applications using a CF backend. I have not as of yet had any problems with HMS in regards to their configuraitons causing an issue with my code or not being able to use a function that I need. I do not however use a great majority of the functionality CF8 has to offer and I only post sites there when I am testing beta code in a live environment. So I am not so sure my situation would be a good one for one example of what you need. Even still as Hosting partners go I have not been dissapointed.

Coldfusion 9 Recommended Hosting Providers
i am with flinthosts.co.uk and the service is really bad, its been over 2 days and they cant seem to sort out the issue with the server and below is the answer they gave for the issue they have with the server
"It's not a simple problem - u seem to think that every issue is straight foward and solvable with the flick of a switch. Some things are rarely like that.
We are investiating and trying to find the cause of the issue and will update you at a later stage"
so till they can figure it out, the site is having errors and i am stuck in limbo and thats not an answer i can give the client.
would anyone know alternative coldfusion 9 recommended hosting providers. We're running ColdFusion 9 Enterprise on our newest servers, one physical host running five different ColdFusion virtual machines for optimum usage of the Java heap.
As for a guarantee if your application will not work on our platform due to a technical limitation our end then yes, we'll give you your money back no problem. However you can't just change your mind and get a refund, no.
In saying that, I think we've had maybe five people in the five years need a refund, and that includes ASP, PHP, and other platforms as well
If there's anything you need that's out of the ordinary that you think specifically might not work let me know and I'll take a look. -
Hi,
Having had about six months of grief from the staff at
Hostway, we are looking to change hosts. I was wondering if anyone
could recommend some good CF hosts? We're currently running on CFMX
7, but Im open to changing to CF 8 if we find a good host .
Thanks in advance!rollerskatie wrote:

I happily use Godaddy for my personal, vanity web site. But I
understand and accept their limitations. They are
inexpensive, but the
customer service is
NOT ColdFusion savvy and one is probably on
ones own.
For my professional site, I use CFdynamics and have been very
happy with
their service and support for some five years now. Even if
they are a
bit more expensive then some out there. Our site is fairly
self
sufficient and I have only needed to contact them a few times
over the
years. -
Issue with script timeouts - trying to send email mail shots - hosting recommendations?
Background is this - I look after a site for a recruitment agency, which has a backend mySQL database.
It includes a table of potential candidates, which the site owner can search based on various criteria and then send all the returned candidates an email about potential jobs they might be interested in.
I'm using an off the shelf script to send the emails, and have jumped through a few hoops to get this to work, but it looks like we need to move hosting unfortunately.
The script is able to limit emails so that the hosting company doesn't get black flagged as a spammer.
I've set it up with a progress bar in a new window so the site owner can see progress, but easily get back to the rest of the site.
But where we have come unstuck is the script timeout on the server - so even though its set to send emails slowly enough, ie under 500 emails an hour, because of that slow pace, it fails if it takes more then five minutes to send them all as the script times out.
My understanding is that the script includes a line to reset the script timeout value to 0, so enabling the script to keep running until all the emails have been sent. But unfortunately our current hosting company does not allow the script timeout to be reset at the PHP level.
So my question is this - is anyone doing anything similar, and if so, can you recommend any hosting company that does allow the script timeout to be reset at the PHP level?
Because at the minute it seems like a frustrating catch-22 - slow it down to get around the spam issue, and it won't run long enough to send all the emails. Speed it up, and it falls foul of the script timeout.
Any advise on this, or hosting suggestons most welcome!
Thanks.Although there is an AppleScript Forum, Automator can run AppleScripts, so sometimes things can go in either forum. In your script, other than not setting a recipient, you are just getting one of the persons. You need to get a list of your contact information, then build your outgoing messages from that list - for example:
<pre style="
font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
font-size: 10px;
font-weight: normal;
margin: 0px;
padding: 5px;
border: 1px solid #000000;
width: 720px; height: 340px;
color: #000000;
background-color: #FFEE80;
overflow: auto;"
title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor">
set theEmails to {} -- this will be a list of email addresses
set theNames to {} -- this will be a list of names for the greeting
tell application "Address Book"
activate
set theGroup to (choose from list (get the name of every group) with prompt "Choose a Group") as text
if theGroup is "false" then return -- cancel
repeat with aPerson in (get every person of group theGroup) -- build email and name lists
set the end of theEmails to the first item of (get the value of the email of aPerson) -- just the first address
set the end of theNames to the first name of aPerson
end repeat
end tell
tell application "Mail"
repeat with anItem from 1 to (count theEmails) -- make a new message for each entry
tell (make new outgoing message at the front of outgoing messages with properties {subject:"Test Mail"})
set visible to true
get item anItem of theNames
if the result is missing value then -- no name
set the content to "message"
else
set the content to "Dear " & the result & "," & return & return & "message"
end if
make new to recipient at the end of to recipients with properties {address:(item anItem of theEmails)}
end tell
end repeat
activate

Web host recommendations (that works with Mac IMAP Mail)
hi all.
i did a lot of research and moved my sites to a HostGator and after going through all this effort i have been finding my sites are being shut down due to an issue where my IMAP email is pinging their servers and when they see 25 pings (or whatever) they shut down my site.
i have been through an excructiating two months of unchecking IDLE settings, unchecking Push and being told to move to POP (not an option for obvious reasons) and/or alternatively being told it is Mac Mail's fault. i have also been told not to check my email. in order to get a plan where checking my email on HostGator does not result in the shutting down of my website i am being told i have to sign up for a plan that is two and a half times more expensive per month than my previous plan.
i am at the point where it appears the easiest solution may be to get rid of my laptop or my iphone.
anyone have a good recommendation on a new host provider so i can get free of these guys?
TIAhi scott. thanks a lot for the post here. /so/ glad to hear from someone that is also having this issue.
i was not aware that postbox was still alive. i purchased this software and found that there were functionalities that had controls in the UI which were not operable and that some of the tools were very buggy. then they closed the forums so you could not talk to other users and then eventually they stopped providing me support. in any event, i have been thinking about installing and going back to Thunderbird so do you mind if i ask you some follow ups here?
i have about ten email addresses which sort of complicates things i think as it is uber helpful to know where i am getting an email to. i mean, one of my email addresses is "[email protected]" (super important to me) while others are to other addresses. also, i have two domains so if i just send everything to one address this is a bit confusing.
/anyway/ i /tried/ setting an "[email protected]" and set up forwarding in the CPanel to this "all@" address. then i simply put this one "all@" domain in my email client. for some reason i think this created duplicates in some cases. do you happen to know if FORWARDING as you describe means it will show up in BOTH the forwarded email address and in the ORIGINAL account? i mean, presumably the fact that you have the GMAIL account on your iphone means that this email gets forwarded to this GMAIL address (in my case /all/ my email addresses could get forwarded to this GMail address) but it ALSO shows up in your email client when you enter your email addresses INDIVIDUALLY?
do you know what i mean? i mean it sounds like you are suggesting (again really helpful) that i get my email in bulk on my iphone with all of them forwarded to this GMail address but if i ditch Mail and set up a client that presumably limits processes that i can get the mail individually on my laptop and on my desktop, yes? -
ADDT Supported Coldfusion Hosting
ADDT system requirements state that cfexecute is required to be running on the server. I can't find any ISP's that offer cfexecute for 'security' reasons.
Can anyone tell me what features in ADDT utilize cfexecute? ...and can anyone recommend a good Coldfusion ISP to run ADDT enhanced web sites?
Thanks...Since it appears that I can't get an answer to my original question here, I turned off cfexecute on my server and began coding without it.
With cfexecute turned off, I've created pages with user login, user registration, data base insert, delete, update, session variables, and export as xml. They all worked fine from what I can see. I haven't tried file or image uploads yet, however. -
Web hosts recommendations please!
I am looking at the hosts I use and I am wondering if there is a better service available out there.
I currently use Fasthosts who I have to say are absolutely faultless in their service, especially tech support. I can have as many websites under my reseller account as I want... 100's if I choose, but, I can only have 5 databases! If I want to add another database, it going to cost £25 + VAT.
I'd like recommendations of service providers where I can be a reseller, they have excellent tech support, unlimited web sites AND databases.
TIA.
MatYes to all your questions. It has multiple sub-doamins and unlimited databases. I suggest contact them by phone oe email. everything is on their website and they operate 24/7 from Scotland so accent might be a problem but try them. Goos thing is UK laws apply so you are protected. you can start with the "Starter Pack" for £20 per year and you can switch after 3 months to pro and you get full credit for 9 months of unused subscription (about £15).

If i use coldfusion for flex to read/write [communicate] with
a MySQL database,
will be able to just upload to a normal webspace that also
supports SQL?
OR does coldfusion require special hosting? [also if so how
is this a good solution ? requiring an extra type of hosting for
just a cfm file when all it is is an unwanted medium between flex
and mysql]
thanksFlex is just another way to write flash apps and flash
doesn't talk to databases. You need something else to do that for
you. Cold Fusion is one option that's available, but not the only
one. -
Email host recommendations?
I know this probably isn't the most appropriate place to post this, but I thought this might be a good place to find other school IT folks working in Mac-based schools.
We have a server running OS X Server, basically for LDAP and file storage. We do not use the server to run our staff email because we can't provide the redundancy and reliability on campus that a professional host can. Recently, I've become dissatisfied with our host's ability to properly deliver mail. (We've had dozens lost to the ether in the last few weeks, and they have no explanation.)
I'm wondering if anyone here can recommend a host they've used for their school or small business, that has been reliable.
I'll appreciate any input, including directions to the proper forum to ask such a question!Commercial services might be a good solution but I would also reccomend looking at Apple's mail solution. An xserve can handle a significant email volume and - while not perfect, is a pretty darn good mail server. Support, care and feeding is then under your direct control and lets face it, there's always something going on that is specific to your organization that needs tweaking when it comes to mail. Start small (say a department or two, and see how it goes.
For secondary spooling, lets face it, ANY mail system will have down time, I would look at these services. I also always start with the ISP since they are closest to your main server and you are theoretically happy with them. Others may have other favorites.
DynDNS (www.dyndns.com): MailHop Backup MX, starting at $32.50/yr
MXSave (www.mxsave.com): MXSave, starting at $47.88/yr
DNS Made Easy (www.dnsmadeeasy.com): Backup Mail Service, starting at $12.95/yr

Managed dedicated hosting recommendations? Replication & failover?
Hello,
I'm looking for hosting company recommendations. Currently I have an internal department managing the website for me (primary & replicated failover Win2k3 webservers with CF9 Standard, SQL Server 2005 Standard primary and replicated failover at another location). We need to move this set up a managed dedicated location offsite. Our traffic is medium to high, but it's mostly page views without video or heavy imagery.
So my question is, do any hosting companies offer managed dedicated systems with replication as an option? Do they manage something like the F5 and uptime or would that be my responsibility? We just can't risk having the site go down without a backup location serving the same site, even with their 99.9999% uptime guarantees.
CrystalTech looks decent but I don't see that they offer replication? For sure, it is out there. But I can't really suggest anybody.
A company I once worked for used Rackspace. I think they where on a plan with them that had replication.
But I suspect all the big companies probably do this. But it might not be the type of informaiton they talk about up front on their web site.
Your the kind of user they expect to call them and talk about the requirments so they can get personal with you before they drop how expensive this type of service can be. -
UK/Europe ColdFusion Hosting?
Hi all,
A different slant on the common "can you recommend a CF
hosting company" question.
I'm looking for a good hosting company offering CF8 (MX7 at a
pinch) shared hosting and reseller accounts, preferably offering
white label support on the reseller account. I don't mind paying
for reliability and good service. Here's the rub: european data
protection laws require that all personal data must be held on
servers based in the EU or in a country with comparable data
protection (currently approved countries are Switzerland (surprise,
surprise), Canada, Guernsey and Argentina).
US companies are only OK if they are current members of the
Safe Harbor scheme and I've heard there are issues with UK sites
operating under a .com domain being hosted in the states, they rank
really badly in UK Google searches.
So far I have the following list of hosting providers to
check out, in no particular order:
Openmind Hosting (UK)
FlintHosts (UK)
CFMX Hosting (UK)
Yeti Host (UK or Canada)
Crystaltech (US)
HostmySite are not members of Safe Harbor so they're out.
I've also been *all* through Ben Fortas list wihtout luck, the list
is very out of date where Europe is concerned - no reflection on
Ben whatsoever because hosting companies are responsible for
maintaining their own entries.
Can anyone please recommend others which I should check out?
Thanks in advance.Hi Hydrowizard
Thank for the reply. I'd love to be able to look at Australia
- the home of FarCry - , there seems to be much more choice than in
the UK and the rest of Europe. Unfortunately I can't consider Oz
based hosting for any sites which store personal data - no client
mailing lists, project management, ecommerce (with user accounts),
etc. This is because the EU does not recognize Australia as having
sufficiently strong personal data protection and privacy laws.
I'm one of the (rare) Brits who are generally pro Europe but
for this situation I suspect it's a case of nightmare bureaucracy
from the EU rather than any inherent weakness in Oz law... -
Web Host -- Recommendations Anyone?
I'm looking for a place to host my web site. It's a small, simple site which currently has unsophisticated needs. What I'm mostly looking for is something cheap. Sometime in the future, I might need shopping cart, SSL, database, etc., but right now none of those are essential.
Since I'm a Mac user, a host that uses Mac servers would be great, but again, not essential.
I'd be interested in the recommendations of anyone using this forum.
Thanks.I used Bravenet for a little, they were ok.
I don't really like them becuase they had a lot of ads. Mostly becuase I didn't pay for the pro services (no pop-ups). -
I'm looking for a web host offering OS X hosting with QTSS/DSS. I've found (and used) several hosts that add DSS onto some other Unix variant, but I'm particularly interested in a Mac host to have access to Mac-specific (mostly command-line) features. My budget is up to $50/month. I need a reasonably large disk allowance (100GB), but not necessarily massive bandwidth (10GB/month).
Any recommendations?
Thanks! You might look at the HostExcellence.com Ultimate Business Package which, for $7.95/mo. offers 3 free domain names, unlimited storage and bandwidth, email addresses with aliases, Linux hosting and outstanding 24/7 ear-to-ear (telephone) customer support. It also has a basic package with 1 free domain name for $3.95/mo. If you have your own domain name you might go with it as you could publish all your sites to the one domain name account and point the existing domain names to them.
I moved my sites to it and am very happy with the decision to do so.

Client has old site build with ColdFusion.
Can I import this site into BC server?
Can I build a new site in Dreamweaver using the old files for content?Hi Will,
Have you not asked this question before in regards to PHP a little while ago?
Like with PHP or any server side coding - You can not install this on BC. IT is a SAAS - Software as as service and a closed system. You can not access the server side code.
It is also a .NET based system setup and server so other sources like PHP and Coldfusion will not run under this environment anyway.
In terms of using DW you can take the rendered pages from a ColdFusion site and certanly convert it into a BC site. I have done this before. Any extra work you need you can develop ColdFusion code that runs on your server and API's into your BC site if you need to as well.
Does that cover it for you, any other questions in regard to this? -
Web Hosting for Flash/ColdFusion/MySQL
I am new to Flash and interesting in creating simple
forms/guestbooks using flash. My web hosting service supports most
php & mysql technology. Most of the tutorial I see on the the
macromedia site refer to coldfusion.
Can anyone provide tips or articles relating
Flash/ColdFusion/MySQL on web hosts that do not support Access
& SQL server?
Can anyone recommed a host that supports
Flash/ColdFusion/MySQLThe host I use most often is CrystalTech.
http://www.crystaltech.com
They have ColdFusion hosting with MySQL, Flash. They are
reasonably priced and have very good customer service. (very
important in my opinion...)
