ColdFusion MX7 Hosting

Question

Hey Guys,
I have really focused on learning CFML of late as I really
like the Tag Based Syntax. It's been pretty easy to pick up and I
have loved the support that I receive on all of the forums.
However, I have had a couple of people ask me to do some coding for
them and I have noticed that many of my perspective clients already
have web hosting with companies that don't offer ColdFusion
support. Everyone does however offer PHP support. What do all of
you guys do when you run into this problem? I would hate to have to
switch over to PHP at this point because of this roadblock.

As a cf developer, you will need to learn php or some other
more popular
language. This problem is typical with cf as it is hard for
hosters to
purchase and install coldfusion - its too expensive for most
of them.
Yes, you can try asking all your clients to switch hosts, but
I suggest you
don't do this. Your cliest should not know or care what
technology is in
place. If you keep asking them to move they will want to know
why, and also,
howcome you are unable to work with the technologies
currently available to
them. Afterall, php can do all the same things as cf can. Why
should they
move??
CF is not ideal for general web developmetnt as it imposes
such restrictions
on which host you can use (there are relatively few hosting
compaies that
support it and they nearly always charge extra for it) CF is
used a lot more
in government where they can afford to pay for it and host
apps themselves.

PHP is more widely supported and you generally can find apps
and code freee
of charge, so it can be much more productive than cf. Asp.net
is another
good choice but it's not as easy to learn as php. CF is good
too - but you
certainly don't want to be in a situation where you can't
support your
clients or you have to put the pressure on them to move based
on your own
technology choices.
