Collapse multiple folders

Hi everyone!
I was wondering if anyone knows how to collapse multiple folders in the Files panel. Whenever I do a template update, it expands every folder containing a page that uses the template. So when you have 50-100 folders or so with several pages and/or subfolders inside each one, it makes it real pain to find a page or folder when every folder is expanded. And it's a real hassle to collapse each one separately, so I was just wondering if there's a way (or an extension) to collapse all the folders at once so I don't have to do each one at a time.
Alternatively, if there's a way to not expand every folder containing a page that uses a template when that template is updated, that would work, too.
Thanks!

Just in case anyone else has this issue, I figured out that you can hold Ctrl while clicking the collapse thingy and all the open folders in that folder will also close.

Is there a way to collapse /all/ folders in Finder instead of hunting them down and closing all of them one by one?
    Thanks.

I really still do not understand this question. Presumably you are not referring to List View (which is what I associate with collapse/expand). Icon View will open/close folders; List View will expand/collapse directory trees; Column View will scroll through path hierarchies; which one are you trying to do?
Do you mean you want to open multiple folders while in Icon View? If so, select the folders you want and hit ⌘+↓. All of them will open as long as they are all from the same Finder window. Afterwards, for you to close all Finder windows except one, you'd need to use one of the two AppleScripts I linked earlier.
Maybe you are asking for a method to double-click one folder and have it and all its subfolders open up in their own Finder windows (essentially, you want to open all nested folders with one click)? I think you'd need to build an AppleScript for that. The OS will not have such a function built in because the depth of some directory trees could easily freeze a computer.
i have a ton of documents and it is really inconvenient to have to open /all/ the folder to find things.
If you assigned non-generic names to your folders and documents, you should be able to use Spotlight and Smart Folders to get to your files. For example, since I name my project files with the format DateProject_DocumentVersion, it's easy for me to create a Smart Folder that shows me all finalized/approved parts lists from a project I did two years ago, regardless of where they're located in my archives. It's even easier if you also use Spotlight Comments and/or color labels.
then when i get them open it is a total pita going and collapsing all of them. i guess i can close out of the finder window altogether but i'd like to stay in the same window and keep working.
Did you try either one of the two AppleScripts I linked earlier? They allow you to close all Finder windows except the active one. Finder doesn't have a built-in, default option to close all windows except the active one.
btw, i'd also like to do the equivalent for windows on the desktop so i can get to the desktop quickly. right now I have to move them over or minimize them one by one...
i guess getting familiar with expose or witch may do this?
Exposé can temporarily displace (not hide) all windows to show just the Desktop. ⌥⌘H will hide all other applications except the active one (or if you wish to specify which particular application stays unhidden, ⌥⌘+click the app's icon on the Dock). To actually hide (not close) all visible windows, you'll need to run an AppleScript ➚.
also can i ask you if there is a way for me to post a video of screenshots to this site? i have an issue that would be helped by doing this...
You'd need to upload to a video host, like YouTube, and then paste the link over here.

  • Shortcut to close multiple folders in List View

In the Finder, in list view, I have multiple folders open (using the triangle by the Folder name). I'd like to be able to close all the open folders at once. I know that holding Option while clicking the red Close button on a window will close multiple windows and I want to do something similar with the folders.
I'm sure I knew how to do this once but can't remember now.
    Thanks,
    Steve

Command-click or otherwise select all of them, and then push the left arrow key.

when I put a MP3 cd in my car stereo, it asks me which folder do you want to play? This leads me to believe that I can put multiple folders on one cd, and I was wondering the logistics of this. • Can I export multiple folders at the same time, keeping the album structure

I'm exporting all of my photos from 2010 so far. Is there a way to export multiple folders at the same time, while keeping the existing album structure? It seems that when I try it, iPhoto exports them all to the same folder.
I really don't want to do this one album at a time, and here's why -
I'd like to select all of the albums, then export, using the plugin, to WalMart so that I can order prints.

    Check out [iPhotoToDisk|http://www.iphototodisk.com/index.html]
I'd like to select all of the albums, then export, using the plugin, to WalMart so that I can order prints.
Why not upload to Walmart from iPhoto? Check out the first option here:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Would like to be able to select and move multiple folders in one operation.

Unless I'm missing something really simple here, there doesn't seem to be any easy way of selecting and moving multiple folders at once.
Here's a little example of a simple task I want to do. I presently have a multitude of folders each seperated by the day the photo was taken on. So in my case for a given year I might have maybe 50 folders or so. It's getting a little cluttered, so all I want to be able to do is to take all the folders for one given year and place them in a folder with that year's date. This should be a simple 30 second task, simply select the folders I want moved by either <CTRL> or <SHIFT> clicking them, and then dragging and dropping them into the new folder.
Right now, the only way I've figured how to do this this is to drag and drop each folder one by one, never mind that this is a slow process in itself, but to add to the slowness, whenever I try to drag and drop more than one folder consecutively, I get a message saying ... "Can not move a folder while another move operation is in progress...blah blah". Not that I want this to be the fix, but haven't they heard of queuing?
I've seen people on the net suggest that for this type of task, you should simply move the folders in Windows first and then locate them in Lightroom. Again, unless I'm missing something very simple here, there doesn't seem to be a way to locate multiple missing folders at once. If I have to manually locate each missing folder one by one, then I'd rather just do the drag and drop thing as this would actually be faster.
I've also tried moving the folders from within Windows first and then using the "Synchronize folder" option, yeah sure this works, but I lose any changes that I've done in Develop module. Not what I'm looking for.

Daniel is right. It´s really strange that I can´t move several folders in one move! When I need more space on my laptop I move a group of folders (one folder for every photosession) to an archive. Therefore I really would like to move them in one click, not "baby-sitting" the move of each folder.

  • Save same bookmark in multiple folders without having to do it manually. Is there and add-on that can help me fix this issue?

If I have a bookmark in a folder and I save a new folder that may overlap with the old bookmarks the bookmarks from the old folder are automatically removed, this is a problem for me and I cant always manually go fix it.
    If I have a folder named A1-D1 that has bookmarks A1, B1, C1 & D1
    & now I am searching bookmarks related to A & want a new folder A1-A4 with bookmarks A1, A2, A3 & A4
when I save the new group of bookmarks it removes A1 from A1-D1, which is horrible.
& its very time consuming & frustrating to have to manually fix this every time.
I know Firefox did this on purpose to prevent duplicate bookmarking but this is worse than having the the same bookmark being repeated more than it needs to. Now when I am looking at folder A1-D1 i don't even know how many of them have disappeared & have to search all over again.
I hope they fix it soon.
Please let me know if there is an add-on that will prevent Firefox form ruining my bookmarks.

This extension gets around that limitation for me. <br />
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/add-bookmark-here-2/
Really nothing to be fixed, that "feature" was added to Firefox 3 when the "Tags" feature was added to Firefox bookmarks. The concept is to use Tags to categorize a single bookmark with multiple Tags, instead of the user saving the same bookmark to multiple folders. I don't care for Tags and save the same bookmark to whatever folders I want it in using that extension.

I want the folders I already backed up to come together into one folder when that year is over. Is there a way to manually do that or automatic through TM?
I'm quite sure there is no "automatic" way to do this. I've never heard of anyone trying it either. I suppose if you wanted try it, you could simply create a new folder in the same partition TM is on, label it for that year, then gather all the days for that year and drag/drop them into the folder. I suspect (but do not know) you'd be risking the continuity of your backups, meaning TM would simply start over again, meaning that next back up would start a new series of backups, with the first one roughly equalling the entire capacity of your internal HD, instead of adding only the new data to the previous backup. Once again, I would recommend against it, unless you're fine with TM starting a new series of backups if it doesn't work out the way you want it to. Hope you'll post back with results so we can learn from it.

  • Bridge CS6 Script to Find Multiple Images in Multiple folders.

Is it possible to have a script to find multiple images within multiple folders that is on a external hard drive?
For instances I have a external hard drive assuming it's for a library of pictures.
Inside this hard drive has folders named as below
    1-1000
    1001-2000
    2001-3000
    3001-4000
If I had a perfect csv file for example that calls out for specific pictures for example 2, 10,1500 and 2000 (remember think big, it may be a larger list than this it could be hundreds or thousands of pictures); is there a script that would allow me to find these images and save a copy of them on to my desktop so that way I don't have to hunt for them in the old fashion way? I can read scripts but writing them is a different story.

If you want to go with Batch I would recommend creating an Action of more or less these steps:
    • set the resolution to the same as the background image’s
    • change the image from Background Layer to regular Layer if necessary
    • convert it to a Smart Object
    • add a Drop Shadow Layer Style to the image (do not use Global Angle)
    • place the background image (File > Place …)
    • move it behind the image layer
    • Image > Reveal All
    • make Selection from that layer’s transparency (cmd-click its icon in the Layers Panel) and use Image > Crop
    • select and transform the image layer to fit the intended position
This would naturally work out best if the images had the same size and proportions.
For the reflection on the floor duplicate the image, flip it vertically, move it in position and reduce its opacity to maybe 10%.
Realistically you may have to hide it partially behind the pillows, a Vector Mask would be an option.

  • Please add the ability to add multiple folders to the assets folder in order to better organize large numbers of files.

Please add the ability to add multiple folders to the assets folder in order to better organize large numbers of files.

    Hello KDLadage
Thank you for your recommendation. I understand the challenges of managing large numbers of files on the My Files page. I also understand the need to preserve project files.
Perhaps a compromise would be to create an Archive tab under My Files. Previous versions and retired project files could then be automatically moved into this holding area when a new version is published, thus preserving the files in a separate area that is still accessible to the author.
I will submit this suggestion to our product management team to consider as a future enhancement.
