Collapse photos into events

In iPhoto '11 (9.2.1) when I had the Photo slected on the left bar, the photos were collapsed to groupings (note : this is not in the Events pane).
I could expand or collapse a group into thumbnails and easily move photos between groups. However, some one clicked on someting and now all 4000 photos are displayed individually by thumbnails. There are no longer any groups to collapse.
How do I return Photos to the orignal groupings?
Also, when I am in the Events pane, how do I transfer a single photo from one Event to another.
Clickiing on the Event expands it alone - dragging the Event merges the entire events.
(this used to be easy in iPhoto '09) Stop making progrqams less user freindly!

Your welcome - however that is it...
Following step 1 shows 4000 thumbnail pictures with titles.
That's  because  you've gone View Menu -> Titles, whereas I suggest going View Menu  -> Event Titles (It's 4 from the top.)
n the Events pane, Selecting the target event is possible - but that deselects the original ...
It doesn't matter that it deselects the original, because you've flagged the Original
...and there is no Move option under the Events pull down menu.
There is on mine:
Add Flagged Photos to Selected Event
It's 5 from the top in the Events Menu.

  • I have iPhoto 11, and whenever I upload photos, it does not automatically split the photos into events.

This causes my photos to not show up in my events. I have to click "Show Event" myself. How do I set it to automatically put the photos into events? Also, once I DO get the pictures into events, then appear at the top, so I have to drag it all the way to the bottom of the events. How do I also set it to put the newest events at the bottom? Sorry if this is confusing....

All photo imported into iPhoto automatically go into a new event.  If the photos are coming from a folder on your hard drive or other drive the Event name will be then same as the folder name.  Otherwise the event will be titled Untitled Event.
The location of the new event within the other events will be determined by the EXIF dates of the photos being imported and how you have event sorting setup in iPhoto (View ➙ Sort Photos menu option).

  • Can I drag and drop single photos into Events?

Hi guys. I've very recently ordered a new Mac that will have iLife 08 on it. Before I get started with it I've got a question about Events. I've been using iPhoto for the last several years, organizing my photos into albums. I've cleaned up my images to around 1,000 photos, and I plan to only use events for organization. (I don't want to use Events AND albums, don't see the point, I'm going to try using ONLY Events.) But I've got a few scenerios that I'd like to throw by you all, to see if they would work, as I'm hoping that they will...
I don't shoot photos into pre-defined "Events", I shoot photos by what I feel like shooting. "Hey, my dog is doing something funny" - There's 3 pictures, or "Wow that's a big spider!" - 1 picture, or "My little neice is doing something cute" - There's 4 pictures. I do not want 450 events, each containing 1 - 5 pictures.
Can I drag and drop single pictures into different events? For example, have an Event called "Friends" with pictures of my friends in it, that I put there? Or an event called "Concerts" with photos taken throughout the years?
I hope I've made it clear what I'm looking to get out of Events!
Thanks in advance for any help.

Exactly - I think he will want to matain his existing structure -- people are making too much of the name change from rolls to events.
I have events with one photo and events with as many as 2000 photos -- I like this better than rolls but albums, folders and keywords are still the key to granular organization - events are ust the library to hold my photos
To me it is a small step forward that makes organization much easier (and it was not that hard before)

  • How do I organize my photos into events and then move from my mac to my Ipad

New to mac.  Have moved 3000 pictures to Iphoto.  How do I organize into events and then download those events to my ipad?

Have a look at the tutorials here
    http://www.apple.com/findouthow/photos/
Essentailly, your photos are broken into Events automtically. You sync with your iPad via iTunes.

  • Iphoto splitting photos into separate events

IPhoto used to have a selection to turn off autosplitting photos into events when importing.  That option is gone.  The best I can find not is to autosplit items into one event per week.  Is there a way to do this (i.e. through the terminal) or is there a third-party option?
    thanks!

After looking around on the discussions I guess you're right about it not being an option, but I can tell you that I routinely import photos from our camera spanning multiple days (weeks even) without iPhoto autosplitting them into separate events.  The autosplitting just cropped up today, and whether the older behavior was due to a corrupted preferences file or some other glitch, I want it back.  I appreciate your orgainizational advice, but I simply do not care to work that way - I much preferred the old iPhoto 'camera roll' analogy and hate when iPhoto second-guesses me about how to organize my photos.  Is there a way to force iPhoto to stop autosplitting?
    Thanks!

  • Uploading my photos into iPhoto from an external hard drive

I have all my old digital photos (approx 17GB) on an external hard drive. I would like to upload them in to iPhoto on my iMac (OS X 10.6.8)
    Some questions:
How can I stop any duplicate photos being uploaded into iPhoto (I already have small number of the old photos in iPhoto)
How do I upload the photos into 'Events'? What is the difference between Events and Albums?
Do I need to rename the albums on the hard drive before I upload them with new album names?
How can I delete duplicate photos I already have in iPhoto?
and lastly the iMac is set up with 4 users accounts on it - how do I share (in iPhoto) all these newly uploaded photos with the other users
So many questions, but If I do it right now it will save me hrs of work sorting all the photos out and renaming them all when they are in iPhoto

and lastly the iMac is set up with 4 users accounts on it - how do I share (in iPhoto) all these newly uploaded photos with the other users
For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
    What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

  • I prefer to arrange my photos by title but when I shut down Iphoto, my photos rearrange by date.  This is not acceptable for my growing library of snanned black and white ancestral photos. How do I get photos in events to stay in place ?

I prefer to arrange my photos by title but when I shut down Iphoto, my photos rearrange by date.  This is not acceptable for my growing library of snanned black and white ancestral photos. How do I get photos in events to stay in place ?

I actually am illiterate on the use of the finder to to view photos in folders.  I guess I will go to a class at the local Apple store for a lesson on the uses of finder .
My method of viewing my photos are through events in I photo.
    1. Download  from camera or scan  in from old photos.
2  I organize photos into events by occasion, or happenings in a certain year, or a group of photos with memorabilia of a certain person from childhood and on. etc.
    3.  Because Iphoto does not allow rearranging as I was able to do in my old PC with Corell,  I drag all of the photos to an " album" on the left side of sceen.
    4.  I arrange photos in "order" after which I number each photo in sequence. I do this for a few of reasons.
              - if a photo is accidentally deleted I know it.  I can usually remedy this by checking my trash or
    rescanning.
              - I can sort by title without complications and this holds in "album"
    5.  The pictures will re arrange automatially to match the album in I photo.
    6.  This worked great in I-photo 09 but now in mountain lion the pictures in events go back to "
sort by date" and will not hold "sort to Title"each time I photo is closed down.  What a nuicance it is to have to go  to view and click "title"  again and again every time Iphoto is opened.
    7. Can I go back to Photo 09? .

  • Cannot place photos in events anymore

I don't have that many photos or events (7,000, ok, a lot) but I now have discovered that I cannot place photos into events anymore, and I cannot create new events. Previously I had photos organized into both events (by country) and into photo albums (by occasion). Now I can no longer add/combine photos into events (after the upgrade to Photos). So my Japan photos can't be placed into my old Japan (event), only into my photo albums (for occasion). This really is irritating. I hope there is a way to fix it. Of course Herblock's Law seems to be Apple's new motto: If it's good, they'll stop making it.
I hope there is a fix soon.

I agree. Kind of ***** that Apple would remove that. I am still using iPhoto for now, since the upgrade did not remove it. I will be forced to look for alternatives as well. I'll add whatever I find to my current list for Apple fixes:
TotalFinder to fix annoying wide tabs in Finder windows.
TotalSpaces to bring back the old Expose.
Ejector to allow me to actually eject drives without being annoyed by pop-up windows. It's like Regis lives in my Mac. ARE YOU SURE???
Dropbox because iCloud is being blocked by my proxy at work.
Tuxera NTFS because NTFS is not supported on the Mac.
Hosts because it is easier to perform brain surgery on a cockroach than navigate the Terminal to make hosts file entries.
calibre because iBooks only provides one type of view. calibre provides a nice list view, easier to navigate than squinting, trying to read book covers when you have 300+ epubs.
cdock so I can get my 3D dock back.
1Password because there is no easy way to edit/change entries for passwords in Keychain Access. Oh, and 1Password also stores software licenses. Oh, and 1Password also works with Dropbox (see above).
Parallels Desktop and VMware Fusion because they still support Windows OSs that Boot Camp won't.
OpenOffice because Pages, Numbers, and Keynote are....well, they are what they are.
And I miss Glims. Used to get rid of those annoying wide tabs in Safari, not anymore. Oh wait...now I use Firefox.
I also wish someone would develop a plugin for Safari that would bring the Snow Leopard RSS reader back, not the eye-squint that exists now.

  • Really stupid that you can't drag and drop photos from Finder into Events

There is no way in iPhoto to do what I want and need to to, to wit, drag and drop photos from the Finder into existing iPhoto Events.
It really doesn't make sense that you can't do this. First of all, calling these groups Events to begin with is not smart; in my case, a group of photos in a folder on the Finder is rarely all from one photo session or so-called "event"--- instead of Events they should just be called Groups or something, and you should be able to drop individual photos into them. I have thousands of family photos that were accumulated on my hard drives over the years, some scanned in from film negatives, slides, or prints, others from digital cameras, and when I have changed Macs and hard drives over the years, every time a folder of photos was moved from an old hard drive to a new one, or regrouped into various folders, the photos seem to have acquired new dates of origin, etc.
Anyway, what I mean is, if Events are all time based, then somebody like me who has thousands of photos with all sorts of dates of origin, mostly unrelated to the date that the photo was actually shot, is screwed. I have old photos with new dates of origin and other mismatches between photos and the dates when they were actually shot or scanned.
My gripe is, again, that when I find photos on my hard drives that belong in certain iPhoto Events that have already been created, I cannot just drag these photos from the Finder and drop them into the Events they belong in. Instead, the stupid program creates a new Event from each photo I try to drop into an existing Event. That means I have to chase these new photos all over the place inside of iPhoto, trying to figure out where each new photo (now called an "Event") has ended up, so that I can drag and merge it into the Event I wanted it to go into in the first place. A real pain in the neck. It simply takes too long to do this for each photo added.
What this means is that iPhoto is not going to be a practical way to organize for a person like me until Apple makes it possible to simply drop any photo from the Finder into an existing Event. There should be an option to allow that. I'm really surprised there is not one. <edited out by Hosts>
    Tom

Tom, iPhoto will not overwrite photos with the same name. I have plenty of photos with the same name in the same event. Each photo most likely has an internal handler that manages the photo, and not just the name of the file.
I agree with you that this is sub-optimal, and (IMO) I think what happened is iPhoto 6 had rolls, and they came up with a really cool interface for mousing over those rolls, and decided it was more consumer friendly (and because film is a thing of the past) to call them events, rather than rolls. I think it was worth a shot, but they just slightly missed.
Right now in iPhoto08, any serious organization is done in folders and albums. Personally, I think they need to combine the two concepts -- the great "mouse over" view of events with the organization abilities of folders and albums. I'd like an albums view where I can mouse over the albums. Actually, Aperture 2's interface for organization is more functional than iPhoto, so I am hoping some of that benefit creeps into the next iPhoto release.
What I do is: I use events for high level grouping (like Winter 2007) and I organize folders and albums to break that down further ("trip to Montreal" "Christmas" etc.). But I do it backwards. I fill albums first, then I organize events.
When I drag in pictures to iPhoto, first I make the target album in iPhoto that I want to populate, then I drag the photo directly to that album (not to events). iPhoto automatically puts the photo into the album I created and also into a new event. Later, I go into events, right-click on this new event to "open event in separate window" then I move around the events view, to drop in the pictures from the "import" event I just created. If I move all the pictures into other events, iPhoto automatically deletes the event I just emptied. You could skip the event organization all together if you wanted to, but you'd lose the cool mouse-over feature, which can be handy.
One nice thing about having events AND albums is you can have the photo just once in iPhoto, in an event, but then have the photo appear in as many albums as you want (as well as projects and web galleries) all while only having one photo on your hard drive. So, there are benefits to events, but I think iPhoto is missing just a couple little bits of organizational ability to make it perfect. (and yes, I've submitted this all to Apple as feature requests)
Just in case you don't know -- events don't have any hierarchy. That is, you can't nest events. But you can have folders with subfolders, and any folder can contain albums. Albums cannot have sub-albums, and folders don't hold photos. Only albums hold photos, and folders (or sub-folders) hold albums. Try create some folders and albums and you'll get the hang of it. One other issue that Apple needs to address. When you create a new folder or album, it doesn't put it right where you want it, but rather puts it at the bottom of the list, so you have to drag it up to where you want it. Try it out, and you'll see what I mean, then submit it as a feature request to improve that.
I agree it's not perfect, but it's not too bad once you get used to it. And the benefits of working with the rest of the features of iPhoto is worth it. I'm just really hoping they do a few tweaks on the next release. They are near greatness here. They could just use a little nudge on the last bits. (in my opinion of course. Others may disagree, but I've talked to enough people who have the same issues you are having to know we are not alone on this).

I am having major trouble trying to get photos into IPhoto.  On my old macbook, I just had to hit the IPhoto button - I have hundreds of photos and events but now I have this MacPro when I hit the Iphoto button the photos just "disappear" into a document file on the dock and the photos are all contained in some kind of arcs....I'm not computer literate and spent 2 years in one on one just learning IPhoto  Could some one out there please help me.?

What version of iPhoto are you using?  Where are the photos coming from that go into the document on the Dock?  What iPhoto button are you referring to?

  • Stills Resolution - Photo Browser vs. Importing into Event

    All,
I am preparing a slideshow with photos of varying size.  I manage my photos in Aperture and usually use the photo browser in Final Cut Pro X to access them. Some of the photos are low-res (0.1 MB 286 x 369 pixels, for example).  If I bring the example photo into my project via the photo browser, the resolution is cut in half (143 x 184).  If I import the photo into the Event Browser and add it to the slideshow the original resolution is preserved.  Its obviously an easier workflow to use the photo browser but many of the photos I am working with are of poor quality to begin with so I don't want to have to first export from Aperture then import into FCPX.  Does anyone know why I am seeing this behavior?
    Thanks very much,

    You're probably transcoding to Proxy.
This halves the size of the imported media.
    Andy
That's what I thought at first, but that is not what I see in my machine.
I set the playback to proxy media, and in the Proxy Media folder I get an alias to the original file (sitting in the Original Media folder, naturally), so even using proxy does not halve the dimensions of the still image.

  • When I import photos from Photostream into my iPhoto, it no longer organizes them into Events. I haven't been able to creat an Event since November 2013.

When I import photos from Photostream, iPhoto no longer organizes them into Events. Although I can organize my photos into old or newly created Albums, I haven't been able to create an Event since November 2013. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Flag the pic(s) and select the the Target Event and go Events -> Add Flagged Pics to Selected Event
i see how to do this
Drag the selected pic(s) to the target Event.
i'm struggling with this. i don't see a way to drag a pic from photostream direct to an event. if i'm in photostream, i can drag a pic, but i can't see any individual event to drag it to. i can dump it in Events in the sidebar and drag to an event from there, but that's a bit clunky.
beats me why i can copy a pic in photostream, but iphoto won't allow me to paste in an event???

  • Drag and drop photos into an event?

Is it possible to drag a photo from the finder into a specific iPhoto event?
In my head it makes sense that if you have an event open in iPhoto you should be able to drop new photos into, rather than what currently seems to happen where they are treated as a new event and a new one is created, meaning I then have to navigate to the events and drag the new onto the old to merge them.

Is it possible to drag a photo from the finder into a specific iPhoto event?
    No
Events are designed to be time based so adding to an event does not really fit well -- You might consider leaving them time based and doing your organization with key words and/or albums/folders
To keep your work flow and ease the event merge procedure if in preferences you un-check "autosplit into events" under the events section you can build a set of folders on the desktop like "new import - event A", "new import event B" etc and drag them to iPhoto - new events will be created with the folder names and you can then easily drag the imported folders onto the target folders to merge them
    Good Luck

  • How do I merge new imported photos into an existing event?

How do I merge new imported photos into an existing event while using the latest version of iPhoto?

You can merge two Events simply by dragging one to the other.
You can move photos between Events by drag and drop or by first flagging them, then switching to Events View and selecting the target Event and going Events Menu -> Add Flagged Photos to selected Event.

  • Can I import a photo into a specific event folder?

When I import a photo into iPhoto 11 it goes into the latest import folder.
Then I have to drag these photos all over the event screen to get them into the folder I want
Is there a way to get iPhoto to import into a specific event folder?
Sorry if this is basic but I don't know the answer
    TIA
    Mark

    Greetings Mark,
When you import photos into iPhoto they go into Events on the left hand side.  They also temporarily show up in the Last Import section but this changes each time you do an import.
Events are created based on when you import the images.  You cannot control which event the images go into as this process is handled by iPhoto in the background.  You can move images from one event to another if you like once the import is complete.
If you use Albums (type in the word Albums in the help menu for more details) you could drag images from the desktop directly into an Album and that image will be added.
You might find this help menu video on Events useful: http://support.apple.com/kb/VI187
    Hope that helps.
