Collect core dumps in a Linux vmware
Hi,
we have a Linux installed using VMware, and are using this for teaching.
Unfortunately collect core dumps on every executable, on some installtions.
We tried studio 12 and express and different Linux distributions.
Scientific Linux 5.1 and Ubuntu 8.0.4 both don't work however OpenSuse10.3 works.
The curious thing is collect works fine on Scientific Linux and Ubuntu 8.0.4 if not installed in a VMware.
I can provide an example VMware image if that is of interest.
Did anyone encounter similar problems or has a solution for this?
(we would like to use Ubuntu or Scientific Linux)
best regards,
Samuel
VMWare is not a supported platform for Sun Studio Performance Tools, at least
not yet. We are planning to add support sometime soon, but it's not there yet.
Can you send me more information about the failure? We currently
do not even have a test environment with VMWare.
Thanks,

Hello all,
how to collect core dump on Solaris 10.
Thanks alotModerator advice: Don't double post. The other thread you started in the Servers General Discussion forum with the identically same question has been removed.
The only response on that thread is reproduced below.

Hi Vutha,
Are you looking for instructions on collecting a core file, created by a failing userland process, or do you want to collect kernel crashdump files ?
You can look at the output of the coreadm command to find out what file is stored in which location.
What to collect is nicely described in [url https://supporthtml.oracle.com/ep/faces/secure/km/DocumentDisplay.jspx?id=1010911.1]What to send to Oracle Sun after a system panic and/or unexpected reboot (Doc ID 1010911.1).
Did you know we have two community categories in My Oracle Support, where you also can post your questions ? Have a look at [url https://communities.oracle.com/portal/server.pt/community/sun_sparc_enterprise_servers/447]Sun SPARC Enterprise Servers and [url https://communities.oracle.com/portal/server.pt/community/oracle_sun_technologies/388] Oracle Sun Technologies .
Hope this helps,

ST22 core dumps in a Linux 64bit environment
Hello,
I am running a combination ECC5.0/Oracle 9.2.07 on a Linux 4.0 64bit version. My CI and database are distributed. Since go live we have been experiencing core dumps that have been occuring every 2-3 weeks. So far we have analyzed that when this occurs the pxa buffer is being overwritten. It will start out as a number of 10 dumps and then becomes a monster where the coredumps are generated faster than I can remove them on the UNIX level. The only quick solution is to restart the app server. SAP has come back with a kernel upgrade but I am hesitant as that was the fix recommended when this first started to happen. I applied the upgrade but the coredumps arrive as scheduled. Does anyone else out there have the same combination that I have and if you do, are you experiencing these coredumps from hell?
Does anyone else experience this on an HPUX or Solaris environment?
Any and all input will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Gary ManaoatHi ,
Send the short-dump extract so that it is possible to analyze the problem by all of the fellow SDN members.
Anyways from the info in message I think its related to PXA related problem for abap/buffer_size parameter in the instance profile.
Review the parameter.
Kind Regards
Neenad

Hotspot core dumping during JVM garbage collection ?
We have an application which calls a 3rd party supplied server API which has recently been upgraded to use Java 1.5
We are getting the following error reported by our client application. The application is also now running Java 1.5 but references many classes in jar files which would have quite old code in.
The supplier of the API has stated that the problem requires us to recompile all our jar files using v 1.5 ( including things like jconnect and jms ?!?!? ). This sounds like a bit of a cop-out to me, not to mention being impossible since we don't have the source for things like jconnect.
I suspect that there is a garbage collection problem at the bottom of all this, but I'm not sure how I can "prove" this, nor do I currently have any real clue as to how to fix any GC problem that may exist.
The application is supposed to wait for a message on a MQSeries queue and then transforms it via Xalan XSLT and sends it to a Server application. I've tried playing around with heap sizes etc but that just seems to make it worse. If I leave it at the settings that the previous version used then the client at least manages to process a couple of messages before core dumping. There doesn't seem to be a consistent trigger event to cause the core dump ( it's not a message arriving on a queue for example ) but it does seem to be fairly consistent timewise, i.e. after
Any ideas gratefully accepted.

nullThanks for your input. But having investiagted further I have made progress.
On one of the FAQ docs listed throughout the Linux Forum I found an example of what should be in the pcscfg.cfg file. Once this was in place I then had, /usr/bin/ld cannot find -laio (or the file /usr/lib/libaio.a). To get a clean(ish) compile, I created a symbolic link from libc.a to libaio.a which is crude but was effective. I had a working Pro C exe.
I understand that the second patch solves the libaio.a prob as well as others. But a colleague has installed it and had to regress it, due to more damaging problems he listed but I cannot recall at this time.
Thanks again. -
Today was the first time I have tried running a Java app from a script file within Red Hat Linux 6.2. I am using the 1.3.1 SDK SE. Before now, all classes were run in the JVM created by my servlet engine (Apache Tomcat). Now that I have an application to start and run in it's own JVM, I get an immediate core dump. Everything works fine in Windows using JBuilder. Copied the class files to Linux, created a shell script that sets the JAVA_HOME PATH and CLASSPATH correctly based on the one JBuilder uses. Call java and specify my class name. Immediate core dump. I have even tried to run it as root. What should I check? Is there a way to see what error it is running into? I am kind of stumped since there is no error on the screen and I wouldn't know what to do with a core file.
To simplify matters, I have created a test class that all it does is System.out.println. I still get a core dump. Here is the shell file I use to run it.
#!/bin/sh
JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/jdk1.3.1
PATH=.:$PATH:$JAVA_HOME/bin

I see yere points but what I see on linux is it makes it to the constructor of the Java object and somewhere afterwards it bails out, the Java app does work alone. It appears to have problems initializing the JFrame, could there be a problem with the Java inheritance when a JVM is invoked throurgh native invocation??

hi,
The OCI method, OCISessionBegin() is throwing an core dump on 10g client in Linux on C++, but the same code works fine for 8i and 9i client. I would like to know is there any problem with Oracle Client v10.2.0.2? or how does i can solve the issue? appriciate a quick help in this regard.
Thanks,
SreeniHave you looked in the Knowledge Base information at metalink? That would be the place to start.
If that does not work then the next step would be to remove this thread and post in the OCI - OCCI forum where there are people that can actually help you. -
Ini_ReadFromFile dumps core in CVI for Linux
Hello all,
I've been using the toolbox/inifile.h library for 3 years on CVI for Linux
with few problems. And suddenly it won't load my ini file.
It runs fine on Windows, I haven't updated the Linux CVI compiler (version
10, patched), I haven't done any relevant changes to my code.
IniText hInitFile;
char InitPath="config.ini" ;
hInitFile = Ini_New(0);
if (hInitFile==NULL) return 1;
Ini_ReadFromFile (hInitFile, IniPath)
Crashes here with core dump:
(gdb) bt
#0 0x00263a4c in memcpy () from /lib/libc.so.6
#1 0x08082e57 in Ini_ReadGeneric ()
#2 0x00000000 in ?? ()
Since it happens in a compiled lib, I can't do much more.
Guillaume Dargaud
http://www.gdargaud.net/Solved shortly after posting the above...
There was a wrong entry in the ini file "=0.4" and it caused the crash...

No, we dont Use any JNI in this app.
It seems the Core dump was caused by a GC scheduled by JROCKIT
looking at the stack trace.A SIGSEGV represents a pointer error.
The SIGSEGV indicates an error that occurs when the OS sees that the application is doing something that it should not.
That however does not mean that bug originates only at that point. A pointer error can corrupt memory in such a way that the application can run for some time before it does something the OS does not care for. But it can also occur at the exact spot.
Causes for such errors.
- JNI, as already mentioned.
- Some other application on the system corrupting the VM space. Such as monitoring tools or debugging tools. Unlikely but possible.
- Hardware failures and/or OS problems. Again unlikely.
- A bug in the VM. -

Core dump installing 8.1.7 on RH 6.2
The installation process fails trying to link the oracle executable (core dump). Have anybody suffered the same problem? any walkaround? 8.1.6 is running without problems in the same box.
Thanks,

I have just installed 8.1.5 on RH6.2 over the last weekend and it works quite beautifully. Untar the jre bundle into /usr/local and make a softlink to /usr/local/jre.
Next, cd to to /mount_point/install/linux and run ./runInst.sh from there. Running runInstaller will not work.
Hope that helps. -
Inetd service/program crashes with core dump in Solaris 8 zone/container
I have developed a service in C that is launched from inetd when something comes on a specific port.
When a connection is opened to the port a core dump is created in the same directory where the executable file is located.
If you run the same service program from the command line everything is working perfect.
This is running in a Solaris 8 zone/container on a Solaris 10 machine.
Everything is set correctly in /etc/inetd.conf and in /etc/services.
I have even stripped down the program to a hello world program that is just printing a string to the screen and it is still crashing with a core dump.
# ldd test_srv
/usr/lib/secure/s8_preload.so.1
libc.so.1 => /usr/lib/libc.so.1
libdl.so.1 => /usr/lib/libdl.so.1
/usr/platform/SUNW,Sun-Fire-480R/lib/libc_psr.so.1
The same service is running on a Linux machine and on a Solaris 10 machine without zones/containers without any problems.
Can you please help me figure out what am I missing. Is there something specific with zones/containers that should be set / configured?
Do I have to set some specific env. variables to work in a Solaris 8 zone/container environment or is it something very simple that I'm missing?Could you please examine the truss log and advice what the problem is and how to fix it?

Investigation on JVM crash without core dump (by JIT compiler)
Hi, All
I posted "JVM crash without core dump due to CompilerThread1" couple months ago.
http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5253434
I would like show what we found, and ask couple questions
1) The reason of JVM crash is "CompilerThread0/1 wanted to allocate more native memory and eventually exceeded the limit of 32-bit Linux (on Redhat, the limit of VIRT is 3G)
2) After we lower the heap size (to reduce process size) and added process size monitor (track process size every minute) and JIT compilation log (-XX:+PrintCompilation),
We found sometimes JVM process jumped more than 800M when compiling one method. with the following log
Total time for which application threads were stopped: 0.1997400 seconds
5828 xxx.xxx.SomeClass::someMethod (1507 bytes)
5828 COMPILE SKIPPED: out of nodes during split (not retryable)
549002.449: [GC [PSYoungGen: 517897K->28390K(551296K)] 942855K->453348K(1229952K), 0.0726350 secs]
if we saw "COMPILE SKIPPED: out of nodes during split (not retryable)", the process size of JVM (VIRT/RES) always jumped 800M~1000M, and sometimes the memory get reverted in 30mins to couple hours, and sometimes it lasted forever. (so before we have larger footprint, this jump will kill JVM, right now, if the jump lasts forever, any more allocation on top of it also can kill jvm (much rare))
3) This is definitely a bug of JVM, because
it only happened on server mode, not client mode
it is random, that method can be compiled success on other JVM or next restart (we have 20 JVMs)
the method is not that complicate, like 100 lines, (bigger method gets compiled success)
this only happen on PROD environment, we can't reproduce it locally or QA (the method is always compiled success)
It mostly like under some condition (maybe node space is not enough), to compile that method will trigger JVM trying to allocate much more native memory.
4) We are going to disable this method by ".hotspot_compiler" to fix it, right now we are using lower footprint, JVM dies rarely.
+To understand more about this, I have some questions about JIT compiling+
I saw same method are compiled more than once from JIT log, like the method caused our problem, it only happens on 2nd time compilation.
Is it that JIT compiler will recompile the method with deeper optimization level some time, and more optimization it uses, the more memory it requires?
(like gcc has -O2 -O3)
Thanks!
NeoToday, one JVM crashed again, with
