Collection set into slideshow
Hello,
I have created a collection set in Lightroom 5, and under this set there are 5 collections. I would like to make a slide show of this collection set, and I would like my slide show go in sequence with collection 1 through 5. Each collection has still and video images and I would like to put a text messages in the beginning of each collection segment.
I searched the web, look into few books that I have and I did not see anything dealing on how to make a slide show out of a collection set.
I do appreciate your help.
Thank you so much.

HI,
This is not possible with LR. To have a separator between you collections you must import a "photo" with the text and set it as first image in your collection. Than you can select multiple collections for your slideshow.

Can I convert a collection into a collection set
Hi,
Is it possible to convert a collection into a collection set. I have two scenarios I am trying to deal with right now.
1. I have two separate collections. I would like to move one collection into another, such that collection A contains what was in collection A plus the collection B i move into it?
2. I have photos I want to make into a collection and place into another collection. The dialog box only allows you to select current collection sets.
To do this do I really need to basically start over and create a new collection set and new collections in order to move them into the collection set?
Thanks,
ScottNot possible. Why don't you do this?

All of the system data collection sets have been running for 6+ months without any issues, couple of weeks ago the 'Server Activity' collection set failed to restart after a planned maintenance server reboot.
When attempting to manually start the collection set it indicates "success", but after refreshing the collection set it showing as stopped. Viewing the logs for the Data Collection (Server Activity) I am getting the message:
Waiting on a kernel object(s) failed. Inner Error ------------------>
The handle is invalid.
After some research into this really unhelpful message I came across one posting where this error has been found to occur in SP1. We are running SP2 which include the fix so this shouldn't be the problem (ref http://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/details/585210/sql-server-2008-data-collection-execmasterpackage-timeout).
To see more detail on the root cause of the error I enabled the additional tracing for data collection (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sqlagent/archive/2011/07/13/enabling-additional-tracing-for-data-collector.aspx). This provided an exception stack which indicated
that the issue was thrown to what looks like an existing file, referring to a location (e:\) which doesn't exist in our system.

I am now stumped as I haven't found anyone else experiencing this issue.
Any ideas, please help??Thanks for the pointer Eileen, problem solved.
Can't believe I missed it, but after reading the last section on system hangs it occurred to me that I hadn't checked that all dcexec.exe processes were killed when I disable the data collection service.
For anyone else experiencing this issue I identified the dcexec.exe processes using the following in cmd line:
TASKLIST /SVC /FI "IMAGENAME EQ DCEXEC.EXE"
On the default setup of the data collection there should be two dcexec.exe processes constantly running, one for "Server Activity" and another for "Query Statistics". On our server there were five running with the data collection disabled.
After killing all of the processes and restarting the data collection problem solved!!
Still need to understand why the processes didn't shut down cleanly when the server was restarted, but at least I know where to look now. -
Sorting Collection Sets by Date
Searched around for this first and now I'm asking the experts:
I recently started using LR and have followed some workflow recommendations by Scott Kelby to set up my images in collection sets with collections within each set as follows:
Collection Set Name
- Full Shoot (collection)
- Picks (collection)
- Selects (collection)
I want each collection set to be ordered by date (e.g. date of most recent image in set or date of import into LR). The only 2 ways I've found to sort these are by Name or Kind.
Any way to sort by date?
I suppose I can rename each collection set so that it starts with the date, but that seems silly when the photos all have dates already assigned automatically.
Thanks all.Well what I was looking for was to order the collection sets as opposed to the collections within them. But based on your response, it looks like I do need to use a numerical prefix to do this. (Thanks for the link to your workflow recommendations, I will spend more time checking them out.)
So for example if my collections are currently sorted by name like this:
Bangkok - Thailand
- Full Shoot
- Picks
- Selects
Hoi An - Vietnam
- Full Shoot
- Picks
- Selects
I'll add a date prefix so that the set is sorted like this:
2009 1012 Hoi An - Vietnam
- Full Shoot
- Picks
- Selects
2009 1203 Bangkok - Thailand
- Full Shoot
- Picks
- Selects
This will sort the collections by date, but must check if it is possible to reverse the sort so that most recent shows first.
dj paige: Yes, I was looking to order the collection names, not the individual photos.
Collections can be sorted by clicking on the + icon in the Collections panel and choosing either Sort by Name or
Sort by Kind. The only elaboration Adobe provides for Sort by Kind is to also call it "Sort by Type".

Wow, I am really regretting upgrading from v1. What used to be simple catalogueing tasks are now so frustrating, long winded and unreliable my temper is being tested daily.
I regularly photograph either similar events or the same annual events and like to organise my photos into collections, sub collections etc. For a new event once I have got the structure of collections set up in my mine catalogue I was then able to export this as a new catalogue to use as a template for future events. I started doing this as a result of great advise on this forum, as a work around for not being able to copy collection structures within a catalogue. The result was I didnt need to keep setting up a structure of many collections for each event, I could use the template catalogue and import this into the main one when the photos were organised.
So then I moved to Lightroom 3
First I found that with the introduction of collection sets I could no longer have nested collections and had to use nested collection sets with only the final level as a collection. A pain in the neck and one which meant my exisiting catalogue needed weeks of work to correct, in addition to an alteration to my workflow which still isnt ideal.
Because of this I have now been trying to exprot my revised structure of collections and collection sets as new templates for the reasosn mentioned above. But I can't becuase lightroom does not allow exporting collection sets, only collections i.e. one level, meaning this great workaround is no longer available.
So I thought what I would do is copy my catalogue, delete everything in it but the collection set structure I wanted for each event, and then use this as a template. Very time consuming but hopefully it would solve the problem. But it didn't as when I import the catalogue there seems to be a limit as to the number of collection set levels that get imported, meaning the lowest levels and hence the collections dont import, i.e. all the organisation is pointless as the photos import but not the collections.
So I thought OK I would move one of the collection sets from its parent to the top level and get around it this way, meaning I just have to do a little reorganisation after importing it. Not ideal, but hopefully it would solve the problem. Guess what, it doesnt. I move the collection set (and with it all its child sets and collections) to the top, and when I delete the collection set which used to be the parent, all the child sets and collections disappear from the new top level set.
Thsi is so frustrating. In 20 years of using software I have never before experienced a product that removes / fundamentally changes the way in which it works so drastically as this.
If anyone has any ideas how I can get around this I'd really appreciate itHello,
Please refer to the following article.
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sqlagent/archive/2011/07/22/remove-associated-data-collector-jobs.aspx
You can run the dcclenaup.sql script mentioned in the article.
Another option is using sp_syscollector_cleanup_collector.

Do you have your original catalog with the Collection Sets? What happened to your original catalog file with the collections sets? Where is it now?
What were these files in the folder in the Trash? Was there a file whose name ended with .LRCAT in the trash?
If you just dragged files to the external HD, this should not result in files appearing in the trash, unless there are other steps you haven't told us. -
Does lightroom mobile support collection sets?
I have extensive Collection Sets in Lightroom for desktop to keep very large groups of images organized for various projects. I'd like to have these available on LR Mobile, but can't find a way to select a Collection Set and sync it to LR mobile. What am I missing? I can successfully sync individual collections that are within a collection set.
To answer question #1, I think the answer is YES, but that really depends on how reliable your network is
To answer your second question #1, the answer is YES. Lightroom isn't just writing the metadata, it is really re-writing the entire file. There is (as far as I know), no way to add the metadata into an existing file on a disk; it must re-write the entire file. -
Keyword search on collection set not working for specific sub-collections
I am having the following problem:
When I do a search (Text->Keyword->Contains All-> for a keyword (in my
case "Fave"), it does not work if I select the collection set that contains the
collection that contains the images with that keyword.
It DOES work if I select the folder, parent folder, or just the
collection that contains the image. Just not the collection set.
The details of how this came about are below - and are probably a
little unusual, but not outside the realm of what should be allowed.
Is there a way to reset/reindex keywords in a collection?
Specifically:
images lives in collection C1 which is part of collection set
CS1. It lives in F1 (on disk and in LR) which is in parent folder
PF1. A keyword search works when I select F1 or PF1 or C1, but NOT
when I select CS1
This happens on a set of folders that went through the following
(totally allowable?) sequence:
I am running on a Windows 7 64 bit machine with 64 bit LR3.3
I have an internal disk where I keep my catalog and images. Windows
mounts this as P:. I also mount it on my Desktop as the folder
"Lightroom" (this allows me to change to a larger external disk
by mounting it in the same place without changing the locations of
all the files).
I mistakenly imported pics into P:/PF1 rather than
C:/.../Desktop/Lightroom/PF1 as I normally do.
Added keywords made a collection C1 put the images in it, and added
C1 to collection set CS1
Having realized my import mistake (P: rather than
C:/.../Desktop/Lightroom), I went in the Folders->P: section and did
an Update Folder Location on F1 to C:/.../Desktop/Lightroom/F1
This seemed to be all fine, but this weird Keyword search problem
resulted.
I have tried the following things:
o Deleting and re-adding Keywords in the Collection
o Deleting and re-adding the Keywords in the Folder
o Renaming and relocating the Folder
o Create new collection C2 and move pics from F1 into C2See my simplified recipe for reproducing this bug (which turns out not to be related to the drive mounting I described):

Hi
I have created a collection set in one of my Lightroom catalogues which has a series of smart collections and embedded collection sets within it. I use this in my workflow for improving productivity. I normally put a complete photo shoot into my workflow collection folder which then filter through the different smart collections, once I have geotagged them, starred them, developed them, until I am left with a series of processed images. All images are removed from the workflow at the end ready for the next photo shoot.
What I would like to do is export an entire collection set with all my embedded smart collection to enable me to use the workflow on different catalogs. I don't want to move the photos just the collections.
Is there any way I can do this? I have found methods for "export smart collection settings" but nothing for a complete set.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Would you settle for Rob adding this functionality to present version?
See scripts:
* Export Collections and Sets
* Import Collections and Sets

Note: you can export regular collections/sets and import into a publish service, or vice-versa.. - supports both regular and smart collections.

Limit a "child" smart collection to only photos found in the "parent" collection set
Sorry if this question has been asked before, but here it is. I'm starting to organize my pics into Collections, and while some of those collections might be topic/keyword-driven (like a Collection for "spiders" or "flowers"), many of them are for events or "happenings", such as a birthday or Halloween or a trip to Florida. Within each collection set (which I call the "parent"), I'm making "child" collections that narrow down the photos in the set in increasing levels of perfection. This is pretty much what Scott Kelby and others evangelize, and I like the idea. So for instance, I'm working on my child's 3rd birthday party photos, and I really just want the following structure:
Cooper's 3rd birthday [this is a Collection Set]
- All photos [every photo I took, minus the lousy/duplicate ones I deleted after import]
- Picks [the "best" pics - photos I've flagged as a "pick" in Lightroom - which I'm going to upload to Flickr]
What I'm trying to do is simply make "Picks" a Smart Collection that automatically contains any photo in the "Cooper's 3rd birthday" Collection Set that also has a "pick" flag on it. But it seems there's no way to tell Lightroom to limit a Smart Collection to only the photos in the parent Collection Set. Or is there? If I have the "Picks" Smart Collection look for all flagged picks, it searches the whole catalog, not just the "Cooper's 3rd birthday" Collection Set.
(Note: I don't import into folders on my hard drive for different events, I just import everything into folders by month/year, so I can't use a folder name as a search criteria.)
In this case, I see two immediate solutions, both of which are sort of workarounds, not a universal "clean" solution:
Add an additional criteria to search for "picks" that were also captured on the date of the party
Rename the child collection "All photos" to "Cooper's 3rd birthday: all photos" and then use that text as a search criteria for the smart collection
I know that this is a Scott Kelby setup (making sub-collections that are increasingly specific subsets of other children in the Collection Set) and not an Adobe-designed system, but still, it seems like telling a Smart Collection to limit its scope to the Collection Set in which it resides is an obvious feature. I'm inclined to think I'm missing something here.
Any thoughts?Daniel940 wrote:

I think it's a good idea - consider making a feature request here:
http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/new
PS - In general, I like the idea of smart collections being treated as fancy lib filters, so their selection along with other folders and/or collections serves to narrow (like it used to be) instead of broaden (as it does now). Oh well, have a little regress with your progress... -

Creating new "Collection Set" deselects everything for no reason.
In Library mode: Creating new Collection Set performs "Select none" (changes source) for no reason. A new set cannot contain photos (until it has a collection) so there is no reason to change source to it yet. It is behaving as if it were a new collection. I often select photos first, then decide whether they need to be in a collection. If I need to first create a set for it --I lose the selection before I can place them.
Is this "as designed" and am I overlooking something? If Verizon sent you an STB, it should have been delivered via a delivery service (they use UPS around here). Included in the paperwork should have been a return label that would allow you to drop it off at any UPS store, and the return shipping would be free.
If I were you, I would keep whichever STB and remote look to be in better condition, pack up the other one with any accessories they demand to have returned, and drop it off at whichever service delivered it. Make sure to get and keep some kind of confirmation number that the delivery service has received the box. Though I've never had any problems myself, I've heard a few horror stories about Verizon claiming to have never received the returned merchandise and trying to charge the customer for it. Better safe than sorry.
FYI - The reason that FIOS triggers the spell check is because it is spelled FiOS (Fiber Optic Services).

Cannot select a music into slideshow and book slideshow presentations. In the older Mac this was easy. With new Mac OS X 10.6.8 it should work as I can stop the slideshow with cursor but pop up window for choosing music is dead. I cannot drag music into it. Preselected music just goes on.
I am talking about iPhoto. In my old Mac even in Books choosing slideshow gives a pop up where you can select a music from I tunes library. In this new one I can stop the slideshow with cursor and it shows music option but it is, as I said dead. Does not response at all to commands.

Whats the best setting to set a slideshow of still pictures too, im not sure which compression type either, ive made a few before thru iMovie but id like to use quicktime pro and change screen size (320X240 if possible) for the web, and trying to make it the smallest file size as i can. Any help would be appreciated.
I should say im exporting the iMovie file (saved as, for the web setting in iMovie) to change the screen size in quicktime 7.0.4 if anyone needs that infoActually you're in the wrong forum and should re-post here. https://discussions.apple.com/community/professional_applications/final_cut_stud io
Nonetheless, I'll just pass on these comments about slide shows – FWIW.
My preference is to edit then in a 720p timeline. I find they scale down better from 720 than from 1080 – fewer artifacts, especially when doing pans and zooms. And often these are going to DVD, which means considerable additional down scaling.
Size them in PS (or the editor of your choice) the same as your sequence settings. If you do have moves (pans zooms) then double the size (ie, 2160X1440).
Good luck.

E220s freezing without symptoms after renewing fan and thermal pad
Hello fellow Lenovians, I recently renewed a rattling fan in my E220s. Since then I get permanent freezes every time, starting from ca. 5 to 40 minutes on. I checked with Sandra, and to my understanding no temperature sensor shows anything abnormal.
