Collections/Albums & Stacks Behavior Question

hi, I'm currently a PSE6 user and after upgrading from PSE5 to 6, I do not use its Organizer for a very specific reason:
In PSE5, I used Collections extensively, especially to combine photos from various events (Stacks) to create VCDs and slideshows.
To help minimize Organizer clutter, I make extensive use of Stacks.
I tried to create an Album (which is the new name for Collections).
I was able to create an album, my problem is w/ regards to populating it w/ pictures. If I open a stacked set of pictures (grouped w/ a Keyword Tag), and try to drag (just) one or a few picture(s) to my Album, the entire set of pictures gets tagged w/ the Album.
If I try to drag the Album icon over to a single picture in a stacked set, again, the entire set of pictures gets tagged.
This is not what I'm looking for - I want to build an Album with several pictures from various stacked sets, but not the entire stack in the Album.
Adobe Support confirmed this is how it's supposed to work.
I've been looking at image mgmt software, like IDimager as I do need to catalog my images. People have suggested LR. So, before I take the plunge (i.e. DL and try the trial), I'm trying to see if LR works the same way as PSE6?

Also, at least if you import from PSE5, your collections will be imported also (but no stacks or version sets).

Very slow collections/albums

When I import a collection (album.xml) the collections (>100) are very, very slow. There are no pictures in the collections, but opening / closing a collection-group takes more than 5 seconds.
Is there anyone who has tried to work with many collections-groups?

When I create a .xml with 5 groups of 100 albums each, opening and closing an album group is a little sluggish -- about two seconds.
As I suspected in my suggestion to turn off the use of icons in the keyword-tag display, the problem is related to icons. If you add a <tagset-item-value-icon> to your albums, opening and closing groups should go pretty fast (it does for me). You can get a sample of that XML tag by saving some keyword tags to a file. Though PSE 7 doesn't use icons for albums, it is probably using the same code that it uses for displaying the tag heirarchy, and that code has performance problems if you don't define icons for keyword tags.
I've attached my Albums.xml for you to play with -- you need to view the message on the Web to get the attachment, and if it says "Queued" and is greyed out, then the forum software is broken again.

Upgraded to iOS8 and the photos in the collection album won't upload to my computer

Recently my mac book got stolen, so I bought a new one. I hooked up my iPad to my computer to sync everything from my iPad to my computer. I recently upgraded my phone to iOS8 after my computer had gotten stolen, but before I got the new one. When I went to sync the photos I realized that only the recent photos I had taken that were in the recently added album uploaded to my computer. I have 300+ photos in the collection album, but I can't seem to transfer them onto my computer. How do I do this?

Have these photos been taken with the iPad or synced from your stolen computer to the iPad? If they have been synced to the iPad with iTunes, you cannot download them again. Syncing with iTunes is only one-way. In that case mail them or add them to a Shared Photo Stream.

I have an Spanning tree problem when i conect 2 links from Switch DELL M6220 (there are blades to virtual machines too) to 2 links towards 2 switches CISCO 3750 connected with an stack (behavior like one switch for redundancy, with one IP of management)
In dell virtual machine is Spanning tree rapid stp, and in 3750 is Spanning tree mode pvst, cisco says that this is not important, only is longer time to create the tree.
I dont know but do you like this solutions i want to try on sunday?:
Could Spanning tree needs to work to send one native vlan to negociate the bdpus? switchport trunk native vlan 250
Is it better to put spanning-tree guard root in both 3750 in the ports to mitigate DELL to be root in Spanning Tree?

Keep album stacked together by album artist, in a library sorted by artist?

I have my iTunes library sorted after “Artist”. Which gives me nothing but trouble with collections or collaborations.
So what I would like to do is have iTunes to ignore the default or general sorting by “Artist”. And instead sort only this album by “Album Artist”.
I have 12 songs with the same album title, same genre, same album artist but with different song names and artist.
But regardless of how I try to tell iTunes that it has to sort this one by album artist and not the artist, it never does.
I have tried at select all the 12 songs, get info. Write the same Albums Artist, the same Album Title and leave the Artist blank. And I choose sort by Album Artist and under option I choose part of a collection.
But this isn’t working for me, As soon I go back to my library, which sorted by Artist. The albums is still spread all over the place.
HOW DO I KEEP THESE 12 SONGS STACKED TOGETHER, without having to chance the Artist to Various Artists and write each individual artist to the song title?
Which in my opinion is the wrong and oldschool approach.

Yes, I have just checked and rechecked it again. I have set an Album Artist value for each songs and the album in general. And even if i add the Album by Artist to my list view and sort after that. It still acts up. It can't for some reason keep the correct collections together, eventhough they are set as a collection in options.
But i don't really, keeping collections together didn't used to be a problem before. But i will keep trying some different things. But it's pretty annoying, that iTunes has such trouble with this.
I really have a pretty tighty library, everything is named and set up correctly (haha, or apparently not).

Moving Multiple Albums & Album Sort Order Questions

Hopefully this is a really easy question to answer, but I just can't figure out how to do this.
1. Can you move multiple albums around in Aperture? I just imported my iPhoto libraries and I'd like to groups a set of the albums that I have into one project. The problem is that I can only move one album at a time.
2. Can you specify the sort order or manual set the order that albums appear in projects or folders? It seems that Aperture automatically sorts them alphabetically.

you are correct, automatically alphabetically only ... i haven't been abble to change this at all ... the only way to force something else is by adding a ~ or other character that is ahead of 0 ...

Albums and events question

Hi when I drag folders containing photos into Iphoto it creates an event. What I currently do is after the event is created, I select an event, I hit the + sign in the bottom left and create an album.
I like having my albums on the left side for quick access to my library of photos. The problem is that if I add 30 folders, 30 events are then created.
I have to manually create an album out of each event one at a time. Is there any way that once an event is created it automatically creates and album. So say that 10 events are created, 10 albums will appear on the left.
If I select a couple events and hit the + option and hit create an album, it will only create one album out of the events selected. I would like to select multiple events at one time and have multiple albums created instead of just one. How do I do that?

Well let me answer a question with a question
Why have all your Events mimicked in Albums? IF you can find the pic in an Event, you can find it in an Album.
To say nothing of all the basics: If you have the year, month, day. Title, keywords, camera a model etc etc you can use any (and all) of these to find your pics too.
To merge Events: Simply drag one to another in the iPhoto Window.

Switch stack connectivity question

my question since i have been thrown to the wolves is (with very little experience): I am at one site with 2 stacks. Is connecting stack 1 to stack 2 done with a crossover or straight through cable? On stack 1 I have 6/0/19 and 6/0/20 being used for avaya vm erver and avaya ip office. So I need to make sure that second stack can communciate to number 1 in order for the prots on the second stack to recognize the vm server and ip office locations. I'm a little confused. I know I shouldn't use a stackwise cable. Any help would be appreciated.

Not to be overly technical or picky, the term "stack" refers to the feature that the 3750 is capable of and stacking this platform would require a "stackwise" cable. It should come with the switch and it's silver. you connect the 3750 through stack port in the back of this switch. Now, if you are simply connecting two switches together, you will require a cross-over cable. A good rule of thumb is when connecting two alike devices you will need cross-over, like router to router or switch to switch. If they are not alike then you will need straight.

Viewing Photoshop Elements 9 Albums - Stacked Photos

Elements 9 will allow you to stack photos, this is useful if you have edited an original and want to keep both versions. When I have photos included in an album that are part of a stack, Apple TV (new version) displays all images from that stack, not just the top image. Maybe this is a limitation of the Photoshop API, but It bears looking into as a bug fix.
The work-around for now is to copy the top image in the stack to another folder and just include that in the album.

To be honest this doesn't surprise me in the slightest.
I think you may be expecting a bit much from the AppleTV to discriminate the top version of a stack, it may simply look at a folder and harvest images from there rather than interrogating any kind of album database that PSE 9 has. Long time since I used PSE mind you, it may be that AppleTV does use some API to interact with it, in which case you may be in with a chance of a fix. I suspect apple's own suites behave better in this regard, but I don't know for certain.

Set Speed behavior question

I don't gedit... I've applied 2 Set Speed Behaviours of 50% to a clip: the 1st one to the first 18 frames and the 2nd one to the last 15 frames. The clip's original duration of 00:00:05:21 is unchanged after applying the set speed behaviours. I was expecting that the duration would increase by 33 frames (18 + 15). I have not used ease in or ease out (they are set to 0). I have not blended the frames or used Optical Flow. When I scrub through the clip frame by frame, I can see that Set Speed has duplicated each frame, which is what I expected. But if it's doubled the frames and not increased the overall duration, surely something must have been dropped? The clip ends at the same place.
The clip's original frame rate is 25fps and the format is HD Blackmagic 10 Bit, 1920 x 1080, progressive
Can anyone explain why there is no frame rate change please. I've spent a couple of days searching to try to find a discussion on the Set Speed behavior in Motion 3 but haven't found anything that goes into the frame rate implications.

Good question as I originally imported the clip as project to ensure I had the right settings. This did create a project duration of 00:00:05:21, so I changed it in the Project Properties dialogue to 00:00:10:00. I then applied the 2 Set Speed behaviours and RAM previewed all. After frame 00:00:05:21 the remaining frames are black - ie the clip still ends at 00:00:05:21 even though the project's duration is 00:00:10:00.

MDIFrame\Sheet behavior question

I'm using PB 11.5 and I've modernized the classic PB menus to appear more web-like in our applications. Instead of embedding the menu on the frame's menuname property. I have a user object on the Frame's workspace along with the MDIClient that calls each of the menu objects like popup menus.
We've had good response from this approach, however a user questioned the behavior of the sheets when clicking on the menuitems generated by the "mergeoption = windowmenu!" setting. These are provided by PB via the Menu Merge Options ( SyBooks Online )
When the menu is set on the frame via menuname and the user clicks on one of these menuitems to enlarge a minimize sheet, the sheet returns to it's previous pre-minimzed state.
When a popup menu is used and the user clicks on one of these menuitems to enlarge a minimize sheet, the sheet remains in it's minimized state.
In both cases if the windows are in any other state these menuitems work the same, the behavior only seems to differentiate when the sheets are minimized.
I've considered writing a workaround, however, each of the windows functions will not restore a sheet that is in a minimized state. Closing and re-opening seems like the only possibility and we are not considering this option.
Questions:
1. Any known reason for this behavior?
2. Any other options to consider as workarounds?

Patch deployment and installation behavior question

I created a new Software Update Group to deploy a revised KB today that didn't require a reboot. The deployment was set to be available ASAP and install ASAP. I set a maintenance window of 1:30PM on the collections that received the deployment.
When I ran a report, to verify the patch status, prior to that start of the maintenance window I saw that the patch had already installed.
Does this behavior change depending on the patch? I have other collections that I do monthly updating to, this same way, and they don't install patches until the start of the maintenance window I believe. Should I be using a specific time for
my deadlines, or should I be using ASAP? I don't want servers sitting in a 1/2 installed but yet to be rebooted state for any period of time.

Collection of stacked images cannot be exported

I've been thinking my catalog is corrupt for the last five hours, but now I think there's a different problem. My catalog passes integrity checks and can be backed up and optimized and everything - the only problem is with stacking.
I created a collection, and added all my stacked images to it. I tried exporting the collection as a catalog - fail. I tried selecting all the images in the collection and exporting that - fail. I tried selecting all the images in the collection, switching to "All Photographs" so that I was not in a collection context, and exporting only those selected images - fail. I seem to be able to export any other combination of images and/or collections just fine.
There's a problem with exporting stacked images, but I'm not sure what it is.

I had about 250 stacked images that I added to a collection. I expanded all stacks, selected all the stacked images, and a created a collection from the selected images. The following steps are in the original post. I can export one or two stacks here and there, but trying to export all the images in the collection (as a collection or as a 'select all') fails.
I have my collections set to back up every time I open Lightroom, with verification. I've also optimized the catalog a couple of times. It still doesn't report any errors.
The system is a MacBook Pro CoreDuo 2.16 GHz, 2 GB RAM, ATI graphics card, OS X Leopard 10.5.6, and Lightroom 2.2.

XSS Stack 05 questions

Yesterday xSS patch 5 has been released. I have found the release notes (note: 774661 - ERP 2004 SP Stack 5 (12/2004) Release and Information Note). After reading it, I have two questions regarding the Netweaver version. First a quote:

Please use NetWeaver 2004 SR1 in an ERP 2004 environment only after availability and deployment of ERP 2004 SP Stack 02/2005 (expected for week 7/2005)

1. ERP 2004 SP Stack 02/2005 (expected for week 7/2005). Is this xSS/ECC5.0 Stack 6 (week 7/2005 in SAP Support Package Stack Schedule)?
2. Only Netweaver 04 SR1 is mentioned. We are upgrading every time, from SP2 till SP9. Can we use Stack 05 on our environment (ECC5.0/NW SP9)? I cannot imagine the xSS components are released without the dependent other components.

Of course You are free to use e.g. SAP BASIS 6.40 SP 10 together with SAP_APPL 5.00 SP 5, but SAP does not recommend it.
What You desribe is like the old SAP policy stating something like "Always use the latest SP for each component You are using."
The current SAP policy says "The SP Stacks are sets of Support Packages and patches for the respective product version that must be used in the given combination"

Perhaps there is a slight confusion about the term "SP Stack":
In the SAP Terminology here is there is a ERP 2004 SP Stack including many SPs, like all of the NW 04 SP Stack it is based on. All SPs described in note 774661 make the Stack 5 (12/2004).
I would recommend to use ERP 2004 SP Stack 5, which is based on NW 04 SP Stack 9. And in the next step go to ERP 2004 SP Stack 6, which is based and validated on NW 04 SP Stack 10.
I hope I could omit further confusion.

3750x stack behavior

I installed a new 3750x stack today, 3 members. I found that one of the stack cables is too short, so I just plugged two of the 3 in and fired them up.
I expected them to form a single stack, but ended up with a stack of 2 and 1. Is this expected behavior? It's pretty much what what it would look like with a failed cable...
And no, I just powered them on and left for the day...didn't have an day time to console in.

I would also recommend getting the top and bottom switches connected, both for redundancy and performance. If the standard cable is too short, you can order a longer cable.
