College Bandwidth problems

So I am trying to get my video chat to work with a friend from home however i keep getting bandwidth problems. It has worked before fine at other places. Is it because they are blocking the ports or limiting the bandwidth? Is there any way around this?

They are most likely blocking a port that you need. Most colleges do this to keep the possibility of attacks, etc. You might could talk to the IT dep. and get them to enable a blocked port.
This is a list of the ports that AIM needs: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93208.
Also... you should, if you have the OS firewall enabled, open these ports in the OS firewall: 5060, 5190, 5297, 5298, 5678, 16384 through 16403.
Instructions for opening these ports are in the above support article.
Hope this helps,
Cory

  • Bandwidth Problems

We are trying to use iChat with a grandson in Iraq. We get a satisfactory Picture ( pixelates frequentl but passable) but almost unintelligible Audio. We however had an audio chat with sound as clear as a local phone call. He uses AIM in Iraq on a PC we are using Mac and iChat over here. He has bandwidth problems over there as he notices slow photo uploads and downloads. He is new at this as he just got the CAM for Christmas, does anyone know if there are there bandwidth adjustments in AIM that he can tinker with to try to improve the situation like we have in iChat, or any suggestions to try. (I doubt that adjsuting the speed on the Mac on this side will help!)

    Hi,
On the Mac end it should have System Preferences < Quicktime > Streaming set to 1.5Mbps
In the iChat > Preferences > Video section > Bandwidth Limit it may pay to try 500kbps or 200kbps to limit what you send him.
AIM 5.9 on a PC does have a Outgoing adjustment and I am not sure if changing it will help the incoming stuff but it may free up processor time.
He should start a Chat with you (or you with him)
In AIM 5.9 he has his Preview in a tab behind your incoming Video.
He should bring this to the front (And take off Pic-in Pic if set)
Next to the Pic and on the right he should now have a small squarish iCon
    Click on this
This will bring up a slider.
Sliding it to the left actually reduces the quality of the Pic from his end.
It is not normally visible but what it does do is allow his processor to produce more frames a sec.
If you open the Connection Doctor (Video Menu) in iChat you will see his incoming Frame Rate and Bit rate and as he slides this to the left you may see changes.
If there are no changes then the issue is going to be the Bandwidth at his end.
At this stage I would suggest a Web Browser based alternative like MeBeam
See here items 9 through 12
These use Flash in a Web Browser to allow access to the Camera and Mic
Once you have entered a room name (your choice) it creates a web page with that name and pops up the Flash Control Panel. Set this to Allow and choose your camera and adjust the Mic volume (Use Headphones/headset if possible)
The MeBeam site pops the control Panel up as soon as you enter the room and can be re-accessed via Settings. the other sites require you use the Settings Button first.
    Hope this helps
I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link.

  • IChat bandwidth problem after upgrading to Quicktime Pro 7.1

I just updated Quicktime Pro 7.1 (from 7.0) and applied the Security update to my iMac G5 1.8 GHz.
My girlfriend and I have been chatting with no problems. She's running an new iMac Dual Core and I have an iMac G5 running 10.3.9. We tried to hook up tonight and kept getting this error:
2006-05-11 21:41:51 -0400: There is insufficient bandwidth to maintain the conference.
Detected 48 kbps upstream and 162 kbps downstream bandwidth; 50 kbps required.
We're both on Cinti Bell's Fuse/Zoomtown ADSL so we have plenty of bandwidth. Set iChat bandwidth to None and st Quicktime to 1.5 Mbps T1/internet/LAN.
Any ideas why, after a month of no problems chatting, this bandwidth issue has come up? She's running 4.5 (hasn't upgraded and hasn't sone the just rreleased security update)?

OK - My gal is here for the weekend so it will be next monday evening before we can toubleshoot as I don't know any other place where I can find someone to video chat with for testing purposes. We're using AIM accounts, but like I say, before the upgrade I did it was working fine. I've been through most of the 'usual' from rebuilding permissions, diskwarrior to ensure the disk is OK. Next week I'll trash preferences and such when we troubleshoot.
I appreciate the response. If I find anything out I'll update this thread.

  • "Insufficient Bandwidth Problem" and "Did not respond" error messages

I am getting 3 error messages when I try to video chat using isight and ichat with my son's PC (which does video chat with my husband's PC) I have not been able to video chat although I can instant message with my son's PC.
    1. It says insufficient bandwidth"
    2. It says "starting" for a LONG time, and never finishes.
    3. Or they request a chat with me and I get a "Did not respond" message.
I have tried connecting with both my .mac account and my aim name inside of iChat
    So far, I have:
    1. Changed Quicktime streaming to 1mbps Cable
    2. Reinstalled Quicktime 7.0.1, erasing 7.0.3
    3. Made an ichat AV entry under Firewall, listing TCP etc ports for network entry, using numbers from previous posts
    4. Firewall is off
Since video chat works between my son's computer and my husband's, I doubt that it is our cable company or my son's. My son can also video chat with friends in his area. They are using msn or aim. However I have not been able to establish a connection using ichat.
If there are no other fixes, then I will probably have to call Apple tomorrow for a return on the isight that I just purchased. Too bad, because the Los Angeles Times this morning said that iChatAV image quality is superior to even Skype's new product 2.0 for Windows. At this time Skype does not have a cross platform product. Is that the problem with iChatAV, it really only works with other Macs?
Please advise if there is anything else that I can do to correct the problem. I have used an apple computer for more than 20 years, since the first little Apple IIc that I had. This is the first thing that I haven't been able to figure out.
    Thank you,
    Linda

    HI,
    This
    1. It says insufficient bandwidth"
    2. It says "starting" for a LONG time, and never finishes.
    3. Or they request a chat with me and I get a "Did not respond" message.
Normally implies the ports are not open some where.
The bit I have changed to Bold is not specific enough
I have tried connecting with both my .mac account and my aim name inside of iChat
    So far, I have:
    1. Changed Quicktime streaming to 1mbps Cable
    2. Reinstalled Quicktime 7.0.1, erasing 7.0.3
    3. Made an ichat AV entry under Firewall, listing TCP etc ports for network entry, using numbers from previous posts
    4. Firewall is off
Can you tell us exactly which ports you have opened and which protocols. APple Doc 93208 is Wrong.
    1. All iChat AV traffic is UDP except for ports 5190 and 5298, which need to be open for both TCP and UDP; and 5220, 5222, and 16384-16403, which need to be open for TCP only.
You have not siad what ports you have opened and by what method in your modem ?

  • Bandwidth problems with sprint 5

I can get consistently better bandwidth using osmf 1.6 sprint 1 than I can with 1.6 spring 5. Very strange but I made several tests and it they were conclusive accross browsers. What could the problem be?

Found the problem, sorry. Starting on sprint 2 the autoDynamicStreamSwitch is set to false as default.
Which brings me to my next point: Why is OSMF so complicated?!!!!

  • Network Bandwidth Problem

    Hello everyone,
I am having bandwidth issues in my network. The current internet line from the ISP is 50Mbps, but we are not getting the complete bandwidth (almost 20Mbps is lost). I have been analyzing the network past few days using PRTG and learnt that a major portion of the bandwidth is being utilized by an unkown Source IP going towards unkown destination IP using an unknown port number(none of the IP's and Port are being shown in their respective tables, just the utilized bandwidth shown but rest of Source IPs, Destination IPs & Port being used are shown), So I came to a conclusion that some one in my network might be using a proxy such as hotspot shield which is taking major portion of the bandwidth and where i assume the bandwidth is being leaked. Is there any means of blocking the use of hotspot shield?. I am not sure whether this is the actual problem, Or are there any other possible problems such as a bad network layout. help needed badly
    Thanks in advance

You haven't provided enough information to make an informed recommendation.
A high level description of your network connectivity and information about what instrumentation your used to draw  the conclusions you  have from PRTG would be a good start.
You need to ensure that your are capturing information from the right point (or points) to account for all the the load presented to your provider.Typically this would be a Netflow export and/or SNMP query taken from an egress interface at or near your provider handoff.

  • 3 Speakers bandwidth problem

HI I use winxp sp2, I try many type of configuration, to get more bandwidth, the last its all airports in a 3com office connect 54mbps, I disable all protocol not needed to itunes to send music to the airports, such as QoS packet, are enable only tcp and client.
Anyone Know why and have any idea? The bandwidth used from 3 airports its only 40% at 11mbps, I suppose its windows that control hard the packet that goes in & out from the wireless card...
I hope someone know a solution to solve this problem I see some people have same problem, If also can tell me a mac user have same, to know if its really and only a windows problem and not airports or itunes that arent able the use the full bandwidth.
    Thx in advance to all.

  • Do I have a Bandwidth Problem

I have a G5 Dual 2 gig when I am using idvd to mux my DVDs I find I cannot us the import button in iMovie I want to know if this is natural. I have a terabyte 800 drive attached to my 800 firewire port and I am using a Canopus ADVC 100 which is my capture analogue to DV capture box which is a firewire 400 device which is attached to the 400 firewire input on the back of the G5. I am using all 3 of my USB ports on the back of the G5. I have a Belkin USB 5 way PCI card which has 5 lacie drives attached to it. I have a combie PCI card which houses 3 USB slots and 2 Firewire 400 slots of which I am using a Dongle USB Key in one of the 3USB slots, and a Lacie Dual layer external firewire 400 in one of the two Fire wire ports on this combie card the rest of the slots are left free. All the slots on the front of my G5 are left vacant.
    The Question
Can anyone let me know whether the problem is that I have too many devices attached and that it is eating up my Bandwidth. Or is it a safety feature where the G5 shuts off any attempt to use my canopus to import Footage into iMovie.

Hi I feel we have drifted somewhat this is my original problem
_Ordinarily iMovie works ok no probs!_ Its Just when I am in Mux mode with iDVD it seems to stop me from using the Canopus in iMovie or Final cut pro both app say that they have lost connection with the capture device

  • Airport Express 802.11n - speed, throughput, bandwidth problems only 1MB/s

    Hi there,
I got a brand new Airport Express with 802.11n. But I'm really disappointed with the speed in a draft-n-only environment.
Before I used as a router my 54Mbit/s Linksys WRT54GL with DD-WRT v23, which gave me on its g-Standard network a throughput of 3 MB/s when copying something via finder to my Ubuntu server.
But with the new AE I got only 1 MB/s as transfer rate for the same job. I tried already various configuration setups, but nothing helped. It seems to me if there is a bandwidth limitation thing in the AE.
Can someone help me to find the reason for my problem or give me some advice after what I have to look at?
    Many Thanks,
    Jan.

    Welcome to the discussions, Tiggar!
A few suggestions from here, where my AirPort Express far outperforms my older "g" router.
    1) Try to position the AirPort Express as high as possible and away from any other electronic gear. The general design of the product unfortunately encourages users to position the device low on a wall, often behind a desk and close to other electronic devices that sometimes can interfere with the wireless signal. Use an extension cable to get the Express up high and give it as much free air as you can.
    2) You need to remember that higher frequency "n" signals...although faster...do not penetrate walls and other obstructions as well as lower frequency "g" signals. Try to establish a line of sight situation between your computer and the Express if possible and mimimize obstructions in the signal path.
    3) Your Linksys may have been using a different wireless channel than the Express. Try different channel settings on the Express to see if you can find a good channel that is free of interference. To do this, open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup and click the Wireless tab below the row of icons to get to the Wireless settings page.
    4) Turn off any cordless phones that you may have there for an hour or so to see if you notice any improvement in performance. If you do, try to position the cordless phone as far away as possible from the AirPort Express.
Let us know if things improve when you can.

  • College website problems

Hello again. This is kind of a specific problem.  I go to ICC (illinois central college) in east peoria il.  On our website, there is a link for "Blackboard", which is our access to grades, email, and online quiz taking.  I have tried to access this website from my BB, a 8330 with verizon running OS 4.5, using the same username and password, but it says that my information cannot be found.  Does anyone else have a problem like this?

  • College Wifi Problems

I currently have an Ipod Touch 2G upgraded to IOS4 and cannot connect to my college dorms internet... it was at the 3.1.3 OS before and every time I would connect to the internet a *web page* (not the ask for a security password because it is an open internet connection that they monitor through their own servers) would pop up and ask me to type in a user name and password to access the college internet which I had and could get on just fine before. Now though with the IOS4 the internet page wont pop up and allow me to type a user name and password so it will just disconnect me from the internet and not allow me to use it.... anyone else have this problem or know how to fix it??

Next time it says it is connected, tap Settings > WiFi > and then tap the blue > next to the network name.
If your IP address starts with 164.x.x.x or isn't present at all, then you are not connected to any network. You can try tapping "Forget this Network" or "Renew Lease" (located at the top and bottom of the page displaying your parameters. You may even what to turn WiFi off of a bit and then turn it back on.
If you continue to have a problem, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings and try logging into the network again. Instead of going immediately to Safari, wait a few moment and see if your login screen doesn't just pop up as part of the WiFi logon screens.

  • MSI HD3870X2 OC Bandwidth Problem!

Ok so i installed my new X2 OC edition and noticed that i only get 28.8GB/s bandwidth,
ive seen other people on internet with the same problem.
I have one 6pin and one 8pin connected.
This is what its suppose to be @ 512mb!
    512mb = 57.7 GB/s x2 =114.2GB/s
    This is what i have
    28.8GB/s
And it shouldn't be be due to 2d clocks, the bandwidth should remain the same at all time.(i was told)
I added a picture for you so you can see my problem.
    My system specs:
    q6600
    GA-P35-DS4
    MSI HD3870X2 OC
    Thermaltake Toughpower 750W
The PCI-E bus is set at x16 so that's not the problem here.
    Any assistance is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

    @Bas
I am talking about the memory itself (2x 512mb=1024mb) and not the bus bandwidth.
Well you are using the wrong terms.
First, memory-size is expressed in MB = MegaByte (mb = milli-bit never heard of that)
Second, memory size and memory speed are 2 different things and have nothing to do with each other.
Third, (memory) speeds can be expressed in either Mb(it) or MB(yte), but don't forget, it takes 8 bits to make a Byte.
Also speeds are normally in Mb/s or MB/s, but those never express size.
Please use the correct names next time, else we (me) have no clue what you meant to say.

  • Bandwidth problem

    dear sir,
i am getting 256kbps dedicated leased line what should be the upload and download speed.

The line rate is 32 KBytes per second. If you add compression, you might improve on that, depending on the nature of your data. Practically, you are unlikely to achieve greater than 90% of the maximum line rate.
However, don't forget that there are a lot of other factors invoolved that could slow you down, such as server performance, TCP window size vs. end-to-end delay, etc. etc. The overall performance is not entirely determined by the line rate.
Generally we assume that the available bandwidth is 75% of the line rate, the remaining 25% being the allowance for overheads, routing protocols etc.
If you are having a specific problem with the line, then post a show int from both ends of the line, and we shall see if we can work out what is going on.

  • ITunes Store Bandwidth Problem Today

I've read a few posts here today about problems connecting to the Store. I got to the Store, made a purchase, and the download is still going because it is so slow.
Over the past week I have downloaded 5 episodes of Battlestar Galactica and they all went very fast at ~6000kbps. But today my download is only going at 500kbps!
They must be having some kind of server problems today.

  • Bandwidth problem connecting with one person on my buddy list

I'm connected to the web via cable modem, which is connected to an Apple Extreme Base Station. I was able to video chat with my brother-in-law in LA who is connecting via DSL. Recently we can't video chat. Nothing seems to have been changed in either of our settings and we can both connect with others that we share in common in our Buddy list.
All we get now is the Not enough Bandwidth error. Any ideas why this is happening?

Error 22 will be the Quicktime setting, the Bandwidth setting in iChat or something the ISP is doing top the Connection speed.
Reinstalling Leopard for just that is not likely to change anything.
