Collision Acrobat and Reader

On my sytem there is XPP, Acrobat 5, Reader 9 and IE7. When I click a PDF file located somewhere on my computer it opens - as desired - in Reader 9. However, if I click a link in IE7 to open a PDF file online, it opens in Acrobat 5. But in most cases I get an error, because Acrobat 5 can not open PDFs created with new versions.
For compatibility reasons I have to keep the Acrobat 5
How can I "convince"  IE7 / XPP to open PDFs online with Reader as well
Thanks for an hint

That's easy uninstall Acrobat and re-install Reader.
There are widely known issues with having Reader and Acrobat on the same Windows system. Adobe recommends you only have one, due to the issues having both cause.

  • Acrobat and Reader Version Issues

    Hi,
I've created a PDF porffolio made up of several PDFs. When I view the PDF portfolio at the "top level" (where you see names of the individual PDFs on top of a window that looks like it should show the first page of the PDF) all it says in the window is "For the best experience, open this PDF porffolio in Acrobat X or Adobe Reader X, or later. However, I have Acrobat XI and am viewing it in Acrobat XI, so why am I having this issue?
I can at least open the PDF portfolio and all the PDFs inside. My girlfriend gets the same window when I try sending it to her and can't open the PDF portfolio at all andl she has Acrobat 11.0.3. Why is this happening to her?
Attached is a screenshot of my issue.
    Thanks.

Yes, I guess I did. So I guess that's the issue. Thanks!
Since you seem to know Acrobat and Reader pretty well, I have two other issues I'm dealing with:
1.) I'd like to create a PDF portfolio of my graphic design work. In the past I've created a PDF portfolio and added other PDFs or jpegs into them with difference pieces of work. However, is it possible to create a portfolio where a multi-page PDF (within the larger portfolio) can be viewed in it's entirety (at the top level of the portfolio) without having to open the file? The idea would be that you would see one page of the portfolio with a piece of work, scroll to the right and see another, then when you get to the multi-page PDF if you kept scrolling right it would just take you through that entire PDF instead of having to open the file. Basically, what I'm trying to avoid is having to create jpegs of individual spreads of an InDesign file so they can be viewed seamlessly in a PDF porfolio instead of being able to drop in a multipage PDF. Let me know if you need clarification on this.
2.) Finally, when I've tried to re-order files within PDFs, I've occassionally had success renaming the files (ie 1.jpg , 2.jpg, 3.jpg, 4.pdf, etc) in the "display name" column under the Files tab. I once had success doing an "Initial Sort" for display name but other times it hasn't worked. Is there anyway to make re-order work consistently?
    Thanks!

  • Acrobat and Reader XI freeze 3 secs after opening (force close needed). Win 8.1. Restart usually removes problem, sometimes repair.

    Please help.
Running Adobe Acrobat and reader XI ( latest versions). PC is Lenovo ThinkPad 440 S. Don't think I've got any plug-ins that are affecting this, but Dragon NaturallySpeaking is installed on PC, and I know this sometimes causes problems with some programs.
I can uninstall and reinstall either of the programs, and sometimes after a day or a week the problem returns. Restarting the computer will usually cause it to disappear for awhile and then it returns. The freeze is always the same, about three seconds after opening a document, it freezes and I have to close the program and restart the computer if I want the program to work again. I've tried switching off the security settings as suggested a number of websites, and this sometimes seems to help, but the problem nevertheless returns. I've got Acrobat on trial, and would like to buy, but I'm not going to do so and as this problem can be solved.
I've tried installing the programs multiple times, both clean install and repair and this doesn't stop the problem from happening, and it's happened over the two latest updates to the programme with no success. Out of interest, I've also noticed it doesn't always save my preferences between opening the program (e.g. page view preferences).
    Many thanks for any input,
    Jason Anderson

    Hi Jason,
I would recommend you to do a selected startup and then enable the programs one by one to isolate which program might be causing this.
Please refer the KB: Restart Windows in a modified mode | Windows 7, Vista for selective startup of Windows.

  • Page Setup / Printing in Adobe Acrobat and Reader

Does anyone know why Adobe Acrobat and Reader don't retain page setup information from one document to the next? I constantly have to switch between two different paper sizes in page setup, because the information isn't retained by the individual documents.

I would suggest creating a second instance of the printer in Windows with tray 2 as the default tray - select that printer from Acrobat.
Control Panel > Add Printer > Create the Printer
Control Panel > Printers > Printer Properties

  • Acrobat and Reader XI getting "stopped working" error message when closing

Every computer running Windows 7 and Reader or Acrobat in our office is having an issue where the Windows error message "Adobe Reader/Acrobat has stopped working" appears as the user is exiting a PDF.   It doesn't happen every time but it happens fairly often and appears to be happening on each of the 5 workstations currently running Windows 7 and either Acrobat or Reader XI.  When trying to move the PDF into another folder after this happens an error message comes up stating that the file is currently open and can't be moved.

    Hey emmaw7542582,
Could you please try installing Adobe Reader DC (the latest version) from the below mentioned link:
Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Install for all version
Then, try opening those PDFs again and see if the same message appears.
If that does not resolve your problem, then please share the screenshot of the error message.
    Hope to get your response.

  • Acrobat and Reader 8.  When trying to print, the memory could not be "read".

A user (without local admin rights) does a batch job from Microstation and exports all of his drawings to pdf.  They open just fine in Acrobat 8 and Reader 8.  When he clicks on the print button, he gets the below error.  When I log in with local admin rights, I can print those exact pdfs just fine.  Below is the error message/event log entry.   Any help would be greatly appreciated.   He's running Windows XP SP3.

Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program

We tested with another non-admin account and Acrobat worked fine.  Therefore the problem was within the user's profile.  We just backed up his data, deleted his old profile and had him log back in.  This created his new profile.  Acrobat worked just fine.

  • Acrobat and Reader Conflicts

I have both Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader installed on my computer.  While I have read countless PDF documents using Reader, I am new to Acrobat.  I purchased it to create forms for my business.
When I attempt to open Acrobat, the Acrobat icon displays in the upper left corner of the workspace, but expected tools on the toolbar of missing--despite checking the "View" Menu to be sure the appropriate selections have been made for the display.  When I checked the "About" (under the "Help" menu), the software informs me that Reader is currently running--NOT Acrobat.
    What's up?
Do I need to unisntall Reader?
Is this an uninstalled/re-install problem for Acrobat?
    Thank you for your help!

    Hi,
Please try making Acrobat as the default program for .pdf files. It should fix the issue for you.

  • Acrobat and Reader just hanging

I am having the exact same problem with Acrobat X, 9 and Reader (all of which have been respectively uninstalled to reinstall the next to see if the issue would stop). I open the software or a pdf file, it opens, the file is displayed and then I just get a spinning wheel for up to an hour.
I've uninstalled, reinstalled, deleted preferences, repaired permissions and every other suggestion that every forum I can find suggested. I have no plugins installed.
The softwares are obviously installed properly or they would never open at all. But even once the file is open and useable, if I close the program and reopen, it hangs again. Seriously, an hour of a spinning pinwheel on any file I attempt to open or even just opening the software from the applications folder.

nevermind- I accidentally had 41,000 fonts activated in FontExplorer

  • Adobe Acrobat and Reader digital signature verification error logs

Can you help me how enable and where Acrobat 9.2 and Reader 9.2.3 error logs to analyse digital signature certificate revacation (CRL, OCSP)?

    Hi Gatis,
Check out the Security and Digital Signature Admin Guide athttp://learn.adobe.com/wiki/download/attachments/52658564/acrobat_reader_security_9x.pdf?v ersion=1
    http://learn.adobe.com/wiki/download/attachments/52658564/acrobat_reader_security_9x.pdf?v ersion=1
Once you get the file open look at section 5.3.4.4
The folder path has to exist, but Acrobat will create the file if it's missing. For example, if you want to save the file to C:\LogFile\digSigLog.txt the folder LogFile would have to exist on the C drive, but the log file itself will get created if it's not there already.
When you type in the file path and name in the Edit Binary Value dialog in regedit, make sure you null terminate the string by typing a zero at the end of the hex data on the left side of the dialog. It will look like a dot on the right side, but it's not really a dot (a dot is 2E in hex).

  • Creating a custom dictionary for Acrobat and Reader.

I want to create a custom dictionary to be used by all of our users when they access a “forms document” through Adobe Reader/Acrobat.
Here are some of the issues:
The default dictionary name under Custom Dictionaries has a .clam extension.
Is there a way to edit this?
Does it contain the index settings for all the other added.txt and excluded.txt dictionary files?
The Reader's default location is under a user’s LocalLow folder.
    C:\Users\PIN\ AppData\LocalLow\Adobe\Linguistics\Dictionaries\Adobe Custom Dictionary.
The Acrobat default location is under the user's Roaming folder.
    C:\Users\PIN\ AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Linguistics\Dictionaries\Adobe Custom Dictionary\.
This is buried under the users profile and we need to be able to update these files on all the user’s workstations prior to log on.
This could be done by redirection of the new custom dictionary. What is the location of that setting in the registry?
Is there is a way to append to the standard dictionary file so as not to replace any setting that a user may have made to the dictionary?
Is this done to the .clam or .txt file outside of the Adobe Reader application?
What is the “All” setting in the dictionary?
Does that imply the program will look through all the dictionaries?
Is there a way to create a new dictionary name that would appear under the preferences\spelling\dictionaries list. Is there an Index file that would point to a newly created Dictionary folder?

Custom dictionaries must be created with a 3rd party program provided by Proximity (http://www.proximitytechnology.com/spell_correction.htm).
The spelling support files are installed in this directory for all users (this is only the default)
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\<product>\Resource\Linguistics\Providers\Proximity
    File types include:
ENV - eg: grmphon.env - the phonetic rule file for the spelling dictionary language. There is one of these “ENV” file for each language.
CLX - eg: grm32.clx - a language related part of spelling dictionary. There is one of these “CLX” file for each language.
LEX - eg: grm104.lex - an actual spelling dictionary. There may be several dictionaries for a given language, for example, grm104.lex, grm10401.lex.
    So the answer is:
Create a custom dictionary with Proximity and use the Wizard or some other method to deploy the files in the correct location.

  • How to open Reader in firefox tab when both acrobat and reader are installed.

I would like to open pdf files in firefox using Adobe Acrobat Reader.
I have both Acrobat Pro or whatever its called and Acrobat Reader installed.
Presently going to firefox's tools, options, then selecting the file types option I cannot select any plugin to open my pdf's besides what's labeled as "adobe acrobat" but which executes an in-tab instance of Adobe Acrobat Pro, despite the ambiguous language on the plugin which I suspect stems from Adobe's evolving and confusing conventions regarding just what Adobe Reader, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Acrobat Reader, and Adobe Acrobat Pro really is.
Anyways, how to make pdfs open in-tab instances of Adobe Acrobat Reader while I have both the Reader and the Pro installed?
Is there a sepperate plugin I need or something? Any way to get the "adobe acrobat plugin" open acrobat reader and not acrobat pro?
    Any help is very Appreciated
I can not find this point explained in any of the documentation adobe supplies

  • PDF form submission problem - works in Acrobat and Reader, but not when embedded in browser

    Hello everyone,
I am trying to submit a PDF form to an application server.
To do this, I added a "Submit" button to the PDF, configured the server's address and submit format, and tested the button.
I opened the PDF in Acrobat Pro, clicked the button, and my web application received the form in PDF format just as I wanted.
To make it work in Reader, I had to extend user rights via Acrobat Pro, and then the form worked inside Reader as well.
Up to here, everything went fine.
Then I embedded the PDF in a web page (which will be the final scenario) and it all stopped working.
The submit button doesn't do anything anymore, and no data is sent to the application server.
I even tried switching from the form's submit mechanism to calling event.target.submitForm(...) in Javascript directly, but nothing changed (meaning this too worked only when opening the form as an "offline" pdf, but not when embedding it in a web page).
Is there something I am missing? Something else that must be configured/activated in order to be able to submit the PDF when it is in the form of an embedded object?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Alex

    Thanks for your reply, Paul.
I tested the submit button both in Reader 9.3 and Acrobat 8 (which is the same I used to RE the PDF).
Apparently I got it working too, but only by deploying my embedding web page to an application server.
The final environment the PDF will be embedded into will be inside a web application deployed to an application server, so I guess my problem is solved.
It didn't work only when embedded into a local test.html web page saved on my PC...
Thanks again, have a good day.

  • Adobe Captivate 5 published as pdf not displaying in certain versions of Adobe Acrobat and Reader

We have an issue where upon publishing files as a pdf in Adobe Captivate 5, they will not open in Adobe Acrobat Pro (9 or 10) or Adobe Reader (11).  However, they will open in Adobe Reader 10.1.4.  I have searched up and down these forums and google, without any solid resolution for this issue.  We are running Windows 7 64-bit machines.  It should be noted, that if we publish as a exe, it works without any issues.  See below for other threads with same issue (but no resolution), and a screenshot.  Thanks!

Try this. Though the solution is for CP6, it might still work for you.

  • Adobe Acrobat and Reader 9.0

How do I create a document in Acrobat that I can then sign in Reader?  Both versions are 9.0.  Thanks for the help!

If you mean a digital signature, the document will have to be Reader-enabled with Acrobat Pro (as opposed to Standard) or LiveCycle Reader Extensions. To Reader-enable a document in Acrobat 9 Pro, select: Advanced > Extend Features in Adobe Reader
You can add a digital signature field to the document by going into form editing mode (Forms > Add or Edit Fields) and using the Digital Signature tool to place it.

  • How to call Reader when both Acrobat and Reader are installed?

In my machine, I have both Acrobat 7.0 Standard and Acrobat Reader 8 installed.
I want to call Reader 8 in my program. But everytime it opens Acrobat 7.0. I use the following code,
    Dim acroApp As Acrobat.CAcroApp
    acroApp = CreateObject("AcroExch.App")
    acroApp.MenuItemExecute("About")
I am new to writing PDF programs. Can anyone tell me how to call Reader 8 by program? (I'm using VB.Net.)

You can use this code with Adobe Acrobat, not Adobe Reader.
Thank you for your reply. Does the library automatically choose application to call? or the library work under Acrobat only?
I tried to run the samples of IAC in Acrobat SDK, but all of them called Adobe Acrobat.
I'm really confused. Could you show me a way to call Reader?
