Color and Kona LHe

Does anyone have any experience with Color and Kona LHe? If grading in 2K will you be able to output a signal to a 1080p monitor to monitor your grade?

Oops, my bad... but its a bit rare to get a pro inquiry here.. but never mind.
If it doesn't say that it will expressly support a format, it probably won't. I guess that's the short answer -- and I'm not seeing any 2K support on the LHe on the link.
So its likely a DPXtoQT translation to get a sort of proxy going, and then you could work in something like ProRes422HQ codec and then translate it back into dpx. If you're in that workflow, then you should also have a native 1920x1200 display at MINIMUM -- with dealing in a proxy, there's already some guesswork going on, and paying customers get nervous about that sort of thing.

RS 422 switch box and Kona LHe card??

Just received and installed this card. I have three decks that use RS 422 control and the Kona card only has one. Is it O.K. to use a switching box to switch between decks for RS 422 control. I have a 4 port RS 422 switch box that I used on an old system and seems like it would work.

Using the switch should be fine, particularly as it worked in your previos set up.

Final Cut 6 and AJA Kona LHe

Ok, so we're upgrading all our edit bays at work to FCP Studio 2.
One of the bays in my dept. is having issues.
We have an AJA Kona LHe that outputs to a BETA SX deck.
Does anyone know if FCP 6 has issues with this card? So far, no combination of settings has made it work.
Ideas?

we did install the new drivers (v4) and it still didn't work. Apparently, the IT guy here is going to call AJA later today. It's good to hear they have great tech support. I feel like noone does anymore.
When we upgraded my bay we had a codec issue and called Apple, they told us to start a new project from scratch.... It's one I've been building for years now. They weren't very helpful.

Down Convert Captures from Z1, with Kona Lhe, and Firewire

Hi Everybody!
Ok here is another question, I am capturing with my Kona LHe,and also with firewire in FCP 6. When capture with my kona I cant get a full screen in the 525i mode? what is the best setting to capture DVCPRO50? for DVD using the Kona? I ran a bunch of test and I could seem to get a full screen capture using the Kona, but only with DVCPRO HD codec. Should I just capture with firewire instead? if so which codec in "Easy Setup"? I am also getting another Cal Duo, that will give me to , to "strip" together for more speed as Caldigit said it will work just fine. I ran some test with different codecs using ProRes 422 settings, also, and the HDV captures, with the sequence settings look real impressive all the way through DVDSP to my Sony HDTV in SD, and also the DVCPRO HD, captured from the KONA, looked fabulous too., Your thoughts and imput are all greatly welcome!

use the SDI DVCPRO50 kona card setting for NTSC if the player has SDI and after capturing it in fcp use compressor to convert as a DVD 30 or 60 etc or use DVD studio pro for authoring and building DVD's ?

Edit to tape with Kona Lhe

At work tomorrow, I have to lay a 59.94 sequence on to a DVCPRO HD deck with no firewire option. So I'm using my Kona Lhe with SDI output and deck control. A couple things to ponder... Audio and Video ARE getting to the deck through the SDI. I am able to crash record with no problem. I am able to black and code the tape. No problem there. I black the tape from 58:30 to shortly past 1 hour, 30 seconds. I set my "In Point" to 59:00, but when I go to assemble record the sequence, the "Insert", "Assemble", and "Preview" drop zones are disabled. We tried an SR deck and the drop zones were working, but when it went to start the edit to tape, it rewound the deck all the way to the beginning of the tape and then sat there. Tried every possible combination of device preferences. I gotta figure this out if I want to work here again. Patrick, I'm looking in your direction.

But...you don't have ASSEMBLE as an option? And you are dragging the sequence from the browser into the EDIT TO TAPE window, right?

Anyone here using Kona LHe card in PCIe G5?

I just ordered a Kona LHe card and look forward to posting my experience with it on my Quad G5. A quick search of the forum didn't bring up much about the new PCI Express LHe version although I'm sure some of you are using it. I'm not immediately interested in the uncompressed workflow, but would like to get the best out of the DVCPro compression support.
Please let me know if there are any major issues with setup, drivers, etc. that might save me some trouble.
FYI, I'm using FCP Studio 5 with mixed DVCProHD 720 24P and DV-50 24P footage most of the time and hope to be able to "pulldown" the 24P footage live on output to tape.

Audio unsynced with video when capturing analog HD with Kona LHe card!

This is kind of an emergency because i am in the process of logging a feature film. I am using the Kona LHe card to capture analog audio and video with the JVC BR-HD50 HDV deck. It is 720p24 HDV footage converted to analog DVCProHD 720p59.94 footage through the Kona. My issue is that the audio is about 4 or 5 seconds unsycned with the video...I am also getting some audio popping. The audio sounds fine when listening through the line mixer but it pops when i play back though FCP. I already contacted AJA (the makers of Kona) and they its a FCP problem...Any prompt help would be greatly appreciated...

Welcome to the forums!
What version of FCP are you running? If you can, get to the most current version as this solves a lot of issues with the DVCPRO HD codec.

AJA Kona LHe with 7.0 driver Freezes display on sleep

Loading the 7.0 drivers causes the display to
freeze the display if the system goes to sleep.
Configuration:
* OS X 10.6 and 10.6.1 Snow Leopard
* Kona LHe board
* 7.0 driver
* Mac Pro
* Intel 2 X 2.66 dual-core xeon processors
Tested by installing a "virgin" 10.6, rebooted,
put the system to sleep. The system successfully
wakes back up multiple times.
Installed the 7.0 drivers:

Rebooted. Put the system to sleep.
Wake it back up (key stroke or mouse)
The display is frozen completely, and displays
only what was on the screen when the machine
went to sleep (the seconds on the time/date
are frozen as of the time the system went

Rebooted in 64-bit mode. The display is still
frozen after waking up from sleep.
The only thing that changed on this virgin 10.6
install was adding the AJA Kona LHe drivers. There
are no other boards in the computer.
Also tried upgrading to 10.6.1. Same results.
So, do you guys have any tips or ideas
I could try to fix this problem and keep
the system from seizing-up when it goes
to sleep?
For now, the workaround is never spinning
down the hard drives and display. Not very
environmentally conscious.

I was having the exact same problem with freezing after waking from sleep mode after I downloaded the Kona Lhe 7.0 driver. My configuration was: OSX 10.6.1; Kona LHe board, 7.0 Lhe Driver; Mac Pro; Intel 2 x 2.66 dual core xeon processors.
So I wiped the drive and did a clean install of Snow Leopard (10.6.1) and FCP (7.01). I installed the Kona Lhe 7.0 NDD driver instead of the Kona Lhe 7.0 Driver, and now the sleep function is working just fine.
I'm not sure if the problem was solved by the Kona NDD update alone, or if it was the combination of the latest FCP 7.01 update plus the Kona NDD update.

AJA Kona LHe LHi Playback not working

I'm running two separate Mac Pros that also have Final Cut Pro 7 using a AJA Kona LHe and LHi. Both share the same issues when previewing with a broadcast monitor.FCP works perfect with the Kona cards.
The video signal seems to drop out during playback and audio drops out as well.
I have the newest drivers for Kona 9.0.3 and using the 8,5 aja adobe plugin for CS5. I didn't want to install the the AJA Adobe CS5.5 plugins in fear of messing things up.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled both the control panel and the plugins with no luck, The editor seems to be fine its mainly the playback in the monitor that's not working right.
Is this a CS5 thing? Will CS5.5 version fix the issues with Kona cards? I'm seriously thinking about moving over to Preimiere but need to know if thgis setup will work.
Any help would be much appreiciated.

Kind of similar. The audio issue is like that. Drops out until I stop playback then restart playback. AJA said to not use kona card but uot put setting instead. That helps but didn't fix it 100% Video playback drops out completely for me with the HDMI out of the LHi. The component out from the LHe works better.
My playback in the program looks good my issue is with external the external monitor playback.

Compatibility G5/AJA Kona LHe

I have a G5, and i bought one AJA Kona LHe... I knew that could be not compatible... Is it true?

Depends on the model of G5 that you have. The LHe is for PCI-Express equipped G5s (the "Late 2005" models) whereas you'd need the LH model if you have an older G5 with PCI-X/PCI slots.

Getting audio using KONA LHE card

Hi,
currently running final cut 5.1.4 on mac pro. we have installed our KONA LHE card and have video from the mac and our sony HDV HVR MI5 deck displaying via the KONA onto our JVC monitorperfectly.
However when we try to connect the Kona audio to our mixing desk we get the sound through from the final cut timeline, but it is unusable, it isnt distorted but it is swamped by noise and intereference.
We have the HVR deck connected to the mixer with no problems, so it isnt a problem with the mixing desk. (Soundcraft Spirit E Series) So could it be a setting of the KONA? pretty sure phantom power was turned off, so hopefully ahvent fried anything!
Would we get any sound through if we had fried the audio part of the card with phantom power?

That's your problem. MIC connections. Not meant for balanced audio, only for MICS. I had the same problem. My first 4 XLR connections on my mixer are MIC inputs. They are designed to be phantom powered and to be HOT (loud), so any balanced audio from a deck or capture card will be too much for the inputs. YOu gotta use non-mic inputs.

KONA LHe improves RT effects?

I am considering a KONA LHe for my Mac Pro. Primarily, I do DVCAM editing -- but occasionally work in 8-bit NTSC and see HDV on the horizon.
I'd appreciate any comments from LHe owners who use it for DV25 editing. Does the card provide any significant performance improvements for this codec -- i.e., better handling of realtime effects?

I just installed a LHe in my Mac Pro. Honestly, I've not had time to really test it, however, for DV25, the Mac Pro does a very good job with RT as it is.
I did look in the effects bin and it looks like perhaps more filters are RT now but I can't say for sure and quite honestly, for DV25, rendering is not a big deal on a Mac Pro.
Where the LHe will be great for you is monitoring and when you start to work with HDV. You can import and directly transcode to a much better editing codec than that POS HDV codec. You can also import analog video through the LHe.

Colour difference between color and FCP

i have edited in FCP doing no colour correction at all then i have sent it to color using the
file send to color option
done my colour correction and sent it back using the
send to final cut pro option
no i am really happy with the colours in color using pri in, sec in, colorFX and pri out, rendered it all but when i send it back to FCP everything is redder well pinkish then what it looks like in color
am i doing something wrong at all
i have tried to adjust the amount of red in color then render and send back but it still looks the same.
im lost can anyone please help

Yes, you are doing something incredibly wrong. This non-issue is rearing it's ugly head so much it's nauseating. What you are seeing is the display differences between Color and Final Cut Pro. Do a search on all the Color forums and you'll find a host of very similar threads to yours.
The solution is to use a real input/output device like an Aja Kona or Blackmagic Decklink card and send the video signal to a production monitor. Those of us using this infrastructure see none of this non-issue that other users who are relying upon their highly inaccurate computer displays are seeing.
You are at a disadvantage however as there is currently no accurate way to get external monitoring capabilities out of an iMac as it is woefully lacking in expansion capabilities.

I have lost the ability to change fonts,use color and size and when I try to write anyone,I cannot see my mailing list and there is no send button.

A few months ago my ability to use different fonts, colors and sizes suddenly disappeared. These choices were always available when looking at my email and I used them regularly . No one I asked ever heard of such a thing happening. I left it alone until I found someone to help. Then, a few days ago, when I clicked "write" , two things happened. First, I could not forward, reply or even see my collected email addresses. Second, there was no longer a place that said "send". My email page filled the entire screen and when I scaled it down, there was still no way to see my list or to send. I am a novice when it comes to fixes and terms but, I have asked people who have some experience with PC's they were stumped. I contacted Fairpoint and they said it must be a Thunderbird problem. Most of the people I asked said they didn't know Thunderbird. One suggested that I reinstall T.bird but, said I also might lose everything on my PC. I would appreciate any help you can give. A friend gave me a USB card that says 3D Sound on top; it is a plastic case, charcoal gray in color and side jacks to connect headphone and mic. Connected to computer but it does not do a thing. Any ideas on how to make it work?

You are not supposed to connect a pair of speakers(as in left and right in a stereo pair)to two separate out jacks on the sound card.the place on the card where headphones/speakers with the mini jack goes is the right place.
