Color and RAW Issues

As I mentioned in this thread, I have been having a number of issues with my libraries.
While analyzing photos in my libraries, I discovered that I haven't been as consistent with my profiles as I thought. Many have camera RGB, some have Adobe RGB (mainly ones that were edited in Photoshop), some with sRGB, and many have no profile.
Since I have a long road ahead of me anyway in getting my photos properly recovered and organized, I also want to make sure that I have a consistent color workflow. I have a decent knowledge of profiles and how they work, but I am not certain that I correctly understand the way profiles are being assigned in iPhoto and with my camera.
First off, I am working only with JPEGs here. My Canon G2 is on the supported list, but iPhoto won't import RAW images from it for some reason. It won't even import the RAW photos that I download first via Image Capture. Preview and Photoshop also won't display them. I would like to shoot RAW occasionally, but I have no way to view them, other than the thumbnail preview in the Finder.
The only profile I am able to set from within iPhoto is Camera RGB. Selecting another profile (eg Adobe RGB) in ColorSync Utility has no effect. iPhoto still uses the factory default. The only way I can set it to a different profile is to import with Image Capture.
I understand the value of working in Adobe RGB (or a profile with an even larger gamut), but I question if using anything other than Camera RGB is an option for me. When I use Adobe RGB via IC, I get overly saturated colors. This doesn't look to me like it is simply showing colors that would otherwise be clipped by the smaller profile. Rather, it looks to me like it is mapping color values out to the limits of the larger gamut in an exaggerated way.
I question if the color space used in my G2 is too small for Adobe RGB. I find this hard to believe, but I can't think of another explanation.
In summary,
Why can't I open raw images?
Why can't I assign a different profile than Camera RGB in iPhoto?
Why can't I properly use a larger-gamut profile than Camera RGB?
Does iPhoto 6 really handle color management accurately?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi there!
I am now developing my raw files with Olympus Viewer. It is the only software solution that would deliver results close or identical to Olymus built in JPEG engine. Most of the time I need to get color reproduction that is as subtle and fine as the Olympus engine, but I do want to benefit from all the other postprocessing advantages that RAW has to offer.
Within Aperture I have not been able to get comparable color rendering.

  • RDS 2012 R2 - Colors and appearance issues

    Hi,
    We are experiencing an annoying issue with Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard (RDS installed and two RemoteApp applications published). The thing is, sometimes, colors of taskbar, folders, screens...completely turn to black. You can run applications, open files...but
    the appearance (colors) is completely screwed up. We don't know what to do about this. We restore the entire server (Virtual Machine) when this issue occurs. Anyone knows about this ?

    I'm back again. My issue seems to be the same as this one : http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/44f33bd6-aa45-48cb-b886-352330e3f47c/win2012-std-basic-theme-problem-?forum=winserver8gen
    I figured out that my gpo did not work because the parameter "Load a specific theme" works only for users who open a session on the RDS server for the first time. So, i did this to apply the theme GPO to all RDS users, even if they have old sessions
    on the server :
    - I deleted all users profiles (from computer's advanced settings). Do not delete admins and .NET profiles.
    - I ran a gpupdate /force
    - I opened a session with a Remote Desktop user, and the Aero theme was perfectly applied.
    This is just a bypass solution. A good one is to know how the "Basic theme" got corrupted, and then, find a solution to fix it. For now, i really don't know how this could happened...
    For your information, before doing this, you have to install "Desktop experience" on RDS server and create the GPO which apply "Aero theme" for all RD users. This is the procedure to create it : http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/a11255a7-98d8-497d-812d-2e9f936a0901/how-to-change-the-desktop-theme-for-all-users?forum=windowsserver2008r2general

  • Odd Issue Editing in Photoshop with color and lens corrections

    First off, I'm on LR 4.4 and PS CS6 (Camera Raw 7.4.0.137) using ProPhoto RGB as my LR colorspace and have my PS color settings as Working Space: ProPhoto RGB and my color management policies to preserve embedded profiles.
    When I right click on a DNG in LR and choose "Edit in Photoshop", LR sends it to PS and PS does its "Reading in Camera Raw Format" and opens the image.  However, the colors are off (very muted) and any lens corrections I've applied in LR are missing.  My monitor (iMac on OSX 10.8) is calibrated with a Spyder.  I've also noticed that if I choose to edit in another application, it renders the tiff fine and the color and lens corrections are correct in the tiff.
    Anyone have any ideas what my issue is?
    Thanks,
    Matt
    ETA: After some experimenting, it seems that the "Adobe Standard" profile is what gets sent to Photoshop.  The rest (Camera Landscape, Portrait, etc.) are ignored. What's going on here?

    Sounds like you need to reset your warning dialog. Preferences>General>Prompts [Reset all warning dialogs]
    Then try it again and make certain of the three choices you are Editing a Copy with Lightroom Adjustments.

  • Dual display color and other related issues...

    I have posted this on painter forums, though some of the issues coming together here are directly related to issues w/ Snow Leopard and dual displays. Thought I would try here....
    This is so bizarre. When I ever I run P11(I think this is going on in P10 too?) w/ the OS X (snow leopard, 10.6.2 on quad core Intel Xeon Mac Pro, 10 GB of RAM) menu bar on my Eizo(making it the main display), and the Apple Cinema display left as the #2 monitor, I get very annoying brush cursor artifcats left randomly on the Eizo screen after strokes. One cannot predict when the cursor will leave it's gray "marks", but it will do it, sometimes 5 strokes in a row, sometimes after 15 strokes or so? If I move my brush back over them, or change the image percantage view, they vanish, obviously new ones coming back, as I work.
    However I put the OS menu bar on the AC display, yet work back on the Eizo, this does NOT happen. No cursor artifacts. Well, at least I can summon the issue
    The reason I am doing this is Snow Leopard has bad color issues w/ dual displays (well documented, much to Photoshop CS4 users frustrations, and mine). Apple needs to fix it... but for me to see the right color on the Eizo(this is my main color and superior display), it needs to be the main monitor(menu bar) in 10.6.2.
    So, you can see my trap - Accurate color, or annoying cursor artifacts left on the screen (sorry, it really bugs me as I work) as I work in Painter.
    Attempted fixes: Trashed all of Painter's prefs, all of Wacom's Intuos 4(latest driver) prefs and software, switched plug ins on the back of the mac for the displays(lots of restarts), ran cache cleaning Cocktail and DiskWarrior, etc. -- no change, as I can duplicate the issue w/ the above set up. A sidebar or maybe be very related note: I have an iMac w/ max amount of ram (model not very old -- maybe 1 or 2 old) and I have had a long standing issue working on the iMacs we have had w/ this brush cursor artifact problem (in Leopard and Snow Leopard). I am on one monitor w/ the iMac, so you know here the menu bar is...hmmmmmmmm.....?
    Thanks!, T

  • Slight Color and Quality Shift when viewing RAW files for first time in Library Module.

    Hello,
    I have been shooting RAW for a while and have notice that after I import the images and then start to view them in the Library Module I will see a slight color and quality shift - almost looks like a white balance shift but not quite.   I was thinking that perhaps there was some automatic preset being applied but I don't have any presets at all.
    I am shooting with a Canon 1DX as well as 7D.  I have not checked to see if I get this situation with the 7D, but I know for sure that I get it with the 1DX.
    Today I was reviewing some images in Bridge and decided to open one of them in Camera RAW.   At that time I discovered that the camera's Image Style Settings were available, Faithful, Standard, Portrait, etc.  I noticed that the images did not have one of the camera styles applied to them but rather the Adobe Standard Style. At that point from within RAW I selected one of the camera's styles and bingo thats the kind of shift I am seeing when I first view an image in LR4 Library.
    So as far as I can tell the RAW images are getting the Adobe Standard style applied in LR.   I have no idea if this is a default behavior of if I have done something to cause it.  I'm also thinking that perhaps LR does not necessarily apply the Camera's Styles automatically even though the particular style has been set in the camera -- perhaps is not imported as part of the metadata during the import and thus defaults to the Adobe Standard.
    I guess what I need to know is a few things and I hope someone can educate this newbie!
    1. Should I expect LR4 to apply the Style as set from the camera automatically or not at all?
    2. Can I prevent LR from applying the Adobe Standard Style and apply no style?
    3. Can I cause LR to apply the Style as set in the camera for the particular image to be appied automatically upon import?
    Thank you for any guidenace you can offer.  Of course if you need additional information or clarification please let me know.
    Scott

    That sort of describes it and may be exactly what is happening.  I have a shoot tonight and will pay closer attention to the process and behavior when I import.
    It is the full image that I see the shift on though.  Its not that the thumbnail and the full size image look different.  It the full size image looking one way and then shifting in front of my eyes.
    What is frustrating is that I typically find that the image before the shift is better than what appears after the shift, so I find myself always chasing to get back to where it was and because its gone I'm chasing an invisible ideal, so to speak.   Ahhh...isnt that the life of a photographer though!
    It seems like its the last step in the render process -- if I could just figure out what it is and stop it I could finally figure out if I really care or not.  Its just so quick its tough to tell if indeed the first appearance is better.
    I'll feedback some more information when I get a better handle on this.
    Thanks for the reference.

  • Issues: NetBeans View Colors, and All Tasks, Sort by Start Time

    2 Odd Issues - I'm hoping I can get some help with.
    When I look up (checkout) a User View in NetBeans, it displays in the lower window view, as
    White text on White background - making it Invisible [ I can only see the content, if I highlight it ]
    The columns are from L to R: Object/Attr, Name, Value, XML
    Nothing looks out of place, as I've checked under Tools | Options | Fonts and Colors
    and those are set to standard black fg and white bg
    not sure why the view got messed up
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I have a client with the All Tasks, Sort by Start Time
    not functioning correctly. In fact, it's sorting quite randomly, despite clicking the column header.
    Wondered what could be the issue here ?
    It is set up as 2 different servers behind a Load Balancer, but still, How could anything cause this ?
    I don't believe anything has to be configured to build in the functionality of sort by 'Start Time'
    Any Suggestions ? TIA for your help.
    camera raw 8.7 color and contrast shifts when file opened in ps 6
    Thanks ssprengel for the suggestions and running a side by side yourself. I went through all my settings and applied your suggestions and did a side by side each time. I even uninstalled the entire creative suite on my system then reinstalled and updated and I still get the same outcome. It was fine yesterday with the previous version of ACR. It seems like the updated version is not showing the image preview in any color space. When I switch the color space in the workflow options the histogram changes but it doesn't seem to affect the preview window. And yes the preview button was checked on it was just when I was using the screen grab tool in windows it took focus away from the application so that is why the settings appear grayed out. I have attached more screen grabs below illustrating all my settings. Also here is some system info if anyone out there has a similar setup and would be willing to test.
  • D300 and RAW color in Aperture 2
    I just got my new D300, and ran it through its first shoot Saturday. When I went to import into Aperture 2, the processed files were nasty washed versions of their NEF parents. I opened Capture NX and all of the color was there in the NEF file. I opened Lightroom, and everything looked fine, rich saturated images. In Aperture the color was all washed out.
    The only thing I can think of is that Aperture is running in a different color space than sRGB, and whatever the color space that the program is working in is washing the NEF files color away. But I couldn't find a menu setting for color space, so I don't know if that's true. Or the program imposes limits on crazy color saturation (no program should ever do this).
    Any ideas? Anyone else experiencing this? I finished the job in Lightroom without a problem (great color tools, I was genuinely impressed), so I'm wondering if my Aperture days are numbered.
    I am having exactly the opposite problem here and it is most confusing!
    I normally shoot RAW and I had been planning to use Aperture as my RAW conversion tool of choice when I noticed that Aperture does not deal properly with Chromatic Aberration on files from my Nikon D300. (I posted on this on the forum and it was interesting that we did not hear back from Appple on this).
    So today I shot JPEG's for a quick edit to file to the client tonight and all the images are over saturated! I pulled up the same file on the same screen in Photoshop, put them side by side and the image looks fine in PS and rubbish in Aperture! I checked the image in Capture NX and also in Preview - all the colour match apart from in Aperture. What is going on? Aperture seems to have no colour management option as part of its workflow. I have checked the "preferences" and there is nothing there - I have no control over my image! Its a shocker! What do I do?
    Again, if Apple are really planning to pitch this software at the pro market, they need to do some serious work on their colour management and RAW conversion. These are the bedrock of pro shooting these days and with out them, Aperture is just another archiving software. I have not tried Lightroom, but I wonder if this will fare any better?
  • Colors of RAW vs JPG in Lightroom and CS3
    I am confused by this.
    When shooting RAW +JPG on my Canon 350D, the RAW and JPG have different color qualities. The RAW is more yellow, or maybe warmer. The JPG more blue or cooler.
    I think this is odd. And it is consistent in Lightroom AND CS3 and yet in Irfanview and Canon Digital Photo Professional they they are identical. Totally.
    Why would this be? And which is "right" in Lightroom? The RAW? It looks the better of the two, but hard to compare across programs. But why the difference and why not in all programs, just ADOBE?
    Thanks.
    ~Bob
    DPP uses the in camera settings as its starting point to view RAW files, so these files will appear identical to any jpegs produced at the same time. The in camera settings are attached to the RAW file and DPP reads this information when opening or loading a RAW file for the first time.
    Lightroom does not have access to this information and so it has its own starting point that it uses when you open a RAW file, thus the RAW file will look different than the JPEG and different to the RAW file opened in DPP (while the JPEG and RAW file in DPP will look the same). Most other RAW programs do not have access to this information (Capture 1, Bibble etc) and they also will have a starting point that is different to DPP. One of the significant advantages of Lightroom over DPP is that you can create your own profiles so you can tailor your "starting point" to suit your preferences and style whereas with DPP you always start where the Canon guy says you should be.
    There are a few programs that use the Canon SDK or Canon RAW viewer utility in windows to display images (Breeze Browser comes to mind). Irfranview may be one of these which is why RAW files viewed here may look te same as DPP or the JPEG.
    As to which is right. Neither, none or all of them. Right or wrong is purely subjective and based on which you prefer. If you never make any changes to the RAW file you may as well just shoot jpegs and that will be right for you. But then you loose thae ability to influence the look of your files proior to the file creation which is why we shoot RAW in the first place.
    Hope this helps
  • Help me solve color and dark print issue with a new monitor recommendation!
    I know, I hate "surveys" too. I'm thinking of attacking my color and dark printing issues w\LR and CS4, by investing in a new monitor. I currently have an 20' early edition Apple Cinema Display. The monitor is the last hardware (software) item in my current upgrade cycle. From those folks who are NOT having color or print problems, what displays are you using (or would recommend)? Ah, and price is an issue. Apologies in advance to those who think this is not appropriate use of the Forum.
    Monitor calibration is the first port of call. Sometimes changing one item in a system is enough to show up a colour management issue. You suggest that the monitor is the last item in your upgrade cycle, what all have you changed? Computer, printer? There may also be a setting you have failed to set when you installed the new software, eg. have you remembered to set relative colorimetric with the black point compensation box ticked, disable colour management in your printer driver and put an appropriate colour profile for your monitor onto the new computer? You also need the correct profile for your printer/paper combination set up in Photoshop.
    If you haven't calibrated your monitor, that on its own will give you poor prints, but all the other bits are needed also.
  • Colors differences between jpg and raw - Lightroom 4.1
    Dear All,
    I have a doubt on colors and monitor profile. I am using an imac with monitor calibrated with Spyder pro3 and shoot photos with a Canon 500D (RAW+JPG).
    I recently added a cir polarized filter to my camera, and really satisfied of colors I see in the camera screen, and the same colors I see on my imac when I look at jpg files. Unfortunately when I open photos on Lightroom 4.1, colors seems the same while loading the picture (probably reading the jpg) but than suddenly changes when rendering the preview and in develop module. Colors seems less vivid like missing some contrast (in attachment an example of the same file opened with lightroom and apple preview in raw and jpg).
    I know that jpg created by camera are different from raw files, but actually never had such a difference in colors with all other photos I shoot before. Is this because of the filter or do I have to set anything in particular in lightroom, such as monitor profile or others?
    Thank you for your kind advices, have a nice day,
    dk
  • Adobe Color aka Kuler download and viewing issues
    Ive been trying to utilize the new adobe color and I'm finding that once I find a palette I like, I try to download it and when I try to view it, the file type is un supported in all of the CC apps I have including photoshop, Illustrator and after effects Does anyone know how to use them once their downloaded or at least how to view them so they can be used?
    You don't need to download the ase file from color.adobe.com to view it in photoshop / Illustrator / After Effects / InDesign / Flash.   These products have  "Color Themes" panel  at
    Windows > Extensions > Adobe Color Themes
    or
    Windows > Color Themes
    Simply  favorite a theme on color.adobe.com and it would show up in this panel.  From here you can use them directly in your designs.
    Let me know if that works out for you.
  • Why does the color and or tone of my image change?
    Why does the color and or tone of my image change after working in LR for a couple of hours? I open LR and everything looks fine - work for a couple of hours on the same shoot - but then the pictures start to look flat or greenish cast as time goes by. All the files get flat and the greenish cast after a couple of hours - the ones already worked on and the newer ones I'm pulling up to work on. RAW files downloaded from a Canon 30D. Also exporting to PSCS2 as PROPhoto results in a flat image. I switched back to export AdobeRGB.
    Hola - thanks for the reply - yep - closing and then opening LR helps - but can't do that all the time after processing 3 or 4 files.
    One reply was a corrupt monitor color profile - So I deleted that one and loaded a new adobeRGB profile. That helped a little also for a while - I then reloaded my monitor drivers and refreshed them - that help for a day - the greenish cast is back It works fine on my laptop for now. The same pictures that look greenish in LR look great in Canon DPP. So it probably wasn't the color profile or monitor drivers. My issue started with the small scale previews so I bumped that up. Still have the issue. I finished up a project and now going to uninstall and reinstall LR. Let's see what happens with a fresh install. andy.
  • Canon Powershot S50 and iPhoto issues
    After doing some major searching of the discussion pages I am posting in order to get some help with my Canon S50 and iPhoto 5.0.4 (263).
    When importing into iPhoto or from Canon's image viewer or from the card reader built into my printer (HP photosmart 7760) I have problems.
    When using iPhoto to import I get an error message telling me that iPhoto can't read the files because they are either corrupt or in a format it can't read
    Using the card reader or image viewer, I can get the files onto the computer, and can view previews of the files, which look fine. However when I try to open them in preview or any other software the photos are distorted and color "bars" cover the photos.
  • AMD FireGL GPU + Creative Cloud app = Color Depth & other Issues
    Hello,  I am writing this post to help anyone who may have ran into the same issues I am seeing with my AMD FireGL graphics adapter when using the Adobe Creative Cloud app on a windows 7 PC.
    I ran into a problem installing and setting up the Creative Cloud app on my new workstation that has an AMD FireGL graphics processor.
    First off, the system is new (dell precision m4800, with an AMD FireGL V M5100 GPU), and has all the most current drivers and updates available.. that is to say, this is not a hardware issue.
    The system operates just fine outside of the Creative Cloud app, but when I installed and attempted to login to Creative Cloud for access to download Illustrator, etc., the Creative Cloud app would open up and then only display a blank white page.  No graphics, no data, just white.
    When I got stuck at this point I called Adobe support and spoke to a rep who had seen the issue before. The rep worked around the blank white page in CC by loading the windows device manager and manually disabling the AMD FireGL GPU device to re-install and login to the Creative Cloud app.   This temporarily forced windows to use the default/dummy VGA graphics driver supplied with windows.   With windows using the dummy 256-color vga driver we were able to get the creative cloud app running and get me logged in to install my design software. HOORAY!--or so I thought....
      At this point I assumed the issue was resolved, but I found that there was a new issue popping up every time I rebooted my system.  Windows would load and log me in using the 32bit color depth setting, but as soon as the Adobe Creative Cloud app started up, my color mode would switch to 256 colors... D`oh!
    Obviously I don't want to run at only 256 colors, and neither should you!  Adobe, why does my color depth change to 256 colors every time the Creative Cloud app is loaded?
    If you want to temporarily reset the color depth to 32bit, you can go to Control Panel -> Display -> Adjust Resolution -> Advanced Settings -> Monitor Tab -> & select "True Color (32bit)" from the Colors drop-down menu.    Using this method will allow Adobe Creative Cloud app to continue running 24/7, however this is only a temporary fix, which will need to be applied every time the system is rebooted, or any time a user logs off then back in.. Frankly, its a bit of a PITA, so why bother?
    The permanent fix is simple.. go to Start -> & do a Search for "msconfig".   Once found, run the msconfig utility and switch to the "Startup" tab, where you will be presented with a list of boot time startup items.  Find the one labeled "Adobe Creative Cloud" and disable it by removing the check mark from the corresponding check box.   Then click OK.  You will be warned that a restart may be required.. go ahead and re-start.   This time, when the system boots, Adobe Creative Cloud will not load, and your color depth will remain at 32bit.  YAY!
    If need be you can always load up Creative Cloud manually from the start menu if you need it, but it will knock your color depth back to 256 colors.  Thus far i have had zero issues using adobe photoshop or illustrator without first loading the Creative Cloud app, so it isn't required.  If i need updates or need to access other features within the Creative Cloud app i can, but it doesnt need to run 24/7 to use other adobe apps.
    The short explanation is that Adobe is failing to fully and properly support the AMD FireGL graphics platform.  The adobe rep i spoke to essentially said the same thing, but made certain to blame the graphics device and not adobe software--sure thing boss.   The truth is that the FireGL and its varients have been on the market as long or longer than the nvidia products that are supported fully by adobe.
    It is clear that Adobe has made a choice not to fully support AMD Workstation graphics (FireGL) since not only is the Creative Cloud app broken and causing problems, but also no graphics acceleration features work in any of my installed adobe apps.. I basically get a message saying "please us a supported graphics processor".  Seriously, how is FireGL not "Supported"?
    I am not an AMD or FireGL fanboy.. Frankly I cant stand AMD graphics adapters and I genuinely prefer nVidia on my personal systems.  At home, my 5 year old $100 nVidia gaming card is fully supported in all the adobe apps..
    At work, however, I have no choice what hardware is provided to me and this lack of FireGL support has negatively impacted my productivity more than once.  Admittedly, nvidia has much more market share than AMD in the workstation graphics realm, but that does not mean adobe should just ignore AMD completely!
    Hopefully this post will shed some light on issues with Adobe Creative Cloud app and FireGL graphics cards that others may be experiencing.
    Good Luck!
    Minor correction...  I called my GPU the FireGL, which is the old market name..  The current, proper market name is FirePro.. same line, just new branding after AMD purchased ATI.
