Color assistance needed for commercial printer

Hi there,
We're a board game publisher about to send our first game to an overseas manufacturer. The game is composed of hundreds of cards with detailed, fantasy art, and we're excited to get this game finally out the door.
We sent the raw, packaged indesign (CS6) files to a local printer to see how everything would look before we have 3,000 copies of the game made overseas. The local printer used the same process that the overseas printer will, a 4 color high-end printer that is certainly impressive to people new to the industry such as ourselves. The sample cards they printed came out with fantastic clarity, but the colors are very muted. It's not a subtle change in color like I might see when toggling RGB to CMYK in photoshop for example. Instead, the colors on the print out look like someone slid a color saturation slider on the entire indesign file down by 25%.
When we print on our low-end inket at the office, the resolution is obviously poor, but the colors look great and match our calibrated monitors. When we export to PDF using "Press Quality", everything looks perfect on multiple computers here and at other locations away from the office. It's only the most important step, printing on a full-blown, commercial printer that the colors look so muted.
Here are some crude photos I took on my phone to help show the difference.
These photos have our office, inkjet printer cards are more colorful and the high-quality commercial printer cards are muted (sorry for the strange alignment, this forum is rotating the images for some reason):

Different cards here:

I've researched about swatches and color profiles, but all my experimenting hasn't produced any difference on my end. Therein lies the challenge, as I cannot duplicate the problem here at the office. The colors look great in indesign, great in exported PDFs, and great on our inkjet printed cards. Only when we pay a decent amount of money to the local commercial printer do we get these muted colors in our samples. And the local printer says their setup is exactly the same as our overseas manufacturer, which is terrifying. We've spent 17 months agonizing over all the details of the look of our cards for aesthetic purposes and game play so that players can quickly identify each card type by color. These muted colors will really mess the game up. We're pulling our hair out over here.
The local printer has offered to provide a color correction service for us, but at $100 an hour, that sounds like a lot for a new business like ours.
Is there some setting inside indesign that we are missing? Is there a way to replicate the muted colors on our end so we can at least troubleshoot this? Is there a method to turn up the saturation, if you will, for 4 color printing? Should we bite the bullet and pay the local printer an arm and a leg to color correct this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Tom
P.S. Also, if it helps, when we had the local printer digitally print a sample, everything looked far too dark, which they said was a side effect of the digital print process.

Thanks for the response, Rob.
We talked with a local printer as they assured us that their setup was the same standard that the overseas printer uses. They said the sample sheet they printed for us had marks on the edges. Supposedly, once we had everything matching up right with the local printer, we could mail the printed sheet here to the overseas printer and their system would put in the sheet with its colors on the edges and know exactly what we wanted. Heck, if I know. I'm picking this up as I go along.
By your post, it sounds like we have introduced an unnecessary variable (this local printer) and should just cut them out of the process and deal directly with the overseas printer. The challenge is that the next step is for them to make a sample game for us, and at $1,000 a sample game, it's going to get crazy expensive if we have to go through several samples. I'll see if they can just run a single sheet of cards as a test run like you suggested.
If the overseas printer sheet or sample game comes up with the muted color problem still, what steps happen next. I ask because I'm used to solving the issues and don't understand how to solve this one if it comes up again. Do I just tell them to "make it more vibrant" and they work their magic as professional printers, or is the expectation that I'm to go through each of our many illustrations and graphic designs and over-saturate them myself? I suppose we can cross that bridge when we get to it. It's just hard to work for 18 months on this game getting everything just right and now see this color issue that is out my hands that I cannot solve.
For color space, I think I understand you. Most of our art is RGB.Our Proof Setup is "CMYK - US SWOP v2".
Thanks again for the information.

When I use my Color LaserJet 2605dn for wireless printing, it keeps printing the first page over & over again.  I have to cancel print job on the printer in order to stop it.   It works properly on the computer that is directly wired to it, but won't on any other computer that I try to print from.   I have had this problem for some time, but now have certain thing that I must print from this printer & can't do it wirelessly.  It doesn't seem to be my network, because I can print from all of the other computers onto other wireless printers I have in the office.

  • Using system fonts for commercial printing?

    Hi,
Does anyone know the licensing rights/usage for using system fonts for commercial printing? If I understand correctly, system fonts that comes from operating system CAN be use because Apple purchase the rights on them and end users that purchase OS can use these fonts freely as long as not we are not redistributing them for profit, etc.
Can anyone point me in the right direction with official documentation on the subject?
    Thanks!

Never mind, I found the answer. It's in Apple's OS EULA.
"E. Fonts. Subject to the terms and conditions of this License, you may use the fonts included
with the Apple Software to display and print content while running the Apple Software; however,
you may only embed fonts in content if that is permitted by the embedding restrictions
accompanying the font in question. These embedding restrictions can be found in the Font
    Book/Preview/Show Font Info panel."

  • Need advice on Pages for commercially printed publications.

Here is my situation. I have created a publication (a buy/sell classified magazine) using Pages.
Pages was recommended to me as opposed to Indesign or Quark as it has some great placeholder options for text and photos and would set up nicely as an easy template. So I spent 100s of hours setting up this document and getting it perfect and then off to the printer we go!
Firstly I should mention we are using cold set printing for those who are familiar with it... anyhoo... publication came back with VERY dark photos and even the text was not crisp.
Has anyone had cold set printing done from a publication or document done in Pages? Is the problem with the conversion to PDF? Any suggestions to fix the problem? Is lightening the pictures significantly going to work?
Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

Have you asked your printer about how they handle PDFs? Or, for that matter, what they thought went wrong with the file you sent them? As far as I know, there is nothing special about the PDF output of Pages, and any printer that can utilize PDFs properly should be able to use Pages output (at least as far as the text is concerned -- images may very well take some tweaking). This sounds like a matter you should address directly with your printer -- if they are any good, they should be willing to discuss this with you.
For the most part the commercial printing we've done from Pages was for digitally printed jobs, since we generally don't do large runs (1000+), but I have never had any problem with our printer services handling the PDF or producing less than acceptable results.

This is my first time using InDesign to make something and I have never had an issue like this.
Stands to reason that you never had an issue like that.
Exporting to PDF requires you to choose an output profile. The "High Quality" PDF export is only a starting point. When you export a PDF you can choose to have "No colour conversion" which will give you the same values as your inDesign file.
But you should probably choose an output profile that matches your printer.
If you output to a specific output profile then the colours will Change. You can avoid this by choosing "Convert to Destination (Preserve Numbers).
This is all available in the File>Export>PDF (Print) and in the Output section of the dialog box.
And to add to that - if you think that you'll get this colour printed by a professional printers to match, then you need to send them a sample of the colour you are looking for that is printed from you and ask them to match that.

  • Setting up for commercial printing

I use Illustrator as my layout program for cards, which include text and photos.
I need to set up a job with a "clear foil" for printing. My contact's email says:
"will  be printed on matt paper and then add clear foil to the photo area" "we  ask that you provide the clear foil as a layered file"
This job has a very tight deadline and no time to discuss with the printer ahead of time.
Can someone help and explain how this needs to be set up?

It sounds like you're talking about the project being foil-stamped using a clear foil. If so, the printer simply needs to be able to print a solid image in the shape of the foil stamp.
That is customarily accomplished by using a spot color to fill the paths which will define the shape of the foil stamp. For example, you can simply define a Spot Color Swatch named "ClearFoil", draw the shapes that will be foil stamped, apply that Swatch to those objects, and set their fills to overprint.
Although it is a commonly-used organizational convenience to put those object(s) on a separate layer, it is not strictly necessary to do so. (This seems to be a recurring misconception in this forum lately that Layers are somehow linked to color separation.) What matters is which objects print to individual color separations (inks). That has nothing to do with which Layers those objects are on.
But in the case of things like foil stamps, varnishes, or die-cuts, it is usually sensible and convenient to put those objects on their own named Layer. (For example, name the Layer "Foil Stamp".) That's just a clear way to communicate the purpose, and it also makes it easy for the recipient to just turn on/off visibility of that layer when viewing the underlying artwork.

  • Help needed for wireless printing.

    Hi
I have tried to set up my printer via the USB connection on the TC and the printer shows up in the Airport Utility, but won't print. When I run network diagnostics, it shows that everything works OK and then the server goes from green to red.
The odd thing is that the printer then prints ' Internal error- incomplete session by time out'.
When I go through the diagnostics I get the following. message. NetworkDiagnostics was able to connect to the internet but not to the server "Samsung SCX-4500 Series.riousbprint.tcp.local
Can anyone suggest a way to get the printer working.
I am new to Mac's and networking so an 'idiots guide' type fix would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

When I go in to do a design with a customer, I make sure I understand the devices that need to use the wireless.  Some things you already know about (the usual wireless devices).  Devices that might impact business, you need the customer to provide info on that device or a contact for that device.  This way you can make sure their requirements are meet.  It doesn't really matter what AP's you use as long as you know what you need to configure to make things work.
I would go with a WLC 5508 and the 3500i (internal antenna).  This WLC has various options for license and depending on how many AP's you need, you can satifiy that with a base license or adding license if you add more later.  YOu can also look at the 1142 AP's, but the 3500 will provide you with the capability of doing CleanAir.

  • Class-Path assistance needed for jars

I'm having trouble with my Jar files. I have all the classes associated w/ the project in jar files in a lib directed. I then jar that directory w/ the main class file along with some extra directories (images etc). When I run the jar file created using the -jar switch...it states that it can't find a file that is inside the jar file itself. It will work if I have the directories and the files un-jar'ed in the same directory as the jar however I'm hoping that I dont' have to do that.
    Below is my manifest file:
    Main-Class: btCommander
    Class-Path: lib\namespace.jar lib\relaxngDatatype.jar lib\jaxb-libs.jar lib\jaxb-api.jar lib\jaxb-impl.jar lib\classbox.jar
(i do have a carriage return after the last jar file in classpath).
When i jar the files (using either Ant or jar.exe) it packs the files however it doesn't allow me to execute the jar alone.
    Any help will be appreciated.

  • Fonts appear in color when emailing to a commercial printer

I prepared a newsletter in Pages'09 with color photographs. I sent it as a PDF file to a commercial printer for printing hardcopy. I never changed the default on the text. Below is the response I received from the commercial printer.
When I open the file and convert it to cymk, the type is in 4 color also. See in your file if you can color all they type black only. In most programs on PC's the default black is in a combination of color.
You might have to make a new spot color black so that the type will separate as black only on my side.
Is there an easy way to make this fix???

    Hi emquad46
    Welcome to the forum.
+Menu > View > Show Colors > click on 2nd tab (sliders) > Grey Scale Slider > left most swatch is 100% black > drag that down to the samples grid below+
Click in the text and *Select All* +(command a),+ then click on the black swatch.
Resave any Styles you have used to make sure this is now the default color.
Pages is not ideal for commercial printing as you have found out. Too much of this is manual and/or hidden from you.

  • Just starting out in Illustrator, assistance needed!

    Hi everyone!
Okay, I'm a long time Photoshop user, first time Illustrator user.
Story: My Mum and I are tag-teaming in designing a logo for a company which sells organic beauty products. Mum is a graphic designer from way back...the kind who made their living long before computers were ever used for the job. She has designed a great logo, while I'm doing the computer side of things (i.e. everything else).
So naturally, I have some questions, and I'm hoping there's someone out there who could guide me in this.
I have discovered that commercial printers want work in Vector files, which is what has brought me to Illustrator. And that's fine, I'm fumbling my way through layouts relatively okay, because I've been using PS for years. But, in these early stages, a few issues have cropped up.
    1. My label designs will be printed on a clear label. How do I make the background transparent?
    2. How do I scan my Mum's hand drawn logo to make it into a Vector file?
    3. The labels will be mainly monochromatic (black/grey). Do I need to seperate colours for commercial printing? How do I do this?
    4. What file format should I save my work in for printing?
I've been hearing a lot about LiveTrace, but the problem is - I'm using Illustrator 10! I know, it's old, but it does the job. So any advice that pertains specifically to Illustrator 10 would be great (dust off your memories!)
Please speak in layman's terms with me. Although I'm familiar with PS...the concept of Illustrator and Vector files is very very new to me, and I won't understand complicated actions/terms.
Thank you to anyone who can help me on this, I'll be checking in often.
    Cryssie

    1. My label designs will be printed on a clear label. How do I make the background transparent?
You don't -- there is no background! (Same as in PS with a new file consisting of one layer.)
    2. How do I scan my Mum's hand drawn logo to make it into a Vector file?
    Use a scanner
But seriously -- Illy doesn't provide any bitmap stuff. Scan & clean up the image with Photoshop, only then import it into Illy. Put on a layer of its own. Make it slightly transparent. Lock that layer. Create new layer on top, draw lines over them. Done.
    3. The labels will be mainly monochromatic (black/grey). Do I need to seperate colours for commercial printing? How do I do this?
What does "mainly" mean? If it's mainly black/grey but still plus some color, that's still color. And even a little bit of color is more expensive than black & white (with, indeed, optional gray).
As for separating the colors, you don't need to. You might want to look into Pantone (spot) color vs. Full color. They both have their advantages, but it's a bad idea to use both.
    4. What file format should I save my work in for printing?
Illustrator ought to do fine. In case of doubt, also save as a PDF.
