Color Banding and Color Loss during playback

I'm experiencing weird behavior with Premiere Pro CS6.
As you can see in the above images I'm experiencing banding whenever Full resolution is selected for either playback or paused. If 1/2 or lower is selected then the image looks fine (albeit not full resolution). The images are 1/2 resolution in the Source monitor and Full resolution in the Program monitor. The left image shows the same thick banding as in the right image, with the addition of thinner stripes within the thick bands (don't know if they can be seen at this resolution or not).
This behavior is also not consistent. Some clips don't experience this at all. The clips in this example are MXF MPEG2 clips shot on a Canon XF300 however the same has been seen on everything from AVI to MOV and yet not *every* AVI or MOV.
Another oddity that I'm seeing is that when I use the fullscreen command to make the Full Resolution monitor fullscreen, the image inverts itself (upside down and backwards) and becomes black and white (I couldn't get a screengrab of it though).
My initial thought was that it would be a graphic driver error, but I've uninstalled and reinstalled the driver to no effect. I've also tried reinstalling PPro CS6 with the same results. I'm also tried merely cleaning the cache/preferences... also the same result. I'm at a complete loss and was hoping that someone out there had a solution I haven't thought of yet. My colleagues are not experiencing this issue, despite being on the exact same machines (specs below) with the same updated build of CS6.

Jeff! You're amazing! That was exactly the problem. Thank you also Jim for offering your input. Thank you for solving this aggravating problem. It's been bugging me for weeks!

  • Color Shift During Playback with ProRes

    Hello,
I rendered a composite in After Effects using Apple ProRes HQ. When I import the clip into FCP and drop it into a sequence, the "paused" clip looks like it's a different gamma than when I "play" the clip. Both actually look incorrect: when paused, the clip looks dark. When playing, the clip looks too bright and the saturation looks very low. (Please note that I'm not using a broadcast monitor, just my Cinema Display.)
I'm not trying to color grade, it's just very distracting.
Anybody have a solution for this? I've tried looking for past posts on this, but haven't found anything on this particular gamma issue...
I've also noticed a similar issue if I make a project / sequence that's 1920x800 (2.40:1 aspect ratio). In this case, it doesn't matter what codec I use. Weird.
    Thanks!

Sorry to open a dead thread, but I'd like to add some more information about this issue because I don't think it's a data rate issue. I just had a similar problem. I've been working on an animation project in AE at 1920x1080 23.98 and I thought I might save some time by rendering half-resolution clips to work with in FCP, knowing I'd probably be re-rendering a few times while I edited. So I output a 960x540 ProRes HQ clip, which did take very little time to render. I then created a 960x540 ProRes HQ FCP timeline to edit in. I immediately saw the gamma shift that sgmitch described. I'd never seen anything like it before, and I've done 1080p ProRes HQ editing on this system with no trouble in the past. So I did a little Googling and came across this thread.
I thought I'd test out the disk speed question by rendering a bit of the same sequence at 1920x1080. The data rate on that clip is 19.2 MB/s and the data rate on the half-resolution 960x540 clip is 8.6 MB/s. The full-res clip plays with no gamma shift in a 1920x1080 ProRes HQ timeline. But it turns out the half-res clip also plays with no gamma shift in that same 1920x1080 timeline, with or without rendering. When it's not rendered in that full-res timeline, it has an orange bar over it, but plays back fine. The half-res clip also has the gamma shift when playing in the Viewer, but not in QT Player. The 1920x1080 clip displays the gamma shift when placed into the 960x540 timeline and rendered. It will not play without rendering. 960x540 clips rendered using the Animation codec (33.3 MB/s) don't have a gamma shift in the Viewer or when played in a 960x540 Animation timeline.
There are no RT options in the drop-down menu for 960x540 timelines in any codec I've tried. I suspect the problem is caused by using non-standard resolutions with ProRes HQ, and it might also have something to do with the way AE saves gamma information in ProRes files. I know that came up when Frank Capria did that test last year comparing DNxHD and ProRes.
The obvious solution is to edit with standard frame sizes when using ProRes HQ. I know that's what I'll be doing.

  • Crashing and poor performance during playback of a large project.

    Hi,
I've been a regular user of iMovie for about 3 years and have edited several 50GB+ projects of DV quality footage without too many major issues with lag or 'dropped frames'. I currently have a 80GB project that resides on a 95% full 320GB Firewire 400 external drive that has been getting very slow to open and near impossible to work with.
Pair the bursting-at-the-seams external drive, with an overburdened 90% full internal drive - the poor performance wasn't to be unexpected. So I bought a 1TB Firewire 400 drive to free up some space on my Mac. My large iTunes library (150GB) was the main culprit and it was quickly moved onto the new drive.
The iMovie project was then moved onto my Mac's movie folder - I figured that the project needs some "room" to work (not that I really understand how Macs use memory) and that having roughly 80GB free with 1.5GB RAM (which is more than used to have) would make everything just that much smoother.
    Wrong.
The project opened in roughly the same amount of time - but when I tried to play back the timeline, it plays like rubbish and then after 10-15 secs the Mac goes into 'sleep' mode. The screen goes off, the fans dies down and the 'heartbeat' light goes on. A click of the mouse 'wakes' the Mac only to find that if i try again, I get the same result.
I've probably got so many variables going on here that it's probably hard to suggest what the problem might be but all I could think of was repairing permissions (which I did and none needed it).
Stuck on this. Anyone have any advice?

I understand completely, having worked with a 100 GB project once. I found that getting a movie bloated up to that size was just more difficult with jerky playback.
I do have a couple of suggestions for you.
You may need more than that 80GB free space for this movie. Is there any reason you cannot move it to the 1TB drive? If you have only your iTunes on it, you should have about 800 GB free.
If you still need to have the project on your computer's drive, set your computer to never sleep.
How close to finishing editing are you with this movie? If you are nearly done except for adding audio clips, you can export (share) it as QuickTime Full Quality movie. The resultant quicktime version of your iMovie will be smaller because it will contain only the clips actually used in the movie, not all the saved whole clips that iMovie keeps as its nondestructive editing feature. The quicktime movie will be one continuous clip, incorporating all your edits and added audio. It CAN be further edited, but you cannot change text of titles already there, or change transitions or remove already added audios.
I actually do this with nearly every iMovie. I create my movies by first importing videos, then adding still photos, then editing with titles, effects and transitions. I add audio last, and if it becomes too distorted in playback, I export the movie and then continue adding audio clips.
My 100+ GB movie slimmed down to only 8 GB with this method. (The large size was due to having so many clips. The movie was from VHS footage of my son's little league all-star game, and the video had so many skipped segments that I had to split it into thousands of clips to remove the dropped ones. Very old VHS tape!).
I haven't upgraded to QT 7.5.5, but I heard that the jerky playback issue is mostly resolved with this new upgrade. I am in mid-project with about 5 iMovies, so I will probably plod along with my work-around method, not wanting to upgrade in the middle of any of them.
Hope this is helpful to you.

  • New problem - bad cracks during playback

I'm getting back cracks and crackling during playback despite the fact that there is no obvious cause. The cracks happen when I use any effect (though my gut feeling tells me this isn't the underlying problem). I'm using UAD vst plugins but and Adobe effects but I am no where near being maxxed out, only using around 50-60% of my vst power. The cracks happen even when I use Audition's Studio Reverb or graphic eq.only, no vst.
It sounds like a latency type of cracking or the type of cracking that happens when my plugins are maxxed out (nearly 100% on my meter) but as I said, that's not it (although it goes away when I remove all effects, even Audition effects).
The strange thing is I am only working with 3 tracks!!!...2 guitars and vocal. I have many sessions with full band, easily 2 dozen tracks and not had this problem before. But with only 3 tracks...something is screwy.
When I change the latency the cracking gets worse (currently it's at 1.5 seconds).
Any ideas on how I can troubleshoot this??? My software is up to date and my system is virus checked. I'm also an experienced Audition user (years).
    Thanks for any ideas.

Hey guys, my audio computer just developed this crackling on playback about 2 weeks ago.
On mastered out audio files, the crackle is not there, but on playback on new projects (started over the last 2 weeks) there is crackle in the playback on all tracks (I get crackling on playback on my speakers and on my headphones).  Even individually, if I mute certain tracks.
I found some weird points when playing with new projects:
-I shut down the computer, and started Audition 2.0 again.  I started a new project @ 48000 Htz and 32 bit sampling.  And there was NO CRACKLING on playback (on speakers, on headphones, on mastered test audio files)
-I went back to my problem projects with crackling playback and, yup, my playback had crackling on them
-I mastered out my origional raw audio tracks (from the crackling project timeline) and put them on my new project timeline, and NO CRACKLING DURING PLAYBACK.... hmmmmmmm.
I have no idea why it's doing this.
But if your project is having playback issues.  Try a full shutdown/reboot, open a new project and do a test record to see if there is crackle.  If no crackle on playback, then go back to your crackling project and master out and re-import your raw audio tracks to your new project timeline
If you guys have found another work-around, or a complete fix, post up and lemme know.

  • HT203477 Visual media disappearing during playback

The media in my project is suddenly and randomly disappearing during playback. I am seeing just a black screen and hearing audio.
I'm running required specs and have the most updated version of FCP X. I've imported all the media into the event. Anyone have any ideas?

Have you tried trashing your preferences?
Unexplained faults like this can often be fixed by clearing out FCP X's preferences (for some reason, they get knotted up from time to time).
Download Digital Rebellion's Preference Manager (free, simple to use, and perfectly safe, both to download and use).
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
With Preference Manager, you can backup the Prefs when FCP X (or any of the Apple Professional Applications) are working normally. Then when either of the applications are acting strangely, Trash the Preferences, then Restore from your backups (just a mouse-click).
If you trash the prefs and don't restore them, you will need to manually restore all your FCP X settings again, so it's a great idea to backup Preferences from time to time when FCP X is working well, then your backups are up to date.
Doesn't fix every problem, but it fixes a lot.
If trahsing the preferences doesn't work, open one of your video files with QuickTime and press Cmd+i to open the inspector, then post back with the full details shown.

  • Static during playback with soundfonts

I'm trying to bring a MIDI file into GarageBand and play it back using various soundfonts. However, when I choose "DLS Music Device" as my tone generator and assign a soundfont, I hear a loud hissing and crackling sound during playback. I only hear this when I'm using a soundfont, not with any of GarageBand's internal sounds.
I've tried several soundfonts, most of which I've used successfully in other applications, but none of them will play consistently in GarageBand without the hissing.
    Any ideas?

It happens even in a brand new project. I have an empty project apart from 1 track with the mic as an input. No plug ins or anything on it. I've tried the same switching the mic for a guitar with no problem. The guitar sounds perfect while playing and in playback but with the mic I can't hear anything when recording and the volume on the fader is very low so I have to normalise the track to hear the vocals are a good level. I've always done this with no issues but now it seems to be bringing out all these horrible noises. I should add that the vocals themselves are perfectly fine with no distorting, only this strange static sound during gaps in speech. Not sure if that narrows it down at all?
Ok the fact that the volume is very low is something to correct first, because that's not right. That mic requires either Phantom power or two AA batteries to function, do you have that provided?   The Mic input gain on the Line-6 Pod is where you raise the recording level.
It might also help if you posted a screen shot of logic's Audio preferences.

  • Color shift in external monitor during playback

    Hello,
I've been having an issue recently with HD playback to my external monitor. This is happening both in 720 and 1080 timelines. When playback is stopped, the image color looks correct both on the Mac and on the external monitor. But when I play the timeline, there is a slight color shift in the external monitor towards green. This color shift does not happen on the mac monitor during playback. This happens with rendered media, as well as media direct from the clip that does not need rendering. Exported videos do not have this issue. Any idea what may be happening?
I have a Mac Pro, 2.66 Quad with 8GB Memory. With Kona3 card connected to a Panasonic BT-LH2600W HD monitor. Kona3 is connected to monitor via HD-SDI. With Final Cut Pro 6.06 and Mac OS 10.5.8.

Type of footage you are using? What sort of hard drives it is stored on? Those would be good details to have too.

  • I just switched from Aperture to Lightroom and PS CC.  My images exported from LR and PS suffer color loss.  Where do I begin to correct this problem?

I just switched from Aperture to LR and PS CC.  My exported images suffer color loss?  How do I correct the issue?
I shoot with a Canon 5d Mark III in Adobe 1998 Color Space.  I've been exporting JPEGS for web with Color Space sRGB.

Does your issue have anything to do with switching from Aperture?
In other words, if you take a new photograph with your camera, and import it in Lightroom, then export it, is there still a problem?
Or is the problem somehow tied to transition from Aperture, or photos migrated from Aperture...?
I'm guessing the reason you brought up Aperture is that you did not have export "color loss" issues in Aperture, like you are having in Lightroom, but since you didn't say... (just want to be sure).

Has anyone had this issue. I created my song from itunes to garage band, took my iphotos to create a slide show and when I burned to idvd there are several pauses during playback?

    Hi
SlideShow in iDVD has a 99 photo limit - more than this and all sorts of error occures.
One can have more than one SlideShow on a DVD = X times 99 photos.
or assemble SlideShows in a movie editor (no limit at least not under 650 photos)
(only limit is Time in iDVD (movie time + MENU time --- 60 min or 120 min on SL-DVD and about twice on DL.-DVD )
    I use
    • iMovie up to HD6 - or -
    • FinalCut any version
As they will give a better quality than iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 can do.

  • Premiere Pro CC(V.8.0) sluggish and crashes during Playback

    Issue:
Premiere Pro CC(V.8.0) extremely sluggish and crashes during Playback. My video won't play at all unless I render (which is no problem). I render all my clips and attempt to play it back. It usually will allow me to watch it the first time around. After that, the program freezes up or becomes extremely sluggish. I have even had a blank green screen pop up on my playback monitor. Sometimes the program will generate the message "A Serious Error has occurred" and will shut down. Other times, the program just locks up. I am not running any other programs except email.
    Here is what I've tried:
    Cleared all my cache files
Set my Mercury Playback set to "Software only"
Restarted the program and computer after doing the above.
Made sure I had no RGB Curves as an effect (as I did see that was an issue from other threads)
    Deleted all unused footage
Deleted all render files and re-rendered everything.
I am editing footage that requires Ultra Key. I am using a Three-Way Color Corrector. My video isn't even 1 minute long, so I would think it would be easy to render and playback.

  • Saving to .pdf I experience color loss

I am experiencing color loss when I save my .ai file to .pdf. How can I fix this problem?
Is there a way to export a 170mb .ai file as jpeg?

What PDF settings are you using? The "Illustrator default" setting should not alter color. Check the custom settings and make sure "Output>Color Conversion" is set to none.
As for JPG, it is not the AI file size that is the limiting factor fo JPG output, it is file dimension/resolution. Depending on the file dimensions, use either "Save for Web" or "Export". Export is more direct and should work better for very large file dimensions. Depending on the final destination of the JPG, you may want to choose "RGB" output when exporting (relevant only if you're working in CMYK).

  • Color Loss (Desaturation) after final burn

    Here's a challenge...
I have color loss after I burn a DVD. It looks as though it is heavily desaturated or washed out??? I have tried a few different routes, all giving me the same result.
1 - An original QT self-contained movie that I use the SP4 built-in compression is fine UNTIL burnt.
2 - An export through Compressor to MPEG2 is fine UNTIL burnt.
3 - A master compressed through Cleaner is also fine UNTIL burnt.
This happens with both QT movies that have originated on Avid and FCP.
Also, this color loss / desaturation happens on both iDVD and Studio Pro.
I have compiled numerous tests as can be seen by these few and still no luck. Has anyone else ever had this problem???
    Thanks for your time.
    P. Bolte

Burning or building a project will NOT affect the quality of a previously-encoded MPEG2 file. It only muxes in the audio and builds the DVD. It does not touch the original MPEG2 video data.
If you are seeing a quality difference, it can only be due to what you're using to view files before you make the DVD, and what you're using to view files after you make the DVD.
PS: Cleaner stinks at MPEG2 encoding. Use ANYTHING else.

  • Importing PNG into Flash = Color loss

Is anyone out there having this problem: When importing png
files into flash there is a subtle but significant color loss.
Particularly in images that contain alot of Black. It's as if Flash
is using a different color space to Photoshop even though color
management is off in the original photoshop document. When the
PNG's are imported into flash they are always washed out and much
lighter than the original. This is more obvious when importing
images which contain alot of Black. I've been experiencing this
problem for years now and it is sooooo frustrating infact I'm
trying despeatly hard to keep this message calm. Is anyone out
there having the same issue? Im using Mac OSX 10.4 Photoshop CS and
    Flash 8?

PNG's are badly designed and often suffer from color
    problems. You may need
to use a different color space in photoshop that is
    compatible with Flash.
It's not a Flash problem .. and not really even a Photoshop
    problem. . its a
    problem in PNG's themselves.
See here for an interesting article about why PNG files are
    stuffed...

  • Color shift during video capture (moved from Nseri...

I have noticed that the video camera in my n79 is very sensitive to changes in light.  Often I get a major color shift during a video capture seemingly for no reason, especially when shooting outside.  Is this a defect or should I use a particular setting for video? Current settings are:
    quality: High(TV);
    scene mode:Auto;
    video light: off(shooting video outside during day);
    white balance: Automatic (this MIGHT be the culprit?);
    Color tone:Normal.
Two stills from the same video are attached; the second, a few seconds later, is unnaturally vivid (almost day-glo!).
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Wow, what a quick reply!
Delivery was going to be Quicktime HD and probably downconvering to SD MPEG2 for a DVD. I was just going to edit in HDV, since I'm not doing anything fancy, just to try it out as a workflow option (and previews for the client). The first couple of projects I've started on my Macbook Pro though have had this hue shift (I can post an example on-line if need be by filming my monitor...) It's not inherent in the actual captured QT file, just when being played back in FCP. When I export out of FCP the QT file looks great as well. I've never had this problem on my G5 tower with HDV from the same camera or captured the same way. I'm worried that it's the univeral copy of FCP or even worse, my Macbook!
    Make sense?
    Thanks

  • ITunes stops during playback and won't start until I restart the computer

I'm hoping someone can help me with this. I just reformated my computer and placed all the updates and programs back onto my computer. I had iTunes on my computer before and I reinstalled it then upgraded it to version 7.3.2.6. Now I've been reintroducing music back into the library on a folder by folder method (drag and drop). Anyway, during review of the songs I will get a random issue where the iTunes just stops during playback. I have shut down the program and restarted it. I've also shut down the following programs at different times to see if it would help:
iPodService, ITunes.exe (the program), iTunesHelper, and even taskmgr.exe. Nothing seems to help. When I restart the program I click on play (any song or playlist) and nothing happens. The only thing that I have found to help is rebooting my computer. Does anyone have any ideas?
I've check the event logs and nothing is showing in there and other programs are working without an issues.
    Please help!

Any suggestions on what this can be?
