Color bars question in Premiere

See the difference in color bars. The one in the program window at right is quite a bit brighter than than the source view. When I double click the "bars and tones" clip in the project panel, the image opens up in the source view on the left. When I place the same file on the timelime it appears lighter in the program view at right. No effects applied. Why is there such a difference and which should I calibrate with?

I actually have a Matrox MX02 Mini which has a calibrator, but I find it unreliable. When I calibtrate its color bars, the video looks way too bright - not even close.
I am still curious about the two different outputs in Premiere. This is a clip after I placed it on the timeline. Source view on the left is quite a bit darker than the program view.

Dynamic Linked Footage Coming up with Color Bars in Premiere Pro

I recently had been editing a project in Premiere, and decided to do some work in after effects to the footage using the dynamic link function. It's worked fantastically up until this point, as now it's causing me some grief. I recently built a new PC as the mobo among other hardware was showing signs of making it's way out the door after years of use. I installed the HDD from the previous computer into this system, as well as a brand new HDD. Upon opening up my project, all I see on the footage that's been linked into AE is color bars. I figure this is probably just a case of PP having issue finding the location of the video files but I'm unsure and not entirely sure how to go about solving this issue.
Any ideas?

If you only want to tint the entire frame, then you can do so by creating a solid-color clip, putting that on top of the track that you want to tint, and then set the blending mode to Color. Adust opacity of the color matte to taste.
Toward the bottom of this article, you can see how to do this in After Effects, but the idea is the same in Premiere Pro.

Color correction questions

I have a few questions about the color correction tools in Premiere CS4.
1. Suppose that the colors in my shot are basically correct, but the blacks have a tint to them. Which is the best color correction filter to use to correct for this?
2. Do any of the color correction filters desaturate secondary colors? I have a shot that would probably look fine if I could just desaturate the yellows.
I know that this can be done in Photoshop.
3. Is there a good technique in Premiere for matching colors between two scenes or cameras? I know Avid's color correction has a specific setting for this.

1) tint in black probably means white balance was off a bit ( not matched to your light source).
Can try to correct WB overall and get rid of black tint ( use eye dropper and choose the black area that's supposed to be black and make it black...see what happens to the rest of your image colors )
2) maybe broadcast colors...which has some tendency to imitate "selective color" in photoshop, as you adjust stuff ...
3) no ...except maybe ( again ) broadcast colors ... but probably you have to do by eye or LUT...but basically no
I'm kinda new at this so dont take my word as gospel...someone else may have cool ideas ( they usually do )

Offline/Missing Image Sequences in After Effects CS6 with Color Bars

I am working on a stop motion animation in After Effects CS6. Each clip has been imported as an image sequence from stills on my hard drive. When I open up After Effects, all image sequences now have color bars over them, as if they are offline. Trying to reload them does nothing. I cannot 'link media' because it isn't just one file; it's an image sequence so there are many of them.
I first noticed this when the color bars appeared in my dynamically linked comps inside of Premiere Pro. Everything played smoothly the first time I opened the project in Premiere CS6, after originating in CS5.5. Then the second time I opened up Premiere, the color bars appeared on the linked comps. I hadn't yet opened up my AE project in CS6 yet, so when I did, AE converted the project and I resaved it.
Any help related to this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Rick, thanks for your advice. I tried this and it worked. The reason I didn't do this before is that, because it is stop motion, I couldn't remember how many frames I had imported for each sequence. For instance, if I shot 54 images and only imported 52 into the sequence, I wouldn't remember which 52 images to import...this might still be causing a problem, but I don't know yet. I think in most cases I imported all the images in a folder, so the image sequences should be fine.
I am having another problem, however. Even though the issue seems to be fixed in AE, it doesn't seem to be fixed in Premiere...each image sequence is dynamically linked from AE, but each dynamically linked comp is still being show with color bars as they did in AE...I think that maybe my Premiere project is still linking to the old CS5.5 AE project, and not the new one opened and saved in CS6...

Pantone color bars in PDF output

Does anyone knows how to get in PDF output Pantone color bars? When you check "color bars" in "marks" menu in PDF output and save your work as PDF, you'll get CMYK color bars even if there's no CMYK color at all. I don't want to draw swatches and fill them with Pantone color to get those color bars. Any idea pls.? Is it possible at all?

I have CMYK colors and two Pantone colors and need to know if it's possible to get in PDF output Pantone color bars (I do save as from Illustrator). And if yes, then what should I do to get this Pantone color bar in my PDF?

Lost Color Bars and Unrendered Slate

Hi,
Installed FCS3 onto one system on an Apple Xsan as upgrade. Under the Machine login all works fine I can see Color Bars and anything that needs rendering plays with the slate as normal.
Now under a Client login, The Slate is missing and Color Bars are white in the Viewer (Set to RGB) and Black on the timeline.
I have killed all the Clients files on the local and network homes ie fresh install. but still has the same problem.
Does not make a difference what format you are in but when you go back to the Machine all is fine.
Any ideas..... as when you are playing the unrendered sections and come to a normal section it just keeps a freeze and then falls over asking for faster hard drives. But once rendered will play fine.

The main user should have a folder named "Constant Frames" in the Render Files folder. The color bars and unrendered slates are in there.
Even if you delete it, FCP should create that folder and it's content at the next launch.
You might try copying it from the main user to the Client users Render Files folder.
Doesn't solve the question of why it's not being generated though.

Effect applied color bar on clips

In Premiere Pro CC there is an "FX" box instead. Which is fine, but is there a way to make this appear before the clip name so that way I can always see it? Or turn the effect applied color bar back on? It was helpful when applying effects to a bunch of clips to know which ones still didn't have an effect.
Hope there is a solution.

You cannot change the way the clip name and fx box appear or turn the box on/off.
When applying an effect to a clip the fx box turns purple just like it did with the color bar.

Print to Tape color bars and black order

Hello. i'm about to print a videoclip for a tape. my question is the following, in the print to video setup theres is the option for color bars and black.. but the color bars come first and then the black. i would like to have the black first for 2 minutes and then color bars for 30 seconds..how can i do that?

I want full control over how things happen. As an added benefit, by keeping everything in the sequence timeline, I have the ability to use a custom countdown clock.

FCE 4 Problem: Color bar thru the Viewer

I just upgraded to FCE4 and have found two annoyances already....
1)I get a horizontal color bar running thru the middle of the image in the viewer. It's mostly an aqua color but there are shades of other colors in it (which vary from image to image). Is this some sort of new feature or is something wrong here. I sure can't see (or imagine) any purpose to it. I did two installs -- on an iMac and a MacBook Pro -- and the problem is only showing up on the iMac.
2) The controls seem very different... In 3.5 you could right click on a clip to cut it from the timeline. Can't do that now. Are the controls really that different from 3.0 & 3.5, or is this another glitch?
As long as I'm asking questions... Anyone got a good text/manual to recommend? It's feeling like I need to re-learn how to use FCE. I wouldn't have expected an upgrade to be so different from the earlier version (eg, right clicking to cut and paste clips should have stayed unchanged, in my book).

I've also deleted FCE4 from the HD (also deleting the plist file and the project file) and reinstalled it; after importing the same files, I get the same result. Other things I've noticed...
1) If I import the same files into FCE4 on my MacBookPro I have no problem.
2) Once I drop the file from the Viewer onto the timeline, and then re-open it in th Viewer from the timeline, the color bar is gone.
3) The color bar is not showing up in the Canvas or the icons on the Timeline.
4) If I import the same files into FCE 3.5.1, I have no problem. (BTW, I'm back to using 3.5.1 until I receive my copy of your book.)
So the imported files are not corrupt; the problem is somewhere else. Or maybe I'm just missing something obvious (well, it'd have to be less than obvious).

Can I show a color bar instead of a color bullet in iCal Monthly view for all my events in all calendars?

In the Monthly view of iCal the only events that show a color bar in the event is the Birthday Calendar. All other events in all my other calendars only show a color bullet next to the event (unless I click on that event which then shows as a color bar). I would like to know if it is possible for all the calendar events to have a color bar in the monthly view instead of just that tiny color bullet.

Before making any attempts at deleting calendar data, backup what you have just in case:
Click on each calendar on the left hand side of iCal one at a time highlighting it's name and then going to File Export > Export and saving the resulting calendar file to a logical location for safekeeping.
iCal has an automated function located in iCal > Preferences > Advanced > Delete events "X" days after they have passed. By typing in a value for days you can tell iCal to delete all events before that time frame.
Example:
Today is 4-16-2012.
If I wanted to delete all events prior to 1 year ago (4-16-2011) I would type in "365" for the number of days.
Once you type in the number of days you want kept in iCal, close the preferences and then quit iCal.
Re-open iCal and check to see if the events are gone. If not you may want to leave it open for several minutes and then quit again.
Once the events are removed go back to iCal > Preferences > Advanced > Delete events "X" days after they have passed and make sure the check mark is removed to prevent future deletion.

How can I add a color bar scale to a CW3DGraph

I am using the CW3Dgraph control (parametric surface plot) in a LabVIEW program I have written to graph the the strength of an electromagnetic field over a sphere. The plot color map style is set to use the "color spectrum". I would like to add a color bar scale to the graph so the user can determine the approximate field strength by the color of the plot. Is there an example that could help me with this, does anyone know how to add a color bar scale, or is there some other way to indicate to the user the color's level?

I think if you search this forum you will find more than one approach to this quest.In this thread you will find an earlier discusion of the same nature that has a couple of methods you can try out.

IPhone 3g broken ,Genuis Bar Questions. ****LONG**** PLEASE HELP

Well i guess ill say the whole story. I bought my iPhone on August 6th and i had a plane to catch that day to Cali. So i synced it all up with my mac mini. My dad also got one and he went to Brazil (which is why im in Cali) While ive been here ive been syncing my iPhone with her windows computer to put apps on. Everything has been great until this week. Im calling it **** week. Ever since i updated to 2.0.2 its had no service most everywhere, apps and safari quit and when safari doesnt it runs extrememly slow and typing lag is worse then ever. I figured whatever maybe once i go back home it will start working again. Well thats not the case. Last night i was downloading apps and one of them got stuck when it was almost done installing. So synced it with my computer and it took it off.. well it still showed that it was installing. So i restarted my iPhone and it got stuck at the Apple logo(which is a common problem i know about the big thread also) so i restarted it and everytime it would go back to the Apple logo. I tried restoring it and everytime i plug it into my computer its makes my computer run extrememly slow and itunes wont come up. Then when i unplug it itunes pops up and everythings running normally. So after about 6 hours straight of trying to fix it, its now not turning on at all. Even when i plug it into a power outlet and computer. So basically i have a broken iPhone and its worthless. I have an appointment but im wondering if its even worth it.
Genuis bar questions:
1. Does the accoutn holder have to be present? Im on the account but not the account holder. My dad said to try.
2. Will they try and hold my iphone? I cant leave it there because i have to leave that day.
3. Would they just give me a new one? I would love that and not have to go through all this trouble
Please help im stuck withotu a phone in the worst possible time.

If there is a hardware problem with the iPhone they will replace it for you.
You may want to update and restore the iPhone.

Flashing Color Bars - major frustration

I'm a recent convert from Final Cut Express to Final Cut Pro. I've got a brand new setup using my 15" Powerbook, a Miglia Director's Cut SCART to convert my Firewire to analog video for use with an external video monitor. I'm currently working in PAL with a PAL monitor.
I just created my first project in FCP; it's set up as DV PAL and I've imported just one PAL DV clip into the timeline.
My problem: about every 57 seconds I get about a one second flash of colorbars on my external monitor. This is driving me bonkers. It doesn't matter if FCP is playing back the clip, or simply sitting idle.
I've discovered if I start another app and FCP is no longer the active app, these same bars come on the external monitor all the time. When FCP again becomes the active app, my external monitor again correctly shows video...but with that once a minute color bar flash.
These bars also don't look like what I'm familiar with in the past. They consist of a single row...there's no second or third row of patches. The first column is half-width and white, followed by the colors and last column is half-width black.
This flashing is driving me nuts. Does anyone have any idea what's going on here?...and how to stop this?

Andy, your response is well thought out. Shortly after my last post, I discovered for myself these bars are indeed being output by the Miglia box. When I shut down the computer for the evening, only the Miglia box and monitor remained on...and you guessed it...I still had bars on the screen. So the bars themselves are coming from the Miglia box.
Also, as you deduced, this apparently occurs when the box receives no input. The next logical deduction is that Firewire communication is being interfered with. I was suspicious of that myself. At the moment, I have no anti-virus software installed. Furthermore, I was certain to have all programs shut down and used Activity Monitor to insure any unnecessary processes were shut down as well. (The only thing running was Snaps Pro, which I shut down; everything else appeared to be system stuff.)
I've used two different cables and two different Firewire inputs. One configuration had the Miglia box on its own bus with nothing else connected. None of this made any difference.
So at this point, I'm getting suspicious about the Miglia box itself. I'll give them a call today and see what they have to say.

Recording color bars to a CF card

want to record color bars from Premier to a CF card to play back from Canon 5d iii. i choose Export and then H.264 format, but it won't play back from the card,on the camera.

haven't tried anything like that...but if I did try it , for my nikon d800 ( uses mov h264 for video , same as your canon I think ), I would export as mov and use codec of h264. should be able to play the mov file in your camera.
if not, can you just use a still image for your purpose ? you trying to compare color bars with some kinda color patches or something when shooting ? or trying to somehow deal with white balance ??? who knows.. anyway, you can save a frame of the color bars as a jpg or tiff or whatever your camera can see...

Colored bars in BAR Chart

I want to display a bar chart which is having different colored bars. For example, i am now using equipment wise bar chart, if i am having 50 equipments, all 50 equipments should be displayed in different colors in bar chart. Now i am getting output for those 50 equipments having same color. I tried by giving that equipment column in DATA MAPPING -
> LABEL COLUMNS, I got only 32 bars which is in different colors in output. Kindly give me some solution for this.

You may have more than 32 bars but they will be the same data series and therefore the same color. For separate colors the limit is 32 (I think you'll see that pens 17-32 repeat the colors from pen 1-16 in the default template).
It sounds like your best bet is using ValueColumn for your numerical field and then LabelColumn for the string name field. This way, depending upon the results returned it will provide good coloration between bars, but it may also be decreasingly relevant beyond the first 'x' items. A normal Pareto chart might use the notion of top 10 or top 20, which would be well within the 32 color limit.
