Color Calibrating a Dell u2711 monitor in 10.6

I bought the Dell u2711 monitor right before the Apple 27" monitor was announced. I have had a horrible time trying to get the color calibration right. I don't have a hardware color meter, but that hasn't been a real problem with past monitors.
It seems that the Dell monitor functions in a wider color space, so I am not getting predictable results using photoshop in sRGB (for web graphics) or in general. Even if I restrict the monitor to the sRGB colorspace, some colors, such as reds and yellows appear washed out, while blues look fine. If I use the standard color setting, the color is super saturated when compared to my MBP LCD.
What are the best practice settings for calibrating this monitor for day to day web work?

Problems with MBP late 2009 + Dell U2711 + DVI Dual-Link

Hi!
I'm new to Apple Communities. I've been using for quite a long time my MBP with my Dell U2711 monitor. Sometimes it works perfect. But other times, just after bootup or reasume the display doesn't work properly.
Some times it doesn't detect the signal of the MBP and doesn't start.
Other times it displays the right image but with something like "noise" in every color.
The only solution I found is to turn off and on the display or if it doesn't start, forcing it touching the menu button to start up. If it appears noise and I just change the source and put it back again it works fine.
It has only happened me with this computer. I have also used it with a custom made computer with a GTX280 and never had a problem with it.
I tried to boot up with the 2 different graphics cards my MBP has, and with both I have the problem. I even had the problem using the "normal" DVI adapter. I suppose it must be something of the computer firmware. Some times, if I restart the computer using only the U2711 display. The bootup logo and loading is displayed fine. But when it displays the login window the noise starts.
I've always had this problem. It isn't something that started happening one day. I even reinstalled Mac OS X.
I'ts really strange and I found nobody who has the same problem. I hope someone has a solution.
If someone doesn't understand what I call "noise", please, tell me and I will post a photo of it.

Not thru HDMI, but it will thru the mini-display port. You simply need a mini-display port to full size display port cable, something like this.

Color calibration

Does the Apple Cinema Display 24-inch monitor require color calibration like any other monitor?
I have a Spyder2Express but have not used it yet with this new screen.
Anyone who calibrate their 24-inch screen from Apple?

If the printer is is not printing the wrong colors ( green instead of yellow) or printing to dark. It would be printing within the range of function. One can calibrate the color though the toolbox. The toolbox tabs and how to use the toolbox is covered in pages 74-75 in the user manual. I hope that this helps.

Problem with Dell U2711

Hi there
I just took delivery of a new Dell 27" monitor and there's something wrong with the image at 2560x1440
I have it connected to my ATI Radeon HD 3870 Graphics card via a DVI cable
The image is all pixelated
Can anyone help?

Robert. I am in the process of procuring my first iMac. Stron preference toward the 27" iMac as it has teh dual Thunderboly ports. I already have 2 Dell U2711 monitors which I will connect to my iMac to give me a 3 screen setup, but the show stopper is the resolution being limited on the Dell U2711's. Did you manage to solve the resolution limitation with the screens being limited to 1920x1080 or did you manage to get them to run at 2560x1440?

Mac Mini from 2010 with Dell U2711 resolution question

I just hooked up a Dell U2711 monitor with the DVI cable. I should be able to get a resolution of 2560x1440 with that, but the highest res I have in my System Prefs is 1920x1080. Does anyone know what I need to do to get the max resolution?

External Monitor (Dell u2711) problems

I'm an editor and just bought a Dell u2711 to hook up to my MacBook Pro (2.53 GHz, 4GB Ram, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M). The DVI would only support up to 1920x1280 so I bought a mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort adapter and that got me up to my full resolution for the monitor.
HOWEVER... my computer seems to be too slow or the graphics card isn't good enough to support such a monitor. Is this true? When I use the external monitor as extra desk space and put all my FCP windows in it I get this banding on my subjects when they move. It just looks like very slight glitches and the movement isn't displayed so smoothly. I'm working with 1080p ProRes 422.
When I try and use the Dell u2711 as an external video monitor (display all frames) it lags pretty bad and the motion is stuttery and not showing in smooth motion.
Please help. Would I have been better off with the 27" Cinema display? I thought they were pretty similar monitors. Is my laptop or graphics card not up to the task? Just last Nov. or so I got this laptop with what I thought was the best available graphics card Apple had at the time for this laptop.

Go to your Audio / Video Settings >> A/V Devices tab and turn of "Mirror on desktop" for Playback ... this will reduce the load on your system as it will not be trying to decode the video for two separate (and different) playback streams simultaneously ie when using Digital Cinema Desktop Preview to display All Frames then you will not see playback in the Canvas window as well, just on the external preview monitor.
And/Or you could also try setting FCP's System Preferences >> Playback Control >> Gamma Correction to "Approximate" ... according to the manual this can offer a little performance boost (but to be honest I haven't ever tested this).
Choosing Real-Time Playback Gamma Correction Options
Whenever you watch your video on a computer display (such as video displayed in the Canvas, the Viewer, or via Digital Cinema Desktop Preview), Final Cut Pro applies gamma correction to the video to more closely approximate the way it would appear on a video monitor.
Note: Gamma correction is not applied to external video outputs such as DV or third-party interfaces because this correction is inherently applied by external video monitors.
If your computer’s graphics card supports gamma correction, Final Cut Pro automatically uses the card for accurate gamma correction. If your computer has an older graphics card that does not support gamma correction, you have two gamma correction options in the Playback Control tab of the System Settings window.
Accurate: High-quality gamma correction. This option is the most accurate but also requires the most processing power.
Approximate: Lower-quality gamma correction. This option leaves more processing power available for real-time effects but results in less accurate color and brightness rendition.
Tip: If your real-time performance is limited, try changing the gamma correction setting to Approximate (if available).

What system/equipment do you guys recommend for color calibrating a macbook and an external monitor?
I'd rather pay a little more for a better system than save a buck, if the results will be better.

I would look at the Spyder Express (link below). It gives you the same results as a Pro series, but is less expensive. The other thing you need to check is your Creative Suite Color Settings. You can set these up in Bridge (Edit>Creative Suite Color Settings). Hardware calibration is only one part of the equation, software is the other.

Recommended color calibrator/monitor calibration tool?

Hi all,
It is a few years since I have purchased a color calibrator for my monitor and need to purchase a new one now at the new company I am at. It will be for my 30" Apple Cinema Display. As usual, I always come straight to these forums for your advice FIRST before making my selection.
In the past I have used both GretagMacbeth's Eye-One Display and the Pantone Huey. I have not tried the Colorvision Spyder.
Of course, these have each changed and been improved since I last worked with them, so can you make some recommendations as to which you feel may work best for you, and can thus recommend to me?

Color calibrating monitor

Hello, I am new to the pro photography/editing world and I am looking for recommendations for monitor color calibration systems. I am currently using a 13 inch macbook air. There are so many on the market I don't know where to start. I am looking for something that can automatically adjust the calibration for whatever light I happen to be sitting in at the moment- perhaps something with a sensor? I am not trying to break the bank. I see that the Spyder4 and X-Rite are popular. If you can give me your recommendations/model name that would be great!!

Generally, you have the right idea in that your working environment will influence your perception. But an automatic adjustment of your calibration introduces so many uncontrollable factors that it's practically unworkable. It will only confuse you. Some calibrators have an option to adjust display brightness automatically, but the general advice is to disable that.
Concentrate on controlling your environment as far as you can. It's much more important to tune your calibration targets so that you get a good match to printed output. Ideally, screen white point should be a visual match to paper white - and this is where the environment will influence your perception. Similarly for contrast/black point. Start at 120 cd/m² and 6500K, and a contrast range (if available) of around 350:1. Adjust as needed to get a match.
Some will probably say a laptop display is not worth calibrating at all. I disagree, but don't expect too much. One basic problem is that most laptop displays are TN-based with very restricted viewing angles, to the point where the top of the screen is too dark and the bottom washed out. But if you get a calibrator now you still have that if you decide to get a better monitor later.
To be specific, I'd recommend the x-rite i1 Display Pro at around $200. This is generally the best third-party calibrator currently on the market. A more inexpensive solution is the ColorMunki Display, which uses the same sensor but somewhat restricted software. The Spyders are good too, but not quite as reliable and consistent at the same price point.

Using Wide Gamut (Dell u2711) With Lightroom

I have just completed an upgrade of my computer system to include 2 Dell U2711 27" monitors. I am using LR 3.5. My system is running with Windows 7 64 bit and a ATI Firepro graphics card running the displays.
Before purchasing these, and listening to the chatter on various forums I was led to belive that I was going to get garish coloration on all applications except Adobe LR and CS5. This does not seem to be the case. LR and CS5 are fine and the other applications IE and Windows Office seem to be OK as well.
These displays are calibrated at the factory.
Does anyone have any experience with these and can share any "gotchas" with me.

Well I am glad that I am taking my time on this calibration process. I thought I had it understood correctly. I am making my dialog with Dell a part of this message so you can see the exchange I had with their 2nd level of support and I am also a document from Dell engineering. It would be excellent if I could use a calibrated “custom” present on the monitor for LR and CS5 and simply select one of the presets (sRGB or Adobe RGB) when I am not using LR and CS5.   I am not running with any monitor profile and a generic PNP driver now and I am getting much better results than I expected. I would just un-select the profile when I did not want to use the calibrated “custom” preset.
Based on the data engineering provided me in the document I sent that is correct( Yes).

Are you telling me that ONLY the “custom” preset will be altered and that the other presets will remain at the “factory” settings. This is an important question for all of us who want to use this monitor for photographic work. If we photographers can have one of the presets, namely, “custom” calibrated, and the others left as shipped then we can choose the customer preset for our work and switch back to sRGB or Adobe RGB for routine office and billing functions.   If this is true, and the photography world learns of this, Dell will sell a lot of U2711s, especially considering that the U2711 is an excellent price performer. an

Per the documents as with any calibration you must be careful and aware of settings you change. Use the setting CUSTOM COLOR if you want to calibrate using your own equipment as per document.
In regards to your question on your video card as the manufacture /forums recommends you should disable any color managements since you are using your own color/video calibration tools.
My personal suggestion is that since you are doing custom photo/video work that these LCD are being used for, I would calibrate them for your business purposes and leave as such. With the enhanced video settings normal internet browsing and such will have better clarity.

According to what we discussed when I use calibration hardware and software you mentioned that I should use only the “custom” setting and that once I calibrated the monitor “all” factory setting would be overwritten and cannot be restored. When I read the word document you sent me I believe I am seeing something that needs clarification:
Question 7 from the word document:
7.         Is it possible to revert to factory pre-tuned settings after I color calibrated my unit with my equipment?
The customer should not re-calibrate and save your result in sRGB and AdobeRGB preset modes. Once overwritten, it is not possible to revert back to factory pre-tuned setting. The customer is advised to use the "Custom Color" preset mode to do their own calibrations.
Does this mean that only the “custom” preset is altered from the factory setting to store the results of my calibration?   Does this mean that if I use the “custom” preset only for calibration that sRGB and AdobeRGP will not be changed from the factory setting? Does this mean that each of the U2711 presets have its own LUT table? Can you please clarify?
If this turns out to be the case I can use the sRGB preset, with no profile as it is now, for routine processing with non-color aware applications, and then select the newly calibrated “custom” preset when doing photo processing. Is this the case? After reading the attachment I believe I have to be very careful not to negatively affect my monitors as they cannot be reverted to factory settings.
I have done some additional research that includes the relationship between monitors and some high end graphics cards such as the ATI Firepro V5800 card I am using. This research indicates that I should disable any efforts by the graphics card to do color management lest I interfere with the efforts to calibrate the monitors.
I am probably being a bit picky but having more than 50 years in the technical end of computers I have been burned more than once having two elements of a computing system fight each other.

Dell calibrates the U2410/U2711 according to the DeltaE(1931) standard using equipment that can accurately measure high color gamut panels.

The color calibration is only done for new units shipped from factory; thus, replacement units will not be color-calibrated.
5.         In the event of warranty exchange, will the replacement unit come with a similar Color Calibration report?
Dell does not do the color calibration on the replacement units, as such, there will not be a Color Calibration Factory Report or similar attached to replacement units.
In cases where a brand new unit from factory needs to be shipped as a replacement unit, a Color Calibrated Factory Report will be shipped with it.
6.         Why does Dell only provide the Color Calibration Factory Report for new factory units of U2410/U2711?

One of the reasons could be the different type of color calibration equipment used. There are many types of color calibration equipment in the market.
Dell ensures Color Accuracy based on the Dell approved Color-Calibration equipment at Dell’s factory.

Color Calibration Spyder Reccomendations Please

I've sifted through this forum & goggled Color Calibration Spyder Recommendations as I need a cheap no brain required to operate spyder for setting up my Dell 2407.
I'm looking for a general purpose device -- not one that will cost hundreds, require a masters to operate or give me press run results.
Does anyone on this forum have a recommendation for me?

A while ago I bought PrintFIX Pro from ColorVision, which includes hardware and software for both monitor calibration and paper profiles for inkjet printing. I haven't made to many paper profiles, but I've had good results with monitor calibration. Not sure if they've come out with a newer version.

U2413 Color Calibration "Verify USB Connection"

I am trying to use the Dell Ultrasharp Color Calibration Solution with an x-rite i1 Display Pro.
Can't get beyond "Verify USB Connection". The USB cable between the monitor and computer is connected (tried both a USB 3.0 and a 2.0 port). The USB hub on the monitor is working. E.g. a USB stick connected to it can be read. The hub also appears in Device Manager.
But the Color Calibration software insists that there is no connection.
I made sure that nothing was connected to the hub. Installed the driver as suggested by Chris in "http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/peripherals/f/3529/t/19618874". So far nothing works.

The monitor is connected via HDMI to a Radeon HD 7900 card. I am not sure what you mean by "upstream" and "downstream", but there is a single USB cable connected to the back of the monitor to a USB 3.0 port on the computer. (I tried a USB 2.0 port as well.) The USB hub is working (tested with a USB stick). When I tried to use the calibration software nothing was connected to the hub (apart from when I tested with the x-rite i1Display connected to the hub).
Other USB ports on the computer are connected to: keyboard, mouse, HardLock dongle (also tested without the dongle).
The monitor was reset to Factory Defaults.
Only one monitor is connected.
DP 1.2 is disabled.
I tried the x-rite device connected directly to the computer and on both of the USB ports on the side of the monitor. X-rite's own Profiler software always recognizes the device, no matter to which port it is connected.
