Color calibration across multiple images

Hi everyone,
I took a bunch for photos for a scientific documentation project outside in the shade throughout the day, resulting in significantly different lighting. Here are the first and last photos of the day:

The challenge is to use the color strip to calibrate the images so that the colors are consistent in all of them. Note that the color strip was printed without any special attention to calibration, so the absolute values of the colors are not necessarily trustworthy. Also, for these purposes, the paper can be assumed to be pure white. Basically, the idea is to get the absolute calibration as accurate as possible, but really nail the relative calibration, so that the color strip and paper appear essentially identical in all the images. I've tried adjusting levels by sampling known white, grey, and black in the images, but that hasn't done the trick -- clearly a more sophisticated approach is required! That said, I have over 100 of these images to process, so a relatively straightforward solution would be appreciated, if possible.
Please let me know if you can help, and thanks in advance!

Move on to video editing apps. Seriously. Automatic shot matching features e.g. in Speedgrade or even Premiere's/ After Effects' Auto-Levels can already get you halfway there by doing a temporal comparison within the sequence, not to speak of sophisticated plug-ins like RevisionFX' RE:Match. They may in fact skew the colors oddly or make them appear dull and "too averaged", but that would be quite uniform across the sequence and then much easier to tackle with a global correction.

  • Add common keyword quickly across multiple images?

Is there a way to quickly add a common keyword across multiple selected images via simple text entry into the Metadata Panel or File Info dialogue - without loosing the existing multiple keywords?
I can use the keyword panel but this takes longer to add the keyword, and requires removing misc keywords that in most cases I don't want to keep and clutter up the panel.
For example, I have 3 images selected each with a single keyword "dog", "cat" and "horse" respectively.
I want to add a common keyword "animal", eg so that the first image now has two keywords  "dog" and "animal".
The problem with the two methods above is that:
Metadata panel will remove the existing multiple keywords, replacing them with only "animal" in each image
File Info will either do the same (if all existing keywords are highlighted), or if adding the new keyword, combine everything into each image so that each one has "dog", "cat", "horse", and "animal".
Maybe I'm missing something obvious but it doesn't seem intuitive for what I would expect to be a common requirement.
    Thanks

How about to use Metadata Template to append the keyword that you want to add to multiple selected images?
First create a Metadata Template with the common keyword input. And then select the all the images you want to add the keyword and then append the prepared Metadata Template.

  • Standardizing exposure across multiple images using a gray card

    Hi,
I am studying chest feather coloration in Barn Swallows, and take pictures of swallow chests against a white background with gridlines, while always including a gray card in the image. In order to evaluate chest color between birds, the lighting, exposure and white balance for all images must be identical.
I place my tripod in the shade whenever possible and set exposure manually (using the spot meter on a D200) to be 2 stops underexposed, and use fill flash to provide the bulk of the light. This gives me even lighting, but because of the automative flash exposure adjustment, each photo has slightly different luminance.
I was under the impression that adjusting exposure would be a snap by clicking on the gray card in each image and telling my software to adjust it to 18% reflectance. However, Lightroom does not seem have such a feature. This seems very strange given how frequently one is instructed to standardize exposure with a gray card.
Adding to the problem is that my gray card (from Delta) has a lot of microscopic variation in its surface in brightness (and hue). While Lightroom gives me a white balance adjustment eye dropper, it seems to be limited to sampling one pixel, rather than averaging values over a number of pixels. Because of the limitations of my gray card, Lightroom's white balance eye dropper is of little use, as the white balance vary dramatically depending on which pixel on the gray card I sample. Is there a way to change the size of the area sampled for white balance purposes?
    Thanks much,
    Gernot

    Gernot,
I think the thing to do is to use a consistent setup, which means no TTL on the flash and a set distance from the subject, and minimise ambient light effects (small aperture).
Alternatively you could photograph a "colourchecker" with each bird and use a calibration script on the raw files to sort out the settings each time - a bit lengthy though, expect about 20 minutes a time. However, it would be quite definitive.
As far as the "single point" problem goes, you could set all the noise sliders to the max to blur out the imperfections in the card, take a sample, then undo the noise corrections.
I can't help thinking that for reference work like this, Photoshop is the tool for the job and LR will help you get organised into PS, but it won't replace it.

  • I want to add disolve transition across multiple images?

In FCP7 I just select all the images in the bin and drag them over the Canvas window and select insert with transition.  Is there a way to do this same thing in FCPX?  Thanks.

Just select all the clips you want the transition applied to and then either double click the transition or drag it to the project and drop it on one of the selected clips.

  • Linking and updating colors across multiple illustrator files

Is there a way to link and automatically update color swatches across multiple illustrator files (CS4)?
I've saved swatches into an ASE file, and opened the ASE file into multiple illustrator files, but the secondary files don't seem to reference back to the ASE file, when a new version with changes to the swatches has been made.
    Thanks for any advice.

    @SP/RAA
Jean posted perhaps the best solution for your problem.
A template is an Illustrator document for startup. You can create a document...place all the colors you want to the Swatches panel....insert contents to symbol, brushes, graphic styles and so on. Then you can go File > Save as Template.
Now...when you want to start a new document..you could File > New from Template. Then new document will have all the stuffs of the template, including other specifications like rulers viewed...guides...
But even using template you cannot update a batch of documents...The template is only a document for start...and it does not keep linked to new documents based on it.
Or you try via script (do not know how further it would help) or try the alternative given by Jean.

  • Need to select and move images across multiple pages...

    Hi,
I am using Indesign CS2 on a Windows machine and have a 25 page document with 4-up photos (4"X6") on individual pages. I used the ImageCatalog javascript to load these images so I don't seem to have any control from the Master page. I would like to group and move these images to a different location on their own pages.
Do you know how to select these images across multiple pages? Or can a simple script be written to process this task?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    -Greg

    Hi Greg,
A script can certainly do what you want to do--but you have to be a bit more specific. Do you want to move them to different pages in some predefined way, or do you just want to adjust them a bit on the pages they're already on?
    Thanks,
    Ole

  • Assigning multiple color labels to one image in Aperture?

Is there a way to assign more than one color label to an image? I suppose I could use a third color to signify what "color 1" and "color 2" together mean, but that's a bit confusing...
    Thank you,
    David

Yeah, I use keywords extensively, and absolutely understand their value, as you highlight, but find that colored labels are more convenient for certain things. For example, I can very quickly mark (with the labels keyboard shortcuts) images without opening the Inspector and typing in keywords, and subsequently find images without creating a smart album, simply through their color "halos". (It's a "dumbed-down" process, to be sure, but it works when you're feeling lazy!)
Thank you for the response, and for submitting the request for multiple color labels.

  • PRINT ENLAGED IMAGE ACROSS MULTIPLE PAGES

I have a scanned image that I want to print at 4 times its original size across multiple pages. Is there any known way to do this?

    Thanks for the info, guys.
I don't have InDesign installed. I'll consider installing it, but it's sad that we have to install an entire app to get functionality for Adobe graphics programs that even browsers offer routinely. Jeez, Firefox spans pages automatically.
If you have a graphic larger than the page and you don't opt to resize it, Photoshop should offer to clip the overflow or print multiple pages. And ideally, to print multiple pages with an optional overlap.
I would have thought this was in version 1. But then again, Photoshop didn't have a thumbnail browser until what, version 7?

  • W520 External Color Calibrator stopped working with updated Pantone v1.1 software

Can someone from Lenovo help me with this issue? Lenovo updated the color calibrator software in Aug 2012. They broke an external color calibrator working. L1/2 has been completely unhelpful. I also escalated to customer service with little result except that they say it is not Lenovo software and they do not have to support it! Unacceptable, the software isprovided by Lenovo. Lenovo doc also says an external color calibrator is supported. Lenovo needs to take responsibility for fixing this. Here are the email chains. I really want a refund or someone to ensure this package that Lenovo distributes is fixed!

I do not want this case closed and disagree. This is Lenovo provided software and according to Lenovo an external calibrator is supported. I want someone to take responsibility for getting this fixed. Lenovo has provided this software and needs to work with the vendor to ensure it works. Who do I need to speak to in management? I do not appreciate the way support has just shuttled this around and nothing has gotten done.

Please be advised that I have taken this case assigned to Doris. Lenovo is not able help you with this issue, We cannot provide support for a third party product.  The calibrator you are using is supported by X-Rite; any issues with the device need to be addressed by them,

Error with latest update to Pantone Color Calibrator Software (v1.1) and Eye one external calibrator   09-19-201211:39 AM - edited 09-20-201209:10 AM Hi. Can someone have a look at the Pantone 1.1 package. I am using an eye one display calibrator with the updated Pantone software and the calibration does not work. I get an error about an 8 bit image missing (have attached a screenshot). The calibration is not correct and Windows Photoviewer is pink. This was working OK with the v1.0 of the software (no longer on the w520 driver page). The error message is "There was an error loading the specified profile. Please make sure the image has an embedded profile and it is an 8-bit image." This was working fine before the update to v1.1. Thanks

    I am getting the runaround!!!
    Hi Doris,
I just left you a voice mail. One of the reasons I bought this laptop was for 3d photography. If I cannot use an external color calibrator and display then the laptop is not fit for purpose for the reasons I bought it. This software is ONLY available from Lenovo. According to Lenovo’s own doc, and the software’s doc, an external color calibrator is SUPPORTED. Lenovo needs to step to the plate and fix this. Not ME. If Lenovo needs to go to Pantone, or x-rite, then they Need to do that. Lenovo provided software that is not available to the public from x-rite or Pantone, and the software is to support Lenovo provided hardware (least so far as the internal calibrator), this software ALSO supports an external calibrator for use with an external display. The software supports both internal and external, and I would like to use my external display for 3d photography. This needs to be fixed please.
What are we going to do to resolve this? At his point of the runaround I’ve been getting I would like a complete refund.
    Thanks,
    Christopher

    Hi Kelli,
As you know the ‘software’ purchase is by virtue of purchasing the laptop with the color calibrator. Are you saying you will refund my cost for the calibrator? I don’t think you quite get how much time I have spent with support with this laptop. I have had multiple issues with the it. The calibrator, failed BT adapter, Sudden Shutdown syndrome (where the machine would just shutoff on its own –well documented in the Lenovo forums and I have at least a dozen emails on this issue) as well as many issues with the Displayport connection and an external 3d display for which I spent months working with Nvidia to resolve. This laptop has wasted a huge amount of my time. The support has been atrocious.
I would like a refund for 1. The laptop 2. The external color calibrator I cannot use because the software from Lenovo does not work (this package is NOT available from x-rite as well –It is sold to Lenovo). I have a receipt for the color calibrator and would be happy to provide that.
    Thank you,
    Christopher

  • Help and suggestions for color scheme for multiple flavor package design

I need help choosing colors for a multiple flavor food product line.
My objective in this post is to know how to create or acquire the palette I will need in order to proceed with design, mock ups, marketing collateral etc.
This project requires a color scheme that has enough contrast and variation to represent up to 24 flavors of food packages per type or line of products. Each product flavor or flavor combination (the name of the item, such as Cherry Cocoa Almond or Apricot Vanilla Bean etc.) in the line will be represented by a single color. The product packaging will be white on solid color. The medium will be laser print on gloss label stock.
The problem is that many flavors will use similar colors. Chocolate items will have different hues of browns and Maple or Nut flavors will also use brown tones. Likewise Orange, Apricot and Mango will use similar hues of orange etc. I know the problem could be solved with dual or multiple colors but I do not have that option for this project. All of the packaging is white on single color. There are no accent colors used.
I need to generate the palette before designing the packaging in order to create mock ups for print and then photography for print marketing collateral and internet marketing assets etc.
Does anyone have a good strategy for this or know of any resources available?
    I am using:
    Dell Precision T1700 (64-bit)
Windows 7 Professional (Service Pack 1)
Dual screens (not calibrated to Pantone or printer)
    Printer: Konica Minolta bizhub c224e
Pantone+ Color Bridge Coated and Uncoated book
Adobe CC, AI, PS, ID etc.
I am printing onto gloss labels for mock ups and will be using images for web.
I would also be interested in knowing how to calibrate these devices.
    Thanks!

When it comes to design and design sense, sometimes just the name of the item could generate ideas.  There really is no right or wrong way to come up with concepts.  But, reaching out to other people is a good way of going about it.  In product development, I always recommend putting together some sort of focus group and brainstorm ideas back and forth.  In larger corporate product departments you would have product managers defining their product descriptions.  You might have a marketing group head get involved.  Well, I know I am not telling you anything you didn't already know.  I'm just saying that, as a designer, I always present my ideas to a few people to get feedback.  And, based on that, I can then further develope the idea or dump it and start over.  I recently was involved with a new product development and came up with some really great conceptuals.  But, then I was told by a product manager that sometimes you have to roll-out something preliminary and, in a few years of selling tons of great items, you then revamp the entire line with a tag that reads "new and improved".  This might work in your case where you have limited resources initially.  Hope you do well.  You could always post screen grabs of what you are thinking and we could give you feedback, too.  Just a thought.

  • How can I correct for 2 different color temperatures in one image?

    Hi,
In indoor architectural photography one may encounter mixed color temperatures in one image. If one could use gels and lamps to replace incoming natural daylight and force a uniform color temperature (for instance tungsten) then the problem would go away. Yet, sometimes this is not possible or practical and I was exploring what could be accomplished within Photoshop. Here is my proposal ( or beginning of it):
    shoot RAW
generate 2 versions of the image, each corrected for one of the color temperatures present (say WB dropper in "should be neutral" area where daylight dominates and another WB dropper in "should be neutral" area where tungsten dominates)
open them in Photoshop and move one of them as a layer on top of the other version
Try to blend the two layers
in one example, I used Hue blending mode and the photo fixed itself!! However this is not generalizable to other images
I also tried BlendIf for harder images but with no success
I presume selection is then a must which brings up the question:HOW CAN I SELECT DEPENDING ON COLOR TEMPERATURE? I mean, the layer where WB = daylight looks orange-casted in the areas where the main light source is tungsten, while the layer where WB = tungsten looks blue-casted in the areas lit mainly by sunlight. I must believe there should exist a best approach to select say the blue-casted areas or the orange-casted areas, and that approach should be simple if it somehow takes into consideration the predominant cast. I have tried Select Color Range but not very successfully. I just feel there must be a simpler way, taking advantage of the present casts.
    Masks seem also useful
All feedback will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Juan

I'm a professional web designer (but don't let that put you off) who uses Dreamweaver and also handcodes HTML & CSS websites at work on a PC, but having got a new Mac for home use I thought I'd give iWeb a go for a personal site hosted on .Mac, showcasing my music and film efforts, that I didn't want to have to think about coding.
I've built a short little site using the attractive 'Travel' theme, just 5 or 6 pages so far, and have not yet added any multimedia content. However, it seemed to take ages to upload it when I published it to .Mac. So then I went to view it, and it was soooo sloooow to download each page, even on my 4mb cable connection. I know it's a fairly graphically-rich theme, but still!
I noticed that it was redrawing the navigation menu each time... and upon close inspection of the HTML code using Safari's 'View Source' to my horror I found out that that each page has a seperate '_files' folder that contains multiple versions of files that are also used in other pages - including navigation buttons and background images. I also saw that every element has styling applied to it 'inline' in the code, rather than in a single seperate style-sheet.
To confirm this I published it to a folder on my hard drive and checked it all out. What a mess!
As a WYSIWYG web page editor iWeb is great but it's an undisputable fact that the HTML markup and CSS code it produces is absolutely appaling. What's worse though is that it also renders whole swaithes of text as images and that it does create seperate folders for each pages content including images, CSS code and navigation buttons - so even though the same images and code are used throughout the site for the background and buttons and layout, they are written out as seperate files and have to be reloaded with every page!!!
This means that the .Mac server must be getting hammered and webpages are very slow to download and slow to render in Safari - it's almost like dialup when I'm viewing my iWebsite, and like I said, I've got a 4mb cable connection!
Looking at the code iWeb produces, it is good to see that tables are not used for layout, and that's one thing in its favour. But surely the whole point of providing 'themed' templates for users is that the same content is used across the site and therefore doesn't need to be created multiple times - one of the benefits of using CSS stylesheets. Why doesn't iWeb create a single stylesheet and make efficient use of repeated images instead of creating multiple instances of the same file for each page?
Perhaps there is a setting somewhere I've missed. If so, let me know someone!
It is a great WYSIWYG editor, but behind the scenes it's not efficient, it's not clean and simple and it's certainly not attractive - and I'm surprised at that coming from Apple! I know iWeb is a great tool for beginners and I'm a picky professional, but if I was Joe Public First Time Web Designer I'd be very annoyed by this.
Clean it up and sort it out Mr Jobs!
PS: Also, where does iWeb store the website whilst it's in production? I can't find it anywhere?

Your iWeb Site is stored not on your iDisk, but on a file named Domain.sites in your ~/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb/ Folder.
If , for whatever reason, you wipe your HD and/or lose this file (Get a new computer, Re-Install your OS, Stolen Laptop, Crashed HD, Etc.) without backing-up your Domain.sites file then you will have to re-build your iWeb sites from scratch again.
Of course you can edit your Published HTML files in a different program such as Dreamweaver or even Text Edit. You just can't edit Published HTML files in iWeb. Not at this time at least.
Use iWebBackup to backup your Domain file to a Blank CD or DVD. Backing up your Domain file to another folder on your computer is not fully backing it up. If your computer gets stolen you still lost the file but if you have your Domain file burned onto a CD you have a backup!
    Download iWebBackup Here
You can use iWebExtender to automatically consolidate your files into one folder and delete multiple images.

  • Can you edit multiple images from a PDF in photoshop?

I scan a lot of old publications with images and drawings. The images are in greyscale, but my scanner produces better results set to color. As such, I have to convert the images to greyscale in Photoshop from Acrobat. I have several PS actions that make this process easier, but I wish there was a way to select multiple images from a page or PDF file and run the actions on them (a batch) instead of one at a time. Is there? Or perhaps another method than what I am doing?

I recommend that you scan first, save as TIFF, do any desired correction, and only then make PDFs. Scanning direct to PDFs is great for simple uncomplicated workflows, but a liability when correction is needed.

  • I am using Aperture 3 to edit RAW and JPEG photo images on my Macbook.  I am having color printing issues with my Canon MP640 Pixma color printer.  The image I see on my macbook is not reciprocated in printing from my printer?

My issue is that I am not getting print quality compared to the image I see on my screen.  Just recently it has been very wishie washie.  My printer is supposed to be excellent for producing color prints
I have contacted Canon support but they told me that the signals that are sent to the printer originate from an Apple product, therefore, it is an Apple mac problem not there's.  I am wondering if my on screen proofing and/or printing profiles are correctly set.  I notice that in 'print profiles' there are nine different options for printing from my particular printer.  How confusing is that?
I have also found that when I choose a high standard print option my photo print comes out very red.
Can some kind person please help me?  I don't seem to be getting any help from anyone else!  Thanks in anticipation.

You didn't mention any color calibration being done on your monitor.  This is an essential part of any color-correct workflow.  What are you using to calibrate your monitor (and your printer)?
Print profiles (for soft-proofing as well as printing) are for specific combinations of paper & printer.  The nine you have are each, most likely, for a common paper (perhaps mfr'd by Canon) to be used with your printer.
I don't know what you mean when you say "I choose a high standard print option".
Have you read the User Manual chapter on printing?

There is also a good appendix on calibration:
