Color calibration problems on mac pro

I have a bunch of quicktimes I captured via firewire from a 1200a deck. These quicktimes I converted to Quicktime PNG via compressor so they could be opened on a PC as well. When I open the exact same quicktime file on PC it appears much brighter than when I open it on my Mac. And I dont just mean it appears brighter to the eye, but when I hover my mouse cursor over pixels the values are much brighter (I tested this in aftereffects on both machines).
The PNG and DVCPROHD quicktimes give the exact same values on my mac (unsurprisingly), and when I view them in aftereffects or FCP they look quite dark (much darker than what I saw at the shoot). But when I view them in quicktime player they look brighter - just like how they look on PC (normally exposed). BUT when I do a screen grab using CMDCTRL+SHIFT4, and open the grab in photoshop, it looks much darker again! with the darker values!
Both PC and Mac monitors are calibrated with the eyeone Display 2 - but I dont think that is really the problem, because the actual pixel values I'm reading with aftereffects or photoshop are much darker on the mac! I have a feeling that the values the mac is giving are wrong, because everything looks really underexposed, the blacks are completely crushed etc... but I'm sure on the shoot there was much more detail in the blacks and everything was exposed properly.
Any ideas what is going on? it seems like some wierd color profile thing... but would that actually change the pixel info in the quicktime file?

Hi memosan-
I completely understand. My experience is with medical imaging, where each monitor is absolutely required to match the other. Please step back and look at the bigger picture.
You are making the leap of faith that the way each system interprets pixel values is based upon the identical math, which it cannot possibly be. Each system will do what I thinks it needs to do to display a certain pixel value based on your calibration to a desired result.
When you think of displaying the image, you must think about what happens after the data is read off of the storage device and assigned to the graphics system and prepared for display. Up until that very instant the data is identical. What happens next will determine where those white values start differentiating.
When you calibrate a monitor you essentially build a table within your system that the graphics card uses to calculate a specific value to display based on the capabilities of that particular system. Even with identical systems those numbers will be different system to system. Maximum white will equal one number, maximum black another and so on.
When you read a pixel value it is based upon the math that the system is doing in order to display the image that you have requested.
If any part of the system is different, the math that it must do to obtain a particular pixel value will be radically different than the next system. If the temperature gradients are not the same, or if the actual pixel depth of one monitor is 10 bits and another 12, or if they cannot display the same black value the results will all be the same in that pixel values will be different, sometimes very radically.
The only way to actually demonstrate this is for you to use the same NTSC or PAL monitor, matching bit depth cards in each system, calibrate each system to that monitor without adjusting the monitor, then display the same image from the same file and see what the values read. My experience would tell me that only then will you be able to get numbers that are close.
This has everything to do with the monitor displays and your calibration and your different systems.
Luck-

Is the July 9 internet issue a problem for Mac Pro users or has Apple taken care of this issue in updates?

It is a only a problem for users affected by the malware that replaces their DNS IPs on their macs. They already have a serious problem which they should fix. Follow the url in sig's post to determine if you are infected and how to remove it.

  • Best display calibration unit for mac pro under $100?

I have come to the conclusion that calibration by eye is a suckers bet.  So looking at calibration units, for example spyder 3 express.
Wondering what units work best with mac pro (2008 8 core).
    Thanks for replies.

My experience is that it comes down to multiple factors. The monitor, the application you're using, along with the color profiles you're using.
I use a 30" Dell display hooked to a 5770 graphics card and I make sure the color profiles are consistant over the applications I use.
At one stage I bought a Huey Color Correction device. I eventually put it on the shelf and forgot about it.
My conclusion is, after years of consistently good color printing results, is that if you've got the components right like a good monitor and working with consistant color and press profiles then the "Expert Mode" is Apple's Color Calibration in System Preferences is completely adequate.
I spend every day color correcting in our graphic design business and we get terrific, predictable results.

  • Windows XP Installation problem on Mac Pro (Early 2009)

I am wanting to install Windows XP on 400GB of my hard drive in Bay 2
I have 2 hard drives in my Mac Pro. The 1st one came pre-installed and I got a 1TB Western Digital SATA and formatted it as Mac OS Journaled. I used The Bootcamp Utility to make a Windows partition on my 2nd hard drive.
Once I do that I insert the Windows XP SP3 install disc to install it and it says it cannot install it because some random file is missing that is a random bunch of letter and numbers and it says I should erase the partition and try formatting it again. While I'm still using the Windows XP install disc I try doing this it does not work and then when I boot back into Snow Leopard the Bootcamp partition is still there.
Is this not possible? Or is the only way to install Windows XP on the hard drive in bay 2 by formatting the entire drive for Windows?

Since the Vista recovery works fine there must be a problem with the XP installation CD created by nLite. And yes this installation CD was not good. I created it with all current Security Patches and with all available Toshiba Satellite A200 Windows XP drivers. Obvisiously i picked up a wrong driver. May a 64-bit one.
    I tried this:
First I created a new Windows XP disc only with the Toshiba Storage Manager driver. This XP Installation works.
Then I created again a Windows XP disc will all Security Patches and all Toshiba Drivers. I doubble checked that I did NOT picked up a 64-bit driver. And this disc works. Thanks all.

  • Problem with Mac Pro Video Playback Stutter

I just purchased a new Mac Pro (2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 6GB of Memory) and I'm having an issue with video playback. Whenever I play videos (in Quicktime, online, or in iTunes) the video will freeze briefly every few seconds, causing an annoying stutter that drives me crazy. Sometimes if I restart the computer the video will play normally, but not always. It is quite frustrating for me to have this issue, because I do a lot of video work and would also like to use the machine for watching movies on the Cinema Display I got with it.
Does anyone have any idea what might cause a problem like this? I got the NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 card with 512 MB of VRAM. Thanks in advance for any help.

Comparison of GTX 285 amd 8800GT in Mac OS and Windows XP:
    http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.asp?m=100785469&mpage=1&key=&#100785469
.... will be interesting to see if improved drives help close the gap but 20% (most of the time, drivers will show 5-10% at best in a single jump, in some apps).
Having looked at and used alternatives, helps gives me some perspective. I use to assume or think QuickTime was or must be "it" but there are other apps that can play back video with more finesse, more user control. Maybe why QuickTimeX is getting some buzz.
People will build PCs to run 3 x 285s in SLI and try to achieve 175 fps, output to HDTV or something for full 'immersion' field effect.

  • Monitor problems with Mac Pro and Leopard

I can't turn energy saver off.I have two LCD monitors connected, one 19" Viewsonic VX924 and one 30" Dell3007WFPHC . I set energy saver:Put the display(s) to sleep when computer is inactive for Never.
Yet I can turn the monitors off and back on later and it's put the Viewsonic to sleep ,but not the Dell.
I then open the energy saver system preferences again and low and behold it's changed itself back to sleep at 26 minutes.Ghost in the machine? Why doesn't it put the Dell to sleep as well?????Why does it keep changing back to 26 minutes regardless of how many times I set it to never and lock it?
I even tried just using the Viewsonic only and setting to never,I also trashed a pref file I thought was energy saver , still same behavior, this is a REALLY big hassle ,because I have to restart every time just to get this monitor back up.
    Any clues?
    Many thanks!
    Hayes
    Memphis,Tn.

I think there are some powermanagement prefs in your account and in /Library but I also read of problems with ViewSonic VX back when the Mac Pro came out in 9/06.
I would give the SMC button a good 'kick' and see if that helps.
And when you restart, this is normal safe restart, or forced?
SMC button, this is restart button on the inside of the mac?
It's always a safe restart, the whole computer doesn't go down, it's just the viewsonic power light blinks on and off and there is not much I can do to get back up quickly, but restart. I have played with display settings and got it back before, but that's hit or miss and very time consuming.
Thanks you so so much for your help and suggestions!

  • SERIOUS Problem with mac pro and kernel panics

Hi guys, I have a mac pro with 6 gigabytes of RAM + a RAID 0+1 system with 4 750 gigabytes HD's. ( 2 drives work in stripped mode, and the other 2 drives mirror them )
I was experiencing some frecuent kernel panics when using final cut or trying to watch DVD's a few weeks ago. I saved some error logs then and uploaded them to my e-mail. The problem is that now the frequency of the panics is so high that the computer has turned unusable, it reaches the desktop without panics, but when I click finalcut and it starts opening , it panics all the time, if I start to open folders, it panics, anything I try = panic.
Weeks ago I made the Apple Hardware test, testing the memory a lot and the memory seemed to be fine,
Could you guys help me to identify the source of this?, I am desperate because the MacPro is my Working tool. Is there a way to check the hard drives also? ( remember I have raid 0+1 )
Here are the error logs that I managed to capture.

What you mention is really interesting , maybe I could try to benchmark the card very hard to see if I get the panics there. I will try that for sure, because my RAID wasn't actually a 0+1. It's what they call a RAID 10 , ( two groups of mirrored drives, + striped )
It's like this post in macosrumors, but instead of two groups of striped disks, the big group is striped, and I got two smaller mirrored groups.
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=445731
And I think that sould be working just fine without the RAID PCI-X card right ? ( maybe I'm wrong here , that's why I need your input guys . )

The Mac Pro 3,1 has error correcting code memory and memory problems are very distinctive. That is not a memory problem.
It is complex and puzzling. What other symptoms are you seeing?
The error you got is that processor(s) were no longer responding to interrupts. This could be caused by a bad processor, or other Hardware problems, including a bad graphics processor. It is possible that a bad PCIe card could be involved.
This error does not happen in a normal Mac OS X 10.6.8 kernel. But you are not running a normal Mac OS X kernel, because you have added several invasive kernel extensions:
    com.ni.driver.NiViPciK 4.2.0 - last loaded 22962157861
    com.paceap.kext.pacesupport.snowleopard 5.9.1
    com.ni.driver.nipalk 2.1.0f1
    com.digidesign.iokit.DigiIO 8.0.3f1
    com.line6.driver.xtaudio 4.7.1
    com.digidesign.iokit.DigiDal 8.0.3f1
You should first be certain that each and every one of them is the correct version for this version of Mac OS X. If that does not solve the problem, you will need to remove them all, then slowly add them back over time, keeping track of when your problems recur.

  • Problems mirroring mac pro on TV with apple TV3

I just got an Apple TV3.  It works with the typical Apple TV stuff, except Mirroring. I'm running Mavericks on a Mac Pro (2012) and there is 1 minute or so delay between what I seen on my Mac on what the TV displays.  I follow the exact steps people show on Youtube with the same bad results. Any suggestions before I exchange this unit? Thanks

I just solved the problem!  There were two issues: (1) The power cord to the DSL modem was broken ... it was turning the modem ON/OFF randomly-- I replaced it, but the Apple TV still didn't work well.  (2) The router (Linksys E2500)  I replaced the OEM firmware for the appropriate Tomato firmware version, and after completing its setup ... Voila! the Apple TV worked as expected ... it's a beauty!

  • Problem with mac pro 2x2.93 GHZ Dual Core and Mini Display Port

Finally I see the button to create new post!
I would like to explain a problem I have with my mac pro 2x2.93 GHZ Dual Core Intel Xeon processors and the ATI Radeon HD 4870.
I have two 30 "Apple. After buying the new Mac Pro is one of the two monitors, only with the monitor all black, small horizontal lines.
This happens only to the monitor connected to the mini display port... So if you reverse it monitors the problem always moves on the board connected to the Mini Display Port.
Apple has already changed my video card and the adapter but the problem is still there.
Someone can tell me if it is the ATI Radeon HD 4870 that has problems to have two monitors 30 "? Or it could be that the mini display port that is hard to read the two monitors and when the background is black (RGB-255-255-255) makes these lines?
Through the Apple store I then bought a new card (EVGA GeForce GTX 285 "). Unfortunately, after three weeks of waiting is not yet arrived. Proof that I want to do before returning to telephone assistance is whether on a card that has two dual-link DVI ports normal all goes well.
Sorry for the repetition of messages, but my English is very bad. This is the first time I connect to this site support

In any case, this system does not support two 30".
I honestly don't think the 4870 with that adapter can support two 30". Just using the adapter itself would not give me the normal resolutions on my 30, where as the DVI port did. Luckily for me the adapter worked fine on my 20".
Truly I don't know why Apple would sell a card and not say just what displays it can power.
So I worked around my problem fine but I chose to get the 285 also. My question to you though is, did Apple make you pay for it? Was it part of a deal with them because the Radeon didn't work? You might want to talk to them about that. That is one expensive card.

  • WinXP Home install problems on Mac Pro

    Hi,
I have a brand new Mac Pro Dual 2.66GHz. It came with a second GeForce 7300GT installed. I installed additional 2x 1GB FB DIMMs. Everything worked fine, and I installed all new updates, including the new EFI Firmware update Apple introduced yesterday. After the OS X setup was complete, I downloaded BootCamp 1.1.2 and followed the instructions to create a 30GB partition for Windows XP Home. I insert the WinXP CD and let BootCamp restart the computer. WinXP boots and the blue screen appears and a bunch of drivers get loaded. After that I get the first install screen, and on that point the keyboard is not responding anymore. I can press "return" as often as I want, the install does not start. It also not responds to F3 or R as written on the screen. Its the first time Windows gets installed on this Mac Pro. I also tried to connect the keyboard directly to the computer (before it was on the cinema display hub). I tried to remove the RAM to have only the standard 1GB RAM installed. Nothing worked.
Anyone have a hint to get this done? Thanka a lot on advance!
    Marty

I already thougt about that, but Apple put a note on the page:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/firmwarerestorationcd12.html
"Note: This CD cannot be used to return an Intel-based Macintosh computer’s firmware to a previous version if a successful update has already been performed."
So because I did a successful fimware update, I can not go back to the old firmware! There is no way back!

  • HT1338 Problem: My Mac Pro is heating and the fan produce a lot of noise, what shall I do? I got the new Montain Lion

    Dear best Users,
What shall I do? My Mac Pro 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo/OS X 10.8 13-inch 2009= Is heating and producing a lot of noise with the internal Fan.
    Best,
    Dario van der Lündin

If you can, open Activity Monitor and see what's using up all the %CPU.
If its kernel_task, shutdown immediately and do a PRAM reset, like this:
    1. Power down the machine.
    2. Locate the following keys on your keyboard in preparation for Step 4:
    ‘command’ – ‘option’ – ‘P’ – ‘R’
    3. Press the ‘power on’ button.
    4. Immediately – and before the grey screen appears – hold down ‘command-option-P-R’ all together.
    5. Keep them held down until you’ve heard the start-up chime twice. After you release them you should hear it again, and hopefully your Mac will boot up as it should and with the kernel_task process back to normal.
If that's not it, try quitting whatever the process is by selecting it in the Activity monitor window, then 'Quit' in the task bar. If the process refuses to quit, post back with the name of the process.
