Color correction doesnt come through well on DVD project on TV

I burned my short film onto a DVD and played it back on a SD television. The film has many color grading tweaks and I noticed that they barely come through on the TV. Definitely not representative of what i have ont he timeline. Any clue as to why this is?

Does your monitor show you the Rec.709 colorspace? And is it fully calibrated?
If not, you're not getting WYSIWYG, so there's no way you can know what the output is going to look like without burning a DVD and playing it. Then you can iterate, making changes in PPro and burning more DVDs, until you get what you want.
Very few computer monitors can show you Rec.709. To get that, you need either a production monitor, or a fully calibrated HDTV (look for one that's easy to calibrate (supports ISFccc Calibration Mode). If you use a TV, you need to make sure you're getting the proper signal to it also, but PPro using the NVIDIA graphics boards can do this without extra hardware (driving the HDMI port). If you set the driver up correctly.
But if you don't have a production monitor, or a calibrated HDTV, you're really just shooting in the dark when it comes to color correction and especially color grading. Not what you want to hear I know. But that's the current state of the art.
I'm pretty certain it doesnt show the rec.709 colorspace. My monitor isnt even widescreen. I actually had no idea about the rec.709 space until just now when you mentioned it. I am a vidnoob hence the screen name
I have a geforce 560TI card. Do you know if I can buy a cable that goes from the card to maybe an S video adapter I can plug into the TV to then color correct my project on the TV when doing things intended for TV playback? There's a DVI port on the back of my graphics card and my TV has an S video female port.

    hi,
i have gone thru all ur posts and tried to exactly as posted.
got linux81701.tar and also jdk118v3 from blackdown and then first set all the required variables and then installed jdk118 onto /usr/local/java and then untarred the or8i distribution.
then set the glibc2.1 env script as mentioned in the posts and also the export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 and all that stuff.
next when i start the .runInstaller program the screens come and everything seems to be fine and then the product list is loaded and then it asks me to run some script i do that as well and then it asks me the type of installation i want.
i select typical and click on next and the entire installation either hangs or terminates. Is this some problem with my installation process or something else???
i've tried this n number of times and the same thing happens irrespective of which type of installaion i try
    please help

    Go to www.oracle.com.
click on downloads in the upper right.
Select 8i Enterprise edition in the select product box.
    select 8.1.7 for linux.
You should see the glibc patch on this page.

  • Color Correction in photoshop through scripting

    Dear Sir
    I am sathya Murthy
Again i have some problem which should answered by scripting experts like you.
    1. I have lots of images to be colour corrected.
    2. Each image requires different type of corrections manually.
I need a scripting which does following things to me
    1. As i run the script it should ask where photos or images are there.
    2. As I show the folder it should create a sub folder in the images folder where photos are there
for colour corrected photos to move there. only uncorrected photos should be there in the images folder
colour corrected photos should move to new sub folder created with the name Colour Correction Finished.
    3. First I want to Apply
         1. Auto Colour
        After Applying Auto Colour
       I Want to Apply
          2. Levels
where I will manually adjust the levels after i Finish off with levels
          I want to apply
          3. Curves
Here also i manually adjust the curves
       Last I want to apply
          4. Brightness Contrast
Here also i manually adjust the brightness and contrast
    Note: Again I say
The order for photo correction should be same the steps in correcting photos should not be interchanged.
               1. Auto Colour
               2. Levels
               3. Curves
               4. Brightness Contrast
After I finish with all these the photo should be saved and moved to new sub folder named Colour Correction Finished
and start with the next image.
Some times the image is corrected with auto colour and brightness contrast this time i must be able to cancel levels and curves
    some times brightness contrast also.
If i cancel all the four opening of the next image in folder should be stopped and the opened image should not be saved or moved to
Colour Correction Finished Folder and i must be able to start from where i have stopped correcting the images. if Colour Correction Finished folder
is created don't ask to create the folder again.
If there is a same file existing in the Colour Correction Finished Folder Prompt me by saying file exists save it with another name.
Scripting for this will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Dear Sathya Murthy
You wrote that your a Newbie to scripting. Are you also a Newbie to Photoshop?   Are you a Programmer?  If your not a Programmer I think you should look at Photoshop Action feature.  Actions are easy to record and edit.  Adobe also supplies a Image Processor Script to help you process your images without having to get into scripting.   This Script will process your image files you point it at and save  output images files where you point it to.  You can have it include Actions you create during the process.  There is also a Free Image Processor Pro script you can download from Rusell Brown's web site the has more function.  It is a simple mater to record action that will do Photoshop steps like  Auto Colour,  Levels, Curves, Brightness Contrast etc. These steps can be made interactive or use recorded setting for these adjustments.  No programming knowledge is needed.
Please reply with more information about your Photoshop useage in knowledge.

  • Premiere Pro CS3 then After Effects CS3 for Color Correction?

    Hello All,
I'm at a bit of a loss here, it seems like it's a no brainer to be able to do this. I'm trying to edit my film in Premiere and then use After Effects to do color correction using Color Finesse 2. But there doesn't seem to be ANY way to keep a project so you can continue to edit in premiere while you also keep all your color correction??
You can do color correction in AE and export a premiere project but premiere won't recognize the Color Finesse Filter so you lose all you color correction!
Or I can edit the whole project in premiere and open it in after effects to do color correction, but then if there is a single edit change that needs to be done in premiere again i've once again lost my Color Correction to bring it back.
Is this really the case that I can't use these expensive packages together this way? It seems like there has to be a solution! If Adobe just made it so Premiere kept the "links" to your filters in the project, instead of killing an unrecognizable one. Then when you opened it back in after effects after your edit your Color Correction would still be there.
    Any one have any advice?
    Thanks,
    -Ethan

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, all good ideas.
Aanarav, Your idea to just get Color Finesse for premiere I suppose I could do. It's $545 which isn't exactly pocket change, but it would probably be worth it, if there is another way other than breaking the bank book for software I already own i'd like to try to get away with it.
    Steven Gotz
Dynamic link is unfortunately a feature only of the production studio package which is like $1100 upgrade from what I have...so that's kinda out of the question for me.
    Jon Sands
Great idea here. I really thought it might work since premiere seems to use what are called after effects plugin files too. But after copying and pasting for a while it doesn't look like it actually sees it as a plugin anywhere I paste it. :( If anyone knows of a way to get that to work I would be seriously grateful!
I guess it sounds like the only way out is to spend cash, sigh such is so often the case is seems.

  • Color Correction + DVD/MPEG Compression Produced Noise

I recently color corrected a 3-hour rock concert using FCP and a broadcast monitor. When played from the timeline the concert looks great however after outputting, MPEG compression and authoring a DVD there's video noise over the image. Almost snow like but different. I'd post a screengrab but I can't seem to take one in DVD Player. Any advice?

That's exactly right Jonathan, you need to add the 2:3 pulldown, and I can tell you all why. (I read the post from Max Average, but I'm not commenting that separately)
The DVD specification simply does not support video marked as 23.98 fps (which is how Apple wants to call it) or even 23.976 fps (which is what MPEG-2 calls it). This means that for NTSC DVDs you can only use MPEG-2 video files which are marked as 29.97 fps. This is true whether your encoder (like Compressor) is letting you be aware of it or not. There is no "native 23.98 frame rate" on a DVD and the right way of making the decoder believe it is 29.97 instead, is to use 2:3 pulldown. Any other method would just be wasting bandwidth/bitrate or picture quality, depending on which way you want to look at it.
The 2:3 pulldown process, as specified by MPEG-2, is a way for the encoder of describing to the decoder which of its already decoded fields it should be repeating (displaying once more) and when. These field repetitions are designed to increase the interlaced displayed frame rate from 23.976 to 29.97. This "new" frame rate must be explicitely written into the .m2v stream, to be accepted by a DVD authoring tool, e.g., DVD SP.
I am sure many of you may wonder why it is called "pulldown" when in fact the frame rate seems to be going "up" from 24 to 30, as I did myself back in the nineties;-)
The way to wrap ones head around that, is to think about what whould happen if you just mapped 24 FPS film frames onto the NTSC TV standard which has to display frames at nearly 30 fps on a TV. Of course the movie would run 25% FASTER on a TV than it did at the cinema/picture theatre. In that perspective, the solution had to be to SLOW DOWN (pulldown) the presentation speed on a TV. The engineers of that time (this was long before color TV was even invented)
were faced with a need for film (Hollywood movies) to be translated for TV broadcasts). Of course they could not change the 30 fps used for TV broadcasts (29.97 fps came much later when colors were added;-), so they had to come up with a scheme which made each film frame seem to last 25% longer on the TV screen, than it would have otherwise. "Pulling down" the display frequency from, the physical 30 fps to match the experienced 24 fps was accomplished by letting every other frame be displayed for 50% longer on the TV. On average that is of course 25% longer (slower) which was the goal.
I may be monitoring this thread for further comments.

  • Color correcting for youtube vs DVD

Does it make since that one would need to color correct a video differently for youtube vs. a DVD?  Shooting 1080p footage and posting to youtube.  I noticed I was having to up my mids and highlights quit a bit, (highlights even would go past the 100% at times) otherwise the posted footage would look dark and dingy.  The file would look the same on my AppleTV.  Had to put the same video to DVD and the footage looked more like what the scopes were telling me, the mids and highlights needed to be brought back down to what I would call normal, otherwise everything looked to hot.  Am I missing something?

I tried authoring via creating DVD files in FCPX and then burning with Toast, as well as creating a MOV file and authoring with iDVD from an older machine.  Results were the same.  The HDTV I viewed the disk from are the same TV that I view my videos via AppleTV before posting to youtube.  I did have a Broadcast Safe filter on the video.  Good thought though.
It does make since that a DVD played from a DVD player has more restrictions then a file played via a computer or AppleTV or Youtube, but I just found it kind of an head scratcher and not sure that is the problem.  I'll try playing the DVD on a different setup and see it the results are the same.  Could be my DVD player.
The results were so differnet, that I just had to ask to see if there was something I was majorly missing.
I'll do some more testing.  But thanks for your input.

  • Best way to go from Final Cut to DVD preserving Color Corrections

What is the best way to take my video project from Final Cut and burn it on a DVD (using DVD Studio), I need to preserve the color corrections I have made (used an external video monitor)? Also my camera shoots at black level IRE 0 and I have edited it that way, but as we all know NTSC TVs use IRE 7.5 is there anyway DVD Studio or FCP can convert the IRE so it matches?

    from FC; export to compressor
In compressor, choose appropriate preset (i.e. best quality, >90 minutes, 16x9)
encode the sound as dolby 2 (if you choose "all" you'll get an extra aif file)
take the 2 files (video and audio) into dvd studio to encode.
Not sure about your IRE 7.5 question, I always assumed it was automatically converted but now you have me thinking...

  • Color Correction for DVD and online

I have a 13" SD TV hooked up to my mac working as a color correction monitor for FCE.
My question is: Should I always color correct using the TV monitor vs looking at the Canvas in FCE? What I'm seeing is the picture in the canvas is darker and more saturated then the view of the TV monitor. Is it best to trust the TV monitor vs the canvas? And should it make any difference if the final project is going to DVD vs online? I'm assuming the ending product (mov file) should look the same if the mov file is viewed from a computer vs on a TV from a DVD. In a nut shell, once the clip is color corrected using the ext monitor, should I be good to go no matter where the file ends up?
    Thoughts?
    Thanks so much

    Hi
I would take some photos with color miss match eg blue tint (Blå-Stick in Swedish)
and with other known color anomalities.
Put them in TimeLine and playback. View TV - corrected or as bad as from start.
I use a color corrected CRT-broad-cast monitor but prior to this a small TV and
this one did a good job.

The auxillary jack on my Itouch does not allow sound to come through with headphones, though it works in a dock as well as external speakers.  How can I fix this?

You can try the standard fixes of reset, restore from backup and restore to factory defaults to rule out a hsoftware proble.  Frequently it is to to a problem with the eadphone jack and the solution is to replace the jack.

  • Is there good training/information step-through on using the 3 way color correction in CS6?

I am looking to see if there is a good source of information about how to use the 3 way color correction in premier Pro CS6?  It's very complex and daunting when I first look at it, and I would like to figure out how to use it effectively for my underwater footage.

    FWIW:
Anyone planning on doing CC and Grading should consider learning a bit about color science as regards CC / Grading.
There are many good books from Colorists (eg Van Hurkman or Hullfish/Fowler ) and I am sure there is plenty on th e web  about this extensive and interesting topic.  A lot of CC info is very applicable and helpfult to photography as well.
These are the fundamentals and basics that apply to all CC/ Grading applications and  will make it easy to understand the "controls" as well as the techniques  required.
Without the basics...its very dififficult to progress in these apps.

  • My screen background color is off-white & this color comes through on the print page. Page Setup/Print Background is set off. How do I fix this? Problem first popped up with version 6, still there with version 8.0.1

    File/Page Setup/Format & Options/Options/Print Background (colors & images): Check box set off.
This setting does not work as my screen background color still comes through on the print preview & the print page.
Is this because the newer Firefox versions have blocked my graphics driver version?

See [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=683139 Bug 683139] – Using the 'High Contrast Black' 'Accessibility Option' in Win XP results in the screen colours being printed.
