Color correction flickering in playback

when I playback the project in fcp sent from color, there is flickering in the color in some parts of the timeline.
Here's what I did:
- From FCP I sent a sequence to Color using using ''send to color''.
- graded the clips in Color and sent it back to FCP using ''send to Final Cut Pro''
& What happens is when I playback the sequence in Final Cut Pro, there is flickering in the color (turns rapidly lighter and darker) of clips throughout the timeline. The flickering gets worse when I export from FCP to a .mov file.
Can anyone please help?

From FCP I sent a sequence to Color
This is not enough information. Sequence settings would get us started.

  • Serious problem with a color correction

    Ok so here´s the deal....
I have a 83.62 Gb quicktime movie file. It came from a  Black and White color corretion made in Scratch and it was delivered to me wit a Uncompressed 32-bit ARGB codec.
I need to work with it on FCP, so i compressed it to Apple Pro Res 422(HQ) and then imported it to final.
While in final cut, a played the commpressed clip on the viewer and .....(HERE´S THE TRICKY PART).....it losses the color correction on the playback, but as soon as i pause it, it recovers the color correction again.
I´ve asked a few friends about it and nobody seems to understand what´s going on. The clip recognizes the color correction ONLY WHILE PAUSED. Not on playback, not even if I play it the Quicktime application. I´m completly lost.
I have a Mac Pro 2x2.4 Ghz Intel Xeon , with a  6 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC memory and a ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB graphics card. With FCP7 running.
I will greatly aprecciate your advice on this one!

Besides the fact that FCP plays videos at low quality for resources sake, I would suggest you export a two second clip (with current settings) and check about colour correction in quick time. If there is a problem convert original again in compressor but this time in the colour tab select the HD 709 colour space. The 709 space manains grading across conversions.
I underlined the 422 and not the 422 HQ but you get the gist...

  • Fickering color correction on CS3

    Hi:
When I do some color correction on a video clip for the first few seconds the color correction flickers.
Even on a the final rendered video.
Anyone know why or how to prevernt it?

You are correct that MPEG-2 is not the best source material, but sometimes one has to use what is handed to them.
I like the Fast Color Corrector for most color work. Often, the Color Balance (quite limited), will be good enough, though not that often - depends on the scene. The Three-Way Color Corrector is even better, but does require a bit more work with the settings.
I'd give Fast Color Corrector a run. Do not hesitate to experiment with it, observing what it's providing you with. I find it very useful.
    Hunt
PS - I find the Auto (anything) to be pretty useless. About the same with the Auto Adjustments in Photoshop.
PPS - I normally do any Levels (not Auto Levels), and maybe Shadow & Highlight Effects BEFORE I use Fast Color Corrector. I'll then go back and tweak Levels and maybe S & H.

  • Color Correction for DVD and online

I have a 13" SD TV hooked up to my mac working as a color correction monitor for FCE.
My question is: Should I always color correct using the TV monitor vs looking at the Canvas in FCE? What I'm seeing is the picture in the canvas is darker and more saturated then the view of the TV monitor. Is it best to trust the TV monitor vs the canvas? And should it make any difference if the final project is going to DVD vs online? I'm assuming the ending product (mov file) should look the same if the mov file is viewed from a computer vs on a TV from a DVD. In a nut shell, once the clip is color corrected using the ext monitor, should I be good to go no matter where the file ends up?
    Thoughts?
    Thanks so much

    Hi
I would take some photos with color miss match eg blue tint (Blå-Stick in Swedish)
and with other known color anomalities.
Put them in TimeLine and playback. View TV - corrected or as bad as from start.
I use a color corrected CRT-broad-cast monitor but prior to this a small TV and
this one did a good job.

  • Lightroom 4 won't save color correction to .R3D file

Really didn't have problems until export. I'm amazed with how fast Lightroom plays playback on .r3d files. Anways after all the color correctrion is done I try to export the file to its original format (r3d) but upon playing the file in Red Cine-X, non of the color corrections I made are saved. It's as if I didn't edit the file at all. However if I choose to save the file as a H264 and play the file, all my corrections are saved. So it only doesn't work if I choose to export my file as the original R3d format. Anyone know whats wrong or how to solve this?

    Hi mikey,
LR never writes to original files, and it does not do sidecars for videos.
So in order to view your LR adjustments outside LR you need to use a format which LR can write to, like H264.

  • Color Correcting MOV file

Hello,  I have a problem with importing FCP generated XML file into Adobe Premiere Pro, so I can later transfer it to Adobe After Effects for color correcting.  So I'm thinking to color correct a high quality MOV file that I can export from Final Cut.  Does that make any sense?  I'd like to keep highest quality possible for submitting my film to film festivals, DVD etc.
Would such a method adversely affect the quality of the image?  What would be the best way to color correct a file?
Also, as a side question, does Color Finesse come built-in into After Effects or one has to purchase it separately.  For someone, who is an amateur in color correcting does it make a big difference whether one color correct in After Effects or Color Finesse?
    Many thanks

If you export a losslessly encoded movie from Final Cut Pro, then you won't lose any quality by moving your movie back and forth as a QuickTime movie. People often use the Animation codec or the PNG codec in a QuickTime container for lossless encoding of movies for such transfers. The files are big, though, so don't expect to use such files for distribution or realtime playback.
Yes, Color Finesse is included with the full version of After Effects (not with the free trial version, though). See "Color correction and adjustment".

  • Color correction slows down editing

In CS 5.5 I  adjusted the curves for color correction for the first time and then renedered the 12min video for 1hour 20min. I now see a couple of minor clip edits I want to make.  However, Premiere is acting very slow and choppy.  Is the color correcting I did slowing the edit process down?

Truthfully, what I would recommend is to turn off all CC,
edit, nail your timings... then color correct.
I always have considered and treated CC as a 'final touch'
that can't really be done full justice until the cut itself is solid.
    But...
If you have clips that really need to be CC'ed as you are editing,
you should Preview Render those clips for smooth playback
in the Timeline as you continue to edit.

  • Color correction doesnt come through well on DVD project on TV

I burned my short film onto a DVD and played it back on a SD television. The film has many color grading tweaks and I noticed that they barely come through on the TV. Definitely not representative of what i have ont he timeline. Any clue as to why this is?

Does your monitor show you the Rec.709 colorspace? And is it fully calibrated?
If not, you're not getting WYSIWYG, so there's no way you can know what the output is going to look like without burning a DVD and playing it. Then you can iterate, making changes in PPro and burning more DVDs, until you get what you want.
Very few computer monitors can show you Rec.709. To get that, you need either a production monitor, or a fully calibrated HDTV (look for one that's easy to calibrate (supports ISFccc Calibration Mode). If you use a TV, you need to make sure you're getting the proper signal to it also, but PPro using the NVIDIA graphics boards can do this without extra hardware (driving the HDMI port). If you set the driver up correctly.
But if you don't have a production monitor, or a calibrated HDTV, you're really just shooting in the dark when it comes to color correction and especially color grading. Not what you want to hear I know. But that's the current state of the art.
I'm pretty certain it doesnt show the rec.709 colorspace. My monitor isnt even widescreen. I actually had no idea about the rec.709 space until just now when you mentioned it. I am a vidnoob hence the screen name
I have a geforce 560TI card. Do you know if I can buy a cable that goes from the card to maybe an S video adapter I can plug into the TV to then color correct my project on the TV when doing things intended for TV playback? There's a DVI port on the back of my graphics card and my TV has an S video female port.

  • Color correction in FC Pro when working with multiclips

Is there someway to preserve the color correction I apply in the sequence timeline to a clip, and to preserve the motion attributes I apply (i.e. it's in the sequence, then I double click to show it in the clip viewer and make adjustments) when I then include that clip (through the bin) in a multiclip?
Basically I want to have to avoid repeating angle-specific corrections for each edit as I go along in a multiclip.
    MikeR

I tried applying corrections to each before making the multiclip and it worked this time. I think what fooled me is that the 4-in-1 window reflects the original clips. But canvas playback shows the changes in the selected angle.

  • Color Correcting Clips With Dissolves

When you're color correcting clips in a sequence with dissolves, are you color correcting the entire clip or just the part before or after the dissolve?
Do you have to remove other effects to color correct the whole clip?
Sure hope not but there seems to be a color change in playback when I hit the dissolves between clips.
Haven't rendered yet but have made a lot of changes to the color in a long and cutty sequence.

I imagine that the color changes you are seeing are because the sequence is not fully rendered. Do a test by fully rendering just a section.
And yes, you are color correcting the clip including any transitions in and out.

  • Premiere pro cc having trouble with color corrected clips

I've been working on a project for a few days and today when I opened premiere pro it gave me a warning about what software it had been running with and how it was no longer available. I'm sorry I've already forgotten the name of the software, but I know I didn't remove anything from my laptop. When I began watching the playback I noticed that color corrected clips were very jumpy and didn't play smoothly, but the ones that had not been color corrected were fine.  There were also two lines at the top of my timeline, a red one over all the jumpy clips and a yellow one over the clips that played through completely. This is my first time using premiere pro so I'm not sure what it means or how I could fix it.  It may be worth noting that my laptop isn't bad but I don't think it's necessarily the best for editing.  Is it possible that memory space or hardware within the laptop are the issue? Any advice will be appreciated, thanks.

    Just me today I guess.
The solution to this problem is simple.  Download and install the latest Adobe PPro CS3 3.2.0 patch.  50 Mb download, 20 second install time.  Everything works great now!

  • Color Correction -- render does NOT match preview

Something seems very odd about Color Correction.
I select a clip that is too dark. I adjust the slider to lighten it up while previewing. It looks perfect.
Now I APPLY and the rendered video is very different. Typically now way too light.
So I adjust render, adjust render, adjust render. This seems a crazy way to do edit!
Why doesn't the render match the preview?
PS: Sometimes only part of a clip renders with the remainder being black. What's going on?

    Hi
    Not really knowing.
    a. The tool in iMovie HD 6 crude near of no use
    b. How do You judge the result. On Your Mac monitor - Not so good just an approx.
I connect my miniDV tape Camera via FireWire
Connect the analog out to a small TV/Monitor
Set in iMovie "Playback via Camera"
This picture on the TV/Monitor is very close to my final product
    c. Color-correcting tool in iMovie'08 are better than in previous versions
BUT the link "Playback to Camera" Doesn't exist any longer (MAJOR FAULTH)
    d. This made me taking the step over to FinalCut Express with Near Pro tools to
do this. And a setting can be copied and applied to several clips that need same
    correction.

  • Problems when rendering color correction.

Hi! I discovered a possible bug in Pro CS3. Maybe in Pro 2 too? When manually adjusting "levels" in the Color Correction menu, the rendering
makes some frame dropouts. I pulled away som blue tint in some
footages and the render results in jumpy playback when people move fast by the camera. Sounds' linear and OK. When scrolling the timeline frame by frame, some frames are gone compared to the original. Ticking
the Effect Icon in the Effects Control window on and off, it changes
back to normal in the original movie. Exporting it as AVI makes same.
But when doing Color Balance instead, and lowering blue, everythings'
    normal. Strange!

Is there a recomended way to delete proxy and optimized clips once a project is completed and is ready for archive? also, can proxy and optimized clips be removed (to save space) once a project is ready for color correction and the original clips are used

No, they are NOT the same as proxy or optimized.
When you add a clip to your timeline and, say, apply an effect to it, or superimpose a title on the clip, FCP X has to make many calculations to determine what color each pixel of each frame should be. If a section of your timeline is not rendered, it has to do all these calculations every time you play those frames. A render file has the frames already "calculated", so it plays fast and smoothly.
For simple compositions and a fast computer, you may avoid rendering completely - and you may also choose to only render the portions where playback stutters.
Render files can be safely deleted. FCP X can recreate them if needed (either automatically if you have "background render" on, or on demand, when you select the "render" or "render all" commands).

  • Video looks lousy after color correction or cropping

I'm a Sony Vegas user new to FCP. Today I imported some filed from a Sony EX1 XDCAM. I transcoded to proRES422 and all looked fine in the timeline. But, I tried to colorcorrect and once I rendered the image had noticeable deterioration in sharpness and also it introduced some weird purplish noise in the darker areas. I had the same problem when I attempted a simple zoom and crop in motion for a proRES file. What's going on here?
I'm just using a Macbook with an integrated card but I was under the impression FCP is powered by the CPU. I've got 2 gigs of Ram. Speed and smooth playing video isn't a problem.
What could be going on here?

    Stab in the dark:
What are your "Playback Video" settings set to under the "RT" pop-up menu in the upper left corner of the Sequence window?
Also, what color appears above the clip in the Sequence?
What does the clip look like if your render it?
XDCAM footage should color correct well, whether it's the native data stream or converted to another codec that's good for editing.
It might not hold up to being scaled, regardless of how it's currently compressed. The picture is farily compressed as soon as it's recorded as XDCAM. Converting to something like ProRes, or Animation at best, or Photo-JPEG at best, only minimizes a compression generation loss when re-compressing later transitions, superimpositions, exporting and so forth.
