Color correction help - step-by-step

I'd appreciate some help with a snippet from a video I posted on YouTube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DFqIQPH_iU
This video was shot with three cameras. The wide shot has the most "correct colors". The video from that wide shot camera is what I want to use as my benchmark. I want to get the two "close up" cameras to match, as much as possible, the colors from the "wide shot" camera,
The two close up cameras have a little too much saturation in at least the red areas -- note the reds in the painted background. The close ups have a bit too much red, which is particularly noticeable in the painted background
So my question is what Adobe CS5 color correction tools should I use to give me the color correction I need.
For example, in what order should I use the various color correction tools? Or is there one tool I can use that will "fix" it all.
Thanks

Its going to be a bit trial and error because thats the way it is in the CC workflow.
I agree its a bit of a saturation (red) issue which you already identified so deal with that.
Try LEVELS in the red channels (and most likely red gamma - which is the mids)
Shouldnt be too difficult because its not too bad as it is.
Maybe with LEVELS drop the RGB Gamma (or Black) to bring the BG down a bit on the refernce clip ( effectively saturating it a little more)
Tip: Set up a Reference Monitor with the reference clip.
Hi
I am on another computer this morning without Premiere -- I assume a Reference Monitor is one I set up within Premiere -- not a physical external monitor.
I will try your suggestions -- BTW is an eyedropper included in Levels?   So I can do some color matching, or is that something completely different.

  • Color Correction help...

    Hello,
In still working on these issues, when I turn on the Range Checker, and scroll thru the clip, I notice an “X” on the upper-right-hand side of the clip in the Viewer - what does this mean?
Then, when I start color correcting w/the color correction 3-way wheel, a different wheel opens up each time for each clip. By the time I get to the end of my project, I had opened and closed several color correction tabs, How do I know which color correction tab corresponded to which clip, if I want to go back and do more color correction? Do I have to count clips to correspond w/wheels? There must be a better way - thanks so much.

    kristina,
what robbosaur is too diplomatic to say is you need to crack open your manuals and figure this out. if you would have looked around for the range check filter in the manual, it would have told you what the x or the check mark signifies.
also, you should probably get real cozy with the manual when it comes to applying filters and then altering them, this is real basic but confusing stuff. i highly recommend the tutorials and there are excellent 3rd party texts out there, especially from peachpit press.
it will help you to gang the canvas to open your sequence clip in the viewer, that way your sequence clip will already be open in your viewer when you stop the playhead and then when you open the "filters" tab, you'll see what you've applied to that clip.
i hope you're viewing your corrections on a monitor that best represents your delivery format.

  • Color Correcting Help!

I shot a bunch of timelapse clips (12 and 15fps) with two GoPro3's and transcoded them in the GoPro software, Cineform Studio, because PP5.5 apparently does not natively handle MP4's.  I made them universally 1080 and 29.97fps AVI's for import into Premiere 5.5 (on my mac).
While doing so, I also did minor color corrections.  However, as I start to lay them side by side in Premiere I see that I did a poor job and that they look very different.
As a result, I have two problems:
    1) I have no idea how to use Premiere's color many correcting tools.
    2) Assuming I can figure a tool out, if I must correct each clip in the sequence individually, then there is no reason why I will not again make them all look different from each other.
Is there a way to make all the clips conform to a target value, with each changing the appropriate amount from it's own, current values to match it?  For example, can I take one clip, adjust it's values (basically just white balance, brightness and contrast), and ask the rest to match it regardless of how close or far they currently are from it?  I hope I've asked this question correctly.

The Three Way Color Corrector is probably the
most intuitive CC effect for a beginner in a hurry.
Here are a couple of short tutorials:

Using the Three Way Color Corrector
    http://www.video2brain.com/en/lessons/using-the-three-way-color-corrector
You can copy > paste the Three Way Color Corrector effect
from one clip to another as a starting point for additional clips.
Also, you can use an Adjustment Layer to apply a single
color correction effect across multiple clips.

  • FCE not exporting color corrections (help please)

I see there are some really experienced Final Cut folks here. Anyone care to help with this glitch?
I've imported AVCHD footage from a Canon Vixia in 1920x1080. I edit it in Final Cut Express. I add Color Correction and Brightness / Contrast Filters. Then I export it as regular Quicktime (no compression). For some reason the brightness changes get exported but the color correction changes do not. I have tried rendering the footage before export. No change. It only exports brightness edits.
    How can I fix this?
    thank you for your help!

Hi and welcome to the forum!
What are your sequence settings? Are you seeing the color changes in your canvas before export?

  • Premiere Pro Color Correcting Help with GoPro Protune Footage

    Hey guys,
I'm working on a video I made of my daughter's birth. Most of the footage is from my DSLR and looks fine, but Im' having a helluva time getting my GoPro footage to look even remotely decent. I shot in ProTune thinking I could get more out of it in post (plus, I wanted the 24 fps option). It's a lot of indoor footage and I don't expect miracles but I'm trying to get the best I can out of it.
I start by using fast color corrector to white balance based off hte door trim. That works but it still looks really, really flat and dead. Tried using Contrast, RGB curves, etc. and I can't seem to get any sort of decent image out of it.
Any tips or ideas with where to start? I don't need it perfect, just want it as good as i can get it. Most of my indoor shots look like this for some reason :/
PS, I didn't transcode in Cineform at all. I just dumped the MP4 files right into Premiere Pro.

If you're on PrPro CC, I'd get Speedgrade also and take a run over to it for your correction work ... commonly known as grading. Yea, you can do it in PrPro, but as a noob ... never got the footage I worked "there" as far along as when working in Sg. Might help.
Next ... the scopes here are quite interesting ... first, set your lower-end of the footage to the point where you either go for good "broadcast" (blacks that you WANT black about 16 on a 0-255 scale), then lift the contrast/highs/whatever control until your whites just tip out on top. Next correct for gamma, the overall placement of the mids/upper mids, then start with your color work.
You will probably need to raise in-coming sat up a bit to start making best choices there ... but then I'm also a noob so I'm waiting for the corrections that shooter or Jim will chime in with ...

  • Is there good training/information step-through on using the 3 way color correction in CS6?

I am looking to see if there is a good source of information about how to use the 3 way color correction in premier Pro CS6?  It's very complex and daunting when I first look at it, and I would like to figure out how to use it effectively for my underwater footage.
    Thanks

    FWIW:
Anyone planning on doing CC and Grading should consider learning a bit about color science as regards CC / Grading.
There are many good books from Colorists (eg Van Hurkman or Hullfish/Fowler ) and I am sure there is plenty on th e web  about this extensive and interesting topic.  A lot of CC info is very applicable and helpfult to photography as well.
These are the fundamentals and basics that apply to all CC/ Grading applications and  will make it easy to understand the "controls" as well as the techniques  required.
Without the basics...its very dififficult to progress in these apps.

  • Color Correction steps

Is there a way to place frames from different parts of a sequence side by side in order to do color correction? Otherwise it must be done blindly, but that can't be right.
    Thanks

    Dear Tom,
probably there is not the frame viewer in FCE but I have just discovered a workaround that works very well.
Select on the time line the clip you want to apply the color correction to. Double click on it and it will appear in the Viewer (and also in the Canvas). Drag the color corrector video filter on the Viewer window. Not on the Canvas! If the color corrector window opens behind the Viewer (as is my case), drag it apart in order to see it. Now, if you adjust the color, the changes will appear on both the Viewer and the Canvas (they show the same image) but, at this point, you can drag the timeline on another clip of your choice, your reference image will change accordingly in the Canvas and the previous image (the one you are applying the color correction to) is still in the Viewer were you can see all the adjustments while you make them and compare the results with your reference image in the Canvas. No need to switch back and forth!

  • Please correct my steps to modify and test CRM 5.0

    Hello SDN!
I don't have clear understand how to make modifying CRM 5.0. Extension guide give no clear understanding too. I'm new to JDI...
My doings to prepare for modifiyng was be done fully according with Ext Guide. In Landscape Directory I setup only Development system.
My objective: change Web App root and test my new application.
    My doings:
    1) import development configuration into NWDS
    2) create DC in CUSTCRMPRJ
    3) create necessary files in META-INF
      application-j2ee-engine.xml
      data-source-aliases.xml
      log-configuration.xml
      monitor-configuration.xml
      monitor-configuration.dtd
these files was created by copy it's contents from SAP files
      application.xml
this file also was copied from SAP file but context root was changed to "b2b_sng"
    4) check-in activity (activity1)
    5) in CBS Web UI (NWDS CBS view was empty for a strange reason) i perform activating my activity
    6) after that I get info that b2b_sng already exists and I have to change my webroot. I've done it by creating new activity (activity2)
    7) during check-in this new activity NWDS hangs up and freeze for a minute and then released. After that CBS View show all my acitivities.
    8) activate activity2
    9) now in Transport view I have my two activities waiting for release. I can't release activity2 without releasing activity1 but I don't know what will be with current b2b_sng application after release activity1
So main question is: I know that some steps are missing so please give me detail corrects my steps if necessary. Also I don't know how to check successfully of my steps.
Subquestion is: is it true that releasing activity1 will make current b2b_sng application broken?
    Help will be highly appreciated.
    Sorry for my english
    Regards, Lev

    Navadeep,
Short answer: I don't have such a document, nor do I know where to find one.
Since most of the people who regularly monitor and post to this forum don't work with the E-Business suite (at least not iPayment) - I don't feel you'll get a good response here. I hope someone can prove me wrong. The best place to find this information is the E-Business Suite forums or perhaps Metalink.
Furthermore, I don't believe that Oracle supports modifying the supplied iPayment servlets. So, I think Metalink is the right place for you to start.

My old iPod Nano says to use iTunes to restore and I've followed all suggested help steps, but I can't get it into disk mode nor can I get it to show in my computer or in iTunes.  I have the latest version of iTunes.  Windows has all the most recent updates too.  I can reset the iPod, but the message to Use iTunes to restore comes back and I am stuck.

Already tried another USB port, still nothing.
I don't have another PC to check, I only have one which is the one not working with my iPod.
It appears under my Computer, just not under iTunes. Plus, the iPod classic troubleshooting assistant doesn't work because I can't restore since it can't come up onto my iTunes! Even my iPod says "Use iTunes to Restore" once in a while, but I plug it in & I'm not able to restore it since it won't come up under iTunes.

  • Connecting Color Correction Monitor To My G5 (Help Please)

Hello everyone. I'm getting ready to begin color correction on a DV feature I've just finished audio post on. I have a Macintosh dual 2Gig G5. It's an early G5 that has PC133 slots, however, and is NOT HD compatible or ready. I cannot use an HD video card (AJA, etc) or an HD monitor for cc - and simply cannot afford an AJA IO - so I'm going to work with SD. In the research I've done it looks like the JVC DT V1710CGU - a 17" monitor that is said to have decent critical color correction capabilities is what I might purchase (here's a link to one)
    http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=htt...s%3Den%26sa%3DN
How would I be able to get my video out to the monitor using my G5? The reason I ask this is because, simple as I thought it was, when I went to purchase the actual monitor and the tech tried to use it to see video from his laptop . . . it didn't work.
He plugged from the computer to the JVC monitor using a DVI to VGA adapter connected to a VGA to RGB cable (the DVI end of the adapter being connected to the computer) and connected that RGB end of the cable into the JVC.
He tried a lot of different monitor formats in his laptop to try to conform the computer's signal for the JVC, but nothing seemed to work. I myself have a Sony DVMC-DA2 analogue to digital media converter that I used to get video from the G5 to view on an external television set. The media converter is connected to the G5 via fire wire, and then connect to the tv using RCA cables, but the tech said that you DON'T want to connect the JVC monitor using RCA cables (composite . . . right?). He said use RGB cables (component).
Does anyone know, again, how to be able to get the JVC DT V1710CGU to output video from my G5 (Final Cut Pro specifically)?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Javier Calderon

Thank you much for the prompt reply, David. I really appreciate it.
I just realized right now - after reading your post and investigating, that is - that my Sony DVMC-DA2 has S-Video in and out. This seems that it would be sufficient then, no? So . . . what's the proper connection then? Let me know please if this is it:
Connect my Sony media converter to the G5 via fire wire. Go out of the media converter via S-Video and IN to the JVC color correction monitor . . . via . . . what? Does the JVC monitor have S-Video in?
Thanks again for your help, by the way. You've already clear me up a bit.
    Javier

I'm trying to delete multiple pix in iPhoto that i stupidly made duplicates of without knowing, I've tried going into the applications folder and using image capture but i think I've missed a step , can anyone send the correct info / steps pls thanks

again image capture is not involved with deleting photos from iPhoto in any way ever
the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager is very good for finding duplicates as is Duplicate Annihilator
And I have no idea who told you this - or what it means - but re-read both of my opening statements
I was told I could delete multpiles thru image capture by transferring my iPhoto library etc

  • New to color correction - need help on too bright shot

Need help to fix this shot!  I've been messing around with color corrector 3 way and nothing seems to help.   I'm new to color correction and would greatly appreciate any advice.
    Thanks,
    Jenny

When you see white pixels in an overexposed shot, it means that there's often no pixel data to work with.
While the best option is a reshoot (this time with proper monitoring), you may want to try the "Captain's Blowout Fixer" filter available here: http://pistolerapost.com/pluginz/index.html
It let's you looks to see which color channel has the most remaining pixel data (if any) and work with it to overcome production screw-ups like this.  Make sure you watch the tutorial on how to properly use the filter.

  • Need help: How to color correct professionally (with examples)

Post to video forum (before and after): Hi, I really need some help  I want to color correct this video. I would love if someone had tips, either on:
-How you would correct the original
-What it looks like I'm doing wrong in my attempts (last 2 pictures)
    Thanks!

I'd crunch it up a little more with a curves adjustment. These children don't look healthy and stronger contrast will help. Also push the reds toward a slightly more orange tone. They look too purple. There's also still an overall purple tinge which needs to be eliminated. See the included 3 minute quick shot of mine. Not perfect and requires more tweaking (too much yellow now, see the lips), but I think it better represents the feeling one would want to convey.
