Color Correction problems on external monitor

Ok.
So, I am using some video filters to enhance the look of my video project. I am very happy with the way everything looks on my computer monitor.
However, when I play the video through my camcorder to my monitor, the color is WAY off and everything is flickering.
I tried playing the video out through external monitor with the filters turned OFF in FCP and everything looks fine.
I have played the same video out through monitor with one of the filters turned OFF while the others are still ON and the image looks fine. Here is the list of filters in order from top to bottom:
RGB Balance
HSV Adjust
Vignette
It seems that the combination of these filters is causing a playback problem on my external monitor. This is an issue b/c I need to see how the color filters will look on my end project as it is played on a TV.
One other interesting wrinkle....the applied filters if left UN-RENDERED and in the green PREVIEW render state, will play through to the monitor fine.
I even tried to print the video to tape in an effort to then re-capture the video that would by my assumption be "off color" but this is what happened....
The video while being printed to tape looked awful on my camcorder monitor AND awful on my computer monitor as it was printing to tape. So, I then rewound the tape and attempted to RE-CAPTURE the video which I thought would now have the wrong colors. But, once the video was re-captured and I played it....it looked FINE on my computer monitor, but AWFUL on my camcorder monitor.
This was the same tape that I saw being recorded in the AWFUL color state yet, it was now playing back fine on my computer monitor.
What is going on???
One last test on my own tonight. I am going to burn a DVD with this video. I assume that the video on the DVD when played back through my TV will look AWFUL however, If I preview the video on my computer monitor through iDVD it will look fine.
Does anyone have any idea what may be going on here?
Thanks,
Pete

David,
I did a test. I burned a DVD of my video. And..the colors were off, the image was flickering...generally terrible.
But, then I paused the DVD and.....color was perfect!
Just as I wanted.
So, there is something going on with the interlaced video fields on TV monitors maybe???
I don't know.
But, the problem is definitely with the NTSC monitor side of things...but a problem generating from the use of thes filters in FCP.
Still not solved.

  • Color correction problems with multiple monitors

I just upgraded my Win 7 from RC to RTM.  I then updated my color correction using Gretag Macbeth i1 for both adapters. My system has 2 video cards and 3 monitors.  Monitor 1 runs off adapter 1, monitors 2 & 3 run off adapter 2.  Both video cards and all 3 monitors are of the same model.  I set adapter/monitor 1 to the ICC profile 1, and adapter 2/monitor 2&3 to ICC profile 2 from Gretag.  Not running LR, everything looks as expected.
When I run LR on the primary monitor green leaves turn orange, if I had to guess I would say I'm loosing the green information.  If I move LR to display 2 or 3 the colors are as they should be.
I ran into this once before and it was something simple to fix this, but I can't seem to find it now.   BTW, this worked just fine before the upgrade from RC to RTM.

At first I thought a reboot cured the problem, but apparently not.

  • Color Correcting With a Broadcast Monitor?

I have read the threads and recognize that it is suggested to color correct on an external monitor. I saw a few suggestion that you could use a standard TV with a blue filter to replace the blue only switch. Is there an advantage to color correcting on my LCD TV rather than my powerbook?
    Thanks

I'm sorry, I literally wrote the word "NO" and was called away, for some reason feeling compelled to hit "send".
In the sense of a real signal check there is little difference difference between your LCD as a video monitor and seeing it on a computer monitor.
    But:
    - it' frees up screen space.
    - it will probably be more adjustable and capable of getting closer to video gamma and color than the computer screen.
So I guess the answer should have been "Yes, but..."
    The buts are:
    - it still won't be close enough to avideo gamma and color to be useful as a reference monitor,
    - the timing won;'t allow you to see motion artifacts and interlace as they really are.
To answer the last part: yes, it should be different going through the camera and receiving a video signal as opposed to the DVI.
But really not for color correction.

  • Photoshop color problem on external monitor

I'm using MacBook w/ OS X Snow Leopard, NEC LCD2490 monitor attached, both displays calibrated.  I found at some point that colors in Photoshop were WAY off on the NEC.  Images looked "correct" in Lightroom on the NEC, but when opened in PS I had massive color shift and desaturation, e.g. purple flowers became dull gray-blue.  I could drag the same image to the laptop and it appeared "correct" in both LR and PS.  I checked color settings, etc. and couldn't find a problem, but presumably that would render the image incorrectly on both monitors.  Most significantly, the image appears "correct" even on the NEC monitor when the laptop display is off (clam shell mode).  Summary:  Dual monitors:  LR/PS correct on laptop display, LR correct on NEC but PS is WAY off.  Using external monitor only:  image displays correctly in both LR/PS.  I suspect this is a hardware/firmware/OS problem vs. PS.  Anybody else have this problem?

Snow Leopard has some known problems with color managing external monitors.  We've been looking into it and notified Apple (as have a few other color management experts).

  • Color correction problem

    Hi.
I usually work on color correction using Color, but sometimes i use CC in FCP.
I have a clip that need to low down black levels, so i tried CC and CC 3 way, but when i click with eyedrop the blackest part of the clip, instead of blancing blacks, it turns all image to blue. What's happened?
can i have some suggest about it?
    thanx

To color balance, find anything in the shot that should be white. Using the Color Corrector 3-Way filter, click on the eyedropper for the highlights (the color wheel on the right) then click the white object in the shot on the Canvas window. If you're viewing your edit on a properly calibrated external TV monitor, it should look white there. Do NOT go by what you see in the Canvas as it isn't accurate. You can also use FCP's scopes for evaluation.
If it still looks a little off on the TV monitor and/or on the scopes, use the mouse to drag the dot in the highlights color wheel toward the hue it needs to be (away from the hue that is is currently).
You can also adjust the mid-tones and black balance hue controls as needed, but be careful when using the black levels and hue adjustments; a small adjustment can go a long, long way.

  • Problem with external monitor

    Hello all,
did you ever use an external monitor with the mac book pro? Once disconnected the external monitor, the Mac freezes and becomes unresponsive. Do you know why?
    thank you very much
    Fulvio

I have the same problem with my external Acer monitor, starting today. Suddenly, when connected to my MacBook, the Acer monitor says "Input Not Supported". If the Acer monitor is not connected, it says, correctly, "signal not detected".
When the external monitor is connected, my MacBook can see it, has a display preference for it, lets me change resolution, etc, but the Acer monitor simply says "Input Not Supported". This just started today, and I did the system upgrade yesterday. Is there a connection?
I've tried the usual fiddling with connections, rebooting, everything.

  • Problems with External Monitor In XP

Ok, I've got a huge problem with XP on Bootcamp.
I've recently got a Samsung TV which I can use as an external monitor. This works absolutely fine when I'm using OSX, recognizes the TV and can use it as a second screen.
When I try to use the same monitor in Windows under Bootcamp, it works as an extension of my desktop, but not able to mirror my desktop. I want to do this so I can play my games on a large screen instead of a small one.
I've trawled the forums on this kind of problem and found a few answers. However, many of them talk about the ATI graphics drivers. I've downloaded the appropriate drivers and the control center from the website, but to no avail.
People have also said about going into display properties: settings: advanced and selecting the ATI tab. I have no ATI tab.
Also with the Catalyst Control Center, when I try to run it, it tells me that I dont have permission to change the settings and to contact my administrator, even though I am the administrator.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can solve this?
By the way. I'm connecting the external monitor via the DVI on my Macbook Pro to the HDMI connection on the TV.
    Many thanks
    Chris

My logic tells me, if you are using a new MBP the way it's designed is that even if you are plugged in at times it will go in battery mode for a few minutes in order to prevent battery damage, than it will recharge. This happens in the background without notice. However, within this couple of minutes you might notice your display screen to sleep because it is setup to sleep in 1 minute or less in the preference under battery mode. So within that window you might have your screen go blank since the entire process takes a lot more than a minute. I hope this helps.

  • Inkscape/X11 Problems with external Monitor

    Hello,
I´m using Inkscape to create vector art on my MacBook Pro.
Since my update to Mavericks I´m having problems with X11. I have the version 2.7.5 of XQuartz installed currently.
After some troubles, Inkscape opens up just fine.
But I cannot drag Inkscape over to my external monitor, which is based to the right of my notebook.
    Inkscape simply disappears.
I´m quite the DAU ;-) with Computers and Software, so it would be nice, if you can help me.
    Thanks a lot in advance!

How about trying a native Mac app like iDraw http://www.indeeo.com/idraw/

  • Shutdown problems with external monitor

    Hello.
I'm running Mavericks on my 2012 Macbook Air, running in clamshell mode with an Asus display connected from the Air's Thunderbolt port to the displays DVI port.
My Macbook will not shutdown, unless I disconnect the external monitor.  This did not happen with previous OS versions.

What adapter are you using to connect the MacBook miniDVI to the VGA input on the monitor? Is it the Apple adapter made specifically for the MacBook or possibly an older version? Double check that you have the correct adapter, just to rule that out as the potential culprit.
Make sure you are using the recommended resolution and refresh rates for your monitor, from: http://www.viewsonic.com/pdf/userguides/va1903wb-2ugeng.pdf
    Resolution Recommended and supported
    1440 x 900 @ 60, 75 Hz (60 recommended)
    1280 x 1024 @ 60, 75 Hz
    1024 x 768 @ 60, 70, 72, 75 Hz
    800 x 600 @ 56, 60, 72, 75 Hz
    640 x 480 @ 60, 75 Hz
    720 x 400 @ 70 Hz
other settings may show up in the Displays, System Preference, even though the monitor can't handle it. Try the different refresh rates to see if that makes any difference. When you have the Mac set up, then use the on-screen controls to auto adjust the monitor, I think this is the Auto Image or Auto set function.
I use a Samsung 204B, 20" at 1600x1200, and sometimes I get some brief flickering when first waking from sleep, but it works fine other than that.

  • X240 - Thinkpad Ultra dock Problem with external monitors

I have tried to connect my two external monitors to the dock (the one connected to the vga port) but it was only able to detect one of them (though at a low resolution) and not the other. i have tried using a replicator to connect the screen to the dvi and the usb  ports but nothing seemed to work
Did anyone face the same problem and how were they able to resolve it - any recommendation for a port replicator brand / usb to vga display adapter to use that would work?
    Thanks

Seems that there is no solution now, because DP MST should be implemented in Linux: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=72795

  • Leopard 10.5.2 problems with external monitor

Since I installed 10.5.2 on my macbook pro I cannot have a external monitor Dell 3007 WFP connected to my laptop when starting the computer. The screen will only show up on my laptop but only my background picture but nothing else so I have to perform each time a forced exit. However if I start my computer with my external computer unplugged the laptop works fine and if I then connect my Dell monitor everything works fine. However the closed lid mechanism is not working either anymore. My computer goes to sleep if you press an external keyboard the Dell screen comes on for few seconds but then goes to sleep again. I never had this problem with leopard 10.5.1. Does anyone known an answer to this problem.

I have exactly the same problem. After 4 hours on the phone over 2 calls to Apple Care, they finally let me know that this is an issue with 10.5.2. They said they are working on a fix that would come out with a future update, and offered the workaround of reinstalling Leopard without 10.5.2 update.
They sent me this link about reinstalling without losing files and settings:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8177.html
It's very frustrating, and I hope they find a fix for it soon!

  • Problem with external monitor when using Windows XP on MBP

    Hi All,
I just got a 15.4" MBP, and put Windows XP Home on it using BootCamp. Anyway, the monitor sits above the MBP's screen, as shown below (set up this way through display props, not sure if it matters):
    [ ] External Monitor
    [ ] MBP Screen
Anyway, some program windows won't drag to the external monitor (Dell 2007FP connected via DVI). An example is AIM. Any idea what it could be? The window shows for about 1/2" on the top monitor, and then it sticks, even though the cursor will continue to move upwards.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Hello Gray:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
It appears from this knowledge base article, that you need a USB keyboard to use Bootcamp:

  • Problem installing external monitor

    CT,
Thanks for your reply.  (I can't find the way to reply to your message within the original discussion).  I read the manual you referred me to.  I have to say, I have done precisely what the manual is directling.  When I close the Macbook, I don't get the blue screen and eventual desktop, but rather a black one..and a quick message that says "no signal".  My keyboard is not bluetooth, but wired.

Take a look at this outside thread:

  • Color correction problem between original sequence and multicam sequence... Please help

I used three camcorders to record a youth dance recital.  I created an orginal sequence for the three camcorders and another sequence using the multicam feature to edit the dances.  After I finished editing, I went back to the original sequence to make some color correction and brightness adjustments using the Fast Color Correction controls.  After that, I sent everything to Encore to create a DVD.  When I watched the DVD, I noticed some of my color correction settings were still off, so I went back to the orginal sequence to make some changes.  Unfortunately, the multicam sequence would not read the new settings.  After a few unsuccessful attempts to get the clip from the multicam sequence to read the clip from the original sequence, I decided to start over by clearing the Fast Color Correction controls from the clip.  The multicam sequence then adjusted back matching the original sequence.  However, when I started a new Fast Color Correction control in the original sequence, the multicam sequence would not take the new settings.  How to I get the mulitcam sequence to read the orginal sequence?

    Thank Jim for replying:
I am stumped on this one.  I did a few radical tweeks and it did not take.  For example, I made one clip in the original sequence go completely dark.  However, the clip in the mulicam sequence did not change.
I even deleted the render files and the work area render files and started over with making changes.  Nothing.  Any change I make on the original sequence will no longer adjust in the multicam sequence.
Any last words of advice before I delete the entire multicam sequence and start over?  Thanks.
