Color correction slows down editing

In CS 5.5 I  adjusted the curves for color correction for the first time and then renedered the 12min video for 1hour 20min. I now see a couple of minor clip edits I want to make.  However, Premiere is acting very slow and choppy.  Is the color correcting I did slowing the edit process down?

Truthfully, what I would recommend is to turn off all CC,
edit, nail your timings... then color correct.
I always have considered and treated CC as a 'final touch'
that can't really be done full justice until the cut itself is solid.
But...
If you have clips that really need to be CC'ed as you are editing,
you should Preview Render those clips for smooth playback
in the Timeline as you continue to edit.

  • Color Correcting an Already-Edited Multiclip

So, I'm not that bright. I edited a 2 hour multiclip only to realize at the end that I wanted to do some color correcting on one of the angles to match the other two. Is there a way for me to color correct an entire angle all at once without having to re-edit the multiclip or copy and paste the filter onto each clip in the multiclip? Thanks.

Oh yeah ! paste attributes etc etc, it's brilliant, digital editing isn't it!
I was not quite certain you wanted the same cc for the whole 2 hour clip!
Haven't you got a lot of coninuity light problems ?
Pity I was hoping to find out if the reconnection worked. It should do if you had time code and the other meta data is the same, but maybe the cc instructions would interfere!
    Best wishes

  • Audio plugins slows down editing

I'm wondering if I'm using the wrong approach.
The problem is, FCPX is becomes slow when I add audio plugins on the time line. Is there a better way to do things?
What I usually do is have 2 microphones for my videos. I add a bit of compression and reverb on both audio channels, before I start cutting the footage. So the result is all editing becomes slow, due to the audio plugins I added.
I usually create synchronized clips or multicam clips for most of my footage.
The ideal situation would be to be able to add the audio plugins as the last step, but that becomes awkward when you have many edits on the timeline.

Not at my FCPX machine today but couldn't you either export the finished project and apply your audio filters there or send the stems out for audio post? There's got to be a way to do this. Maybe make a compound clip (I don't even know what that is) and apply your filters and FX to the tracks there?

  • Using Text Tool / Titles Slows Down Editing Significantly

When I add in text using the text tool on PrEl 9, the video playback becomes very choppy.  This is whether the text has animation (movement of any kind) to it or even if it just stands still. Wondering if there's something I'm doing wrong.  Otherwise, I can simultaneously play two purely video tracks with no problem, it seems to be only a text tool thing...any ideas anyone?
My System: HP, Windows 7, AMD 6-core 2.8ghz processor, 6g RAM
    Thanks - JD

In addition to Steve's suggestions, it sounds like adding text may now require rendering - make sure there is either no line or a green horizontal line above the highest video track in the Timeline.   If there is, press ENTER or pick Timeline > Render Work Area from the menu.  If the red line won't go away, your work area may not include the whole timeline.
If that doesn't take care of it, is the playback only poor in the parts of the timeline where there is text or is it the whole timeline?

  • Color correction novice back with a problem/question.

    Hi,
I have been working on color correction for an edit of a live 2 camera shoot concert. Edits are almost all final. I dug into correcting color between the 2 cameras & after some practice got good results.
Tho, I noticed that corrections looked slightly different after rendering them, and again slightly different after exporting to full uncompressed quicktime video.
Saturation levels shifted (less), & some shots showed slightly different color balance. This is a unique shoot because the stage was fully lit in red light & red can be one of the most difficult colors in video (in my experience).
So I eventually started that vicious cycle of correcting not by eye but by anticipating what was needed to get a desired result after rendering & exporting... each time it was lengthy renders & exports before seeing the results.
So I had several versions of the project saved w/ different renderings, etc. All of this is stored on a 250 gig 2nd internal drive which I bought & installed just for editing. All files & edit lists etc were kept there.
So I'm trying to look at different versions after having to put the project aside for a couple of weeks, and every version I open shows me a list of render files that it says it can't find. I've just been choosing to re-render.
(I'm wondering if a routine session of running disk warrior on my drives could have contributed to this?? Thats the only thing I can think of, other than the OSX upgrade to 10.4.4, which also included a quicktime upgrade.)
I'm new at this so I'm trying to figure out if this disappearance of render files is normal? In one version I chose 'search computer for render files' or something to that effect & I watched it go thru my drives one after another & when it got to the 2nd internal drive (where all the render files should be), it spent about 1/10th the time that it spent searching other drives. It really jumped in & out of that drive really quickly.
Its not all the render files that are missing, I looked in the render folder & some have older dates, while a section of them are from tonite when I re-rendered. Then more with the older date.
    Anybody have any advice?
    Thanks for your help

  • Color correction workflow

I like to color correct my clips before I start working on the timeline.  Is there a way to color correct and save the color corrected clip so I don't have to redo color once I lay it on the timeline again?  Or this is not the right way of doing things?

Generally you don't color correct before you edit, correction being based not on one clip but on the clips around it. If you want to you can open a clip into the timeline from the browser.  Any color correction applied there will be applied to each use of the clip.

  • Do I color correct angles before making multiclip?

    Hi guys,
I have two individual angles I'm going to sync and make a multiclip out of. One of my clips is horribly bright and requires some serious fixing in Color.
Do I color correct or add filters to the individual angles BEFORE making the two angles into one multiclip? Or is there some way to color correct the entire angle after making it into a multiclip?
--also, any reason why my canvas when changing angles in a multiclip would show it in 4:3 while the actual video is 16:9 in both the viewer and timeline?
    Thanks

You could color correct before if you like, if your angle is rock solid and the changes will be consistent throughout. I don't do it that way but have been tempted.
If you do it after finishing the multiclip edit then you will need to copy one color corrected clip and then paste attributes to the other appropriate clips.
As a rule I color correct when my edit is finished.

  • Do all editing before any color correction?

I have just gotten final cut pro x.
I have some experience (very limited a couple of years back, with a Sony Home Movie Studio Platinum).
I am shooting my own music video.
Really enjoying using FCPX atm.  Niggles aside (the lack of a manual save feature)
    Just curious about workflow/resources.
Should I do all my editing, prior to color correction from a resources standpoint.
Does it make it slower, rendering say a zoom in the transform function with color correction applied, than without?
Eg, I have a clip, I put a keyframe and start and end of the clip. Then I scale the clip to 105% on the end of clip keyframe
    to simulate a zoom in.
Should I be doing all that kind of editing, then applying any color correction or video type effects?
    cheers
    Wiz

Should I do all my editing, prior to color correction from a resources standpoint.
That's the SOP for working with professional video. You organize your media, you edit your media, you mix your audio, you add your transitions and titles, add effects and motion, color correct your video.

  • Aperture slows down on edited files

Hi folks, i run Aperture 2.1.2 on a 13" MacBook 2,4 GHz with 4 GB of RAM.
I noticed a loss of performance on both referenced and managed files as they get edited, especially when added of sharpen and enhance adjustments: the more adjustments they get the more Aperture slows down, especially annoying is scrolling through a 100% zoomed photo, with the movement delayed by 2/3 seconds...
There's actually a difference between referenced and managed files, as managed ones respond a bit better, but still not as an original one.
P.S. all masters are on the internal drive.
    Thanks for any suggestion...

cwog is correct about the overhead for displaying edited master images, but I disagree with his suggestion to export to view images. I suggest you use "Quick Preview" to display photos with minimal delay (use "P" as shortcut to turn on and off). You need to make sure you generate a preview automatically and set the size and quality under "Preferences --> Preview." Previews do not require the calculations for display as does the edited master image. Display time is much quicker.

  • Downloading Aperture has slowed down photo editing on my iMac.  Should I delete iPhoto?

Downloading Aperture has slowed down photo editing on my iMac.  Should I delete iPhoto?

So it was only the initial preprocessing after an import of a complete library. If your system drive is nearly full, you should expect performance problems. Try to free at least 20% of your drive.
I would try to keep your iPhoto Application - it is only 1.1 GB and you may need it later; but you can safely delete the iPhoto Library once you are sure, you imported it successfully. iPhoto can do some things Aperture cannot - e.g. greeting cards, calendars. And it is always nice to have a second application for testing purposes, if something should go wrong.
But make a backup copy of the iPhoto Library, just in case. Sometimes you will notice years later that a single image not imported correctly, and then you will be glad you still have a backup of the original iPhoto library.

I have a revision a imac g5 with the same problem with only macbreak podcast. I know leo laporte said that the podcast was done in 1080p and my computer with its built in 64 megabyte graphics card might have trouble with this podcast but your machine must have a better graphics card than mine. 1080p requires at least 128 megabytes of graphics memory built in. My machine played this podcast on quicktime fine until they came out with the update to quicktime last week or two ago. I was going to upgrade my memory until I came accross your story and your machines doing the same thing with much better specs. I think it might be the quicktime update that is causing a problem. Maybe Leo will talk about this problem since he is doing a mac show about macs.

  • Color correction shuts me down

Everytime I try to use any color correction my system shuts down. What should I do to fix this problem?

It depends on what you mean by "shuts down".
If it literally turns itself off, it could be that you are plugged into a UPS that is not big enough to handle the power supply in your PC.
I had that problem after I bought a new PC. Went out and bought a new UPS, probalem solved.
    Or, you could be overheating.
Or, you might have some problems that wiping out your cache would help.

  • Color correcting multi edit clips

I need some help. I would like to do the color correcting on 3 clips that will be used in a multi edit. The way I have been color correcting the footage is to just drag the whole clip on the timeline and do the color correcting before I do any editing and cutting of the clip. Is there a way I can do the same thing with multi cam clips? Once they are on the timeline, the corrections are made on the timeline, but the original clips don't change?
    Bruce Cleveland

I think Jerry is suggesting you do the following:
-Duplicate your clip in the browser (option-d)
-Dbl-click the new clip (will load it in viewer)
-Apply Color Correction (this will affect the clip as it resides in your browser, leaving the original master clip untouched)
-lather/rinse/repeat for all clips to be used in multiclip
-create your multi-clip and edit away
Can I also do this with clips on the timeline
There are procedures for this within a multiclip environment, but I'm not remembering them well enough and no longer have access to a multiclip system for review and assistance. Check your manual..I remember this part frankly being a little convoluted, so a search of this forum or the other previously posted links should help.
