Color correction tool

I am having difficulty using the color correction tool, basically, I would like to eliminate a single color from a frame (be desaturating it), or isolate a specific part of a frame to color correct. Any ideas? Thanks!

  • Promising color correction tool from Technicolor

I'm not associated with Technicolor, but thought this would be interesting to the group:
There is a new plug-in for CS6 that looks very cool.  It seems like it occupies the space that the Magic Bullet Looks goes after, but it has a very slick way of making a virtual dynamic link with the Premiere timeline.
    https://www.technicolorcinestyle.com
I have done some limited testing with the demo (which does not allow for the non-destructive linking) and it is quite promising.  You can apply some good presets, and then do your tweaking...having curves adjustments, real-time scopes and a keyer are pretty pro features.  It doesn't go as far as Colorista - no secondaries for example - but the workflow looks super smooth.
Check out the video on the page for a quick demo.  Could fill a good place in the color workflow.

I bought the full product and have access to the roundtrip workflow...and I've messed around with it for a few days.
My first impressions are that it is a really great tool.  It is fast, powerful, and the roundtripping works beautifully.  I especially love having access to 9 looks that you build in the app right in Pr that you can click on and off.  And even though I am getting a red bar, I can play back in real-time at full res...even on H.264 footage.  Never been able to do that with Colorista.
The few drawbacks are that you miss some of the useful color correction tools like Secondaries - no ability to create vignettes or power windows - and there is no output to a production monitor to do a precise grade until you switch back to Premiere.  There are built in scopes, so at least that can be a guide.
I think it fits a good niche in certain workflows...maybe usful when you don't need to do a time consuming, precise grade with either Colorista, Resolve or SpeedGrade...and still gets you a long way to a beautiful image.

  • Color corrected video washed out by font / graphics

    Hi everyone-
I'm running FCP 4.1.1 on a Mac dual G4. I have some DV clips on the timeline which I adjusted using the brightness / contrast function of the Color Correction tool. When I lay font or graphics over it, the clips get all washed out, and look more like the original clips. After rendering, the Viewer tells me that the video clips are still brightness / contrast adjusted, even though they're not. When I remove the font / graphics, they look as I intended (adjusted).
I used these same graphics on other video clips and they worked fine. It seems to be an issue with the adjusted clips.
    Can anyone help? Thanks.
    Mac dual G4   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

what color is the render bar above these problem clips?
it may be that with these graphic overlays applied then you are seeing only a proxy or preview of the final effect and not a full render
if so, check your Sequence > Render settings and make sure to check the Preview and/or Proxy options
    cheers

  • Underwater Color Correction--D800 Video

I just came back from a dive trip to Cozumel and tried my new D800's video capabilities.
I'm happy to report that, with color correction in FCP, the D800 does a great job without a red filter or lights.
I didn't have much chance to experiment with this--too many other new things to try--but here's a quick preview.
This is an uncorrected frame shooting without lights, auto white balance and programed exposure and shutter speed in about 40 feet of water (sunny day topside):
I did a quick and dirty color correction using the three way color correction tool in FCP.  Not surprisingly, the corrections added red:
The final looks great to me:
I also tested use of the Magic Filter for a few dives.  I did not get better resuls, and worse, I had to do a lot of color correction on my stills to make them usable.
This may be of limited interest to those who don't dive, but I was really happy to see that I could dive and do both stills and video without a filter and still restore with FCP the reds, oranges and yellows lost below 15 or so feet.

For shallow water, auto level seems to work pretty well.
I used auto levels in Photoshop Elements 11 for most of these shots.
    https://www.facebook.com/friends/requests/?ref=tn&fcref=ffb#!/roy.yumori/photos_albums
The manta ray is at 50 ft and is from a freeze frame from a video.  There is almost no red.  So it is too blue.  I used auto levels in Premiere Pro CC and it was better than the original, but not great.

  • Color Correction plugin for Premiere Pro CS3....

    Hi,
I'm looking for a plugin for color correction in Premier Pro CS3.
I checked out the Color Correction tools that ship with Premiere (which are nice) and I checked out Synthetic Aperture's Color Finesse 2 (which is great as well).
Are there any other recommendations ? ;)
Thanx for your help in advance !
    Mike

I've not used it, but Magic Bullet Colorista is one option.

  • Color correction questions

I have a few questions about the color correction tools in Premiere CS4.
    1. Suppose that the colors in my shot are basically correct, but the blacks have a tint to them.  Which is the best color correction filter to use to correct for this?
    2. Do any of the color correction filters desaturate secondary colors?  I have a shot that would probably look fine if I could just desaturate the yellows.
I know that this can be done in Photoshop.
    3. Is there a good technique in Premiere for matching colors between two scenes or cameras?  I know Avid's color correction has a specific setting for this.
    Thanks in adance!
    J. D.

    1) tint in black probably means white balance was off a bit ( not matched to your light source).
Can try to correct WB overall and get rid of black tint ( use eye dropper and choose the black area that's supposed to be black and make it black...see what happens to the rest of your image colors )
    2) maybe broadcast colors...which has some tendency to imitate "selective color" in photoshop, as you adjust stuff ...
    3) no ...except maybe ( again ) broadcast colors ...  but probably you have to do by eye or LUT...but basically no
I'm kinda new at this so dont take my word as gospel...someone else may have cool ideas ( they usually do )

  • Color correcting?

    1. Does CS5.5 have color correcting built in?
    2. If so, is it anything like the way it is done in Final Cut Pro 6-7?
    Thanks.

I mean the built in color correcting tools in FCP not the separate program Color
    So YES is the answer.
Get the Trial Vers running and you will be answering a lot of your own questions.

  • Color Correcting Suggestions

I have PP CS3 and am trying to get a certain color enhancement look.  I've been adjusting various levels in the color correction tools, but still can't seem to get the look I want.
For example.. here's a video of what i'm trying to Color duplicate.
    http://vimeo.com/5699982
Can this be done in Premiere or After Effects?  And if so, can you steer me in the right direction to adjust my video accordingly.  Thanks
    Danny

    Danny,
A couple of things that I noticed were:
1.) on the wide shot of the spokesman and the display, the display area was either well lit, with light off of the background, or perhaps tweaked in post to darken just the background area.
2.) there was a fair amount of both yellow and red added in the CU's, as evidenced by the spokesman's skin tone.
You might also want to look into kicking the Saturation up a bit, after you do the CC work.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Color Correction preset plug-in

Yes, I too have entered the PLUG-IN making arena. Well...kinda. This is a 3-way Color Correction preset that I made and turned into a plugin.
I had a look for my recreations that I really loved...a preset in Magic Bullet. But the render time was going to be NUTS...so I saw how close I could come using the 3-Way Color Correction tool. Well, I nailed it. I got it to look EXACTLY the same. At first it was completely RT...no rendering whatsoever. But I have to limit the Luma so that my whites stayed white while all the other colors were affected, so now it is a light green render. Still...what would have taken me 10 minutes to render now takes me under 1 min...that that is a HUGE bonus.
Here it is for you to enjoy:
[link removed at author's request - moderator]
It is called SR Color Reversal (SR=Shane Ross). Color Reversal film stock is very colorful, but has a low "latitude"...difference between darks and brights, so the image "pops."
Unzip it and install it into your PLUGINS folder in the following path:
HARD DRIVE>LIBRARY>APPLICATION SUPPORT>FINAL CUT PRO SYSTEM SUPPORT>PLUGINS. It will appear in the Color Correction folder in the Effects tab. And it is completely modifyable...as it is a 3-way CC preset. The colors and saturation should be set, but depending on how your footage is lit, you need only adjust the LOWs and MIDs slider to brighten the image. But not too much. How I retain the rich color is by crushing the blacks.
Play with it and let me know how it works. Built with FCP 5.0.4.
Many thanks to Graeme Nattress for assistance in writing this. I did it while wearing my Nattress Logo shirt, as to get the 'Nattress Mojo' while coding.
    Shane

Yeah. When I have the time I will do all of my favorite "looks" I have created.
I didn't realize how easy it was to save the presets as a plugin.
Plus I have to figure out how to limit the controls, so that there are only a couple sliders to adjust.
Now if I can only make the plugin my producer requested...one that lengthens the time of the show, but keeps the same pace. Anyone?

  • Color Correction - In Premiere CS5 or After Effects CS5?????

    Hello
I started this question in Premiere, but am now thinking that perhaps I should take advantage of the additional color correction tools in CS5 After Effects.....
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/777459?tstart=0
If any one is interested in helping me do this in AE CS5, here is a copy and paste of the question from the above link:
I have two clips that I need to color correct.  Please see attached.   I want to brighten up the clip on the BOTTOM to more match the clip on  the TOP
The cinematographer has given me these instructions:
"  Specially the third clip with the two foxes ) shots are dark compared  to the second  time the foxes are shown. You will have to apply a color  correction  filter on them and work with the midtone and the light  sliders so you  can make it a bit brighter.  Also you will probably need  to bring the  balcks down a bit once you pushed the midtones, you will  have to see  what it looks like once you are correcting."
I haven't done much color correcting, but the above seems pretty basic.  So any suggestions you have will be appreciated.

To make those changes all you really need to do is adjust the levels... so apply a "levels" effect and adjust accordingly... in either Premiere or After Effects... it works the same in both.

  • Color Correction -- render does NOT match preview

Something seems very odd about Color Correction.
I select a clip that is too dark. I adjust the slider to lighten it up while previewing. It looks perfect.
Now I APPLY and the rendered video is very different. Typically now way too light.
So I adjust render, adjust render, adjust render. This seems a crazy way to do edit!
Why doesn't the render match the preview?
PS: Sometimes only part of a clip renders with the remainder being black. What's going on?

    Hi
    Not really knowing.
    a. The tool in iMovie HD 6 crude near of no use
    b. How do You judge the result. On Your Mac monitor - Not so good just an approx.
I connect my miniDV tape Camera via FireWire
Connect the analog out to a small TV/Monitor
Set in iMovie "Playback via Camera"
This picture on the TV/Monitor is very close to my final product
    c. Color-correcting tool in iMovie'08 are better than in previous versions
BUT the link "Playback to Camera" Doesn't exist any longer (MAJOR FAULTH)
    d. This made me taking the step over to FinalCut Express with Near Pro tools to
do this. And a setting can be copied and applied to several clips that need same
    correction.
    Yours Bengt W

  • I don't see my color correction filters?

    Hello again,
I'm working with a subclip that I created from a capture that I made from my video camera and I am having trouble finding the color correction tools that were available when I went through the Color Correction tutorial. I opened up my video in the viewer and switched to the Color Correction window layout. In my viewer I have the following tabs, Video, Mono (a1), Mono (a2), Filters, and Motion where I can't find any of the settings for brightness or RGB control. How do I find these controls?
    Thanks

Have you added the 3 way color correction filter to the clip?

  • Color correction help - step-by-step

I'd appreciate some help with a snippet from a video I posted on YouTube.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DFqIQPH_iU
This video was shot with three cameras. The wide shot has the most "correct colors". The video from that wide shot camera is what I want to use as my benchmark. I want to get the two "close up" cameras to match, as much as possible, the colors from the "wide shot" camera,
The two close up cameras have a little too much saturation in at least the red areas -- note the reds in the painted background. The close ups have a bit too much red, which is particularly noticeable in the painted background
So my question is what Adobe CS5 color correction tools should I use to give me the color correction I need.
For example, in what order should I use the various color correction tools? Or is there one tool I can use that will "fix" it all.
    Thanks

    shooternz wrote:
Its going to be a bit trial and error because thats the way it is in the CC workflow.
I agree its a bit of a saturation (red) issue which you already identified so deal with that.
Try LEVELS in the red channels (and most likely red gamma - which is the mids)
Shouldnt be too difficult because its not too bad as it is.
Maybe with LEVELS drop the RGB Gamma (or Black) to bring the BG down a bit on the refernce clip ( effectively saturating it a little more)
Tip: Set up a Reference Monitor with the reference clip.
    Hi
I am on another computer this morning without Premiere -- I assume a Reference Monitor is one I set up within Premiere -- not a physical external monitor.
I will try your suggestions -- BTW is an eyedropper included in Levels?   So I can do some color matching, or is that something completely different.

  • Eye Dropper Tool (Color Picker Tool) not working correctly - Premiere CC - Windows 8 - Multiple Displays

I'm running Windows 8, Premiere CC 2014 with two monitors. The eye dropper tool (color picker tool) isn't working correctly. It is selecting colors that are not the colors being hovered over. I've reasearched and see solutions to the problem when occurring with Mac, but do not see a solution for Windows. When I disconnect the second monitor, the eye dropper tool works correctly (as described by Mac users). I deleted any profiles for the montors that weren't the same, and still having the issue. I've also tried putting the source monitor on the second monitor, and tried sampling color from there... same result.

    Hello All,
Problem solved...I reset all tools in the Tool Preset window. Seems to be working.
    Hope this helps someone...
    Cheers!

  • Masked color correction - new Pr Pro CC features or still use After Effects?

I am finally getting around to this project. I know in CS6 the solution was to use After Effects.  I think I kept putting it off as I was not as familiar with that program as I am with PrPro.
Anyway this is the issue.  I have 2 hours of old video I have captured that due to an internal camera malfunction (that was not discovered until the end of the tape)
that has 5 or 6 cyan tinted narrow horizontal transparent bars running through it.  The image is there under the bars, it is just viewed through this cyan
tint. The rest of the image outside of the bars is fine and the image inside the bars is fine, it just has a tint.  This is old SD footage.
An AE expert said I can make an Adjustment Layer in AE and use the Mask Shape Tool to draw several boxes around the problem cyan areas, apply the Curves and Hue/Saturation effect to the adjustment layer, then color correct. Some feathering would be needed (I know PS too so I can handle that part ) I think I recall back with PrProCS6, I could do this adjustment but only one bar at a time. I could be wrong about that.
But anyway, sounds pretty easy in AE. But since I live in PrPro CC 2014 now, and I saw some recent new features with masks and adjustments, I was wondering if I could perform the same adjustments right in Pr Pro CC 2014?  If I need to use AE CC 2014, no worries, I have that installed.
Thanks for the help as always!  This is family footage that I would really like to rescue.

Thanks so much Dave.  It fixed the problem.
