Color crashes setting Video Output to Blackmagic.

I just opened my first project in Color. A 60s commercial digitized from HDCAM-SR to Blackmagic 23.976 10bit RGB. When I try to set the Video Output to the correct output, the program crashes.
I have reason to believe that my Decklink HD Pro card installed in the PowerMac Dual 2GHz system I'm running on is incompatible with Color. Is there a list somewhere of what cards are supported? According to the Silicon Color site, Final Touch 2k, Apple Color before it was purchased, there is a compatibility list and my card is not on it. However there have obviously been some minor changes done.
Anyone else have trouble with this?

I'm using a Decklink HD Pro card in a Dual 2.5 G5 without a problem. Here's what I'd do to try to fix your problem (before trying to hack the prefs):
• Download the latest drivers and Uninstall, then Install the BM drivers and restart.
• Delete Color's prefs, then open Color and select the display. If it works, Color should remember the output settings from then on. I'd also re-do the Send to Color just in case the previous Send was corrupted.
Also, some common problem around here seems to be people running two display cards and people not turning off the Video Desktop in the Decklink preference panel. Both of these things will kill your setup.

  • What do you need to get video output to external monitor

    Hello,
I'm fairly new to Color and have read a few posts that color can't be viewed by firewire to an external monitor. Basically what I have right now for external viewing in FCP is a JVC SR-VS30 Mini DV NTSC deck with firewire connected to my computer. From the deck it goes to a small TV set and a Sony Trinitron PVM color video monitor. What do I need extra to be able to see my color correction in Color on an external monitor. BTW in Color currently the Video Output tab in Setup>User Prefs is grayed out showing Disabled. I suppose that when I get whatever I need to see Color on an external monitor that this tab would NOT be grayed out or would I have to set some other settings.
    Thanks.

Well, you can waste a lot of time and money trying to get your old iron up to speed but the sad fact is, even though it may work with Color, it will most likely end in a less than satisfactory experience all around. You need to determine if your G5 has PCI, PCI-x or PCIe slots and then purchase the appropriate cards.
However, Final Cut Studio 2 is optimized for the Intel processors. You will see users here and there using the newest models G5 with great success but quite honestly, you need a Mac Pro.
Or just purchase the Aja IO/HD which is a firewire 800 interface and the only firewire device that will preview externally Color.

  • No video output option at movie project setting can not use my blackmagic video card

no video output option at movie project setting can not use my blackmagic video card

There's no change if I hold command-R to boot into recovery. The mac chimes on powerup but nothing else seems to happen.
The machine has an SSD drive in it so I can't even listen to hear if it is loading anything or acting differently when I try different keypresses.
As I had some spare RAM lying around, I've tried swapping that in but no change there either. I still suspect it's a software rather than hardware problem, but without any way to control the boot up, I'm not sure how I can fix it.
I do have remote time machine backups - is there any way of restoring these manually, perhaps by removing the drive from the mac and copying the backup data over using another system? (Unfortunately I don't have any other mac systems to experiment with this, though)

After Effects warning: couldn't set Quicktime video output display mode
I'm getting this error when exporting video from after effects. I also get it when the program starts up. I'm using Windows XP. Cannot find anything about a fix anywhere. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks for your reply. I profess ignorance regarding the GDI only mode and have no idea how to access that. Can you give me a little more info on that?
I am using an ATI Radeon HD 3850. I have two monitors on that card, Monitor one is a Trinitron HP 1130 CRT.(set to 1280x1024 16bit) The other is DVI wide screen Ilo 26 inch monitor. (1024x768 at 32 bit)
I have a BlackMagic Design DECKLINK standard definition broadcast card which outputs component video to a sony broadcast Beta deck. 480ix720 standard video.
The machine has a gigabyte motherboard. Intel Core 2 quad cpu 2.66 ghz
2.50 gb ram reported (4gigs installed)
These hasn't been a major issue as I can still output AVI uncompressed but it is annoying.

  • Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle Thunderbolt video output issues

I got Intensity Shuttle TB to output to my monitors via hdmi and component however I am getting latency issues. I've tried all the settings in the system preferences as well as inside Premiere Pro. Also, when viewing a clip in the source window, video output disappears. I've tried the latest drivers as well as the older ones and reinstalled Premiere. Would like to resolve this asap! I tested the Intensity Shuttle with Final Cut Pro 7 and it's as smooth as butter and I'm able to view video output while in the source and programs windows. Is this an Intensity Shuttle issue or an Adobe Premiere issue?--->No video output to monitors while in the source window...Latency issues while viewing video in the timeline/program window. AVCHD Footage....
Macbook Pro 2012 8GB RAM MacOS 10.8.3 Premiere CS6 6.0.2 BlackMagic Intensity Shuttle Thunderbolt 9.7.2 DesktopVideo Driver

OK, got one part solved. I uninstalled Blackmagic's Desktop Video 9.7.2 and reverted back to Desktop Video Driver 9.6.9. Everything is smooth now...no latency/dropped framed looking video.
The only other thing I'm trying to resolve now is video output while viewing a clip in the source monitor.  When I double click a clip in the timeline to view in the Source monitor I'm able to view video output to my hdmi and component monitors.  However, when I double click a clip in the Project window to view in the Source monitor, both hdmi/component monitors go out of sync with no video output.
ie: clip from timeline viewed in Source monitor: I'm able to see video output
clip from Project Window viewed in Source monitor: No video output
Update: When I double click on a 720x405 .jpg from the Project window to view in the source window, i'm able to view video output to both monitors(hdmi/component). On a 960x720 .jpg, no video output from the source window.
Pretty strange and I hope this info is making sense to Adobe Support.  Would appreciate feedback on resolving this issue! I'm hoping this is a simple Adobe Premiere setting that I might've missed.
NOTE: Desktop Video Driver 9.6.8 also has smooth playback but I installed 9.6.9 since it is the last update of version 9.6.

  • AE performance with AJA / Blackmagic video output

    Hi,
is there any way to improve the performance of AE when working with video output? I have an AJA Kona LHe installed on one workstation and a Blackmagic Decklink Studio on a different workstation. I work with 1920x1080 DPX-sequences most of the time. RAM-Preview works fine (means realtime) when I deactivate my video-preview. But with video preview activated I get a frame rate around 15-20 fps.
I know that AE is not supposed to provide a perfect video preview in realtime, but is there any way to improve this a little bit?
    Fun facts:
    - when turning my quality to half or quarter, the frame rate is even lower (around 10-15 fps)
    - different source material acts different...quicktimes give me realtime sometimes, dpx sequences result in 15-20 fps. I mean - AE is putting the comp into the RAM ("RAM-Preview") - shouldn't it make no difference what source material in my comp is?
    Thanks!

    *push*
Exact same issues here! We just rented an AJA IO Express to test it before buying and the tests were not very satisfying! Furthermore, when you make a RAM-preview of something with audio, the audio plays at the correct speed of course and the video at the above mentioned 15fps! So the audio of a 30sec-Spot ends about 6 seconds earlier than the video!
For almost 1 and a half years no response with a solution... Could maybe someone from Adobe tell us, if there is any by now?
    Thanks!

  • External monitor: problem to enable video output

    Hello,
I try to use an external monitor.
I usually use it by a camcorder and a Firewire PAL in FCP without any problem.
In Color, if I go in User preferences, Video output is set on disabled and the others (for example Digital Cinema preview or Firewire Pal) are all gray and I cannot set them.
    Thank you for your help.

    Luca,
Please refer to the included documentation. Color does not and will not send external video through firewire to any device, save one, and that is the Aja IO HD and then that device is limited to standard definition video only.
This "issue" has also been well covered in this and other forums: you need an input/output card manufactured by [Aja|http://www.aja.com/html/products_macintosh.html] or by [Blackmagic Designs|http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products>.

  • Color crashes on launch

    Hi folks,
I'm having problems with Color constantly 'quitting unexpectedly' on launching. It generally quits just before you see the first image displayed on the scopes / screen, and before the thumbnails in the timeline appear. A couple of days ago it would work some of the time, before the controls would suddenly become unresponsive. Now it seems to quit every time at the same point.
I tried re-installing FCP studio and the proapps update for 1.04, repairing permissions, disconnecting my second monitor, reinstalling the decklink drivers, and screaming at it really loudly, but none of this has had any results.
The system is a G5 Quad running 10.5.6 and QT 7.6, with ATI X1900 G5 edition graphics card and Decklink HD Pro. All the latest FCP studio updates. It used to work just fine, I can't think of anything particular that has changed.
    Any ideas? Thanks....
PS The crash report always says something along the lines of:

    Guy,
I don't know if you're still monitoring this thread or have found a solution, but I have just encountered a very similar (but not exact) problem using Apple Color after upgrading to Leopard. Before upgrading to Leopard, everything worked flawlessly under Tiger. I upgraded to Leopard, via the update path a few days ago. I first noticed the problem earlier today when starting Color for the first time since the OS upgrade. It didn't crash, but I got the spinning beach ball of death for several seconds every time I clicked on the timeline, making it painfully slow to just navigate. the clip thumbnails also were slow to load. I have a DeckLink HD Extreme on my Mac Pro and have the external monitor in Color set to output via the DeckLink. When I set the VALUE for "video output" to "DISABLED", the problem goes away entirely. Simply checking the "Disable vid-out during playback" button did not fix the problem. I had to actually select "DISABLED" in the "video out:" drop-down box.
I don't know at this point if I will have further problems with Color. I will know more tomorrow. But at least I think I narrowed the spinning beach ball problem to a DeckLink HD Extreme / Leopard issue. In any case, I now have an issue in being able to use my external monitor for color grading.

  • Video output via FW deck

Running on MBP in the field, can I monitor Color video out via FW connected to DVCPro deck then out to NTSC monitor? FCP outputs fine. In Color the video output selection is greyed out... jPo? Shane?
    Thanks

    Thanks.
That's too bad, it'd be nice to show some options on set with a basic FW interface... wouldn't wanna schlep all that gear around...

  • Clips from Project bin to source monitor causing video output to go out of sync(CS6 and CC)

Any footage I double-click or drag from the Project window to the Source monitor causes my video output to go out of sync. When I put the clips in the timeline, video goes back in sync and I'm able to view video output.  My monitors are connected to a Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle Thunderbolt(9.7.5) via component and HDMI. Is this normal behavior in Premiere or is there a setting to enable this? No issues doing this in FCP7(clips from Project window to Canvas).
Can someone with an I/O from AJA, Matrox, or Blackmagic please test this out for me. Thanks...

    Hi Joe,
How do you have your audio setup? Try the following.
    - Set your OS system sound to Built-in or Line out audio
    - Select Blackmagic for both Video and Audio in Preferences> Playback
    - Select System Default Input/Output from Preferences> Audio Hardware
    Hope this helps,

  • External Video Output

    Hi,
I'm having trouble sending the image from Color to an external monitor for accurate color balancing. When I go to Video Output pop up menu in the set up preferences, the only option they let me click is "Disabled". It's an HD image to a Sony HDV deck which converts it down to a SD monitor, but IO can do it in Final Cut, so I'm not sure why I can't do it in Color. Any suggestions?
    Message was edited by: jesterhead

You'll need a third party i/o device to handle the conversion for you. If you have a MacPro, the Black Magic Intensity cards (at the low end) up to the AJA Kona series cards (at the upper end) will work. Mid way are the Matrox MXO series of external boxes - most of which will work with an expresscard34 capable laptop as well.

  • Couldn't open Quicktime video output component.

I was able to find 2 other posts in regards to the error. The one didn't have enough information to be answered and the other had a link to an apple page that no longer exists. Sorry for the repeat but I can't seem to find an answer that applies to me.
The "After Effects warning: Couldn't open Quicktime video output component." message appears when I open AFX and is waiting for me when I come back to it from another program. In AFX's Preferences window under Video Preview I have set my Output Device to Digital Cinema Desktop. No options ever show up in the Output Model drop down. As you can probably guess I am trying to get my second display to preview the composition full screen.
For other reasons, I just had to reinstall OSX (10.5.7). Then I installed Adobe Production Premium CS3 and the Final Cut Suite HD.
My computer is a 4 core Mac Pro with 7GB of memory. I don't have any Matrox hardware. Actually I don't have anything except the 2 DVI monitors, battery backup, analog speakers, mouse and keyboard plugged into the computer.
I have held down apple + option + shift while starting up AFX to reset the Preferences as well as replaced the DesktopVideoOut.component file with one from another working computer in the /Library/Quicktime folder finally I have tried Repairing Disk Permissions.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Benjamin: The Digital Cinema Desktop is a Final Cut feature, even if implemented as a Quicktime Video out component. As you can see (by the lack of options) is not really meant to be invoked from other applications which use standard Quicktime video out for external previews. That requires a device with a proper QT video out driver. You could use an inexpensive device, like a Blackmagic Intensity with an HDMI to DVI cable, to feed the second display.
Or you could just ask AE to play RAM previews at full screen, in which case you don't need to enable video previews at all. Together with the ability to take into account a calibrated display's profile, this should make for very high quality previewing on computer monitors.

  • TV (video) output from new nano looks very good!

Just a comment for those who may be wondering how the video quality on the new iPod nano looks when output to a TV. I have one of the old iPod AV docks with the s-video port and the new nano seems to work fine with that combination (using a standard s-video cable between the dock and the TV). Thus far I'm really impressed with the video quality, I can't see a single problem, the color is good, the quality and sharpness is as good as I've seen from any iTunes Store content, and as far as I can tell the frame rate is fine (no stuttering, skipped frames, or problems with audio sync). I'm amazed that such high quality video can come from such a small device. If it continues to look this good (after viewing more content and after more testing) then I think Apple may have "hit one out of the park." This thing could turn out to be the most popular iPod yet (if you have any interested in video and still want a small device).

I just found out that the video out (TV) on the new nano supports video playlists so you can create playlists for back-to-back display on the TV. Not even the AppleTV will do that (even though the latter has been a highly requested feature for the AppleTV since day one). In fact, if you can do without the on-TV menus you may find that the nano is a better video output device than is the AppleTV (that is, the menus system on the nano doesn't appear on the TV output).
Also, I just competed a few hours of video playback to my big-screen TV from the nano and I'm still impressed. No video problems at all, looks very good considering the quality limitation from the content that is currently on the iTunes Store (limited to standard definition, no HD movies, HD TV, or HD music videos as yet).

  • Video output failure

    I have a 2008 black MacBook, a Mini-DVI-to-VGA adapter and a Mini-DVI-to-"Video" adapter (AKA a Mini-DVI-to-RCA-and-S-Video adapter). The -to-VGA adapter /was/ working fine.
After I got the -to-video adapter I was having some problems making it work. A few places said I had to set it to 50Hz (which makes no sense as NTSC is 60Hz, but anyway), but that option wasn't available to me. I poked around, and apparently made the video out go completely insane. Now, when I plug in either adapter (regardless of whether anything is plugged in to them), the screen goes blue for a moment as if it's detecting a new display, but then it just goes back to normal with no new display detected. Running "detect displays" manually makes no difference, and neither does having something plugged in on the other end or not.
At this point, I can't use video output for any purpose, which is sort of annoying ...

  • My new (2 weeks old) Macbook Pro, wont send video output signal to beamer... What can I do?  I have the adapter to vga but it does not work...

Hi, I have a new MacBook Pro and I dont get video output to a beamer although I have the regular
Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter and it works fine with my older MacBook...
Thanks a lot for your tips...

That should work. When you first hook it up it will probably have the display set in Extended Desktop mode. The Menu Bar and Dock will be on the MacBook display and your background screen on the TV but you can move the cursor onto the TV screen.
In SystemPreferences>Display on the MacBook screen there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will make the second monitor your main screen. You can now use your MacBook in Clamshell Mode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.
Or if you want to work on the MacBook screen while showing it on a TV you can check the Mirror Display box on the lower left hand side of the Arrangement tab under the two monitors box.
If you also want audio you'll need audio cables to the TV using a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs. You attach it from the headphone jack of your MacBook to the appropriate input plugs on your TV http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=min i-dvi&x=9&y=13#/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_2_19?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=macboo k+audio+cable&sprefix=macbook+audio+cable&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Amacbook+audio+cable
