Color desaturation in final burn.

Just so everyone knows I did in fact read the other thread about this topic ( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1569304&#1569304 ), but there didn't seem to be any valuable info on how to resolve this problem (short of spending $800 on a video proc amp to adjust black levels that aren't a problem for me anyway).
My problem is that I have a properly calibrated studio monitor that I use with FCP to color correct (calibrated with color bars from FCP), so I fail to understand why if I use my computer's LCD as well as an external CRT monitor to compare and contrast color balance and I export a full res QuickTime to make sure I'm not losing anything in the export while also seeing the material look great in the viewer window of DVD SP, why the final result looks to far off?
I too upgraded to DVD Studio Pro 4 recently with a clean install (my computer's drive crashed so, I re-installed the whole Studio package clean). I don't recall ever having this issue with SP 3 before. Is there something I need to calibrate in my system? Is it really just a matter of a lousy A/D conversion?

You may want to take a look again at the second page of the article, it sounds like that maybe what is happening with you MiniDV Setup (putting out IRE 0 ) so it looks darker than what is actually going on
http://www.signvideo.com/dv-black-level-dvd-7.5-ire-0-ntsc-part-2.htm
If I can't use a professional monitor to do color correction, how does anyone get the results they want?
Many get cards (like the Aurora's) in towers which do conversion to 7.5 IRE for color correction. Are you you using FCP's scopes to see what is going on? Actually pretty easy to start getting into the ballpark with just setting Contrast in Waveform and RGB Parade. Check to see where your Blacks and Whites are, and use 3 Way Color Corrector (you can see if not enough blacks or whites blown out) and that often helps alot in making things appear less washed out.
There is a book by Alexis Van Hurkman, Advanced Color Correction and Effects in Final Cut Pro 5 that I really liked. A couple of small sections alone makes it worthwhile even if you do not read any other part of the book. (At least it worked for me that way) In about an hour the descriptions on set up and contrast adjustments went a real long way. Not that I recommend doing it this way, but it was so clear that I can just look at scopes on a Powerbook now and start getting the results "in the ballpark".
Also remember each TV will make things look different, took me a long time to accept it

  • Color Loss (Desaturation) after final burn

    Here's a challenge...
I have color loss after I burn a DVD. It looks as though it is heavily desaturated or washed out??? I have tried a few different routes, all giving me the same result.
1 - An original QT self-contained movie that I use the SP4 built-in compression is fine UNTIL burnt.
2 - An export through Compressor to MPEG2 is fine UNTIL burnt.
3 - A master compressed through Cleaner is also fine UNTIL burnt.
This happens with both QT movies that have originated on Avid and FCP.
Also, this color loss / desaturation happens on both iDVD and Studio Pro.
I have compiled numerous tests as can be seen by these few and still no luck. Has anyone else ever had this problem???
    Thanks for your time.
    P. Bolte

Burning or building a project will NOT affect the quality of a previously-encoded MPEG2 file. It only muxes in the audio and builds the DVD. It does not touch the original MPEG2 video data.
If you are seeing a quality difference, it can only be due to what you're using to view files before you make the DVD, and what you're using to view files after you make the DVD.
PS: Cleaner stinks at MPEG2 encoding. Use ANYTHING else.

So I finally burned a DVD out of a Apple Pro Res file into iDVD in PAL format. My question now is how can I find out what the exact burn properties were so that I can apply the same burn properties to a project in Compressor 4?
Is it possible to see what iDVD did?

I don't know any way you can interrogate iDVD to reveal settings to the extent that you can in a Compressor project. What you could do is open up the show's VOB in MPEG STreamclip, go to File and Reveal Stream Information; that will at least give you some rudimentary info like average bit rate. Perhaps someone, with more iDVD experience, can chime in here.
The broader question is why use Compressor at all if your current workflow is doing the job to your satisfaction?
The value of Compressor is that it gives you control over the many parameters that affect size quality.  and playability. The Compressor presets can give you a starting point for DVD delivery, Web, etc. From those presets, people typically experiment by adjusting the parameters until they get the desired results for their specific show. It's a little bit science and a little bit art. After experimenting, you may be able to get slightly better quality for the project you've successfully burned in iDVD by using Compressor and something likeToast…or maybe not.
    Good luck.

  • How can i improve burning quality of dvd.looks fine in preview on idvd, but final burn quality is poor/

how can i improve burning quality of dvd.looks fine in preview on idvd, but final burn quality is poor.

Had same problem with iPhoto pictures and poor burn quality. Went back to original picture file and dragged images into idvd project from there. Set encoding at professional quality and burned at slowest speed. Got very good result with high quality slideshow when played on TV.
Also tried Old Toad's Aug 30, 2011 advice to get a slideshow into iDVD with transitions, music, etc. from iPhoto.
Again the quaility of the burned CD was very good.

  • IDVD keeps ejecting my disc before final burn can anyone help

    • Material used: Video-Codec and Photo file format and Audio file format - matters too. I use
    - Video - StreamingDV .dv or AIC
    - Photos as .jpg (only)
    - Audio as .aiff 16bit 44.1kHz or 48kHz (ONLY - never .mp3 or directly from iTunes - all converted to .aiff first)
With this I do not mean any setting in iDVD - BUT the raw material used in iMovie / FinalCut / Avid 100 / Adobe Premiere
As this usually matters - later in iDVD
How did You Export from Video-editing program used ? I prefer
    • iMovie HD6 - just drop the movie project icon (NOT iMovie Icon - the PROJECT one) over into iDVD big menu window (avoiding - drop-zones as they are for other tasks)
    • iMovie'08 to '11 - Share to MEDIA BROWSER - AND AS MEDIUM - not HD or other resolution as iDVD does a bad downscaling job.
    • iMovie'13 (version 10.0.x) - Share as 480p - Import this into iDVD
    • FinalCut (Pro or Express) - Export as QuickTime .mov - NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION - IMPORTANT
    • Adobe Premiere - I don't know - not tested Yet
    • Avid 100 - I don't know - not tested Yet
Cleaning the DVD-burner - If it Burns DVDs OK then that's may be not the problem - But if it only burns CDs OK then either the DVD-burning-laser is dirty or broken.
It is very easy to kill this DVD-laser as it over-heats if one burns several DVDs in a row. I only burn three at a time - then let it cool down for 30 minutes till next batch of three DVDs.

  • Color Space Management & Final Color Output-not WYSIWYG?

I have constantly had problems with getting final output color to match what i am seeing on my monitors when color correcting. This has been a continual problem mainly with R3d footage and going to Prores...but for the sake of this discussion here is my prime example:
Start a new project in PrPro and clor from PrPro adding effects, 3 way color, 3rd party effects like Finesse and Colorista...then output the project to Tiff for master then convert from Tiff sequence to Prorest; H264 or anything else....But, when i output a prores file, and then open the prores file on its own--not brining it back into Premier...i notice a shift in colors....completely desaturated etc...this happens whehter i choose for gamma as "auto" or "none" when choosing codec settings for prores. I've had this continual problem for many years and the ONLY way i have found it to work is by using Apple's Color and then going to Prores....seems apple hardware and software work well together...but this cannot be an isolated incident with me only...AND coloring a project on your desktop and putting all that work into it and seeing it DIFFERENT at the end of the day is more than a let down...
...so maybe a discussion on properly setting a project for color work is in order...I came across another forum members website reToolednet and he had some great info on setting up the sequence timeline and video preview area that is great info...but even when i do that i cannot get a perfect match at the end of the output....Exapmples below all done in PrPro and then output to Prores 4444.
I've found info on Adobe site that does not seem current about setting project settings and color space, but no place in PrPro do i find that setting...is this only AE?  OR...can we even do a proper color job within PrPr?  or should that be done elsewhere?
Id like to go through the proper steps of setting workspace and color schemes for say a Prores output since that is likely 75% to 90% of everyone's deliverables in the tv realm....
Snapsot of Tiff sequence WITHIN PrPro (colored)
Final Output from PrPro to Prores--snap from actual QT prores file--(Desaturated)
When i began this project i had my sequence settings to R3d 1080p @ 29.97 and video previews to Iframe....
**NOW, i think i would have been better off to change video preview to my final output of Prores 4444...BUT, i tried that and still see a color shift.
**Note, i oriingally colored this on 5.5 with Matrox out to my color corrected monitors....and results on those monitors DO and WILL be diffrent than what you see on your computer screen....my monitors were set to rec709 and RGB at end of the line for viewing....but i see nothing within PrPro on how to set this....however at end of the day i do not get what i see on my preview monitors....

Thanks Jim....yes, i'm covered on all cc monitors and quite used ot viewing output on color calibrated...as well viewing both on the same platform/monitor....The BIG question is PrPr being able to do color work---and my question is why would it have all the color effects if it did not?  But i agree with you....first place to start is can you do proper color work on PrPr AT ALL?  no problem to do a quick web video...but can you properly color a for television product---I seem to think NO....i could not get colors in end to match....i can view out on PrPr view my I/O box (Matrox MXO2) and see great colors that i colored the project on to my FSI color corrected monitor....but then when i view the ProRes file back (not on PrPro)...but on it's own with its own codec engine...this is where things go awry and stray from colors i originally put on the images...
But this is a PARAMOUNT subject as Pr is offering coloring....i hate to bring this in, but in FCP i can get accurate colors on my Matrox and same when rendered out to Prores file....Again, i think Apple plays well with apple.....but as you say, there are a great number of varialbes involved in the preferences etc...within PrPr...seems to me AE may be better just by reading about it...but why not both?

  • Updating color sequences from final cut

I am completely new to Color but really like the extra control it seems to have over FCP color options. I am wondering how one goes about adding new clips to an already timed Color file? Basically, I have most of my fcp sequence in place and want to get a head start on the timing phase but there is one shot in particular that we cannot yet shoot. What is the best way to time what I have, resend to fcp, and then when the new shot is added to my timed sequence, import everything into color, have my grades still show up on the other clips so I can transfer them to the new clip, and then re-export? Hope that makes sense.

"Color timing" is more of an analog concept with actual lights and timers than it is a digital concept.
Typically, one doesn't start color work until the edit is locked. However, if you're chomping at the bit, you can change your edit within FCP and then follow the "reconform" procedure outlined within the Color User Manual. Be aware that the reconform procedure has been historically problematic for Color (Final Touch).

  • Final Burn Not Working On All DVD Players

Hey Guys - I just completed a DVD (first time using DVDSP) for a client and they just called to tell me that the master copy isn't working on some DVD players they've tried. It's been working on their computers, and it worked on my Samsung DVD player at home, but they're having issues. I just upgraded to Final Cut Studio 2. If I need to include more info about the project just ask. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Take a look at this thread about some things for compatibility
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=979439&tstart=0
When they say isn't working, do they mean not playing or not playing well? How did you burn the disc?
Did you do a clean install of the Studio (removed other versions?) there seemed to be some issues with that (more so in otheer apps)

  • Question about moving a project from FCP to Premiere to do color correcting/sound finalizing.

My friend and i have been editing a film on FCP express. I've been learning more about editing and color correcting recently and have been teaching myself on  Adobe Premiere. I offered to color correct the film on Premiere on my system. I'm curious what the best way to do this would be. is it possible to take the timeline from FCB with the raw data and somehow open that in CS? Or should he export the pre corrected final cut without correcting as a certain type of file, then I work on that, then export that as the final cut?

If FCP express has XML export, then you can export the project and then import the XML into Premiere Pro.  It will give you the basics of the timeline and basic transforms for each clip (position, scale, rotation).  However, not everything comes across - titles and 3rd party effects will not come across.
Given that, another option is to render out the entire movie and then grade it in Premiere Pro.  But you lose a lot of control if you go that way.
The third option is to import into Premiere Pro and rebuild the bits you might be missing from FCP and then you have both the control and options.
    Hope this helps,
    Dennis

  • Translating Lightroom color correcting to Final Cut pro...

    Hi all,
My director friend has seen me color correct images in LR with grace and skill, and wants me to start doing color correction for his films. I have never used Final Cut Pro before, and wondered if the controls in Final Cut were similar to LR, if you could export and import between the two, and generally what the difference was between working with color in each. He has one of the RED cameras, which shoots in RAW, so I assume the different can't be too great. If anyone's proficient in both, the lowdown would be much appreciated!
    Thanks!
    Alec

If he shoots with RED, why isn't he using RED's copy of Lightroom that's specifically for their cameras, and is provided free?  It's called RedCineX, I think.

  • DVDSP final burn issue

Finally getting to burn stage in my attempt to convert HD to SD letterbox but always get a "Video TS_Folder in build" that stops the progress. How would I remove/alter that?

Thanks, check my previous msg as to what I did. I tried all that Compression stuff and DVDSP and it all just didn't work, almost like I was missing one or two important points. Trouble with advice in this forum sometimes is that the helper presumes that the helpee knows what he does.
I appreciate it and all, but I'm just not good at Compression and DVDSP, and I have a friend much more tech than me coming over on the wk-end to show me step-by-step. I'm simply not there yet and any explanation has proved to be too complex, as dumb as that sounds, at least for me. There's always a step or two missing, but sometimes it works. Trouble with FCP also is that it has so many ways to do a single job.
I did accomplish my goal as indicated in the msg before yours, in a round-about way that probably is regarded as basic, but it worked, I got my letterbox DVDs.
    thanks again
