Color difference after adding gradient feather

Hi,
As soon as I apply gradient feather to the black box the image color changes drastically.
The imported image is a psd file & in grayscale mode.
This problem exists in CS6 & CC version of indesign
Any suggestions on fixing this?
Regards,
Arihant

I bet it actually looks like that in Overprint Preview before you add the feather, too.
ID does not recognize grasycale color profiles, on import. It takes the numbers and puts them into the K channel of the document's CMYK working space. The transparency effect forces ID to use the overprint preview to display the effect and you get a more accurate on-screen rendition of what your output should look like. It could be lighter or darker, depending on the gray and CMYK profiles involved.
If you want to get a better idea of how your grayscale will look coming out of ID when you are doing the conversion in Photoshop you can create a custom gray space inthe Photoshop color settings by choosing "Load Gray" from the dropdown, then choosing the CMYK profile that you use in ID from the load dialog, and the Black Ink channel will be used.

  • Weird difference after adding a new imap account.

Well, this is weird, unlike my other accounts this is what it looks like when I add new folders on this account.
Anybody have any idea why this would happen? I'm running tiger and the most up to date patches.
    powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Read from: http://www.courier-mta.org/?FAQ.html
Q: Can't create folders, only subfolders of INBOX
This is a configuration issue with your mail client. IMAP servers are free to use any folder namespace arrangement that's technically convenient for them. Courier uses "INBOX." as the namespace for private folders, and "shared." as the namespace for public, shared, folders. The IMAP NAMESPACE extension (see http://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc2342.txt) allows IMAP clients to automatically discover where the server creates folders, and your IMAP client should implement it.
This should be completely transparent to you, if your IMAP client properly uses the NAMESPACE extension. If your IMAP client were to automatically take advantage of self-configuration features offered by RFC 2060 and RFC 2342, it would automatically discover, without any additional configuration from the user, that:
The folder namespace hierarchy separator is the . character
Private folders are stored underneath the "INBOX." hierarchy
Public folders are stored underneath the "shared." hierarchy
If you have to explicitly create folders that are subfolders of INBOX, or if you explicitly have to name that "INBOX.foldername", this is due to your IMAP client not being able to configure itself accordingly.
A: Correct. IMAP servers are free to define any root of the folder namespace tree that's convenient for them. Courier's IMAP server uses INBOX as the folder namespace root, rather than the root hierarchy itself. Courier supports the NAMESPACE IMAP extension which allows compliant IMAP clients to automatically configure themselves so that the folder namespace root is transparent. Submit an enhancement request to have your IMAP client gracefully handle the folder namespace root.
Does this mean that Mail.app isn't rfc compliant when dealing with imap?

  • Applying a Gradient Feather with a Drop Shadow...

    Howdy,
I am currently working in Indesign CS3 and I have an outlined image in my document and I am applying a gradient feather so that the image fades from opaque to transparent at the bottom. If I apply a black colored drop shadow to the object the image's color changes slightly because the shadow's color darkens the image where the gradient feather's transparency fades away.
I have checked the box in the shadows menu so that it "Honors the other effects" but it seems to apply no change in the darkening of the bottom of my image. Has there been a fix for this or an update that will eliminate the shadows color effecting my images color?
I was just wondering if you could fix the program so that the shadow takes the gradient feather into consideration and does not interfere with the objects color? Or even add a gradient feather feature to the drop shadow effect itself?
Any suggestions for fixing this other than creating a shadow for the object in Photoshop and importing it into my document. Placing the shadow behind my image and applying a gradient feather that fades out earlier so that the shadows color does not interfere with my image.
Anything on this subject I would be thoroughly grateful for.
    ~Thanks!

Ok sorry this is confusing! Here is the image that I am talking about. I am working in InDesign on a catalog for softball uniforms. I have a ton of these uniform images that I'm attempting to apply a gradient feather as well as a drop shadow. But the drop shadow is effecting the color of the uniforms. I was just wondering it this can be avoided.
Image #1 has both the feather and the drop shadow applied to it. The shadow at the bottom where the image feathers shows through and changes the color of the image. I was just wondering if this can be avoided. You can see the difference it makes when the shadow is not applied on Image 2. I have made sure the drop shadow effect "honors other effects" but it doesn't seem to affect it showing through the feather. I am just wondering if it's possible to avoid having the drop shadow show through the feathered end of an object.
    Thanks for your help everyone!

  • Problems with gradient feather when saving as pdf

I have an InDesign CS4 file which has a high-quality grayscale jpg with a CMYK jpg on top of it. The later has a gradient feather effect applied to it. When I export to pdf, some people (I believe with an older version of Reader or Preview) cannot view the gradient. From a computer like this, it prints the most transparent part of the gradient as the entire gradient, so I think it's still there but very hard to see.
I haven't been able to test it in Reader because I can't find an older version, but I know it doesn't work in an older version of Preview (3.0.9 is what I tried). However, everything I've tried hasn't worked—I've tried changing the Transparency Blend Space to RGB, Exporting as Acrobat 4.0 (which works but looks horrible); I've exported as Press Quality and High Quality Print, and played with profile settings. I've also made sure that all my graphics and profiles match as CMYK, because originally they didn't. The only thing that works is if I open it in my version of Mac Preview (5.0.2) and then Save As a pdf from it. But I'm afraid the colors and perhaps quality are affected in so doing. I've also googled this to no avail.
Has anyone else had this problem? Can someone help?
This is what is should look like.
This is what it does. Notice the color is still in the "contact us" (and all the colors on p.2 are fine).

What version campatibility for Acrobat do you have selected in your export settings? Changing to Acrobat 4 will make it compatible with 4 and later, but you'll wind up falttening the the transparency and heve nasty looking white stitching lines all over the place that will show on screen and print on most desktop devices, not to mention a loss of interactivity, I think.
Reader is free... Tell these people to download an upgrade to the most recent version that will run on their systems rather than trying to dumb down your file.

  • APPCRASH in Acrobat.dll after adding annots with AFExecuteThisScript()

I have a C# app that displays PDFs in a WebBrowser control.   I also have a plug-in that loads annotations into the PDF (i.e. doc.addAnnot(<propertys>)) via calls to AFExecuteThisScript().  It works; the annots are loaded successfully.  However, whenever I do this, I get an APPCRASH after the app has terminated. Since it happens after the app exits, it's out of the debugger's scope.
Since this problem happens only after my plug-in adds annots to the PDF, I'm thinking that something Javascript-related is not being released before the app exits.  I've tried doc.dirty = false after adding each annot, and also docClose() in my plug-in's AVDocWillClose callback, but it doesn't do any good.
This is NOT caused by AFExecuteThisScript() per se.  In other words, I can do AFExecuteThisScript with or without a return value and there's no APPCRASH.  It only seems to happen when I modify the PDF (i.e. add annots) via AFExecuteThisScript().
This is not a showstopper for me but merely an irritant, because it always happens when the application terminates.  Incidentally, it did not seem to happen in Acrobat 8.
Here is the problem signature that is produced in VS 2005 after the app terminates.
    Problem signature:

    Can anyone help?
    Thanks.

I modified my plug-in to enable it when I open a PDF from the file system with Acrobat.exe, and then create a single annot with AFExecuteThisScript().
Everything works fine, the annot is created, and there is no APPCRASH when I quit Acrobat.
I just needed to modify my AVDocDidOpen and AVIdle callbacks to make this work (to allow me to work with PDFs opened in Acrobat.exe from the file system), so everything else about the plug-in (initialization through cleanup) is the same.
One of the last lines of output was:
         'Acrobat.exe': Unloaded 'C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0\Acrobat\Acrobat.dll'
It seems to me that the problem is related to the WebBrowser control, which apparently does not release Acrobat.dll when it destructs.  I've tried manually releasing Acrobat.dll in my app code after Application.Run(theForm); returns, i.e.
         IntPtr handle = GetModuleHandle("Acrobat.dll");
         if (!handle.ToString().Equals("0"))
              FreeLibrary(handle);
but that causes the app to crash on FreeLibrary().
I wonder if it would make any difference if I were to manually load Acrobat.dll in my code, rather than waiting for the WebBrowser control to do it when it opens the PDF.  I noticed that one of the first output lines from Acrobat.exe (after the windows libraries are loaded) is
    ADOBE_READLOGGER_CMD:COMMENT:BeforeOROADOBE_READLOGGER_CMD:COMMENT:AfterORO'Acrobat.exe': Loaded 'C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0\Acrobat\Acrobat.dll', No symbols loaded.
Incidentally, I'm unable to debug my plugin when I run my app in VS 2005.  There's no process that I can attach my plug-in debugger to, probably because Acrobat 9 uses in-process DLLs to render PDFs in browsers.

  • Gradient feather display problem in browser

    Hi,
I have two images/photos to which I applied a gradient feather effect. The documment printed fine, but when the PDF is viewed online in Fire Fox, the gradient feather no longer displays and only the sharp edges of the photo are visible. Is there a specific setting when saving to PDF that I need to select for  best viewing online? I'm on a Mac CS 5.5.
    Thanks!

Thanks for the link to the disucssion. I really didn't get a concrete solution from it though.....
@KodaNuka – I don't think there is a simple method achieving the things you want.
An effect like "Gradient Feather" applied to a text frame most likely will force the text to outline paths during output. No Hyperlink will survive that.
It's best to decouple the Hyperlink from the effect by sandwiching a text frame with the hyperlink above the text frame with the effect setting fill color (and stroke color, if applied) to "None".
If that will not work out, you have to redo the hyperlinks in Acrobat Pro.
To view all that successfully in the PDF viewer of your browser (Firefox in your case) you have to output to sRGB and flatten all transparency effects. If you could do that with your PDF Export settings or through PostScript output and distilling to PDF is up to you. Another chance will be flattening and changing the color space in Acrobat Pro if necessary…
    Just my 2 Euro Cents…

  • CS5 - Color difference between Photoshop and other programs

I'm running CS5.5 student edition on a brand new Asus Q500A laptop running Windows 8. i7 processor and a UMA graphics card.
I do not have calibration software; I'm using Calibrize for the moment and colors appear fairly true when browsing after calibration.
My problem is that overall colors in Photoshop appear more saturated than those in regular browser windows, particularly reds. I set up my computer to run the Win8 photos app and my desktop with Photoshop simultaneously and the color difference was immediately noticeable. I did a quick screen grab to show the difference; the inset photo is the one viewed in Win8's photos app, and the background is the exact same photo open in Photoshop.
This is the second install of this program. I originally installed it on a Dell Inspiron with a DuoCore processor (way out of spec, I know - that's why I upgraded!) and I seem to remember having this issue then, too. I found a way to correct it, but I don't remember how I fixed it and Photoshop is no longer on that machine so I can't look over my settings.
I have not changed the color profile in Photoshop. When installed it chose North America General Purpose 2 as default and I've left it there. I experimented with the other color profiles and while the color tone in Photoshop changes, there is still a difference when the image is viewed in another program.
Any help is much appreciated - I can't trust the program to handle color properly right now and until I can, I'm dead in the water.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree. When I view the image on another computer or my iPhone, the image views properly. It's my photography, from a tree in my back yard. I know how the image is supposed to look, and right now it doesn't look right in Photoshop.
On my previous machine, I am almost positive that it was saving as sRGB by default as well. I don't remember what color profile I was working in, but I know that I did not have a color profile/space error pop up on opening new images, nor do I have that problem on other images saved on that machine that I'm opening on the laptop.

  • EVDRE error after adding new member - AFTER installing SQL 2008 R2 SP1 CU2

    Hi guys.
    We're seeing the same error as detailed in Link:[Re: EVDRE error AFTER expanding on a newly added member, sometimes....;
Basically, any new members that are added appear in the SQL tables, but throw out "EVDRE has encountered a problem..." when trying to use them.
Generally, this problem clear up if we leave the member overnight (although why this should be, I have no idea - the system does nothing extra overnight).
We have tried processing the cube, full processing of the application and even a server reboot, all to no avail.
However, the generally accepted fix for this is to upgrade SQL 2008 R2 to SP1 CU2 (SQL 10.50.2772)
This system was patched to that level before BPC was ever installed, precisely to avoid this problem.
This is not the first time that we have seen this behaviour.
I have experienced it in one other environment, which I keep meaning to rebuild.
These installations are in completely different environments.  The only similarities are that they both use Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL 2008 R2.
The issue only started to appear in this second environment today (we have 3 other environments with the same software version that do not have the problem).
It had been assumed before today that the first problematic environment might need a rebuild due to this issue being caused by some other factor.
However, this is now far too coincidental to be the case.
Has anyone seen similar issues even after patching to v10.50.2772, or does anyone have any suggestions at all.
I could really do with a quick win on this one.
    Thanks

    Hi,
i've had the same issue in the same days. I confirm that the issue appear after adding any member and it's clear overnight.
    My system is different:
Windows Server 2008 NT 6.0 <X64> (Build 6002: Service Pack 2) Enterprise Edition
    and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition (SP1) - 10.0.2841.0 (X64)
The issue appears in the last months.
It's occurs only on specific machine (always the same client), in the same moment other machines can open the same input schedule and expand without problem.
I've noted also that when I cancel the added member the issue disappear, the same behaviour with APShell.
I have the same configuration on development and test environment, same version of O.S. and SQL server, but there I don't have problem. The only difference is that these two environments are single server (application and DB server on the same machine) Instead, the production environment is multiserver (2 application server + DB server).
Maybe there is a service that take a long time for sincronization (it's triggered in the night?).
Could you verify if on some machine the evdre works fine and and that when you delete the  added member evdre starts to work?
    Kind regards
    Roberto

  • Changing Ramp color in After Effects

    Hi all,
I'm still new to AE and currently using step by step guides from books to practice in AE. In one of my practice, I'm creating a text animation with a ramps shader as the background as seen in my attached file here, and according to the book, no matter initial your color choice from your color picker, the ramp color will eventually default to gradations of black and white as seen in my file here. I wonder if there's any way that I can have more control of my color here, so I'll choose the color of my ramp.
    Thanks.

Ok. Thanks for the uploading tip. I've enclosed the image as an attachment here for more clarification. hope it helps

Subject: Changing Ramp color in After Effects
When attaching images, use the camera icon or the pix will get caught up in the virus queue. As I'm writing this, it's not yet visible. Anyway, I'm not really sure what you are describing, since you didn't mention what book and chapter and even then it's probably a newer revision which I don't have. There's a million ways to create gradients in AE, so probably you are simply missing something obvious.
    - Ramp effect
    - Ramp effect, followed by Colorama
    - Layer Styles - Gradient Overlay
    - Shape Layers with gradient fills
For some specific cases, the effect may require to be applied to a solid, where the other layer, e.g. a text layer acts as the matte. also make sure to adjust the start and end points of the gradients to fall within the dimensions of the layer to be affected.

  • ACR color difference with PS CS4

I tried a search and can't find a thread about what I'm seeing, so I'm posting in the hopes that others may be seeing the same thing.
I have PS CS4 and ACR 5.3 (latest patches) on a Windows XP Pro computer.  I use Adobe RGB as my working space and profile my dual monitors with an Eye One Display2.  I recently started experimenting with using ACR to edit tif files, but I noticed that while the image is loaded in the ACR window it looks quite different color wise than the Bridge thumbnail or within CS4 (after opening it as a smart object).  The look in ACR is similar to what the same image looks like in CS4 with the ColorMatch profile assigned to the image (i.e. quite a bit brighter and lacking saturation).
    Here's the weird things:
When I first open the tif image, it looks correct as long as the exclaimation mark is present on the preview window.  Once the file is fully processed and that icon disappears the image color makes the dramatic change.  If I then make no changes and simply open the image in CS4, then it's back to the original "correct" colors.
If I zoom in the ACR preview to 50% or higher, then the color difference is negligible if not entirely gone, but I can't edit an 8000x5000 without seeing the entire image.
    Here's what I have tried:
    Turned off all OpenGL features
Verified my monitor profile was being recognized by CS4
Ensured my color settings didn't get changed (preserve profiles is on, as well as ask on mismatch)
Tested them with an image that was a known mismatch and it asked what I should do as expected
I tried PS CS3 and ACR 4.x with the same result
Stripped out XMP metadata with Exiftool to see if that may have been an issue - it wasn't
I'm hoping someone else has an idea what is causing this or if it's a known issue.  Any ideas or confirmation on what I'm seeing would be appreciated.

    cssadobe wrote:
It doesn't matter which space is set, the display of the image is always the same in ACR.
Holy cow!  If that's the case in your setup, you have a HUGE problem, Craig.
You should definitely see a big difference in the ACR preview when you set your ACR worflow options to ProPhoto RGB compared to either Adobe RGB or sRGB.  If you don't, either your monitor is not accurately calibrated and profiled, or it's a lousy narrow-gamut monitor, or your color management is broken.
EDIT:  It could be that the scan was not really made in ProPhoto RGB but was converted by the lab to that profile, in which case then, yes, you would see no difference because the true, original color space was and remains narrower and smaller than the lowest common denominator, which could well be anything, including Color Match or sRGB (and we all know what the s stands for in sRGB!).
    cssadobe wrote:
Since PS CS4 created the tiff, the preview and the actual image data should be identical in my opinion.  Would you agree with that? I don't know why PS would create a preview that was not identical in display characteristics to the actual image.
No, I would not agree with that.  No reasonable person can expect a low-resolution, JPEG-like preview embedded in the TIFF to look identical to the TIFF.  Information has to be discarded to generate the preview.  But that's beyond the scope of ACR.
What I would expect is that ACR would render a better display from the original data in the TIFF than what the mediocre embedded preview can generate.
    cssadobe wrote:
If I zoom in on the image in ACR to at least 50%, then the difference seems to disappear.
Well, duh!  You only see the real image when you view it at 100%.  The farther you get from 100%, the more information is either being discarded (at anything less than 100%)  or made up, invented at greater than 100%.  50% is still not as good as 100%, but it's definitely better than the miserably low 8.7% view you were using when you made that last screen shot.
Seeing that you have severe problems with your display, as suggested by the first paragraph in this post, there seems to be no point in discussing in detail any of the discrepancies you mention, most especially at any other view that is not actual pixels (100%).
I'll have to read the thread again when I have the time to see if you have said when you calibrated your monitor last and how, what your color settings are, what monitors you're running, etc.
I validate the calibration on my monitors practically on a daily basis with a hardware calibrator puck.
But, ultimately, viewing a large scan at a dismal 8.7% you can't make any of the judgments you are trying to make.

  • Editing HDR in Lightroom or stay in Photoshop? Color difference?

Once I merge files as HDR to photoshop from lightroom, I then set it to 32 bit. Then I can make all the edits in Adobe Camera Raw, after I hit save, it will then be in Lightroom as a .Tif file. But, what about if I merged to HDR in photoshop and didn't adjust anything with camera raw, and just hit save, then when I adjust it in lightroom, will it be the same? In other words, when I adjust it in Lightroom I know I'm adjusting a .tif file. Am I doing the same in photoshop or has it not became a .tif file yet?
Also, I noticed a massive color difference. I got the edit to look perfect in camera raw. I saved it, when I look at the lightroom version it doesn't look as clear, it looks like it has more saturation than I actually used, maybe even more clarity or sharpness as well. The colors aren't going together smoothly like on the camera raw version. What would I do to fix this?

My ACR 8.8 and LR5.7.1 HDR 32bit images look identical. This is probably due to your Camera Raw Preferences settings:
If set as above LR can't see your ACR settings. If set as below LR can see the ACR settings since they are saved in the TIFF metadata.
To see your LR settings in ACR you need to change your LR Catalog Settings. You can also set 'Automatically write changes into XMP, but I don't recommend that unless you also want to create XMP sidecars for all your raw file edits. You' can use CTRL +S key to save the LR Develop settings to the TIFF.

  • Mirror and Witness Connection in a Disconnected state immediately after adding Witness Server to Mirror session.

After adding the Witness Server to the Mirror session, the Witness Connection state between the Mirror and Witness Connection is Disconnected and the state between Principal and Witness Connection is Connected.
The procedures defined in Books Online was used to setup Database Mirroring...when the Witness server was added to the Mirror session, only the alter database T-SQL statement was executed on the Principal server.
    ALTER DATABASE <db_name> SET WITNESS = 'TCP://<servername>:<port>'
After executing the above statement, a few seconds later the state between Principal and Witness Connection changed to Connected and the state between Mirror and Witness Connection remains Disconnected.
The Mirror session is not using Certificates, every server is on the same domain, using the same domain login account, and all servers have SP2 installed running Enterprise Edition.
Any idea's why the state between Mirror and Witness Connection remains Disconnected?
    Thanks,

I have the same problem.  All 3 servers are on a workgroup and I'm using certificates. All three servers are connected via  switch.  This is a test environment, with the principal server being a 64 bit OS with Windows Server 2003 R2 with SQL Server standard x64, the witness server is a Windows server 2003 SP2 x32 with SQL Server Express, and the mirror is Windows XP x32 with Sql Server Standard. Using hard coded static IP addresses (FQDN makes no difference, and they get resolved to IP addresses anyway!).  The mirror server log shows
'The server instance Witness rejected configure request, read its error log file for more information
but of course there are no errors logged on the witness server - not by SQL, nor in the event log.  When the witness is set on the princial server, the Database mirroring monitor shows almost immediately that the witness and prinicapl servers are connected, but it takes quite a few seconds before the witness/mirror state is shown as disconnected.  Until then the entry is blank.  The monitor also shows High Saftey with automatic failover, which isn;t true - since the mirror and witness are not connected, no failover occurs when the principal is taken offline.
Since I'm running terminal services on the XP machine to interact with the witness and principal server, I find it hard to image that there are network issues.
If the witness can connect with the principal and the principal can conect with the mirror, under what circumstances will the witness NOT connect with the mirror?  When I check the witness server for entries in the database_mirroring_witness view the following is shown:
    RTJobs TCP://primary-sql:5022 TCP://192.168.100.14:5022 2 FULL 1 1 2263BD97-1004-4D73-9966-7AFB89E5626E A6EE18DF-19C4-48EC-8C06-77074EF5A275 0 1
Interestingly the IP address of the prinical server is replaced by the Sql Server instance name (primary-sql) but this doesn't happen for the witness.

  • How would you replace a solid color image with a gradient?

I am trying to figure out what I am even trying to ask, so I can search the appropriate terms, but basically I am trying to get the texture with the white background on the left to have the color replaced with the gradient on the right.  Seems simple, but I can't figure it out.

Hi  FloridaLegend, this is an adjustment layer grouped to the image (so you keep the original sourced image). This way you always have the original artwork you can go back to.
I added a b&w adjustment layer so you don't get the blue coming through, then I grouped to the layer (Ctrl+Alt+G) then added the blend to the layer above.
Here are some screenshots that should help:
