--Color differences in exports - Need to maintain color quality...

Here's the scoop...
I'm experiencing color differences and sharpness of text and graphics - basically everything in video --- from one export to another.
In this circumstance, I screen cast Powerpoint with Camtasia. I export the video in Camtasia with these settings:
Quicktime - TechSmith Ensharpen Codec.
I import into Premiere, do my edits...then export H.264 Format --- with custom settings that match Camtasia Exports - frame rate, resolution...etc...
Data Rate in Premiere - played around with diff settings...went initally with 3 min 4 mbps max --- then tested 5 min 6 max --- same results. I export them with Encoder.
Results =
- Quicktime - TechSmith Ensharpen Codec = darker, richer colors with enhanced sharpness
- H.264 from Premiere = lighter colors with more of a flat/less sharp look
I've compared in both Quicktime and VLC players
I've read that H.264 can produce color differences. I want an export that will maintain colors of Quicktime - TechSmith Ensharpen Codec at a data rate of around 1-2mbps. Have any suggestions?
Big Thanks

Jim, appreciate the insight.
Prior to posting, I forgot to mention I did adjust settings in GPU panel.
I've tested multiple computers now on various players (VLC, etc..), all with the same result --- the color difference exists on every computer. Final video's will be seen online, not a TV.
In light of this…what I've deducted is that - I still need to find an answer to my original question.
Is there an export that will maintain the quality and colors of Quicktime - TechSmith Ensharpen Codec at a data rate of around 1-2mbps?
Virtually none of the computers that people will be viewing these video's on are going to be color calibrated. It'd be comparable to the computers I've been testing on…
If I'm not seeing this clearly, then obviously let me know…I could be mistaken.
Thanks again

  • Color differences when exporting from Final Cut

I have a big problem when exporting from Final cut to any file format. The colors and contrast looks fine in Final cut and on my external monitor but when exporting to, for example, H.264 I get a file that is "washed out". Colors are bleak and the over all feel is not what I expect. The funny thing is that if I import the exported file into Final cut it looks fine. What am I doing wrong? Can anyone help me out with this?

QT brightens the image. Dunno why...perhaps so that it ensures that every monitor can see it?
    Here is an example:
But I don't know why that is.

  • Color differences between high and low res images in Illustrator pdfs

OK, I'm creating a tradeshow graphic for a client. I designed the whole thing in Illlustrator CS6. But for the proof, I used a low res image of the sky (before we purchased it). Everyone was happy. It was a low-res RGB image imported into Illustrator, then the whole thing was exported as a pdf.
Once they approved it, I purchased the high res image. RGB. Same image... just high res. I popped it into the Illustrator file and exported it in exactly the same way. But now, the image looks much more purple. The low res pdf showed it as much brighter, lighter blue.
My client prefers the lighter blue. When I look at the two images in Photoshop, they look the same (in terms of color).
So... should I be worred? Why is there such a color difference? Thanks!
I'm attaching jpgs of the pdfs just to show you the color differences.
    Julie

Print Graphics: File >> Document Color Mode CMYK.
Digital Graphics:  File >> Document Color Mode RGB.
The PDF presets in Illusttrator will generate CMYK PDFs or PDFs in the colorpsace Illustrator is set to, (except for smallest file size which makes RGB PDFs).
Firsst make sure you are in the correct colorspace in Illustrator before proceeding, adn make your imaeg CMYK if you are for example doing a banner for tradeshow. Backlit graphics are the only print graphics exception and should be RGB because Lambda printers actaully are native RGB.
Open your lo and hi res in Phoothsop and compare the color values by watching the info aplette in Photoshop.
When generating PDFs keep in minds that and RGB PDFs have different color than a CMYK PDF.

  • JPEG Export: I need browser-independant colors!

    Hello,
Let me explain my situation: I have a website where I publish my Illustrator documents as exported JPEG files. The website has a certain RGB-color background. And my illustrations have the same RGB-color background. Those two backgrounds have to match perfectly, in order to produce a nice effect. They do match in Firefox 14, but they don't match in Safari 6.
So, I need my exported JPEG files to have browser-independant colors. I read everything I found on the Internet on this topic, but it's just general stuff about Color profiles and the Edit > Colors... menu and color differences between browsers. NOT A SINGLE TUTORIAL on the whole Internet on how to produce browser-independant JPEG files using Adobe software.
Currently, I am exporting my Illustrator documents using an AppleScript, in order to save time:
      export docRef to file (myPath) as JPEG with options {quality:60, optimization:true, antialiasing:true, artboard clipping:true, saving as HTML:false}
but you don't have to give me an AppleScript necessarily. Just give step-by-step instructions on how to do this in Illustrator, and I will automate it myself. Thank you for reading, and I am hoping that you will have a solution!
P.S. I know that PNGs are browser-independant, but I would prefer JPEGs, because the size is smaller.

I created a 1px by 1px JPEG for the webpage background, and the colors still didn't match! I thought, maybe Safari 6 is being a smart-***, and is transforming my 1px by 1px JPEG into a solid color: so I created a 2px by 2px JPEG, and I added a small pattern. The colors still didn't match! At this point, I started suspecting it's a bug, since my website displays fine in Safari 5. My illustrations are shown using the CSS code "background: url(...jpg) no-repeat" so I searched for a possible bug in Safari 6 involving backgrounds. I found ONLY ONE PAGE on the whole Internet describing the bug:
[Pro] Dramatic colour shift with Safari 6 on Mountain Lion
    http://freewaytalk.net/thread/view/114471
The page says "Exactly the same image changes color depending on whether it’s repeating or not". So I tried replacing "background: url(...jpg) no-repeat" with "repeat", "repeat-x", "repeat-y" and sure enough, the colors match when the background is repeated. To summarize, in Safari 6, there is an obscur bug involving the "background-repeat" property: when this property is set to "no-repeat", a color shift occurs in the image. It has nothing to do with Illustrator or JPEG format.
Sorry to have wasted your time!

  • Exporting RAW into JPEG, color differences

I've done a lot of searching in these forums and I can't find a solution to my problem. I just spent 30+ hours editing a set of 123 wedding photos in RAW file format. When I export to JPEG, the colors change on just about every photo. I understand that if I would have correctly set up the camer calibration prior to editing, this would have possibly solved my problem. However, the photos are already edited. When I export the files in TIFF, they look fine. It's just the JPEG file format that changes the look of my images.  I'm using Lightroom 2.3. My last brainstorm involved importing the already edited TIFF files and then trying to export those into JPEG, the color format was still off. Can anyone Help?

What program do you use to look at the jpegs?
    Is your screen calibrated?
    What OS are you using?

  • Lr vs CS3 color difference rendering on-screen

I edited an image in Lr1.1 and saved the metadata to file. When I view the same image in PS CS3/ACR there is a color difference. Skin tones are different. [Note: I have ProPhoto as the default CS3 RGB color space].
    But wait... there's more.
Now when I export the image in Lr 1.1 (set to ProPhoto), that exported image when now imported and viewed in Lr 1.1 or PS CS3 look identical, and identical to the source/metadata file viewed in CS3.
What I see is that Lr1.1 metadata driven rendition is different from the same operation mechanized by PS CS3/ACR. The latter is identical to an export of the same data (to JPG/TIFF) by Lr 1.1.
    What's going on?
    System: Mac Pro - OS X 10.4.10

I'm not supposed to be monitoring this stuff right now since I'm on vacation, but the set of people who can reel off all of the possibilities is limited...
Lightroom uses perceptual rendering when drawing to the screen and hence if you actually have a monitor profile that exploits this, it will look different from Photoshop which always uses relative colorimetric plus the relatively hokey optional gamut compression.
If you are viewing images in any module other than Develop, then you need to be aware that the preview cache is generally stored in AdobeRGB (unless you turn the quality up to high) which means that colors outside the AdobeRGB gamut can get clipped to AdobeRGB before being clipped/mapped to the display which will generally result in different appearance than simply clipping/mapping ProPhotoRGB to the display. But this should only affect colors outside the AdobeRGB gamut.
Older versions of Photoshop had a less accurate conversion path for display for speed reasons. I don't know whether this has been fixed in CS3.
As for white balance settings transfer, Camera Raw applies more aggressive rounding to the values it edits and displays than does Lightroom.

  • Big Color Shift between exported H264 mp4 and Program Monitor

I get a big Color Shift between exported H264 mp4 on Vimeo/Youtube and Quicktime X and Program Monitor.
There are quite a few posts on Quicktime gamma issues, but there seem to be no solutions and the other editors I know don't seem to have this problem.
I know there will be a bit of a shift but this is MASSIVE. At the moment I add a whole extra adjustment layer to all my clips to get it approximately right, but ofcourse this does not solve the issue nor does it give proper results.
Please do not reply with the "You need a real reference monitor via SDI etc etc ..."
By my logic on the same screen the program monitor should resemble what is going to be the final result in a relevant player like Quicktime X which all normal apple consumers use to watch their films.  I know VLC and Mpeg streamclip gives different results, but mostly when playing Quicktime/h264 files Quicktime will play it thus average users ( the people I'd like to downwload/buy my films )will watch it in Quicktime.
Furthermore, Quicktime X's gamma/color looks very similar to the image I get on Youtube or Vimeo - which is where all my current work is going. I'm not outputting to boradcast or DVD etc.
Strangely enough the MPEG 2 stuff I've done for DVD matches the Youtube output with the Program monitor.
    What am I doing wrong?
I have a Dell 2711 wide Gamut Display which is calibrated with an SPyder 3 Elite using its full colour gamut ( close to 90% of Adobe RGB - thus bigger than sRGB or Rec709) Could Premiere be ignoring the calibration in the Program monitor and making the image values 16-235 and then Quicktime uses all  values 0-255? If so, how can I fix this?
Any help will be much appreciated!

I know this has been a while so hopefully you found some help by now, but maybe this will help anyone stumbling across this.
What people seem to be missing in what you are asking is... this is the same file, on the same monitor, but with a different appearance in different software.  It is not a question of whether the overall monitoring is GOOD, and it is not a matter of hardware settings (as that would most likely propogate across all software) it is that it is not CONSISTENT side by side on the very same monitor.
I had very similar issues that really seemed to get worse when we got new monitors, which is what lead me to chime in here.  The monitors were also wide gamut displays.
    The problem is likely this...
    1. The difference being shown are the difference between software that properly color manages (i.e. Premier or After Effects) and software that does not (i.e. Quicktime or some web browsers)
    2. The reason it is so severe is that the wide gamut monitors are able to show many more colors and thus the difference between the managed and unmanaged software is much more exagerrated than on regular gamut monitors.
I found this great link that helped calm my nerves and helped me get handle on much of what is going on.
    http://www.artstorm.net/journal/2009/07/color-management-wide-gamut-dell-2408/
Now that is not to say that the 0-255/16-235 issue is not also involved here.  It is definitely possible that a specific codec or compressor is part of the problem, but it sounds like it starts with the color management issue first.
    I hope this helps.

  • Color Difference with Indesign versions

Has anyone experienced any color difference breakdowns between CS3 and CS4? We just noticed it with a file that we created within CS4 and saved out to CS3.inx that the colors shift. We checked the color settings and both programs are set with the same working space profiles. Any other suggestions what would cause this? The colors were not built with Pantone colors therefore should eliminate the Pantone library

The Color Settings’ Working Spaces don't necessarily color manage the document—if there's a profile assigned to the CS3 document, that profile takes precedent over the Working CMYK Space. So, you have to check the document's assigned CMYK space (Edit>Assign Profiles...), if that is something other than GRACol2006_Coated1v2 you would expect to get a conversion when you open the file in CS4 with the Color Settings you are using.
If you don't want CMYK color conversions when you open the file, either remove the assigned profile (Edit>Assign Profiles...Discard (Use Current Working Space)) before opening in CS4, or stop using Convert to Working Space as your CMYK Policy. Convert to Working Space is rarely an appropriate policy—unless you routinely need to repurpose jobs for new printing conditions—even then it's not a great idea because it's easier to make the conversion when you export to PDF or print.

  • Indexed color / differences in dimension

    Hi!
Is there anybody, who can explain to me, how and why an indexed color in PDF is generated? There is following entry in my file, that is originally saved in RGB:
    15 0 obj
    [/Indexed/DeviceRGB 2 18 0 R]
    endobj
And why is it not possible to color manage indexed colors?
Furthermore there are differences in the dimension of objects in the PDF after the export out of InDesign. The differences are minimal, but I don`t understand, why there are any differences. My objects in InDesign are 50pt to 50pt. And in the PDF they are 50,004pt ...-what happened?
    Thank your for some ideas!
    Simone

with regard to color managing Indexed color - I can't see a reason why that should not be possible. At least callas software's pdfColorConvert simply does color conversions for Indexed color as well...
Whether Indexed color is used (as opposed to specifying color values directly) is up to the software writing the PDF. Most often Indexed color is found for images where only 256 or less different colors need to be addressed (like in duotone images). I have nevertheless seen use of Indexed color for grayscale (where it does not make a lot of sense as there would be max. 256 different gray values anyway, at least for 8 bit color) and even for bitmap images, and also for vector objects (where again Indexed color does not add any value). On the other hand - Indexed color does not do any harm (besides using a few unnecessary bytes).

  • How to get right color output whit export.

    Hello,
Does anyone know how to get the same color/gamma output with export as in the original footage ?
I noticed that when exporting a clip in h.264 or mp4 or quicktime h.264 or mp4, the colors get messed up, or the gamma I don't know really. You can try it yourself.
Here's a link to a testscreen image in png format:
    http://joeljohnson.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/bbc-hd-test-card.png
I use the standard "digital color measurement tool" app, provided with mac OS X to check what happens with the colors.
The white, grey and black boxes in the left of the picture should be, Black 0%, Grey 20%, grey 40%, Grey 60%, Grey 80% and whie(100%). The red colorblocks inthe picture contain about 2,7% blue and 85% red.
Whenever I import this file in Imovie, the grey scale colors are already a bit changed. About 2% or 4%.
But what bothers me most is that the red blocks contain about 7% blue, 3 times as much as it supposed to contain.
On export the color difference maintain when viewed in quicktime. When viewed in VLC, the grey boxes are displayed as meant to be, 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100%. So this is probably the well known and discussed gamma shift. BUT the red boxes contain about 7% blue, even when viewed in VLC, why!!!! I can't live with that, I have a red car, but when viewed on video on my computer...it has a blue cast, it's not red, it gets slightly purple. Does anyone know how to solve this problem, and by the way, the other colors in the testscreen image are also shifted on import and export. It keeps me awake at night...Help me please.

  • Need help with color management

I am looking for someone to help me.  Please!
I am looking for help with Photoshop/printer not printing correct colors.
I have: Windows 7, Photoshop CS5, Photoshop Elements, HP Pavillion Laptop, new Okidata C530dn color laser printer
Previously I had a Canon Pixma MP620 and a gentleman from another forum gave me the correct settings for printing on photo paper and colors were perfect.  I now have a OKIdata C530dn color laser and have started a business printing business cards and greeting cards, etc., and I do advertisements on a freelance basis.
I will be working a lot with cardstock or cover stock 65-110 lbs paper.  I have an old OKIdata 2024e at work, and the colors are much better with that printer than my new personal one.  I have tried matching the settings of that printer to mine to no avail.  I have finally gotten the color close, but not quite.  When I print on my Canon injet the colors match and print perfectly.
I have tried every setting variation that I can think of to get the color correct with my new OKIdata.  I have to get the colors correct or my new business will go under because I can't match colors for my customers.  I am a self taught Photoshoper and a novice so please bear with me.
Using Okidata PCL.  Also have PS

I have gotten the color close, but colors are dull. I have tried an adjustment layer and setting the saturation higher, but that doesn't help.  I know my laptop is showing the right colors, (calibrated) because I am still printing to the Canon with cardstock and the colors are perfect using the same settings above.
Tried printing in PSE and it gave me an error that it was not a post script printer.  Installed ps driver, still getting errors and it wouldn't print.
I would appreciate any help you could give me before I run out of toner and have to buy the expensive toners, or just slit my wrists j/k  LOL
    Thanks!  JS

You need an ICC profile for your printer.  Chromix has an excellent service at http://www2.chromix.com/colorvalet/ which will do this calibration for you.  You download some software they provide, then print a test file on the exact same paper you are using for your cards.  Then send the output to them and they will calibrate the colors with their equipment and send you the ICC profile file.  Once you have it, you'll be able to print accurate colors.
There are other services out there that may cost less, but I do not know how reputable they are.  Chromix is a good business I've worked with many times.
If you are trying to run a business and you don't understand color management yet, you may be in for a lot of trouble.  Please get the book "Real World Color Management" available at http://www.colorremedies.com/realworldcolor/ and it will save you a ton of money and headaches.

  • Lightroom 1.2 and PS3 color differences.

I am using LR 1.2 and PS3 for external editing. Once the file is opened in PS the color is different from LR. After the editing and saving the file in PS, edited file, again, look different in LR. In fact, if I open file in PS and close it without any editing, the copy created in LR look different already.
I do regular calibration of my monitor (DiamondPro 2070) with EyeOne and use sRGB color space.
How to get identical colors in both applications?

I spent some time trying different combinations with PS, LR and Preview.
It looks like color variations have a lot to do with my editing using Topaz PS plug-in. I do heavy editing with Psycadelic preset  (http://levakhsanov.net/p193873551), then increase image size in PS, save in LR, tweak some more colors in LR and Export to the disk (Preview). As a result size of the file became 57MB (from original 4MB). Thanks to you, colors in PS and LR look consistent enough even with Topaz  editing (as long as I do not do one more round with edited file, LR>PS>LR), but Preview colors are much more saturated. And really wierd thing is that some pictures look different in Library and Development modes in LR!  With light editing without Topaz colors are the same in all 3 softwares.
I am not concerned that much with colors in Preview, but I am just woundering what colors I will see on a hard copy. Easiest way is to order small print and see, but MPIX have 25% limited time sale on big prints and there is no time for turnaround. I guess I need to make some sucrifices
Thank you very much for your help.

  • I need to synchronize color space between Bridge and PSCS3

    Hi--
The only CS3 programs I am running are Bridge and PS. I like to work in Adobe RGB and maintain all my files in that color space. Consequently, I set that color space in PSCS3 (in
Edit/Color Settings). However, for some reason I can't nail down, PS often seems to lose my preference and reverts to sRGB; when I re-set my working space to Adobe RGB, I am informed
"Unsynchronized: Your Creative Suite applications are not synchronized for consistent color." I can't find the place where I can tell Bridge to use Adobe RGB color space. How can I resolve this?
    Thanks,
    --Ken

I am having the same issue. It is frustrating because I am following a Lynda.com training video that talks about PS CS3 and Bridge basics. Included in that video is how to synchronize color between these two applications. Nowhere does it say that one needs to own a >$1000 full suite to be able to do this. Deke directs the viewer to the Edit menu of Bridge where you are supposed to enter the "creative suite color settings" menu. No such menu exists on my "el cheapo" version of Bridge CS3.

  • 2009 MBP: Color difference between integrated VS dedicated?

I took two screen-shots of the desktop with two exact backgrounds, also the same color calibration settings for both. It turns out that running the dedicated card shows colors more vividly than the integrated graphics. Anyone else notice this?

No, what I did was I went into OS X under each card, integrated and dedicated, then use Grab to take a fullscreen image of it. Then I viewed both images both in integrated and dedicated. I also exported those images to my Mac Pro. I use a gateway and a samsung monitor, both showing the same result, the dedicated card keeps the original colors while the integrated card makes the color more washed out.
One of the image I tested with was this: http://interfacelift.com/wallpaperbeta/details/1894/tuliprace.html
If anyone else have a recent MBP with dual video GPU, I'd like to see your results using the same test.
I just uploaded the two shots, here they are. Again in both GPU, I use the same color calibration, the only change I made from the default is I increased the gamma to 2.2 instead of 1.8. Each picture are approx 2.2MB if you choose to download it.
    http://img193.imageshack.us/i/test1dedicatedcalibrate.tif/
    http://img193.imageshack.us/i/test2integratedcalibrat.tif/
Also even using the default color settings, the dedicated card still shows the original color vs the integrated.
Maybe not all GPU are not the same... or somebody needs to make a firmware update.

  • Color differences between these two files?

Could someone please tell me the color differences between these two files? What are the differences in general of these two files and how do I make a file identical to the blue cancel button?
I am working with signature pads and the BLUE CANCEL image works, but the other GREEN image does not. Both are 8-bit .bmp files... HELP!

#1, obviously, would be to connect a mic that doesn't require phantom power.
And #2 comes with a 6 ft. USB cable, so you may not need a bunch more cables. Maybe just one standard XLR to connect a mic to it.
