Color dithering on 20" iMac

Can someone inform me more on this color dithering issue with the 20" iMac.
Ever since I bought my early 2008 iMac it appears that hte colors are more washed out then my older 2006 iMac. After some searching online I find that the color rendering on the 20" iMac is dithered compared to the 24". From those complaints it does sound like the problem I am experiencing. Has anyone talked to Apple support about this issue and I gather this cannot be solved by software because Apple used a cheaper LCD screen in the 20". I would like to know if anything can be done to improve this issue (except for selling on eBay). I am certainly disappointed that Apple choose to downgrade the monitor just to keep prices down.

I have tried that, even tried some custom calabrated profiles. I see a slight improvement but nothing to brag about. I guess what weighs on my mind is Apple implies that their hardware is better then anyone elses. I have felt in the past Apple is making the best hardware choices for the money. Now I am second guessing that. Especially since the MAcBooks and Macbook Pro's had similar issues not too long ago. I do not understand why would Apple skimp.
I will go back and try some more things with calabrating.

What is the resolution of the picture that you are trying to print?
Go to Image>resize>image size, read the resolution in px/in, then report back, please.
Also, are you in a position to try printing with another printer in an attempt to narrow this down?

  • I can't calibrate any color profile for my iMac's display!

I think I accidentally deleted the color profile for my iMac's display
and now it won't let me calibrate any profile! All the colors are bright and washed out.
When I go to the display>color preference panel I get an error sound whenever I click ANY color profile, and it doesn't load. When I click "calibrate" it gives me the message: "Can not calibrate the display. The factory profile for the display could not be found."
But I wasn't even using the factory profile, and it won't let me choose any other ones, either (though a whole list does show up!)
I tried repairing/verifying the profiles in the ColorSync Utility, but it didn't help.
Is there somewhere I can download the profile and install it? I'm running a white 20" Core Duo 2GHz iMac (summer of 2006), if that helps.
    Thanks!

    seenew,
I'm wondering if you would have any luck with resetting the PRAM? PRAM settings hold some of the display preferences I believe.
See: "Mac OS X: What's stored in PRAM"
If not, I am wondering if reapplying the Combo update for 10.4.7 might correct the display calibration issue or at least return it to the default?
I don't think that recreating the .plist file for displays will help.
As far as I know you cannot "download" the profile.
sorry if those suggestions don't help,

Can any one recommend a basic color printer for my IMac Intel OS X 10.4.11?

Try downloading the software from here after deleting what you've already installed from /Library/Printers/hp:

  • Color calibrating 27 inch iMac display

    A few months, ago I purchased a used 2009 27 inch iMac.
After a lengthy move and recnt medical isues, I am back t work doing some design work.
I need to color calibrate my this iMAc 27 inch screen and use Monaco Easy Color with screen colorimeter.
I used this on my old G4 system that used a matte screen instead of a glossy screen like on this iMac.
I need to know what lighting conditions and how to setup my iMac's screen to use/setup to get the colorimeter device and software to accurately color calibrate my iMac's screen.
I am do my design work using Adobe CS3, Painter 11, Blender and to do some technical drawing work using a CAD program for the Mac.
I am, preferably, looking for answers from people experienced with using monitor calibration software and specifically using the Monaco Optix hardware and software to create a profile.
Help is greatly apprecated and any useful links helpful.
Thanks to everyone who responds in advance.

I just bought a 27 inch Imac a few hours ago.
If it were me, for a brand new hours-old machine, I would demand (not ask) for a replacment (not fixed) from wherever you bought it from.  For the prices of these things I wouldn't tolerate that.
In the meantime try smc and pram reset and see what happens.

  • Color Correction on a iMac 27"

I have a 27" iMac running Final Cut Studio 7, with a 30" Sony Bravia TV connected as an additional monitor. What is the best way to observe clips for color correction? I output to BluRay and the web? I am told that in/out devices such a Matrox MXO2 are not iMac compatible .
    Thanks and Happy Holidays

The original Matrox MXO is your only option.

  • Color/Display setting 17" iMac

I am not at the Mac at this time so I forget some steps.
The colors on the monitor were tending to be dark and the display of a spec'd PMS color definitely did not match, so I went into System Preferences, chose "Display" and then chose the color settings option. I clicked the option for advanced color settings. WHY did I do this? Duh!
After I went through all the "iMac" color settings, I saved the new calibrations. Somewhere along the line I came to screen display size (?). I clicked 1024 x 840 (like I said, I'm not at the iMac right now) or something close. WOW! I got everything BIG. It filled the screen all right! This was not what I wanted...I wanted to go back to the regular look. I returned to the Display, chose a lower size screen setting and the display was smaller than the area I have available.
I kept the larger setting because I don't know what else to do. When I read emails, the display is so large that my messages are down in the lower right off the screen.
All the icons on my desktop are wierd as well. The menu items are huge. Everything is huge. There was no "middle-size" setting for display. Where do I find Default settings? I've tried everything.

Use a hardware calibrator and while you're waiting for it to arrive, calibrate using the built in calibration in the system preferences for the display. Make sure you turn on the advanced options when you hit calibrate and calibrate to gamma 2.2 and a 6500K white point. These are not Apple's defaults but are essential. If you do at least that you'll get very good correspondence between print and monitor. A hardware calibrator will get you there absolutely. NEVER choose a working space profile such as adobeRGB or sRGB as your monitor profile. Monitors almost never correspond precisely to either of these and on a Mac, there is no excuse to not use at least the free built-in calibration. Apple's monitors (which you are using if it allows ColorLCD) are never near adobeRGB, they are usually closer to sRGB.

  • ICal colors on my Intel iMac

I bought a new iMac a few months ago. I am running Tiger.
Since i bought the iMac, i have been having periodic trouble with the colors in iCal. Every so often, i will open iCal (or another application will open it for me) and it will be completely blank. No Calendars. No events.
If i quit iCal and relaunch it, the calendars show back up with apparently no ill affects, other than that the colors all revert to what i assume is default. I then have to go back and customize the colors for the calendars again.
This happens about once every few weeks and is starting to become quite a nuisance.
Just as a side note, i also have a PowerBook G4 running Tiger on which this has never happened in over four years. The Calendars i am using i imported from my PowerBook.
Is this an intel problem, or something else?

    Do you mean iTunes 10.7?

  • HT1040 What color profile on my iMac is best to used when ordering prints from Apple?

I am accustom to printing my photographs.  After two disappointing HP B9180 printers, and way too much money in ink and paper, I am considering producing my prints primarily by ordering them through Apple Print Services.
This being said, what color profile should I use on my iMac to best match the color profile used by Apple Print Services?  Secondly, do I lose anything by editing my photos in PhotoShop, importing into iPhoto, and ordering through Apple?
    Thank you for any insight.

This might be of help to you:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.  3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 9 the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
NOTE: If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window".  That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu).  This way you get the best of both worlds.

  • Color calibration on new iMac

    Hi,
I am aware that the new (late 2012) iMacs are color calibrated on assembly.  There is some question as to whether or not they can be re-calibrated after you purchase them.
Is anyone aware if they can be re-calibrated?
    Thanks

    Thanks for the answer.
What was worrisome to me was in the post below. In the section labled "The Potential Deal Breakers"
    http://cdtobie.wordpress.com/2012/10/29/the-new-apple-imac-may-be-your-next-imag ing-workstation/
Here the writer mentions that the factory calibration is written into the graphics firmware never to be changed again.
Can i presume this is just not true?
For a professional photographer not to be able to re-calibrate their screen would be a nightmare.
    Thanks again

  • Vertical Color Lines in Monitor IMAC

Hi: I love macs but i have a problem with my IMAC:
A week ago i saw the first vertical line in monitor (yellow). Two day later i appear one more (purple), and today , when i turn on the mac, have another !!!!
Whats that? Its a problem with IMAC???
I friend told me that IMAC are bad and its not in guarantee!!!!
I want to buy another but if they are damish later that 18 months, i dont want to waste my money!
    Please help!

    Hello guys,
I hope my message can help you all fix your screen problem. I'm a mac lover and felt irritated when I saw all those vertical color lines appeared on my iMac screen, especially if the problem occurred not because of reckless usage but because of some production flaw, in one of Apple's outsource manufacturer, in Shanghai (I read somewhere). At that time my LCD screen had 18 lines in total!!!
Let me tell you my experience...
I called Apple Care support, because I live in Singapore I called local support, and told them about my problem. Then the guy asked me a few questions like what is my iMac serial number, my particulars, when did I buy iMac, what is my problem and so on. I said does Apple has a special warranty for this problem because I read in a forum I can get it fix for free.
Then, the guy told me he will call me back to see whether I am eligible for this warranty. Not long after that, the guy called me and told me a good news that I am eligible for this special warranty and can fix my LCD screen for free. Then the next day, I brought my iMac to a local Apple Repair Center. Three days later they called me and I picked up my iMac with new LCD screen without paying anything. That was so awesome I thought, the apple care support handled the problem nicely, the repair center staffs were very friendly, and above all that I get a BRAND NEW LCD screen for FREE!!!
I hope you guys who have the same problem with me can try to call Apple Care Support, eventhough your Mac's 1-year warranty has expired and you didn't buy an Apple extended warranty. This is a special case for Apple, you remember upthere when I mentioned about manufacturing defect.
Just for your information, I bought my iMac in early Dec 2005 and I called Apple Care in June 2008, so I have used it for almost three years this december. Maybe if your iMac still less then three years after you bought it this special warranty is still eligible for you, but for you who has more-than-3-year-old iMac you can try too. Another information is my iMac is third generation iMac with iSight, 17" screen, 1.9Ghz processor. So anyone who ever said that this warranty only valid for first generation iMac, this is not true.
Ok, lastly I hope you guys can fix this problem soon and be glad with your BRAND NEW LCD screen, free from Apple.
Hope this helps. God bless you all!

  • What to do about vertical color lines on Intel iMac?

I have an early intel iMac (2006). A few months ago a yellow vertical line appeared on screen. Now there are 5, all different colors. Is this a sign of impending doom?

It sounds like your graphics card, which is attached to the logic board, may be failing.  You may want to run it into an Apple Store for a Genius's opinion.
    Hope this helps

  • Color calibration on 20" iMac G5

Hello. I recently began to notice that certain programs or graphics on screen would would have a sort of "off" color to them. This would affect all of the dashboard widgets. I tried deleting the dashboard preferences and all of the widgets and basically resetting dashboard, but that didn't do anything. It almost looked like the color was much weaker than it should be, less saturated, sort of with a thin veil of white over everything that was affected. When I created a new user on the system, the problem was non-existent. I have previously had the Logic Board and Power Supply replaced. I was also recently having hard drive problems, so figured that when I got the drive replaced, I would have to reformat, and that should solve the problem. But I just got it fixed yesterday, and as I'm setting it up again and installing software, I'm seeing the exact same problem, but now it's affecting more things in the system. I'm now seeing it on some of my desktop backgrounds, some websites, and Adobe Illustrator CS2. A new user account now no longer fixes the problem, I still see the same thing. It's now gone from being an annoying quirk to being a serious problem, since I need the work I do in Illustrator to be color accurate, and it's nowhere near. This is not an issue with my display calibration (When I change it to default, the problem still persists). When I take a screenshot of an app that's affected and view it on another computer, it looks totally normal. Please help, this is extremely irritating!

It's not a drive problem, it's a screen problem, it may mean that your screen is failng - I would call Apple and see what they have to say,
    please post back,
    Miriam

  • 24" iMac - How many colors?

The specs. for the 24" iMac display state simply "millions of colors." At the same time the specs. for, for example, a 23" cinema display state very specifically "16.7 million colors" (which I believe would be 24 bit color). So my question is, specifically, how many colors will the 24" iMac display really produce?

    Magnitude15 wrote:
Do you know (or does anyone else know) how to tell if a monitor uses the 8-bit S-IPS panels?
Is there a label on the monitor or is there a software test available to determine this?
    There are several possibilities:
    1) tftcentral.co.uk has an extensive database that lists LCD panel part numbers
for many popular monitors. They also have a listing of panel specs -- sorted by
    manufacturer's part number.
    2) The monitor's "viewing angle" specs are a strong clue. 160 degrees or less is
    a fairly sure sign of a TN panel. 178 degrees generally indicates an S-IPS panel;
panels in the 170-175 degree range are likely to be S-PVA or a similar type of
high-quality panel. If it's not TN, it's almost certainly an 8-bit panel.
    3) For iMacs, you can download a copy of SwitchResX.app and interrogate the
panel type with "Export DDC." The last few lines of the DDC information block
indicate the manufacturer's part number of the panel -- and with that, you can
    find the specs on tftcentral.co.uk.
    4) Google. Online reviews by Xbitlabs.com, tomshardware.com, tftcentral.co.uk,
etc. often reveal the panel type.
