Color "Forgets" primary grades

I am grading 1 min TV commercials. I go along the timeline, grading each shot with primaries.
After I had finished the timeline, saved and quit, I re-opened the project a bit later and primaries on several of the clips had disappeared. There was no particular order or pattern as to which clips loose their primary grade, it's just random.
This problem has happened with several different projects, too. It's not just a one off thing.
Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone have a solution?

Had the problem? No. I have had COLOR swap grades among clips, but not completely disappear.

  • Adding a LOOK in SG breaks Primary Grade

I'm using SG with the Directlink from PP.  I can grade in SG and return to PP. I can add Secondary grades and Cutom Looks with no problem. If I try to add a LOOK as a secondary or extra Primary it breaks my original Primary Grade.  If I delete the  new LOOK or don't accept the Preview, I still can't get back to the Grade I had already saved. I have to go back to the ungraded clip.  Example - Bring in Canon Log clip directly from Premiere Pro.  Adjust Offset, Gain and Highlights to where I want it.  Add secondary to skin tone. Add Secondary to background.  Good to go and it will return to PP as graded.  But if I try to add a LOOK in SG after the Primary and Secondary it just breaks. No revovery.  No undo. No delete.  Just the original  pre-graded clip. Any ideas or is this a Bug?

    Hi,
The new look will delete all you layers and then apply the new Look, it's better if you apply looks on adjusment layers.
But if you don't accept it, it should get back to the point where it was. Is that your case? Even if you accept the Look, Undo Action should bring back your grading.
    Thanks,
    Fran

  • Wish: A color picker for the grad filter

When I use color for the grad filter, I often wish I could pick the color from my image. It is "fiddly stuff" to get the color right with the color panel as it is now.
It would be great to have a color picker that takes the color from a chosen spot in the image.

  • NEWBIE-Using Mighty Mouse scroll wheel to control Color's SMH wheels

Hi, new here & new to Color, working thru Ripples iTunes Color tutorials right now. Loving Color so far. I hope to be back with less rudimentary questions one day but here's the 1st:
Lacking a dedicated hardware interface, I'd hoped the Might Mouse scroll wheel would drive the shadow midtone and hilight wheels. I've tried various permutations in system prefs but no dice. Have I missed something? Thank you.

nadsta, I've found using a ShuttlePRO2 unit very handy. It's cheap, and I can map whatever shortcut I want, and then I use a Wacom tablet for the color wheel adjustments.
I've mapped the ShuttlePRO to jump between grade 1-4, and the different rooms I use the most (primary in/out, secondaries, color fx), turning grade on/off, set/delete keyframes and adjust keyframe type, two buttons for ALT/OPT and SHIFT modifiers which comes in very handy for selecting and adding to a color selection (in secondaries for instance) or holding ALT while click-and-drag in the color wheels and different parameters around the interface.
It's not perfect, but I can at least do some things in less time than I would using the keyboard.

  • Bug between Color 1.5 and REDCODE : clipping highlights the wrong way.

We encountered a problem during our tests for color grading with Apple Color 1.5.
I already posted about this bug about month ago, when Color 1.5 was released, but I had no answers, and as the bug prevents me from using this software, I'll ask the question again.
Here is the configuration we are using :
    MacPro
    AJA KONA3
    REDROCKET + Installer v1.07 + RocketCineX 661
    ATI RADEON HD 3870
    Final Cut 7.0
    Color 1.5
    External Waveform Monitoring OmniTek
RED Final cut studio 3 installer : v20.00
    Redcode quicktime v3.8.0
We have noticed that in Color, when we grade R3D files (transcoded with Final Cut 7 into Native, then in FCP in a REDCODE sequence), we have a problem with the signal on our external waveform monitoring (as well as on the internal Color's waveform).
When the Red metadatas are activated (RED menu in Primary), the signal clips at 95% in highlights. I tried to push the highlights really high, and the signal never goes over 95%, even if the frame is totally white.
When I disable the metadatas and grade the raw RedCode, the signal reacts normally and clips at 100%.
This actually happens even if I disable the inside Color clipper/and or force RGB in Color.
We tested with differents RED footages and it's always the same. I also tried to load other digital files, like F35 and D21, but there everything is normal. They clip at 100%.
As I never encountered this problem with the previous Color version, I wonder if it comes from the new sofware or from the new Red codecs, or if you have already heard of such a problem.
    Thank you for any clarifications.

I'm sure you have tried this - but just to make sure - have you set the broadcast safe tab to off? Or - alternatively - have you tried it with the broadcast safe setting on and bumping the IRE up to max (110)?
Also - have you updated your Kona3 drivers to the new 6.5?
Also, what import profile are you using for the red footage (Log and Transfer>Little Gear icon middle top > RED FCP Log and Transfer Plugin.
I build a base grade in REDRUSHES and save the .RSX file at the root of the media that I will be importing, then select that one. Seems to bypass a bunch of small problems for me and get me grading in the right direction faster. Also have done pregrades on set with DPs using that method and then graded close to the imported footage. Works very well...
God luck - would love to hear how you solve this problem!

  • Color Balance Wheel trackball control

I just got a kensington pro track ball and am trying to configure the 1st 3 buttons to work in conjunction with the 3 color balance wheels - I cant get anything to happen. Ive assigned the three keyboard commands to alt command F1 to 3 but they dont seem to have any effect - has anyone suceeded in getting these to work?
Are there any color correction control surfaces for FCP (I know about color finesse and Final Touch but they are a bit slow and clunky at the mo.......especially on a 50 min project with client attending the grade!) Is there a control surface that works Within FCP?

  • Color Resolution Presets and Final Cut fullscreen playback of 2.35:1

I have sent a project from Final Cut Pro to Color. In Color's resolution settings, I have selected the 2k 2.35 setting to achieve a wider image. Once I finish Coloring and rendering and I send the Color project back to Final Cut Pro, the aspect ratio is a perfect 2.35:1 wide image.
HOWEVER, when I use the Digital Cinema Desktop preview playback function (basically full-screen playback), Final Cut plays my footage back at 2.35:1, but stretched to fit 16:9. This is what it looks like in full-screen: http://gallery.me.com/amirij#100115/Screen-20shot-202009-09-04-20at-203-58-52-20 PM&bgcolor=black
Why is it doing this and how can I fix it? I assume it's a setting, but can't find it...
    Thanks in advance:

    1) Color correction, especially when done with separate application from the NLE, should be done AFTER picture lock. There are some measures if there are tweaks after, but they aren't 100%. Always wait to color correct until after you have picture lock. But you can render out of Color, media with handles, so you can do minor tweaks. And if you add new shots, make those into separate projects, send them to Color, grade, and send back.
    2) You need to either read the manual, or look for a tutorial on Color. It goes through all the steps. Send to Color...grade in Color...render...then SEND TO FCP. That'll send a new sequence to FCP.  Not a rendered out QT file...the full sequence.

  • Un-smooth color gradient

I'm a new mac user, and had used the macbook pro 2.4G with LED backlight for one more month. I find the color gradient is not smooth in second primary color to primary color. Please check the PNG files as bellow links.

In those patterns you will find many vertical lines. Those will make you see some photos with contour or noise by Macbook Pro. I have double check many other PC notebooks. They don't have this issue. It is hard to believe the high-end notebook has such kind of color performance. The color performance is too poor to use the "Pro" title. I feel so disappointed to spend a huge amount of money on the Macbook pro( Poor?).

    Mylenium,
thank you for the answer. But unforunately I'm a newby. Could you go into more details please ?
    Mark
    PS:
The problem I always got with the gradient tool is the following
The gradient starts at a certain point and uses a hard coded distance (e.g. 50 pixels from this point to this direction like a vector)
This makes it impossible to change the geometry with the full gradient
For example :Filling this rectangle with a gradient and I’m defining a vector mask to it
Afterwards I changed the vector mask to this
The gradient is cut instead of changing, compressing it.
Is there no way to define a starting point (edge, path), a direction and a target edge, path ?
Because then, after changing one of the edges, the gradient has to be recalculated.

  • Updating color sequences from final cut

I am completely new to Color but really like the extra control it seems to have over FCP color options. I am wondering how one goes about adding new clips to an already timed Color file? Basically, I have most of my fcp sequence in place and want to get a head start on the timing phase but there is one shot in particular that we cannot yet shoot. What is the best way to time what I have, resend to fcp, and then when the new shot is added to my timed sequence, import everything into color, have my grades still show up on the other clips so I can transfer them to the new clip, and then re-export? Hope that makes sense.

"Color timing" is more of an analog concept with actual lights and timers than it is a digital concept.
Typically, one doesn't start color work until the edit is locked. However, if you're chomping at the bit, you can change your edit within FCP and then follow the "reconform" procedure outlined within the Color User Manual. Be aware that the reconform procedure has been historically problematic for Color (Final Touch).

    Hi Kiran,
After setting the theme, you will have to change the following property in theme editor.
Complex Elements -> Tables -> Selected Cells.
    a) Background Color of Primary Selection
    b) Background Color of Secondary Selection

  • Color crashing on save!!!

    Hi there,
i've been experiencing constant crashes in Color when saving projects manually, even on short projects of one clip with a duration of 10 seconds or so. Send to Color from my FCP works fine, the auto-save works fine but doesnt save the grading information, but the manually save keeps crashing.
I'm on a MacPro with 3,2 Gb 8-core processor and 4 GB memory, so I don't think power is the problem! And Color is newly updated!
Any idear what might be the problem?
    Ragards, Nicklas!

    Hi JP,
I have managed to find a turnaround... I saved the individual grades, copied the to a new project, deleted preferences.prf and stopped using the faulty sequences.
I have been suffering to find a successful workflow for FCP and Color, this is what I have come up with so far:
I have 3 mac pro's, one for CC, and two for editing.
the first system is an old generation eight core 3.0 with ATI 1900, AJA LHe, 5Gb ram, Atto Fibre, Ciprico, JL cooper pannel, this was upgraded from a G5 (I used it with final touch HD)
the two other systems are new generation eight core with 4Gb and Nvidia 8800, built in Jbod,
all are connected by gigabit ethernet.
I have shot a Music Video on a panasonic Varicam, I dumped everything on the FRC and am now editing with material that is captured on Kona LHe, 422 8bit uncompressed SD 25 fps...
due to the many restrictions and hidden bugs in color when you export an edited sequence from FCP, I convinced the editor to start by color correcting the rushes, just like we do in one light telecine transfer from negative to tape... with the hope of re-grading all when the edit is approved.
    Here is what i did:
_+*The method that caused the problem:*+_
I opened color, set the project settings to the correct values, Pal DV, 720x576, 8bit uncompressed, 25fps....
I imported the video file, a duration of one hour and 12 minutes (I know about avoiding timelines of more than 20 minutes, but since I have done this before and it worked in final touch, i gave it a shot)
I cut the file using the split tool (in color), control X. I pre graded with primaries, secondaries, cfx.. , created some looks and grades, saved the file when I finished grading, rendered the clips overnight and Voila, the next day all was copied to the editing machine where the editor used my rendered clips as rushes and built a sequence.
I had no problem until I messed up something in the project directories, and was no longer able to save my color project... remember this project originated in color not final cut.. it autosaves properly but will crash if you attempt to save manually.
    _+*The method that worked:*+_
I started in FCP, did a preselection of the takes that needed grading, I sent to color, did a render without any grading, i used spotlight to gather all the rendered clips, and sent them to the editor who is now editing the music video with time remaps, additive dissolves, freeze frames, and all the god knows why forbidden stuff...
back in color, I went back to my original faulty project copied my grades to the new project created by FCp (send to color) applied the grades, and now the project saves properly... now, every time I render my graded clips, I copy them to the the editor's bin, each clip automatically updates itself on the editor's sequence and inherits all the effects...
color did not have any problems working on a timeline of over an hour...
and the project is well on track and I should deliver soon...
the things I learned, do not cut clips in color, it is not an editing tool, and never mess the directories on a job in progress..
and maybe this is not a bad workflow, until they manage smoother color FCP roundtrips.
I appreciate the time you spend replying to these forums, I read your messages all over and wish i had time to participate more in discussions.
i would be very glad hear about your own workflow for Color, I am not sure mine is the best, it has many disadvantages, but this once, it worked for me.
    Cheers,
    Elias.

  • Trouble with the round trip from Color to Final Cut Pro

I have edited a home movie together. I then have sent the sequence to Color for grading and then after completing the Color changes and Rendering. I sent it back to Final Cut Pro. It starts out working fine but during the transfer process it stops at somewhere between 50% and 60%. It is during the "Importing XML Data" phase. It just sits there and does not change and I have to force quit to get out of it. The exact same thing happens when I try to round trip from Soundtrack Pro 2 back to Final Cut Pro. So I am unable to make use of the changes I make in these programs.
This is a round trip process that I have successfully made many times before. Nothing has changed. I am working in Final Cut Studio 2 with the latest updates on an Intel Mac. Any advice on how to remedy this situation would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you in advance.

Hard to say where the XML interpretation is getting lost... That it stalls at 60% could mean a number of things. If you have a cuts and dissolves simple timeline, that should not be an issue. Something is causing a corruption, though and it could be a media type, a filename (which can break folder paths), a filter or motion tab which generates an invalid value, or a recompression that violates the sequence settings.
At this point, I start cutting up the original sequence and roundtripping it until it works, or breaks and then try to figure out what's different. Often there's something hidden like an imbedded recompressor in a nested sequence or something like that, that will allow COLOR will load, grade, render, and then not know what to do to re-write the export XML, or re-imbed it illegally.
There are a lot of things that FCP does that editors take for granted that COLOR utterly cannot cope with -- but may deceptively carry along and then crash on the next step.

  • MultiCamera Editing-Color Correction

I have done a shoot with two cameras. Loaded the two tapes into FCP and ready for MultiCamera editing. What if I would like to color correct the two clips to have them look similar, before I do the MultiCam edit. After the edit the clips are individual clips and need to be color corrected separately. I know you can copy CC to other clips, but it would be nice to CC the entire clip once, before doing the MultiCam process.
    Thanks,
    -carmen

Or, bring the clips into Color, do the grade, bake in the changes and send it back to FCP before multicliping the project.
If the original material is HDV, color will spit out ProRes files suitable for elegant editing.

  • Sending Color project back to FCP

    Hello Guys,
I am completely new to Color, so I apologize for this silly question.
After grading my footage in Color, I am sensing it to Render Queue for render.
    When it's done I go FILE/SEND TO/Final Cut.
First, it asks me if I want to change graded FCP sequence to match QT export codec.???
So that's the first problem, I have no idea what exactly that means??? (I had sent it from FCP to Color in ProRes and set Color Project Settings also to ProRes) so what should I change?
But the main problem is: When I send it back to FCP, footage looks exactly as it looked before being sent to Color. No grade changes. So I am wondering ... what do I miss?
    Thank you for any advise.

    Thanks for your help jPop.
I didn't use smoothcam. I sent my video from FCP to Color and then I applied a tracker to the pan&scan to do a tracking on the face of my character. I tried importing the "raw" files directly into Color without going through FCP and it did produced a file in the render file. The tracking was there but the image was cut in two... The frame is separated in two parts horizontally, making some kind of tile effect. First time I see something like that.
I found this on the online user manual of Color:
"Animating Pan & Scan parameters is not recommended for projects you’ll be sending back to Final Cut Pro, since neither keyframes nor tracker data can be sent back." :s
I'm going to try again with uncompressed video to see if that makes a difference. Do you think I could use the video that Color send to the render file and import that in FCP? If it is not cut in two...
    Best wishes
