Color grade from after effects to premier

I started my color grade in after effects before i edited my video how do i send the footage over to premiere using dynamic link? or should i export the footage individually and then import them to premier?

There is no one best way to do this for each project. On professionally produced high end projects final color grading is usually the last step by the initial color grading could have been applied upon import of the camera original footage using LUT's. For most projects that are finalized in Premiere Pro I color grade in PPro or Speed Grade. The new Magic Bullet suite from Red Giant makes this very easy and effective if you need advanced color grading.
Inside AE I will often nest sequences for initial color grading inside AE and if a shot needs a bunch of help I'll color grade before I start. I know this doesn't help much but the best, most efficient workflow depends on the project.

  • Broken Transferring from After Effects to Premier Pro

    All:
First time poster; VERY new with the Adobe Suite of tools and have really been learning through playing around and watching Youtube tutorials.
I'm creating a video on Premier using a bunch of chopped AVI captured PS3 footage.  I went into After Effects to make an intro and a few little 2 second add-in clips.  I can't remember the settings for the clips, but the bottom line was that when I render the AVI footage and then pull the clips into my Premier work, it either gives me a red bar across the timeline or it shows the clip garbled and messed up, usually locking up my computer shortly after.  The intro clip I did seems to work fine and there have been no issues, it's just those two damn two second clips that have brought me to a standstill.
I'm sure this is no big deal and is an easy formatting issue, but again, I'm just making this up as I go a lot of the time.  Thanks for all your help!

It is indeed a format issue. Use G-Spot to determine what the codec is inside that AVI then use Google to find a suitable converter. You need to convert from whatever you have into MS DV AVI type2 and PCM/WAV stereo 48 KHz sound.

  • Getting Error while transfering projects from After effects to premier pro?

    Video Filter missing: AE.ADBE FreePin3
This is the error i get when i try to export and open After Effects projects in to Premier? Im working with the puppet tool and i want to export my project to premier pro cs3 so i can further edit it there. Im using After Effects Cs3 and Premier Pro CS3? please help

Well, does Premiere have a "Puppet Tool"? Absolutely not. Therefore how do you expect this feature to come over to PPro? Sorry, but that's simply impossible. You will have to render the project or use Dynamic Link from withing Premiere ("Import After Effects Composition), not the other way around.

  • Color in .mov file from After Effects CS6

Scrren shot of how my animation looks in After Effects CS6 (on the left), vs. how it looks when rendered to a .mov file. (on the right). See how washed-out the colors look?
I am on a Mac, latest software versions and OSX.7.4. The source material is in RGB mode,  Color Setting is Adobe RGB 1998, which is my wRGB working space. Color settings are synchronized across the entire suite. In the AE project settings, I see that color management is turned on and we are indeed in the  Adobe RGB 1998 color space.
Possibly export settings, because I do not know thing one about those!
    Thanks,

Read this FAQ: What is the best format for rendering and exporting from After Effects?
Then I would suggest trying a different codec.  When you send your comp to the Render Queue it says lossless next ot the Output Module Settings, that means that it's using After Effect's defualt lossless settings, which uses a codec called Animation.  Animation is an ancient codec that delivers huge files and it isn't used so much in production anymore.  If you click on lossless the Output Module Settings screen will come up where you can change the format of your render and you can change the codec by hitting the Format Options button.
I've seen that washed out issue before with the Animation codec and just did some tests.  I also played with the Color Management settings using the Animation codec by going to the upper right hand tab in the Output Module Settings menu.  That seemed to have no effect on the final look of the render.  A quicktime render with the Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) codec seems to match the AE screenshot almost identically.
Unfortunately, you can't get the ProRes codecs without having either Final Cut Pro installed or Apple Motion.  I think it's possible to buy them from the Apple website.  However, there are other lossless codecs you can try such as Uncompressed YUV 10bit or 8bit, but I just did a test and I got a much darker render than the ProRes renders and the screenshot.  Judge for yourself what's best...
If you want ot know more, here's an FAQ on the basics of rendering and exporting in AE...

  • After Effects, Photoshop, Premier Pro CS6

I'm new to CS and have been learning quite a few different programs over the past few months regarding post-production.  I've primarily been using Photoshop, After Effects, and Premier Pro.  I have noticed there are tons of different ways to work within and across these programs through the CS package.  Because there are so many ways to accomplish an end result, I was unsure what is the right way to edit or manipulate video footage.  For instance, if I plan on using after effects to do color correction using color finesse, or matte painting and rotoscoping, what order should I open the files and change them?  Should I start in premier and then use AE, or should I change in AE, export as a rendered file format, and then import into premiere?  I noticed not all AE changes are accepted in Premiere, which would require me to render in AE first correct? Same question goes with any changes to footage in photoshop as well. Renders always downgrade the quality somewhat and by the time I'm done applying the effects and final edit, I don't want my project to be rendered two or three times before the final render. Any advice would be great or at least a direction to look to get resources to help with my workflow issue.  Thank you

    Let's define some terms first:
Shot: A continuous block of unedited footage from a single point of view. Also called a Take.
Sequence: Two or more shots that that have been trimmed or cut together to tell a story.
Scene: A continuous block of storytelling either set in a single location or following a particular character. The end of a scene is typically marked by a change in location, style, or time.  A scene can be a single shot, a simple sequence, or a combination of many sequences.
Movie: A completed project that tells a story. A movie can be 10 seconds long, or 10 hours (re: Andy Warhol)
The best use of After Effects is to work on a Shot, Scene or sometimes a Sequence, to composite elements, add graphics, or adjust the look (color grading) of a Shot or a Sequence. After Effects is probably the most difficult tool you could ever choose to edit a long form movie.  Dynamic link is very useful in the early stages of developing sequences. Once the sequences are approved, I will usually render the sequence to a production codec for use in the NLE. I'll talk more about codecs later.
The best use of Premiere Pro (or any NLE) is to organize shots into a sequence or scene, and then to organize the scenes into a movie. Most amateurs try and cut a long form (over 10 minutes) movie in a single timeline. Professional editors organize each sequence in their own timeline (notice that Premiere Pro calles timelines Sequence 01, Sequence 02 etc.) and then combine those sequences into Scenes or a movie by combining the sequences into the final movie in a single timeline. In the end, this is a more efficient way of working on any project involving more than just a few shots.
Photoshop may be used to work on shots, but it is entirely unsuited as an editing tool. Photoshop and Illustrator are primarilly used to create elements like graphics or backgrounds that are used in After Effects or Premiere as part of the story.
The best workflow is the one that carries you to project completion with the fewest number of steps in the least amount of time. In nearly every case this means that you trim your shots into sequences in your NLE. The next step is to modify shots or sequences in a compositing program like After Effects. If you are working on individual shots in After Effects, it is almost always a good idea to give them handles. I handle is a few extra frames at the beginning and end to allow for fine tuning the edit in your NLE. Good rule of thumb is to add 30 to 60 frames.
Let's talk now, just for a second, about rendering. You are a little misinformed about rendering.
There are two types of codecs used to in production. The first is a production codec. This would be something like ProRez, or Animation, or even JPEG 2000, at the highest quality settings. To be classified as a production codec the rendered files must be lossless, or nearly lossless. Production codecs take up a lot of DriveSpace. Some of them will not even play back in real-time on any system. Many production houses use image sequences as their standard production format. You can render, remember, and then render again from into production codecs with no loss in quality. All you need is enough storage space to hold the files. Every production codec that I use is at least 10 bit color depth.
The second type of codek is called a delivery codec. These are highly compressed, playback in real time on inexpensive systems, and should never, I repeat never be used in the production pipeline. Anything in the MPEG class of codecs is a delivery codec and should not be used in the production pipeline.
Come to think of it, there is a third type of video codec. These are acquisition codecs. They are the codecs used by the various camera manufactures to record video. AVCHD, is a very low data rate codec used by consumer cameras. Other cameras from the consumer level to the pro level may use various forms of MPEG encoding. These "acquisition codecs" are not suitable for use downstream in the production pipeline at all. What I mean by that is, you should never render some original footage back to the original acquisition codec. The only exception to this rule are professional cameras and recording systems that record in lossless or raw formats right from the start.
One last thing. Don't forget sound. Professional polished productions always use specific sound editing programs to complete the audio track. While you can do a fair job in most NLE's, you can do a much better job in something like Adobe Audition. Cutting, editing, or adjusting sound and AE should be limited to reference audio or scratch tracks only. After eEffects will do a good job of rendering a lossless audio track from a clean original, but it's one of the most cumbersome and ineffective audio editing tools ever designed. Oh wait, AE is not an audio editing tool, so it's okay with me.
I hope this helps you along your path.

  • Cs5.5 master collection wont install After Effects or Premier

Just upgraded from CS4 to CS5.5 and installation errors on After effects and Premier. I'm running windows 7 64 bit pro service pack 1,Duel x5650 xeons,  24 gigs of memory, 250 gb ssd. Before installing CS5 I uninstalled cs4. After the first installation error I unistalled cs5, ran the AdobeCreativeSuiteCleanerTool.exe, and removed all the adobe folders from my program files and program files(x86) folders. I've spent the last 4 hours searching for a solution, no luck yet though. I don't have any user account controls set. I think it's a font permision problem but don't know. I called adobe tech support, but no luck. Any help would be apprecieated. the following is the error code.

Thanks. I tried the all the steps in the link you provided. Plus a few others from adobe support, I spent about 4 ½ hours on the phone with them over the past 2 days. I reinstalled all the Microsoft payloads, updated my video drivers, admin privileges, closed all my services and startups, uninstalled adobe air, flash player, deleted a few fonts from my system, although that was a pain because I had to go into safe mode to delete them, and I lost track off the rest. I haven’t had any troubles installing any other software, including CS4.

  • How to make a Dynamic Link starting in After Effects to Premier (not other way around)

I have seen a ton of tutorials how to Dynamic Link from Premier to After Effects. (but not the other way around. )
I need instructions/video how to link starting in After Effect to Premier.
For example if I make a title in After Effects and then want to dynamic Link it into Premier how is this done?
    Thanks!!

I've looked at this too. When I first started using DL, I thought that it was basically a two way street between applications. But that analogy doesn't work very well. DL is PPro-centric. Like PPro is the hub, DL the spokes, and the other Abobe applications are on the rim. And this makes a fair amount of sense. The central feature of an editing suite is the editor, and that would be PPro.
Another way to look at it is that you can push from PPro to AE, and PPro can pull from AE, but AE can not push to PPro. So the direct answer to "I need instructions/video how to link starting in After Effect to Premier"  is, you can't. What you can do is make your title composition in AE, import that AE project into PPro, and use the composition as you would any other asset in PPro. Then when you change your title in AE, you'll see the change in PPro almost immediately without you having to do anything.
When I'm making motion lower thirds, for example, I now make them in AE. I let the AE project reside in the directory with the PPro project that I made the lower thirds for. Then when I want the lower thirds in PPro, I just import the AE lower thirds into the PPro project. There's a few ways to do this. One is to use the Media Browser. The MB will open up the AE project for you and let you select which composition you want to import. Another way is to File...Adobe Dynamic Link...Import AE composition which does more or less the same thing. There may be other ways as well, IDK.

  • Exporting Motion Graphics and animation from After Effects CS5

I find that exporting from After Effects is problematic when using a ramp or working with anything that has a gradient of some kind. Always banding and artifacts.
Any insight into how to achieve good result with projects such as this?
    Thx in advance.

I find that exporting from After Effects is problematic when using a ramp or working with anything that has a gradient of some kind.
...then don't! Sorry, but this is the same old thing: Simple computational math dictates that between points A and B only so many discrete color levels can exist in 8bit color and that any distance beyond 1024 pixels will result in duplicate pixels of the same colors to be adjacent, commonly referred to as banding. Or in other words: You are looking to fix a thing that can't really be fixed, even more so when compression reduces the available color range further. Yes, you can use all sorts of tricks like adding noise or adjusting gamma to minimize this, but it will never go away. The ugly harsh truth is, that it all starts with a flawed design approach and any of that is merely trying to fix things at the wrong and. As I said in my initial sentence, don't use gradients that cover such large distances along just one axis or uniformely colored areas. Ad structure by adding more gradients perpendicular/ at an angle to the main gradient, use subtle color variations, add vignetting or generally use "busy" designs that have more elements or textures that would allow to forego large uniform areas....

  • Problems exporting Animation codec from After Effects CS3 to FCP

    Hi,
I wonder if anybody can help: I am having troubles with video transfer from After effects CS3 to FCP 6
my workflow is to edit and export in FCP as quicktime movie - work on the clip in AE and then export as Animation/best quality/Millions of colors+. The footage is SD Pal 1024 x 576.
the problem is that the files don't seem to play back properly in quicktime - very jagged and lots of ghosting. I assume this is due to the memory heavy features of the codec.
However any file over 10 seconds will not be imported into FCP natively and a message reads final cut pro does not support this file type.
I overcame this by opening the clip in quicktime and then exporting again with exactly the same settings - this then reads in FCP - although this seems over the top
I now want to work with a 10 min finished comp in FCP but when I try to do this it picks up the ghosting that had appeared when playback in quicktime. However when rendered/ exported from the FCP timeline it retains the ghosting
in short I can burn a successful DVD of the footage as is from AE but it is not suitable to FCP.
I have tried exporting the clip in quicktime as quicktime DV pal but this retains the ghosting. Is this a hard ware problem or is my work flow wrong?
    thanks
    Paul

Converting from A to B means either a lossy conversion or a significant increase in storage requirements (up to 5x with DV as the starting point). You are best served with keeping conversions to a minimum.
    > cause this compressor doesn't like images
    What is that based on?
    > in several forums I have red that "automatik" inside of encore does often not work properly
This is in contradiction with the general feelings on this forum.

  • Exporting Transparent Background From After Effects

I am working on a FCP project which I have also made an animated lower third in After Effects. However, I do not know how to export from after effects preserving the transparent background- it always just ends up as being black...
    Thanks

From AE, you must use the Animation codec set to millions of colors+

  • When I add my composition to the Adobe Media Encoder from After Effects, it renders out incorrectly?

Why is it that when I add my composition directly from after effects to the adobe media encoder, it renders out of the adobe media encoder incorrectly? By that I mean the video comes out a little scrambled- parts of it overlap other parts. Is this an issue with 'dynamic link'? Did I do something wrong? I'm working in CC.

I also don't understand what you are saying. What do you mean by "parts of it overlap other parts"? A screen shot might help.
What were your render settings in AME? (Format, Codec, data rate, etc.)
What is in your AE comp? If footage, tell us what format, codec, etc. Tell us what effects were used too.
What exact version number of AE CC are you using?

  • No After Effects and Premier

    Hi!
Already purchased Adobe Creative Cloud. I opened it on Adobe application manager, there were 14 Applications that were shown, none of them are for video. Adobe After Effects and Premier aren't there. Please Help
    Thanks,
    Adrian

Both Premiere Pro and After Effects require a 64 bit processor running a 64 bit operating system.

    http://www.adobe.com/au/products/aftereffects/tech-specs.html
If you're running a 32 bit operating system such as Windows 7 32 bit, neither AE nor PP will appear for download since they won't run on your system.

  • 16:9 video sides cut off when exported from After Effects

When I export a 16:9 video from After Effects, the sides are cut off in the exported clip.  I've tried different export settings and and my composition settings are correct, from what I can tell. Does anyone know why this could be happening?
    Thanks!

and my composition settings are correct, from what I can tell.
But are they really? We cannot know, because you don't say anything about your exact render settings and comp settings, which is what is required here. You could be using an unsuitable CoDec or even crop your output inadvertently by using a specific output module setting....

  • Rendered clips play in After Effects and Premier, but not in Speedgrade

    Hi,
I am very new to the world of Speedgrade, and have started running some tests, but hit a brick wall right at the get go. I have an After Effects project, that has a few layers, some are filmed footage, some are photoshop images etc. there are also a few plugins used (Lens Flare, Particulare etc). I render this comp out to two outputs, 1 - Quicktime JPEG2000 Intermediate (Highest quality settings) and 2 - Quicktime DNxHD Proxy (Lowest quality settings). I can import and play bot these exports in After effects and Premier, but when I take them to Speedgrade, I dont get playback.
    Here are screenshots:
    After Effects footage settings:
Visual of the smoke in After Effects of the imported render:
The same file imported into sSpeedGrade:
Is this something that can easily be explained?
    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Hi Joost,
Thjank you for your feedback. I have submitted a bug-report as you suggested. I will find another workaround for now, probably doing most needed colour work in After Effects directly for now.
    Thank you

  • Exporting layers of audio from After Effects  cs6 to Premiere / or Audition? Is this possible?

exporting layers of audio from After Effects  cs6 to Premiere / or Audition? Is this possible?
Help - I have an After effects project with multiple layered files and want to copy these to Premiere / Audition. For example I know if you select multiple video files from After Effects these can be pasted straight into Premiere intact - but this does not work with audio. I want to take existing layered audio files from After Effects to Audition / or Premiere but can't copy and paste - is there a simple solution for this?

Hi thanks Dave for responding - yes that could work as a 'workaround' -  I was hoping there would be a way I can keep the existing independent audio layers and corresponding audio levels from After Effects- in the same way I can copy and paste video files from After Effects to Premiere - rather than exporting a flattened AIFF /WAV from After Effects.
This would then allow me a lot more control working on the final edit - especially as currently a lot of the audio layers overlap. It does seem there is no simple solution for this, so  otherwise I can do what you suggest - and 'stagger all the audio files' in sequence so they do not overlap on the timeline and then when I import the flattened exported AIFF file into Audition/ Premeire / I then can cut it up again and recreate the overlaps. Was hoping there might be a simple copy + paste method or other 'export method' but I guess this is simply not possible. It would save me about 7 hours of work, but not the end of the world I guess
One final point - some of the audio clips are .mp3s but the majority are WAVS, hopefully this should not create any issues on the export.
thanks again for your help, if you or anyone has any other solution pls let me know
    Best
    Alex
