Color in Drop Shadows

Thank you to the 2 people who have already responded about this, but I don't know how to get to those boxes shown.
I am using CS5, about to upgrade but have not so far.
Is it possible for someone to explain how to arrive at the dialog boxes shown on either of the 2 answers?
Thanks!!

  • Drop Shadows and Color Copiers

If you have a color copier or color laser printer try this test:
    1. Create a page in InDesign with a pale CMYK background (I'm using 40% C, 30% M)
    2. Create a small white box on top of the background and rotate it 10 to 60°
    3. Add a drop shadow with default settings (multiply 100% K at 75% opacity)
    4. Export a PDF using ANY export settings you like
    5. Print the PDF to your color copier out of Acrobat, again using any setting you like
What I get is a bounding box around my white square that is a slightly different color than the background tone. It is obviously the area that includes transparency because of the drop shadow, which is being rasterized either when the file is made into a PDF or when it is printed. This same PDF looks fine on screen in Acrobat and looks fine when rasterized into Photoshop: absolutely no difference in the color of the background visually or with the eye-dropper. This PDF also prints totally fine when I send it directly to my cheapo inkjet and when I drop it into my color managed RIP that runs our higher-end inkjets. I should add that there is no RIP in front of the 2 different color copiers I am testing. The same thing happens on a client's color copier.
What appears to be happening is that the color copier renders raster data differently than vector data, which results in this bounding box being visible. I've tried printing directly out of InDesign and indeed if I select "Print as Bitmap" in the advanced tab, the problem goes away. However, I need to be able to send out PDFs that will print correctly on any kind of office printer. Obviously I could rasterize the whole thing in Photoshop, but I've got hundreds of flyers to prepare, and they need to be small enough to e-mail and look good when printed.
There is no "Print as Bitmap" option when creating PDFs, and they would probably be too big anyway. How can I get the drop shadow effect to work correctly in this situation?
    Thanks in advance!

    Thanks for the link Bob!
It ALMOST works. In the link a procedure is described for rasterizing the whole page by creating a custom Transparency Flattener Preset, which I would THINK would solve my problem. Unfortunately the only way to access Transparency Flattener Presets in the PDF export is to set Compatibility to Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3), which creates a PDF that my color copier won't print at all! It just hangs in whatever that thing has for a RIP. I left one for about a half hour and it finally came out all crazy messed up.
The goal here is to create a relatively small PDF that can be distributed to hundreds of offices and printed correctly on whatever kind of office machine they have. My Canon color copier is brand new and if it chokes on PDF 1.3 I can only imagine what older copiers will do.
So the quest continues! Is there any way to fix the problem without rasterizing the whole page? Or is there a way to rasterize the whole page but make a PDF 1.4 or higher? Keep the suggestions coming!

  • Why do drop shadows created in Illustrator CC randomly change their color mix?

Drop shadows that I've created in Illustrator CC will randomly change their color mix when they are different mixtures of cmyk black, usually after closing and opening again. For example, if the drop shadow is 75c 68m 67y 90k, the next time I open the file it will 20c 0m 0y 100k. This happens with many of my files, and has been going on for several months. Thanks.

Hey I found out from the developers that this is actually fixed in version 29 via Bug 965861. Try the pdf viewer in the next version of Firefox, this will take care of that gradient. :-) Cheers.

  • Drop Shadow Color Issue

I am working with an ai image to which I have applied a drop shadow. The image is grayscale and therefore I want the drop shadow to be grayscale too.
When I place the image in InDesign and then send that InDesign document to my printer, she says that she is getting a "3 color separation" on the drop shadow that she's been having to strip out.
I'm confused why this is happening because I have the drop shadow options set to Darkness, not Color. However, I notice when I click on Color Guide a bunch of colored swatches appear which makes me think something's wrong.
Can someone please tell me how to make my dropshadow in grayscale, not color??

What is the colour mode of the Illustrator file (File menu)? You want CMYK mode, and you want to use Multiply or Normal for the colour mode and make sure the colour used is CMYK = 0,0,0,100.

  • Colored Drop Shadow on a Black Ground in CS5

I'm wondering if there's any way to create a colored Drop Shadow on a black ground in Illustrator.  I'm using CS5 on a windows box.  The Drop Shadow shows when I hide the black ground (of course) but I cannot, for the life of me, find out how to make it show on top of the ground, even after sendeing the 'ground' to the back.  I've even tried the Black 'ground' on its own layer and have it at the bottom of the layers Palette.
I would appreciate any help if at all possible.

The drop shadows are set to Multiply Mode by default, I believe. Multiply doesn't show on black. If you change the mode to Normal you will see a coloured drop shadow. This will be found in the Drop Shadow dialog.

  • How do I adjust the color of a glow/drop shadow in a title?

In the absence of further information, I will generalize for now.
You do your text titles color changes in Color Properties in the Titler. The fill in Color Properties is enabled only after you have added a Style.
In order for the Stroke to be enabled in Color Properties, you need to apply a Style and that style must have a Stroke in its preset. Please read the details of the Titler's Color Properties in the following Adobe documents

  • Color Shift when drop shadow is used?

I've noticed a noticeable color shift in my layout between two facing pages in inDesign CS. The layout was originally done in photoshop, so the pages are actually ONE page. I noticed when I added a drop shadow to some text in inDesign, that it shifted the color on the one page when I viewed it as a .pdf. And the color on the facing page was left alone. When I deleted the drop shadow, the color balance was restored.
I cannot show the layout to my client as a .pdf with a noticeable color shift on one page. They will freak out! This I must do, there's no getting around the .pdf
I'm also worried that the color shift will show up in the finally printing of the layout?
Can anyone tell me how to get rid of the color shift and still be able to use the drop shadow?
And why is it showing up anyway?
    Thank you for viewing

Oh, that was such a great question it got me to thinking. Its an RGB layout. My color settings are correct. But when I went and checked my Transparency blending setting it was still on CMYK!!!! Duh!!!
So I changed it, and created another .pdf and the shift was gone!
Thank you so much for your help!!! You rock!!!

  • Pages, printing: still problem with drop shadows . Frustrated.  :

    Hi -
I've spent most of the afternoon trying to get my Pages document to print properly.
I am experiencing the drop-shadow issue :heavy black clump instead of artfully placed& delicate. Printouts do not resemble what is onscreen or in preview etc.
Having read through the forums; the links; the (cruddy) Pages Help and manual; installed new HP offficejet all-in-one software...
I still get the same result.
Most of the threads don't quite fit my situation.
For instance: Several comments have to do with older versions of things. Because I do have Pages 2, I am on Tiger OS X10.4.7 , upgrading is not my problem.
One of the threads had fairly explicit directions to make a new filter in Coloursync which led all the way to a "change resolution" menu but didn't offer advice on what resolution
    modification to make. rrrrrrrr..
I am pretty lost at this point and really just want to print out a document that looks like what I have designed.
    What? How? Help! Please?

tried to print directly from Pages
If printing directly from Pages does not work then it must be an aspect of your printer. Some printers have a black and white setting that might not read shadows (which are more like greyscale) With the doc opened press ⌘ +p and browse through the options of the printer's pulldown menu and see if there are any settings that might be incorrect. (Check, in particular, your 'color sync' and 'print settings' options in the pull down menu.)

  • Thin white line around black .ai logo and drop shadow question

    Hello,
There's a very thin white line all around a black .ai logo I made when placed on a color background. It shows up in printing and acrobat (PDF % compatibility) too. Also, is there any way to get a transparent drop shadow (no white boxes) when saving as eps.
    Thanks
Running OS10.4.11 In Design CS3, intel mac.

Is the logo rasterized in Illustrator? It sounds like something was antialiased against a white background.
    >Also, is there any way to get a transparent drop shadow (no white boxes) when saving as eps
No. EPS does not support transparency. If an area is not fully transparent (because nothing is drawn there) then it is fully opaque. PDF and AI support transparency.

  • A image with a drop shadow on a shaded background

When I make a copy from my color printer of my PDF that has a image with a grey drop shadow on a grey shaded background. I get a shaded box around the image. This does not happen when I print from my b&w laser printer. The PDF was exported from Indesign, I had digital prints from the Indesign file and they are ok.

  • Photoshop Elements 7:  Newbie Needs Drop Shadow Help, Please

    Hello.
I'm brand new to Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 and need help with the Drop Shadow feature, please.
I've read the documentation, but it's not crystal clear to me, so maybe someone can guide me through it.
I want to create text on a blank white canvas, and add a little bit of drop shadow to it. That's all I want to do--plain and simple.
I can create the text, but I can't for the life of me find any drop shadow options.
The documentation I'm using is the on-line, web-based help. I type in Drop Shadow in Search, and select Add Text to a Slide.
The third step says, "In the Properties palette, set any of the following options" and then offers some options, including Drop Shadow and Drop Shadow Color.
I'll be darned if I can locate the Properties palette. Obviously, I'm not well-versed with Photoshop, so if anyone can just steer me towards this feature, I'll take things from there.
I know this is probably rock-bottom basic, but I'm stumped. Thank you!
    J. Danniel

I need a lot more help with this than I thought.
The problem I'm having is this: After creating the drop shadow effect, when I try to save the image as a transparent GIF, it quite simply.... looks horrible.
Here is what I'm doing in detail:
    1. New/Blank File.
    2. Blank File is set to transparent. (Is this the right way to make a transparent GIF?)
    3. Creating text.
    4. Cropping text.
    5. Selecting drop shadow effect.
Now, here's where I get confused. Do I just select File/Save As, or File/Save For Web?
When I just use File/Save As, and select the GIF format, the drop shadow effect in the final file looks horrible when I embed the image into a web page. The text looks good, and the file is transparent, but the effect is ugly.
When I try to use Save for Web, there is a Before/After screen. The Before side looks decent; the After screen looks horrible, too.
So, now I don't know what to do. Can you or anyone guide me through this a bit further, please? Thank you! Jd

  • White box behind transparent images with drop shadow in InDesign CC 2014 (v.10) but not in InDesign CC (v.9)

    Hi all,
Please can you help? No matter what settings I use in my print options in InDesign CC 2014 (v.10), ALL transparent images with a drop shadow are printing with a white box behind the image. If I remove the drop shadow, all prints fine. I know this is an old issue that happens with ID sometimes but I have been lucky enough to never have had it happen to me before! (All images are regular flattened TIFF images with clipping paths).
Also, feathered edges are not printing correctly and are sharp instead of feathered.
When I export the document to IDML and open it up in InDesign CC (v.9) all prints perfectly with no white boxes and feathered edges prints perfectly as well. I have compared all of the print settings (including color management, transparency flattener, etc.) between both versions and they are exactly the same. I am printing to a Xerox color laser printer. Can anyone offer any advice?
    Thank you so much,
    Christine

Okay...false alarm! It turns out that the issue was with my PRINTER settings (the settings you customize after hitting the “Printer” button at the bottom of the Print dialogue box in ID CC. I thought I had triple checked this but it seems there was one setting I missed earlier…adjusting the print brightness seemed to cause the issue. SO GLAD to know it was not InDesign…20 or so sheets/prints later….and thankful to know what was causing the issue! Thank you so much Steve for helping at any rate:) Much appreciated:)

  • Drop shadow issue in Distiller 9.0

InDesign CS4 has 2-color title, which has Pantone Orange (spot color) and Black (Process Color). The design has two objects, first object has set as Pantone and second object has set as Black on top of the Pantone object and it has Drop shadow too. The drop shadow (Black - Process color) does not appeared on Pantone object while converting PS through PDF whereas the exported PDF from InDesign converted wonderfully. I have attached an images (turned on/off Overprint Preview) for your reference. You can see the difference when you turn on/off "Overprint Preview" in Acrobat. Also thin white rule appeared. Actually the rule should not appear in the PDF. Any help much appreciated.

What happens if you print one page with the drop shadow together with only one or two pages that don't have the drop shadow? What color mix are your drop shadows?  Like Peter suggested, check the corresponding compression settings in your distiller preset. Heck, check all the compression settings in those presets. I had to use PS to work around some issue once and distinctly remember a problem with the presets making my grayscale elements look low-res because compression was set too high in a preset that was supposed to be high quality.
Then again, just use Peter's workaround.

  • Indd 5.5: When using drop shadow or lower opacity in object, I lose fills

I have ugraded to InDesign 5.5 (v. 7.5) for Mac OS. Here is my problem: If I have object "A" with transparency (lower than 100% opacity) or a drop shadow (which also uses a transparency) overlapping object "B", then "B" loses it fill when printing to a Xerox Phaser 7760GX. The fills appear  fine when exporting to a pdf and when printing from the pdf. They also appear fine when printing on BW HP printer (sans the color, of course).
The file performs the same when I open on other computers with their own InDesign application. One of my colleagues has updated v. 7.5.1  but still has same problem.
    So far, I have:
exported to IDML file and reopened the file in InDesign 5.5
    purged all inDesign preferences
    downloaded latest printer driver
following Adobe troubleshooting instructions, isolated the Transparency as the cause
(when setting spread flattening to None in the pages flyout menu, my fills return, but of course the drop shadow/transparency is disabled)
    Any ideas?

Some printers just don't get along well with ID. Exporting PDF and printing that is the normal workaround.
