Color is off on my MBP 17" display - cool/purple bias won't go away

I'm disappointed in the color setup of my new MBP 17" Unibody display, compared with the original (2006) MBP 17" that it's replacing. That old machine looked great right out of the box, but on the new one colors tend towards the cool, with a purple tinge in the highlights. Fleshtones look completely wrong, and the contrast is milky, with lifted blacks.
I've gone through the calibration process several times, and while I've improved the contrast, the cool/purple bias will not go away. I bring up the same photo on my old machine and my new machine, and the old one has natural skin tones and rich contrast, and the new one has purple highlights and off skin tones.
I've been told that perhaps one explanation is the fact that the new machines use LED backlights?
Unless I can get this monitor set up properly it's going to be pretty useless to me. Would a hardware calibration tool such as the Spyder help me get the display profile where I need it to be, or is there something inherent in the display hardware that gives it this odd color palette?

The Genius Bar's a suspect place to get possibly complicated CMS/ICC profiling calibration device-level guidance, let alone investigating Apple's apparent driver/default settings to their various and sundry display! You're a brave man! (oops! Forgot I was on the <Apple> Forums- yikes!)...
Seriously, I wouldn't expect any typical Apple Genius Bar denizen to know the ins and outs of what many pre-press folks Graphic Designers, and publishing pros only know of, not know well.
I learned a long time ago, because I was charged with designing, building, testing, and deploying a magazine publishing company-wide CMS, and I didn't want to go hungry, so I learned <fast> ;^)
The first step that I do to eliminate the color cast that does indeed 'color' (sic) almost all stock Apple displays and replace it with a pleasing, more reality-based, warmer overall but with 'clean' color ramps and solids, as well as an accurate white point and proper color and tonal balance. There's the 'free' OS X software-based method, and there's the X-Rite ColorMunki, Pantone Huey, Spyder 3 Elite, or Gretag Macbeth Eye-One Display or Photo... the 'free' OS X method's probably familiar to you- Sys Prefs>Displays>Color>Calibrate>Expert Mode. Perform this simple & brief procedure in a room or surrounding free of harsh, specular lighting, like strong fluorescent lights, or strong sunlight, etc.. Then just follow the directions on each panel in the sequential series of Dialog Boxes, and use the more traditional Mac 1.8 Gamma setting generally and a 6500k White Point; mainly because those two are the 'Old Skool' (well, actually, 5200-5500k White Point's more common setting from Back in the Day, but 6500k is an adequately LONG way from the cold, 'glacial-effect' harshness of any higher WP), and the 1.8+6500k combo strikes an pretty good balance between ultimate accuracy and pleasing warmth. DO NOT check the 'Use Native White Point' box, save the ColorSync display Profile you've just helped yer Mac create for ALL Users' usage, and make certain, before you exit Displays, that you hike on over to the other side of the button, 'Display', and make certain that you've unchecked the 'Automatically Adjust Brightness...' box... NOW exit Sys Prefs, and behold your Band-Aid First Step at getting away from the cold and slanted world of Apple Default Display Profiles. You'll need WAY more accuracy of a good hardware calibration unit if you want to get closer, much closer to Display Nirvana... which brings us to the Next Step. If you've got an LED backlit LCD screen, you'll only need to borrow a unit from someone, or have it done, far less frequently than in days past, because you don't have to concern yourself with the color/brightness/White Point/Gamma/contrast 'drift' of fluorescent-backlit screens, which dim and drift as they age, or the 'phospher aging' of a CRT screen, LED backlit screens need no 'warmuo time', and stay much more consistent throughout their lifespan. Still, you need to somehow get ahold of preferably a Gretag-Macbeth Eye-One Display 2 or the more expensive but more versatile for creating custom ICC/Colorsync Profiles for all your input, output, and display devices, but is about 6 times more expensive than the really good Eye-One Display 2 display calibrator, OR one of the more recent Spyder units, or even an X-Rite ColorMunki (the 'Photo' model, for most users here). I like to avoid the ColrMunki because, amongst other things, it's WAY hard to do what the instructions say you need to in order to produce an accurate profile, and its design gives you way too many opportunities to damage your display. The Huey's a little too basic and less accurate overall than the others, but is still WAY better than our Sys Prefs profile, of which the only reason to perform is to stave off insanity.
Read the manual/PDF, try it slowly and carefully, especially the ColorMunki, which I like less than the others for the aforementioned reasons... experiment with creating two different hardware display profiles with ANY of these calibrators- one with the traditional Mac 1.8 Gamma, and one with the more au courant 2.0 Gamma setting, both with the 6500k White Point, and see which one you prefer for your own use and your own tastes. Even though most calibration unit manuals will order you to stick with the 2.0 Gamma setting, there are many instances where the 1.8 is superior in actual CMS use. Where those instances are is a whole other post; stay focussed on doing the above, and you'll never regret the time, money and energy you put into it- it's a GREAT investment, and one that will go most, if not all of the way you want to go in terms of fixing your Apple Caste' default display conundrum... good luck! =^D

  • Emac display is purple

To make a long story short my emac qualified for the recall with the logic board. It was replaced, when I got it home the computer would not turn on. I took it back they replaced it again, when I got it home it would not turn on.....took it back again they punched some things on the keyboard and it turned on. This was about 1 month ago now my screen is purple and won't go away. I am loosing my mind now. I run a small buisness off this computer and can't afford to not have it AGAIN for a week. HELP HELP HELP

I would bet you have another bad display.
I went through 4 emacs, 8 video boards and 3 logic boards as a result to my display issues. I asked apple if anyone else had been experiencing these problems and they all said no, not at all. Well now they have a series of serial numbers that are bad and my emac falls into it.
My problems were screens going dark, a extremely blurry screen, unbearable high pitch squeels, a Cyan and Magenta screen, and now I have another problem that will be looked at today, (bright pinpoint of light when I put machine to sleep).
My advice, if you have the extended warranty which I thankfully bought, is to call Apple and talk to tech support. Tell them your story and your situation what they may offer is to ship you a replacement emac upon receipt of your bad one or, if you have the warranty, send someone down to fix it. If they send someone in that takes about 2 days if you live in a large city or near one. If you get the new machine that takes about 4 days. They ship the new one out to you immediately upon receipt of your older one.

  • My TB Display 27" is broken? Color all off, patches of random spots, RGB lines in some places.

This morning I decided to wipe my Thunderbolt Display clean; I used a wet and a dry screen cleaning wipe. Then I plugged it inot my 2013 15" MacBook Pro and the Display looked horrible, like I'm looking at it through a piece of gauze or something and the color was off and I could see some like pixel-streking and RGB pixels. I plugeed and unplougged it from the MBP several times, changed ports and restarted, and the same. After 15 minutes it look 85% better, but it's not quite as bright and I notice the bottom part of the screen has a purple tinge to it. Did I kill my display? The wet wipes hardly have any liquid on them.

I think you got some moisture under the glass. Get a few paper towels or latex gloves and carefully take the outer glass off your display. The magnets are VERY strong but look on YouTube, lots of videos showing people doing the same but I've found you don't need a suction cup.

  • Display colors suddenly off - all black objects red or red glow

Suddenly, display colors went off. The cursor arrow is now red. Script displayed on browsers is now black with red hue and overtone. Pictures all "glow" red where they are supposed to be black. I did consciously change any settings. Short of a "clean install," how can I restore the original color display settings, or could it be another problem?

    Hello stepheneng,
Have you checked in System Preferences>Displays>Color tab for settings there? Is your normal Display Profile selected? You may want to try calibrating by clicking on the button found in that pane and see if you can improve your display.
    hope that helps some,

  • MBP Matte display "hazy", vs. Powerbook display?

I'm having some wierdness with my new (and great!) MBP. It seems like the matte coating on the display is "too matte" or something like that. Solid colors aren't uniform, but seem "shimmery," as if there was a very thin oil slick (or fingerprint layer) over the screen. This is not the case with my old TiBook matte screen. The MBP display is unquestionably brighter, with richer colors - but with less color consistency. I would almost say that I prefer the TiBook display over the MacBooks, because it is sharper and more regular. The fogging effect on the macbook screen is strong enough to hide image details that are apparent on the older screen, such as slight color shifts and banding in gradients.
Has anyone else noticed an issue like this with their MBP matte display? Especially someone who has an older apple laptop screen to compare? I'm really hoping that this is a "bad screen" issue that I can get fixed, and not just the product of crappier (but brighter) screens in the MBP line. Note: i'm not talking about moving visual noise or flicker in the screen - it is perfectly stable, just a bit ugly :/
    Thanks,

    MacBook Pro 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Excellent catch, Jayson Allyson1. The 18-bit thing is simple. Each "pixel" on your LCD screen is actually made up of 3 subpixels: red, green, and blue, very close together. In "millions of colors" mode, each of these subpixels should have 256 possible values, from 0 (off) to 255 (full bright). This is 8 bits per subpixel (2^8 = 256) also known as 24-bit color, for a total of 2^24 = 16,777,216 displayable colors.
Some cheaper/faster desktop LCD displays (and, apparently, notebook displays) are only capable of displaying 6 bits per subpixel, or 18-bit color, totalling 2^18 = 262,144 colors. I didn't know the MBP had one of these unfortunate displays, but apparently it's common.
Dithering is placing a lower number of colors in a certain pattern to trick your eye into seeing a higher number of colors. This is done by the video card automatically. So, -if- this theory is correct, the speckled pattern is coming from normal dithering.
Now apparently the x1600 is supposed to do "temporal dithering" which involves altering the color of -the same pixel-, quickly enough to mitigate the pattern effect you're going to get from dithering. From what I can tell from the message board threads, this is stuck in freeze-frame (or the dithering is just really bad) due to a video BIOS bug.
The problem is, who knows if this is the actual issue, and if it is, it was apparently fixed a while ago, so why would they ship like this? Also, it means everyone should be seeing this issue, unless some people got 24-bit displays (unlikely).
Regardless, this gives some cause for hope. Thanks!

  • Colors are off

I've used previous Photoshop versions and recently upgraded to Photoshop CS5 (I've used the same Dell monitor with previous versions and it looked just fine before). For some reason the colors I use in Photoshop CS5's work-space are off.
For example, the menu and interface is the perfect grey color, yet when I select a grey on my workspace, it shows as a tan color (see attached image). The only way to make it show the true colors (its not just the greys, all colors are off), is if I select in View>Proof Setup>Monitor RBG, then select View>Proof Colors. Even in CMYK, the colors are off.
My Color Settings Working Spaces are set to:
RGB: sRGB IEC61966-2.1 (I've tried changing this to "Monitor RGB" and "Adobe RGB (1998)" and it doesn't help my issue)
CMYK: U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2
    Gray: Dot Gain 20%
    Spot: Dot Gain 20%
Even though it looks off, when I Save for Web, the greys and the rest of the colors are saved normally. So it's just in my workspace, which makes it hard to figure out what true color I'm using as I'm designing.
I don't understand why this is happening and how to fix it. I shouldn't have to turn on Proof Colors - Monitor RGB every single time I open Photoshop. And of course, I can't even view it with Monitor RGB Proof Colors on when I'm working in CMYK. Any suggestions?

I haven't had specifically the problem you are seeing, but it's possible the factory monitor profile is just wrong or corrupted.
Removing that Dell profile from within the Devices tab is required to get your system to use the system default sRGB profile, and if the sRGB profile doesn't give you accurate color (I believe the 2208 is a wide gamut monitor, so it probably won't) you may need to use a calibration device if you want really accurate color.
Some rules of thumb to consider:
If you want your non-color-managed output of sRGB files (e.g., most stuff shown by Internet Explorer) to exactly match what you see in Photoshop, just use the Windows default sRGB profile for the monitor profile (i.e., remove the 2208 profile).
If you want colorimetrically accurate color from your color-managed applications (e.g., Photoshop), then you'll want to remove the profile and specifically calibrate your monitor using a device made for the task.  In this case, Photoshop and other color-managed apps will use the document and monitor profiles and accurately display your images, but non-color-managed apps will not, and will thus look different (in your case, much more saturated).
You might want to make a copy of that file (C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color\SP2208WFP_DVI.ICM) in a safe place before making any changes; I'm not sure whether removing it from the dialog might actually delete it.

  • LR3 and printer color is off.

I have a  Epson CX7800 printer and when I try to print out my picture, the color is off.  My image looks great, but when I try to print, the color's are not the same.  I've gone to my printer settings and set them to no color management and set the default in LR, there is no color match.  Am I doing something wrong?

Spyder 3 pro just over $100, Eye One Display 2 now replaced by the Pro, but Display 2 is fine and can be had new for arund $100.  Both vary a bit from unit to unit, but much better than nothing.
To the OP, Lee Jay's link to the Epson leaflet might be slightly confusing for the setting for the Epson CX7800 or other non-pro Epson printers.  The printer dialouge (main tab, click advanced button) looks something like this:
You need to select the paper type and "Photo" or "Best Photo" quality in the basic settings.
The LR print dialog should like this:
Obviously, choose the appropriate profile for your printer and paper.  If profiles weren't installed when you installed the printer driver, you might need to go to the Epson site and download the profiles for your printer.

  • Printouts light and color is off

I am using lightroom 4.3 . My printouts are off AGAIN.  Don't know why.  I use an epson 2000, costco (ilford glossy} paper profile.  Looks great on the screen but is washed out, color is off when I print.  Prints out fine from photoshop elements. I am beginning to like LR 4.3 but Really don't like this.
Is there a setting or something that makes it not match the screen that I may have inadvertently turned on???
    Very frustrated.
    MBR

Send off a reference image (data known to print correctly). You can find an example here:
    http://digitaldog.net/files/Printer%20Test%20file.jpg
Might read this piece on prints that don't match a display:
    http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/why_are_my_prints_too_dark.shtml
IF possible, send the same reference image file through Lightroom and if possible, another ICC aware application using identical settings. Photoshop, Preview on Mac etc should work.

The main error in this position is thinking ANY sized SSD can be "storage"
Any Macbook SSD should be idealized as a working platform computer system, containing all your applications, documents, and weekly-use necessary files; and all media files such as ‘big-data’ (music/PDF collections/video/pictures), unless directly needed in the near future, should be kept off the computer and on external storage USB or likewise bare hard drives.
You cant do what you want without removing the internal SSD
Officially, it is not possible for an end user to upgrade the storage in any Retina Display MacBook Pro model after purchase

  • MacBook Pro's Color LCD "shifts" when connected to external display?

I have a 2010 MacBook Pro with the hi-res anti-glare screen. I just noticed that the internal color LCD "shifts" its colors when I connect it to an external display (a Dell 2408 WFP). If I disconnect the external display, the colors internal color LCD go back to "normal".
I have two images to show what I mean:
This is what it looks like with the external display disconnected i.e. the MacBook Pro on its own: <http://www.flickr.com/photos/vazexqi/4558641163/sizes/l/>
This is what it looks like with the external display connected: <http://www.flickr.com/photos/vazexqi/4559271260/sizes/l/>
The wallpaper is from pixelgirlpresents.com. I didn't notice this problem before with my older 2006 Core Duo MacBook Pro (OS X 10.5.7).
My guess is that with the external display connected, somehow the color LCD decides to use the external display's profile as well (instead of its own).
Any ideas on why this is happening? And, more importantly, any ideas on how to fix this?
    Thanks.

@Stefan: Thanks for the tip. I tried it but unfortunately it didn't solve the issue. The color is still off.
Incidentally, just out of curiosity, I tried these two things:
    1) I tried the "Mirror Displays" option in the Displays Preference Pane. With this option enabled, both displays actually displayed the right colors (right with respect to how each display is calibrated).
    2) I opened the same desktop wallpaper in Preview. Whenever I drag the Preview window so that it spans/crosses both displays (external and Color LCD), there is a light flicker in the wallpaper in the Preview Window. For that brief moment, I can see that the color is right before it changes to the shifted color on the Color LCD.
I found a possibly related thread on a different forum <http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=37841>. That doesn't seem to help when both displays are connected.
Now, I am just wondering if this is considered normal - wonky color shifts between the desktop/different windows happen when you have two displays connected....
    Nick
PS: Note that I am not a graphics designer so my definition of right/wrong is just based on my experience looking at the wallpaper and remembering what it should look like on each display by itself.

Just want to know how to clear this lock off of my phone that displays on the left side my battery. I believe it hinders me from bringing my key pad up when trying to search for one. Unless it was something that I enabled.

I'm guessing that the icon shows a padlock with a circular arrow around it.  That is orientation lock - prevents the screen from rotating.  To switch it off - go to Control Centre (swipe up from bottom of screen) and press the icon in that screen. Close Control Centre by swiping it down
