Color issue in an InDesign CS4 document

Something strange is happening in an InDesign CS4 document: All of my my objects that use RGB color swatches appear darker (or grayer) in the document than the RGB swatches themselves. It might be that all of the objects are converting to CMYK and I'm not getting the true RGB colors within this document. Oddly, when I copy an object from this document – say, a simple shape with 100% color fill – into a new document, the object renders correctly with RGB in the new document. That makes me think I've got a universal setting within the original document that is converting my colors strangely. (Potential clue: In the new document, when I click on an RGB swatch, the Swatch Options box shows the Color Mode as RGB, making the color correct. In the original document, when I click on the same swatch color, the Color Mode says System (Macintosh). But when I switch it to RGB, I see a warning icon referring to Out of Gamut color, and when I click on the Gamut correction, it renders the RGB swatch as the off-color I'm trying to avoid.) Is there a universal setting change I should make in the original document so my colors render correctly on screen (I'm trying to use the Web Color Mode)? Thanks!

Brilliant, Peter, thank you. I wouldn't have figured that out on my own. Oddly, the Edit Menu settings had been modified and I had to search to even find the Transparency Blend Space menu. Once I did and reset the Menus, I could switch the CMYK to RGB (no idea how that got switched), and the colors are as they should be. Thanks so much!

  • How to create a smallest file size pdf from indesign CS4 document

How to create a smallest file size pdf (suitable for upload to a website) from indesign CS4 document which contains multiple illustrator CS4 illustrations.
I have chosen the "smallest file size option" but the pdf file is over 30MB, can anyone help please.
    Thank you

    One trick is to
Set the placed graphics to have a transparency of 99.9% (you can do this with Find/Change and select Objects)
This is enough to force the graphics throught the Transparency Flattener
Next set the Transparency Blend Space to RGB (Edit>Transparency Blend Space)
Next set a custom Transparency Flattner Preset Edit>Transparency Flattner
    Next
    Use File>Export and choose
    Smallest file size
PDF Compatibility Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3)
In Advanced Section - go to transparency and selec the new Flattener Preset you created.
*this will convert your vectors to raster, but it should reduce your file size

  • Strange color swatch behavior in InDesign CS4

I coedit a quarterly online newsletter using InDesign CS4 on my two Macs, a PowerBook and a Mac Book Pro. My coeditor uses InDesign CS4 on her PC.
Lately something strange has started happening. We use a standard text color for hyperlinks (R=60 G=77 B=157). Two weeks ago, every time I applied the color swatch to the text, it took on a "wooly," three-dimensional look. I was using my PowerBook and swapped over to my Mac Book Pro, and all was well.
In the next draft of the newsletter, on my Mac Book Pro I'm getting the same result as I did on my PowerBook. I've attached the draft in PDF format so you can see what I'm talking about; the effect is on page ten.
I've tried fiddling with both the Swatches and Character panels to get rid of this effect, but so far nothing is working.
    Any suggestions?
    Buzz Haughton

    Hi Buzz,
Unfortunately, uploading PDFs or anything else takes a good measure of time to pass through -- long enough to post a follow-up with an inline image, with this icon in the toolbar at the top of the reply box:
Since you mention it's just the 'hyperlink' text, I don't think it's an unintentionally applied shadow effect, as that can't be done inline. And it's visible in the exported PDF as well, ruling out InDesign view quality settings.
Perhaps there is something near the text frame that forces the text to be rasterized. Can you check with a Select All?
I forgot: there's also a View Transparency Effects, or something to that effect. It's in the same panel as Separation Preview.

  • InDesign CS4 documents won't stay minimized

My newspaper just went to InDesign as our pagination software, switching over from Quark, and we love it. However, there is one nagging issue with it that we cannot seem to figure out, so I thought I'd toss it out here.
There are times, of course, when you want to minimize your page into the dock to tend to business in other application windows on your desktop. However, when you minimize an InDesign page/document, after a certain period of time, the window will spontaneously maximize back up onto the desktop.
Basically, we'd like to know how to keep an InDesign page/document minimized until we want it to be maximized. We don't want it to bounce back up of its own volition, we want it to maximize when we decide it should be maximized.
We are running Mac OS X 10.6.4.
Thanks in advance for any help.

This happens to us, too. Drives me nuts.
In my case, it doesn't happen spontaneously or randomly, but when I have one or more pages minimized in the dock and open a NEW page to work on, the last page I was working on opens first. I don't want that one! If I did, I'd open it. I want to work on the NEW one.
    Why does InDesign do this?
    Does anyone have an answer?

  • Dual monitor color issue - oversaturated image in CS4

Hi, I wonder if you can help. I found people having similar issues, but never seen an actual answer, so your input would be greatly appreciated.
    My set-up:
MacBook Pro Dual Core intel based 15.4 2.6GHz running OS X 10.5.6 - also my primary display
    HP LP2475- secondary display

Both monitors were calibrated using X-rite Eye-one LT (each with a separate profile)
I've tried calibrating each monitor 3 times and still get the proble,
    My problem:
Running in dual monitor mode in bridge or safari/firefox- no problems at all: almost consistent colour between both monitors.
When I open the images in Photoshop CS4, they look fine on my MacBook screen, but when I drag them over to the HP the color is grossly oversaturated - especially in the red. What am I doing wrong? (in fact on the HP monitor, the color looks perfect in bridge but super insanely saturated in CS4)
Does anyone have a clue on how I can fix this?
    Thanks!

You say your running 10.5.6?  Why haven't you updated to 10.5.8?
FWIW, I never had color issues under 10.5.X, however I have since upgrade to 10.6.

Sorry, actually, there was a thread up a ways and someone was having the

With that said, I am CERTAIN that in not too much longer, I will run

  • Colors look weird when printing CS4 document

    Hi
Migrating from InDesign CS2 to CS4 gives me a problem that I cannot solve.
I checked all possible settings with the program, the document and the printer but still it looks like a profile mismatch.
Colors are way undersaturated or dull and flat. It comes close to as if assigning a srgb profile to a Adobe profile embedded photo. Sort of double profiling.
In my old system here at the office (medical photography ), I use Tiger OS 10.4 with a G4 Mac,  everything was fine. I remember though it took some time to get it right at that time. Never change a winning team, but I have to move to a MacPro with Mountain Lion OSX 10.8.5. As the old but trusty G4 starts to behave unreliable. Other info:  images (jpg) have an Adobe 1998 RGB profile, that's also my working space, and I print on glossy A4 paper using a dedicated printing profile.
When I print the same pictures straight in Photoshop 4 or 5 they look fine. On the profiled Eizo screen both the .innd files as the Photoshop files look natural.
I tried all different settings. In CS2 the Printer Color Management has an option to put it Off. That was also my former setting. In CS4 there are two option 1. Color Sync 2. Epson Color Controls. Either one of these two don't make any difference.
Any help or suggestion is appreciated, as I have no clue.
    Thanks
    Kees

As a Windows user I didn't pay enough attention to recall the specifics, but I remember there was a period of time when the monitor profile was introduced during printing.

    Thanks,

You must include the comment() as one of the elements that you select to process.
It is best to use xsl:value-of or xsl:copy-of with select="informaltable/comment()" to avoid processing comments from other parts of your XML file. In other words, always make the processing of comment() specific to the location where you need to extract the content of the comment.

  • How can I convert a indesign cs4 document to a cs3 or cs3?

Also is there a way to get indesign cs3 or cs2 for free or free trial?

Menu File, choose Export, choose file type "CS3 Interchange (INX)" ... (now doesn't that sound obvious?).
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}

For free!? The older trial versions are not anymore available via the official Adobe channels. Perhaps a google could help.

  • Printing issues from InDesign CS4 pdf file

    Good morning,
Could you help explain and possibly resolve an issue I'm having with an InDesign CS4 pdf file where the text and image drop shadows (40%) are printing as solid black blocked shapes from a large format printer. The file encompasses 1 overall image, 1 image with drop shadow, 3 text frames with drop shadow effect applied to the text and 1 group set of simple rectangular and ellipse objects with a glow.
My colleagues in graduate school experienced the same with their files and the output bureau's rasterized the pdf file in Photoshop where it printed out with good resolution. Shouldn't this be resolved first in InDesign rather than rasterizing the file?
I appreciate any help and insight you could offer myself and my colleagues.
    Thank you, Kathryn

The printing service uses Acrobat 8 Pro and HP large format printer. My InDesign CS4 document is in the color mode of RGB and color type as Process. I saved it as a pdf file using the standard settings as follows: Preset: High Quality Print, Standard: None and Compatibility: Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3). Are there options I should be paying more attention to when creating the PDF file? Also, I was reading up on Peter Spier's response links.
This brings me to the next question...I'm creating a photo book for grad school with approximately 40 pages of images (RGB, 300dpi) with feathered drop shadows. What would be the best settings to use when exporting as a pdf file for printing services?
    Thank you for your help.

  • Indesign CS4 - Export to SWF and font issue

    Hello,
How do you embed a font in an Indesign CS4 document when you are going to export it to an SWF file?
I have an Indesign CS4 document that uses a particular font.  This document is then exported to an SWF file which is then uploaded in our intranet website.  When users view the internal website, the SWF font uses a different font like Times New Romans.  I do not get this issue because I have the particular font used in that document installed on my machine.
Are there any work arounds for this issue other than distributing the font used in that exported SWF file?

InDesign should embedd fonts by default when exported to swf... may be you have some protected font in use? do you have problems with other fonts too? Quick and dirty workaround is convert your text to outlines... not good one but fast...

  • Adobe InDesign CS4 Printing To 11 x 18 Issues

I am trying to print an 11 x 18 in Adobe InDesign CS4 however, it will print automatically to an 8.5 x 11. I have tried to set the printing preferences but It defaults back to 8.5 x 11. This issue only happens in InDesign and not other Adobe products.  My operating system is Windows 7 64-bit and the printer is a Toshiba  E-Studio 3530C. Could this be a pnnter driver issue with Adobe InDesign CS4.

Try this: go into the print driver (the "Setup..." button at the bottom of InDesign's print dialog box) and set your custom paper size there. Then, back in the InDesign dialog, set the Paper Size to "Defined By Driver."

  • InDesign CS4 Export and PDF Printing Problem

Whenever we print PDFs created from InDesign CS4 documents that contain transparencies, drop shadows or gradients we've been having issues. White boxes will appear instead of the drop shadows and transparencies, and the colors of the gradient images will be completely different from what's in the original file. Of course, the PDF always looks perfect on the screen, and the .indd document prints correctly. The problems only occur when we print the PDFs.
We create the PDFs in InDesign using the File>Export function, and we've tried every version of PDF compatibility from 4 to 8. We're not exactly sure if this is an InDesign issue or an Acrobat issue, but we wanted to check and see if there's something specific we need to do doing during the exporting process to prevent this from happening.
Our IT department has been working on this but they're stumped, and the fine folks at Xerox insist that our printers are "fully operational."
We quickly looked through previous postings and didn't see another problem like this one listed, but we apologize if this has already been addressed and we are posting the same issue twice.
Any suggestions or insight anyone can offer is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks Bob! I followed the information the links you provided and it solved our problems! I won't bore you with the details of how long how many different people have been trying to solve this issue, but let's just say it's a lot.
You are being virtually hugged and/or high-fived by our entire Communications, IT and Printing Departments. THANK YOU!

  • Indesign CS4 Crashes When Printing to PDF

    Hi all,
I've been having an issue lately with InDesign CS4 crashing every time I print to PDF. I've never had the issue before, but now it seems to happen constantly. I am running Windows 7, and when I print to PDF, my dialog box gets to "DOWNLOADING PROCSET" and then it just freezes and goes unresponsive. If I end InDesign through Task Manager, and reopen to try and print again, the same issue happens. If I completely restart my computer, reopen InDesign, and then print, it will work fine, for a while. This is happening with multiple documents. I am trying to avoid reinstalling, but may have to try that next.
When InDesign gets in its freezing spree, I've quit and reopened InDesign, then printed to a Postcript and Distilled with no issues, but the PDF printing still does not work.
    Any ideas?

    Hi
New to this forum, but I too have had a problem with printing a PDF from InDesing. what I have found is when my dialog box gets to "DOWNLOADING PROCSET" and it just freezes, whats actually happening is the 'SAVE AS' dialogue box has appeared, but is not the active window. When I ALT+TAB through my open applications, in Windows 7 it changes your screen to 'preview' the programs you flick through, and I find it there, attached to outlook, or the internet. Upon further investigation, it appears to attach itself to which ever program I click, after the initial "DOWNLOADING PROCSET" freezing.
So now when I PDF from InDesign and it freezes at this point, I click the Desktop icon (in windows 7 its the rectangle in the bottom right corner) and it seems to 'place' the 'SAVE AS' dialogue box here, where I can actually select it and click SAVE.
    Hope this helps?
    Mike

  • Placed PDF made in Quark bug, InDesign CS4 XP

    Hi,
I've just been bitten by the bug that causes characters to drop out when you create a PDF from an InDesign CS4 document that has a placed PDF made in Quark.
Has it been resolved? I looked at the update notes to 6.0.2 and 6.0.3 and couldn't see anything about it.
This is fairly urgent for me. If it hasn't been resolved, are there any workarounds?
    Thank you,
    Ariel

You may be right... but it didn't seem relevant at the time, since I rarely receive Quark files, so I probably phased out.
Anyway, the 6.0.2 for InDesign CS4ME does not fix the issue. I thought it might. And what a story it was to upgrade (which I just did this evening). Apparently, the 6.0.2 upgrade only works for a later build of IDCS4 (something like 6.0.0.421). I had the earlier build (something like 6.0.0.270). And the only solution was to completely uninstall InDesign, download the latest Demo on the Winsoft site (800MB. Took me around 2 hours). Install that. Then download the update and install that as well.
And it didn't even fix the issue!
The only positive side is that all my preferences survived the trauma intact!
