Color management for the umpteenth time

I am flummuxed by color management. I have read everything about it and still I have mixed results. Lets start at the basics:
1)I have a Canon pixma 6600d printer
2)I have calibrated by lcd monitor with Huey.
3)I use elements 5.0
4) I have assigned pictures for Adobe rgb.
5) I have read the instructions from Steves Digicam which recommends that I make the source adobe rgb and the target the paper profile that I am using. I am using the correct paper profile.
6) In Print preview, I set the color adjustment to manual, say no to icm, and none to media. This is according to the instructions of all color management gurus.
Some interesting things are happening. When I print a picture file that is Dng (adobe camera raw), the print looks terrible.Too much saturation. heavy magenta, etc. When I print a jpg file of the same picture, the result is much better although not the best. The best match is for one of 2 options. 1)Turn off icm in pe5, use printer color management. or 2) leave on Adobe rgb in pe5. In print preview: set source to adobe rgb. In printer profile, set to adobe rgb and relative colormetric. In Print driver, set color adjustment to auto. These are the most satisfying results.
Questions:
1) Are there problems in printing from a dng file or should I always try to print from a jpg file on my 6600d?
2) If I am using printer color management, should I always turn off color management in pe5 edit?
3)Is there anything else I haven't thought of that explains why I am having lousy results using the correct canon paper profiles in the print preview screen?
Thanks. I know this has been covered a million times.

1. Same as Source - The data that's sent to your Printer is still the data that was created for the Colour Space of the Image. In your case the Source Space indicates sRGB. So sRGB colour numbers get sent to the printer.
What doesn't get sent is any profile information i.e there is nothing to tell the printer your sending it to that the colour space is sRGB. This means that if the printer is to perform colour management, it can't because it doesn't know the source profile - although there may be an option in the Printer Driver to force it to a preset.
2. In some Epson Printer Drivers there are two or more settings for Colour Management and yes they are confusing and I don't think consistent across the range.
I can't tell you all the possibilities but on my R2400, the ICM checkbox turns on Colour Management in the printer and then you have to select a bunch of other options about input profile, rendering intent, and output profile e.g. for the paper/ink type etc, etc,
However, by checking ICM ( on the R2400) it also makes visible an option called No Colour Adjust and by checking this it turns OFF colour management.
So, yes confusing, ICM appears to turn CM ON and then NCA turns it OFF. If this is the setting you use then in Elements you have to select a Print Profile that matches the printer/paper/ink i.e one of the Epson profiles.
3. The Printer Colour Management setting tells Elements to do no Colour Management but it will pass source data to the printer along with a profile.
Elements wont convert the Source Colour Space to the Printer/Paper Colour Space. The assumption then is that you set the Printer Driver accordingly to do the Colour Management Conversion. This might typically be to check ICM and select those features I mentioned in #2.
4. As for the R380 - I can't say what settings that have but take a look at the link below for more info about setting up Epson Printers.
It shows the R800 but the info may be similar for your 380

    If you just activated your iPad and you are using it for the first time, you can plug in to the wall charger and use it while it is plugged in if you want to do so. Leave it plugged in overnight and let it charge all the way up to 100%.
    If the battery has enough of a charge already just go ahead and use it as is then charge it all the way overnight.

  • I have lost my tabs for the umpteenth time. Session restore only works if your kids hit the restore button. Otherwise, a new session gets started. FRUSTRATED!!!

    Even though I have my settings set to the "correct" settings to hopefully prevent the lost tabs problem, you still have to be careful in order to prevent the loss of tabs. I have lost all my research again and again... If for whatever reason FF gets closed the wrong way, and then the "restore session" button doesn't get clicked when you re-open, and then you happen to open any further tabs, suddenly you can never get back to all your previous tabs.
    I have scoured the internet for solutions to this problem, looked for ways to get them back, and ways to prevent this from occurring. I Have set my browser to the recommended settings. I have tried to restore my sessions. I don't understand WHY cannot the tab feature be made easy to save????
    I get all these tabs set up... and then, WHAM! suddenly they evaporate, never to be seen again.
    love the Tab system. It's visual. It's relatively easy to navigate. I don't forget they are there, and they are effortless to create...unlike bookmarks.
    Why in the world can't I give a tab group a name and then have it be permanently available, like a group of bookmarks that I can create and access at will?
    Why must it be that I have to search the internet for ways to restore them, and then the recommendations are geared only to computer literate people able to extract them from the bowels of their computer memory in some obscure and confusing procedure?!?
    I have looked at and installed numerous add-ons in the hopes of solving this problem and have not found a satisfactory solution. It seems like there are tons of other people out there who wish for this exact same thing, What is the hang-up with this???

    Firefox has the ability to bookmark all open tabs, in each window separately. It's not a "session manager", but if it's the same set of tabs you want opened at the same time all the time, you might consider using that feature.<br />
    Right-click a tab and select '''Bookmark All Tabs...''' and then give the folder a name. When you want to open all those tabs simply middle-click that folder or right-click that folder and select '''Open All in Tabs'''.
    As far as the "problem" you described...... <br />
    # You really should have a separate logon user account for your kids or for each of the other users of that PC, so they wouldn't be using your Firefox installation. That is a basic feature in Windows that goes back to the days of Windows 2000.
    # Firefox saves the previous session, but if that session isn't restored during the "current session" it is gone. That's the way it is designed to work. A temporary session save feature.
    # To save a session or multiple session try using a "session manager" extension to "extend" what comes with Firefox. Here's two extensions with a session manager feature for your consideration. <br />

  • Dock stops unhiding (for the umpteenth time)

    Maybe this is a rhetorical question, but why does my dock stop unhiding at least once a day. My only recourse has been to turn hiding off and use up valuable screen territory or restart and waste valuable time. I know many other people have this same problem. After 11 iterations of Tiger, is there some reason certain software engineers can't fix this little problem? These kind of persistent annoyances which never seem to be addressed don't inspire a lot of confidence or do much to maintain brand loyalty...

    In system preferences, deselect the "automatically hide and show the dock" box.
    Now, back on your desktop, command/option/d will toggle the dock on and off; it shouldn't disappear or return on its own.
    I'm using Leopard, but this worked in Tiger for me, and even earlier, I believe.

  • Suspected JavaScript bug (for the umpteenth time)

    I really hope someone can help me with this as it is becoming both time-consuming and downright painful.
    Without installing any new plugins, extensions, software, etc., I sometimes get a very odd bug in safari (and google chrome, firefox; but not Opera) where e.g. the cog wheel in MobileMe doesn't work. I can click it, but it disappears in a split second. Same happens when clicking on the cloud icon.
    Also downloading a PDF brings down three copies of it when clicking on the download icon within the Open PDF file in safari.
    I have tried to remove all plugins, extensions, etc., (even though this issue has been occurring on and off since way before safari extensions). I have tried clean installs of the OS in the past (only bringing in documents, pictures, music, and videos) and installing all software from scratch... To no avail.
    I also am a stickler when it comes to keeping the system and software up to date. And not running pirated anything (as it is not only legal, but dodgy).
    In either case if anyone has any ideas as to what might cause this I would be immensely grateful (as I now have a many hours of fun ahead restoring the system + boot camp + parallels and all the programs needed).
    As I mentioned initially in the post Opera does not have this issue, but Safari, Chrome, and Firefox does.
    Again, any help would be most welcome.
    With kind regards,
    Gunnar
    Should also point out I tried running Onyx with the full maintenance scripts + resetting the PRAM and even the PMU
    And forgot to mention that I'm restoring from backup now, but for future reference...

    Hi Carolyn,
    Thank you so much for your reply. I restored the system and all went well. But some good things aren't meant to last it seems The same issue reappeared. I tried your suggestion, but it did not solve the problem.
    One thing I did today before the issue appeared was to install software for my wacom bamboo tablet. After that the problem appeared. If it has something to do with wacom I do not know.
    Restoring the system again now as I need my Mac working tomorrow. And I will not be installing any wacom software for now. When I have more time I might reformat everything again...
    Another thing I did was to reactivate windows in parallels but that has been done in the past without this issue appearing.
    Thank you again for your reply.
    Kind regards,
    Gunnar

  • Color management for flash galleries

    I have recently found out that Flash 10 (currently in beta) supports color management (finally!). However, for it to work it needs to be enabled by the flash application itself. Therefore, I'd like to request the Lightroom team to enable color management for the LR2 flash web galleries.
    Thanks for reading!
    Simon

    Bill,
    I'm having the same problem.  My exported web galleries are all shifted to the red.
    Here's an example: http://venture-multimedia.com/photoshoots/jim/index.html
    The guy looks like he has a sunburn.  In lightroom he looks fine.  I checked on two diff computers and the web gallery looks red on both, yet in lightroom it looks fine.
    Just switched to Windows 7 and I'm wondering if that has somthing to do with it.
    Suggestions please?!?!?!

  • Newbee's question: Error connecting to the management server for the first time

    Dear all, I am very new to the oralce world and got stuck today the first time I install oracle 8i on my win2k pro.
    After the installation, I was trying to connect the Enterprise Manager Console for the first time, using the default user name sysman and password oem_temp (correct?). The problem is that I don't know exactly what is a management server, and what name it should be called. I named the database/sid name orarem, under D:\Oracle\admin\OraRem, does it have something to do with this issue?
    I only installed the oracle enterprise server edition 8.1.6.0.0, not the Client part, will that matter if I only wanna run oracle on my stand alone desktop as a testing procedure for now?
    Any help would be really appreciated!!

    Bingo!! I had been trying dumping various .plist files
    Not surprisingly i was a little hesitant about throwing the Airport folder in the bin.
    First thing I did was to check it had been replaced on restarting!
    Glad to say that "Check for updates" is now doing its thing.
    I don't know why it gave me such grief, I just felt it could develope into something nasty down the line.
    Thank you again.
    Unfortunately they don't seem to have a points system for this topic.
    Your fix should be available in Google from now on

  • Color management for flash player with hardware acceleration

    I have tested the color management for flash player 10.2 with and without hardware acceleration (GPU) on different PCs with different video cards.
    Videos that are played via flash without hardware acceleration on PC have proper color as designed in After Effects.
    When I switch on hardware acceleration, the color shifts, for example green becomes lighter, although grey values are OK. I have tried this by writing a  small Flash programme for playing a movie; I wrote two programmes one with color management as described in the article "Color correction in Flash Player" http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flash/quickstart/color_correction_as3.html and another one without color management. In both cases I got the same color shift when hardware acceleration was turned on. From the result I concluded that color management does not work when hardware acceleration is on.
    My question is: are there any plans to have color management for flash player with hardware acceleration (GPU) in the near future?
    We need to play complex high definition movies streaming through a high speed local area network that need hardware acceleration to avoid stuttering.

    Hi, LOL at my screen moniker. That's interesting that the FF beta has an Option for that. The only problem, is that I have heard that each browser must UNcheck the H.A. I'm sure you'll find out.
    Hope that works at least for FF. Let me know if you have time.
    I've been checking out Apple TV and Google TV. Just saved the links and some info, haven't had time to go further. I'd prefer Apple TV over Google tho.
    I have a 55" HD Sony/Blu-ray Surround Sound Speakers, etc. I hooked up the VGA cable for Internet, and WOW on the Screen/Monitor!! Now I'm thinking about the iPhone 4 with VZ too, on their pre-order list for 2/3/11!
    Hard to keep up with the Technology, moving faster today for some reason.
    We are under the Snow & Ice warning, getting it now. Hope I don't lose power! If so, I'll be offline for sure.
    If I find anything on that H.A. for IE, I'll let you know.
    Thanks,

  • A new Book: Color Management for Digital Photographers

    Ted Padova and Don Mason have published a new book: Color Management for Digital Photographers for Dummies (ISBN 978-0-470-04892-4).
    As the back cover of the manual states "This book is packed with examples to guide you through understanding color basics, correcting brightness and contrast, getting the exact tone and hue, and creating perfect prints - in full color, of course!" (with the tools available in PSE 4 and 5).
    I had the luck to benefit from the excellent experience and the gracious help of Don Mason for a color/brightness adjustment problem in a Dafodill photo that I did not know how to solve on my own. I look forward to learn much more from this book.
    Probably other PSE users could also be interested in this book.

    Yes, I've tried all of the options: Printer manages color, PSE manages color. All are the same dark prints.
    On another conversation on this forum, I read the following. Very discouraging to think that Adobe knows of this problem but won't give me any tech support because too much time has lapsed.
    I don't know what "plugs" are--sounds like this user figured out a way around it.
    Any advice?
    Thanks!
    Fran
    Re: Color mismatch EpsonR800 and Elements 6
    Adobe has admitted that there is a color management issue with PSE 6 for Mac. I have an Epson R1900 and I am now getting acceptable color-managed prints by allowing the Epson Printer driver to manage color management (ie; color management in PSE 6 turned off). The Epson Photoshop Plug In also works well with PSE6 and ICC profiles; however, I have yet to solve 2 problems with this particular plug in: (1) How to get the program to capture 3rd party ICC profiles and (2) how to print borderless prints. If anyone has seen a user guide for this particular plug in, I would be grateful to know how to download it.

  • I've tried to update my i-Tunes version after the site suggested I should following my i-Pad being plugged into it for the first time. The update seemed successful but the program would not open at all despite switching off the PC and re-starting several

    I’ve tried to update my i-Tunes version after the site suggested I should following my i-Pad Air being plugged into it for the first time. The update seemed successful but the program would not open at all despite switching off the PC and re-starting several times. I then tried wiping the original software from the computer and re-downloading from scratch. Each time I tried the download failed with a message saying “Service “Apple Mobile Device” failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services” At this stage, the only way forward was to “abort” the download. This I have done now four times and the same thing happens. When I did finally manage to get an i-Tunes shortcut on my desktop, the program wouldn’t open saying: “i-Tunes was not installed correctly. Please re-install i-Tunes. Error 7 (Windows error 193)” Any ideas to resolve this?

    Umm no not that i remember. It just randomly started happening. I reformatted the hard drive for mac (journaled) but it was working fine since i did it until now

  • I downloded iphoto 11 9.2 and when opened it for the first time and the program started to update my iPhoto library the file got corrupted. That has happened in the two macs I have (both of them rather new and updated to last Lion version 10.7.2).

    I downloaded Iphoto 11 9.2 from the apps store (was on iphoto '09 before version 8.x) and when opened it for the first time it tried to update my photo librery and ended up corupting it to the extreme that I had to get a backup from time capsule and downgrade my iphoto version. I spent yesterday 6 hours at the genius bar in an apple store and they were not able to provide me with any other solution. In the emantime, I have to forget about about photo streaming... Any idea, is this a bug that somebody knows how tp fix?

    In fairness, this isn't an issue in iPhoto 11 but one in your Library. Some file or other in there is damaged and that's what causes the crash during the upgrade.
    Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
    Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Setting up a cluster for the first time: newbie questions

    Any help appreciated with this situation:
              I'm trying to set up a cluster for the first time and running into
              issues (no big surprise). I'll outline my situation and pose questions
              as they arise. If/when I get things to work I'll post a step-by-step
              summary of what it took to get a simple cluster going.
              Here's what I have:
              machines:
              1 Windows 2000 machines with WL 6.1
              2 RedHat Linux machines with WL 6.1
              All machines are on the same Home LAN, can see each other, etc.
              IP addresses are:
              Windows box: 192.168.1.100
              Linux box 1: 192.168.1.102
              Linux box 2: 192.168.1.103
              servers:
              I've set up the Windows machine as my admin server, and set up
              a managed server on each Linux machine. I created a cluster that consists
              of the 2 Linux machines and deployed the web app and EJB to the cluster.
              The Windows machine is acting as a Proxy using ClusterServlet.
              The web application has been set as the Default Web Application on the
              two Linux machines. All 3 machines are listening on ports 80/443. I also
              set up session memory replication through the console.
              Application:
              I have an application that I package as an EAR file. I'm using it as a
              "reference" application designed to mimic a real world app as much as possible.
              The EAR file contains a web application that uses Struts. It also consists
              of a single Stateless Session Bean. The WAR file and EJB Jar are all
              packaged up into the EAR file. I've been able to run this application just
              fine on a single managed server on all 3 machines.
              The web application works fine, and it can invoke the EJB. I can also
              invoke the EJB from Java stand-alone clients. Struts works great. All is
              well with the world. Now I'm trying to "cluster-ize" this app using
              the environment described above and encountering issues.
              I've read the docs and followed the instructions according to the
              "Weblogic Bible" book. I can bring up all 3 servers and the Linux
              managed servers connect to the cluster just fine. I can also
              see the Struts messages in their logs which normally happens and tells me
              the webapp is initialized properly. The console tells me that the managed
              servers are running. I get no error messages starting up any of the serves.
              Here are the problems I am encountering.
              When I try to access the Web Application (through a browser on the
              Windows machine using http://localhost) I get the following error message:
              <Nov 19, 2002 6:44:33 AM EST> <Error> <HTTP> <HttpServer(1754841,null default ct
              x,admin) found no context for "/". This request does not match the context path
              for any installed web applications and there is no default web application confi
              gured.>
              Also, when I try to invoke the EJB through a stand-alone Java client,
              I get a JNDI lookup error on the EJB's home interface.
              Questions:
              Question1: I noticed when setting up the machines that console lets you
              define a "Machine" or a "Unix Machine". What's the difference? Should I
              define the Linux machines as Unix machines or machines, and what are the
              consequences of either choice?
              Question2:
              I'm not totally clear on how my web.xml should look to set up Struts,
              the ClusterServlet, and a servlet filter I'm using to test Servlet filters.
              Here is what I had before I tried to cluster and which works fine:
              <filter>
              <filter-name>MainFilter</filter-name>
              <filter-class>com.refapp.servlets.MainFilter</filter-class>
              <init-param>
              <param-name>myAttribute</param-name>
              <param-value>Foo</param-value>
              </init-param>
              </filter>
              <filter-mapping>
              <filter-name>MainFilter</filter-name>
              <url-pattern>/*</url-pattern>
              </filter-mapping
              <!-- Struts ActionServlet Configuration -->
              <servlet>
              <servlet-name>action</servlet-name>
              <servlet-class>org.apache.struts.action.ActionServlet</servlet-class>
              <init-param>
              <param-name>application</param-name>
              <param-value>refappstruts</param-value>
              </init-param>
              <init-param>
              <param-name>config</param-name>
              <param-value>/WEB-INF/struts-config.xml</param-value>
              </init-param>
              <init-param>
              <param-name>debug</param-name>
              <param-value>2</param-value>
              </init-param>
              <init-param>
              <param-name>mapping</param-name>
              <param-value>org.apache.struts.action.RequestActionMapping</param-value>
              </init-param>
              <load-on-startup>2</load-on-startup>
              </servlet>
              <servlet-mapping>
              <servlet-name>action</servlet-name>
              <url-pattern>*.do</url-pattern>
              </servlet-mapping>
              <welcome-file-list>
              <welcome-file>index.do</welcome-file>
              <welcome-file>index.jsp</welcome-file>
              <welcome-file>index.html</welcome-file>
              </welcome-file-list>
              (I have set up a "dummy" 0-length file called index.do that triggers
              Struts to go into its ActionServlet when first accessing the web site).
              Here is how I added ClusterServlet to web.xml:
              servlet>
              <servlet-name>ClusterServlet</servlet-name>
              <servlet-class>weblogic.servlet.internal.HttpClusterServlet</servlet-class>
              <load-on-startup>0</load-on-startup>
              <init-param>
              <param-name>defaultServers</param-name>
              <param-value>192.168.1.102:80:443|192.168.1.103:80:443</param-value>
              </init-param>
              <init-param>
              <param-name>DebugConfigInfo</param-name>
              <param-value>ON</param-value>
              </init-param>
              </servlet>
              <servlet-mapping>
              <servlet-name>InitServlet</servlet-name>
              <url-pattern>/servlet/InitServlet</url-pattern>
              </servlet-mapping>
              <servlet-mapping>
              <servlet-name>action</servlet-name>
              <url-pattern>*.do</url-pattern>
              </servlet-mapping>
              <servlet-mapping>
              <servlet-name>ClusterServlet</servlet-name>
              <url-pattern>/</url-pattern>
              </servlet-mapping>
              <servlet-mapping>
              <servlet-name>ClusterServlet</servlet-name>
              <url-pattern>*.html</url-pattern>
              </servlet-mapping>
              <servlet-mapping>
              <servlet-name>ClusterServlet</servlet-name>
              <url-pattern>*.jsp</url-pattern>
              </servlet-mapping>
              <servlet-mapping>
              <servlet-name>ClusterServlet</servlet-name>
              <url-pattern>*.do</url-pattern>
              </servlet-mapping>
              Clearly there is a problem with the Default Web application not being
              seen/mapped properly. Any chances my URL mappings for the filter servlet,
              Struts, and ClusterServlet are stepping on each other?
              With respect to the EJB, here is what my weblogic-ejb-jar looks like:
              <weblogic-ejb-jar>
              <weblogic-enterprise-bean>
              <ejb-name>Hello</ejb-name>
              <stateless-session-descriptor>
              <pool>
                   <max-beans-in-free-pool>100</max-beans-in-free-pool>
              </pool>
              <stateless-clustering>
              <stateless-bean-is-clusterable>true</stateless-bean-is-clusterable>
              <stateless-bean-load-algorithm>
              round-robin
              </stateless-bean-load-algorithm>
              <stateless-bean-methods-are-idempotent>
              true
              </stateless-bean-methods-are-idempotent>
              </stateless-clustering>
              </stateless-session-descriptor>
              <jndi-name>Hello.Home</jndi-name>
              </weblogic-enterprise-bean>
              I run this through ejbc and package everything up into the EAR file.
              However, I get a JNDI lookup failure when I try to access the Bean from
              a standalone Java client running on the Windows machine.
              Here is the jndi.properties file that I am using:
              java.naming.factory.initial=weblogic.jndi.WLInitialContextFactory
              java.naming.provider.url=t3://localhost:80
              Any ideas what I'm doing wrong here? I can post config.xml also if needed.
              Thanks in advance!
