Color newbie tmeline question...

When I send an hour long clip to Color the timeline shows a very small portion of the timeline, about two or three minutes. I don't seem to be able to zip around the timeline like I can in FCP. The interface seems to be "rigid" - kind of like the way I felt about DVD Studio Pro about 6 or seven years ago. Scaling the timeline also seems quite "clunky" to me, since I seem to have to zoom out far enough to have the entire clip in view in the timeline in order to move around a lot.....
Is there a tutorial somewhere that would help me through this?

The best tutorial to suggest would be to look around for ones on "prepping your project for COLOR", because your methodology is a bit suspect.
No experienced COLOR user in their right mind would ever send a one-hour clip.
If I'm reading this correctly, this is one single Quicktime, which COLOR will choke on. I'm surprised it didn't simply crash and put you out of your misery.
Accepted practice is to send media totaling somewhere in the vicinity of 20 minutes or so.. and NEVER use the split tool... razor the baked Quicktime (if that's what it is) on an FCP timeline and send that s that you get grade markers in COLOR that have been set in FCP and then can be revised a little more efficiently.
As far as navigating the COLOR timeline, use the +/- keys to zoom in and out, and expanding or contracting or scrolling along the sequence is a three-button mouse function -- also for expanding and contracting the layers. Expect it to be slow, though if you've got a lot of media or a CPU-intensive codec.

With the production release of SQL Developer Data Modeler I'd assume that this forum will draw a bunch of new users. Is there a better place to ask some pretty simple, newbie like questions that won't bother the more seasoned members?
For instance, I am working in a Rails environment, which has some stringent naming conventions, one of which is that all of the primary key columns are numeric and called "id", with the foreign key linked columns called <table_name>_id. When engineering a logical model to a relational model, the added foreign key columns are all "id#". Is there a way I can define a naming rule to keep me from having to redo the relation column names?
Also, we have a standard set of columns (mostly Rails related) which appear in every table. Can I define a generation rule which automatically includes these tables?

Newbie script question... consecutive numbers with update.

complete newbie type question... this is also my first post. ( I am using CS3)
does anyone have a script which can make it so I can add numbers into the text consecutively.
for example, if this is my text "the big fat dog sat on the very wide mat, but was then displaced by a unfriendly cat."
and I wanted to place a number 1, number 2, 3, etc at points in the text so it read, "the big fat dog1 sat on the very wide mat2, but was then displaced by a unfriendly cat3." but later wanted to add another number and have later numbers update themselves, so the text then said, "the big fat dog1 sat on the very wide mat2, but was then displaced3 by a unfriendly cat.4".
by inserting the three, the previous three became four.
Has anyone got something which might be useful in this regard.

Newbie XSan question - authenticating a computer from XSan Admin

Hello - I have a very newbie XSan question!
I have 2 computers that connect to an XSan. 1 I am having no problems with. The other I am unable to connect with.
When I look in XSan Admin the 2nd computer (the one that is not working) is not authenticated.
So I click on it and choose Authenticate. I enter what I know is an Admin username and password for the computer I am attempting to connect. The dot next to the computers IP turns green with 3 dots in it and then it turns gray again. It just does not connect.
What is the problem?
Is it licensing?

This Newbie Has Questions

Hi there. I am a newbie to Apple. I purchased the iBook last month and of course, when the MacBook (which had the features I wanted) came out, I rushed out and got one and I'm very pleased with my purchase - but I have a few "newbie" questions:
1) Printing on a PC based Linksys seems to be a nightmare. I can't get anything printed on the shared HP 2600N and HP1012 printers. I literally have to disconnect them from the PC and plug the USB directly to my MacBook to print. It seems like there should be a better, easier and MacFriendly way of doing this - anyone have an easy solution?
2) I'm going to purchase Windows XP so I can run my windows programs on this computer. Does anyone have any pre-installation advice?
3) I have a blackberry device that worked fine with my iBook, but does not work with my MacBook - any suggestions or is there a software compatibility patch?
4) I transferred everything from my old Mac to my new Mac with no problem. How can I migrate my contacts from Entourage to the Address Book?
5) I notice that sometimes the MacBook "stalls" or doesn't work fast in some functions...is it just me - I expect the machine to jump quickly...but sometimes I get that annoying pinwheel when opening programs.

The problem is probably a driver issue.

You may need to use a third-party driver such as the HPIJS drivers or the Gimp-Print drivers, but this is not the case with all printers.

Ensure you get a full version (not an upgrade version) and it comes with XP SP2 already.
Do not install Boot Camp on a critical machine and make regular backups of your data, this is beta software and there are bugs and issues.

I ended up uninstalling every java this and that.. and tomcat.
Then installing only the j2sdk1.4.0_03 SDK.
Then set up JAVA_HOME for all users and modified the path with full path to the bin (c:\j2sdk1.4.0_03\bin)
Lastly I reinstalled tomcat and, voila, everything was working.
It can be quite maddening when you THINK you did everything by the boook and something doesn't work. When you replied and confirmed that I was on the right track.. uninstalling and trying yet again became les frustrating an option.

Newbie wireless question (slightly off-topic)

I didn't want to post this here as it's not entirely an Airport-specific question. I posted this to the iBook forums, but nobody there has answered so my apologies if this is not welcome here. (Any moderators can remove it if that's the case.)
I've been using computers extensively for over a decade, but I'm a total newbie to wifi. I just set up a wireless network in my house and would appreciate some advice/feedback.
My main concerns are whether or not my network is reasonably secure. I know there is no such thing as perfect security, but I don't know if what I've done is good enough or not.
I don't have an Airport base station, but I do have a D-Link Airplus G and an Airport card in my iBook. I have WEP set up on the router and I have enabled MAC filtering, listing only my desktop and my iBook, excluding all others from the network.
I'm fairly certain that nobody in my neighborhood is going to get into my machines this way or be able to sniff my network data stream, but am I right in assuming that nobody can "piggyback" on my Internet connection too? Presumably, if everyone but my own machines are MAC-filtered and kept out, then the Internet connection is also protected. Is that how it works?

WEP and MAC filtering are better than nothing, but you can do better. These are my suggestions:
1. Use WPA with a pre-shared key (PSK) and TKIP encryption on your Netgear router, along with an alphanumeric passphrase of at least eight characters not found in any dictionary. The equivalent setting on your Mac is "WPA Personal". Unlike WEP security (which an expert can crack in under half an hour), WPA security is currently unhackable by any practical means as long as you use a non-dictionary passphrase. One last point - WPA security requires all your wireless Macs to be running MacOS 10.3 or newer.
2. MAC filtering is (these days) essentially useless as a wireless security method. Using "packet sniffing" of traffic on your wireless network to find out what MAC addresses are used by computers on your network, and a PC that allows its MAC address to be cloned so that it is identical to the MAC address of one your own wireless computers (which is possible with most PC wireless network adapters) even an amateur hacker can defeat MAC address filtering in minutes.
By the way - I don't think your posted message here is off topic. In my opinion, the Airport discussion forums are the best place to post any questions related to usage of wireless networks. Questions of this nature are virtually never specific to any Mac model.

Color profile problem/question.

These two exports of the same file were taken on my spouse's D300s, and are good examples of a profile problem I cannot seem to solve. This is the identical problem I also experience on the Nikon D700 and D3. The following was exported with the "Camera Standard" profile, and notice the yellow sun reflection on the door panels:
The following was exported with a xrite generated lightroom profile. Notice the better overall contrast, but also the horrendous unnatural yellow on the same door:
This difference causes all sorts of distortion in natural animal hair that contains any red-orange. I use these doors because they are such a stark example. Any attempts to correct with the WB will usually result in too much blue elsewhere. Also I have created many test profiles under many light conditions (both manually and from LR), and they all cause this problem in all three cameras. This is not a matter of one bad cameral, or one erroneously created profile.
I have two questions: Does this example show up well enough to see what I am talking about? If so, can anyone speculate as to the problem or solution? Even guesses would be appreciated since I am out of my own, and not expert in this sort of thing. Thanks!

George, thank you for this information. I have a couple of things for you to try and another question. The ColorChecker Passport color patches are small, so I would suggest trying to reshoot a calibration image with the ColorChecker Passport in the center and filling at least 1/3 of the picture width. In the image you provided the ColorChecker Passport is about 1/8 the image width and far left of center. I know, I know, it should not matter, but give it a try. This is what I'm doing to create camera profiles for all three of my camera bodies (Canon 300D, 600D, 5D MKII), and I have not had a single problem with "color matching" using this procedure AND what I will describe next.
Concerning white balance procedure you say:
Using the grey card of the same product placed just outside the subject crop.
I assume you are referring to the large 60% reflectance white balance card on one side of the ColorChecker Passport, but you do not mention how you set white balance. I suggest using the LR white balance eyedropper tool with the smaller 80% reflectance gray scale patch on the ColorChecker Classic target side. This is the 2nd patch from the left bottom in your picture right next to the brightest 90% white patch. Two reasons for doing this! A higher reflectance patch reduces the influence of camera noise in the image with the LR 5 x 5 pixels eyedropper tool. Here's a LR forum post with a heated discussion on these issues (or lack thereof): http://forums.adobe.com/thread/854734?tstart=60 The second purely empirical reason is the "Classic" target side provides me with more accurate white balance than using the larger 60% card. Perhaps this is a defect with my ColorChecker Passport target, but I don't know.
When setting white balance with the LR eyedropper tool I suggest taking at least five (5) samples of the 80% patch. I use the center, TL, TR, BR and BL corner areas of the patch. Do not use any reading that has a large variation from the others. Please remember that the eyedropper tool is sampling a very small 5 x 5 (25 pixels) area, and image noise or a target paint defect can give you a bogus reading. Write down the temp and tint for each of the five (5) readings, add them, and divide by five to get the "average" white balance temp and tint. Enter the temp and tint values manually into the white balance tool. I create a user preset for each profile which contains only the ColorChecker created camera profile and manually adjusted white balance settings.
I would also suggest you check the readings of all six (6) grayscale patches for neutrality (R=G=B) using your new camera profile and white balance settings. I have found in some cases using the 65% reflectance patch (3rd patch in) provides the most neutral “overall” white balance setting for the six (6) patches. This is despite the fact it contains more camera noise than the 80% patch next to it. Again, this observation is purely empirical – I am not writing a scientific thesis! It works for me and hopefully it will get you closer to what you want.
One thing I am going to do tomorrow is borrow a friends color checker to rule out the possibility mine is defective. It doesn't look defective, but the problem is so consistent.
This is a very good idea! Having worked in a manufacturing environment for over 45 years, trust me when I tell you defective product from even the largest company ends up in the consumer’s hands. Please let us know what you find.

COLOR NEWBIE

Hi all. I am editing a project shot on minidv in 24fps. I imported using the standard NTSC setting and edited in final cut pro 6.0.3 in a 29.97 timeline. I am used the "send to color" option and was fine. I want to know what project settings I should use. I am very confused and can't seem to get a straight answer. Sorry this is probably really simple. I only get the option of using the codec of 422, 422HQ 8bit uncompressed, and 10bit uncompressed. Which one should I use? Also what render setting can i use to have the highest quality. I will be going back to DVCam with this. Thank you!

While Color is a great app with a very intuitive workflow, I would highly recommend reading through the Color Manual, as well as invest in the Color Apple Pro Training Series book, or even Ripple Training or Lynda.com, before you dive in too far here.
For your particular question, I would like to direct your attention to page 84 of the Color Users Manual.
You should be fine with the ProRes 422 (HQ) codec for rendering.

11i Java Color Scheme set_canvas_property question

Hi,
I've modified the custom.pll to change a canvas color to red based on some data criteria using the set_canvas_property command. I want to set it canvas back to the original color when they create a new record. My question is how can I programmatically figure out what the default color format is to change it back?
It seems that I should use fnd_profile.value but I'm not clear how I can use this. The system profile for Java Color Scheme is blank for site, application, responsibility, and user.

Newbie saving question in Illustrator

I know this is a newbie question. I designed a logo in Illustrator. Is there a way to save just the logo for exporting into other applications (ie Pagemaker or Photoshop) without having the white artboard?

I don't know Pagemaker but with Photoshop I simply select all, copy and then paste in Photoshop - transparency will be maintained. If you paste as a Smart Object you retain the ability to edit the Illustrator artwork in Illustrator and update the PS file.

Color Settings (Profile) Question

-I am using CS4 on a PC.
-A friend of mine does high end printing.
-A couple of months ago he had me set my color settings to ProPhotoRGB. In the haste they were not set back. To sRGB IEC61966-2.1 (sRGB for later reference). Innocently I thought working in ProPhoto (yes I had the choice when opening a file which profile to use) would somehow enhance the photo. Now I know better, but…..
-I manipulated many photos using the ProPhoto setting, but in some cheap, quick printing to a universal machine most consumers would have processing done with, they looked horrible, to say the least.
-We determined the problem to be the setting and I have switched it back to sRGB.
Question:
Can I open the old processed photos and change the Color setting (EDIT-> Assign Profile) and be good to go, or are the ProPhoto colors embedded in the photos and I need to start from scratch with my RAW files and convert to new jpg files and move forward?
I tried opening one of the bad jpg and converting the color setting/profile and even opened a psd I had created of a collage and saved it as a jpg but in Bridge the color still looks bad. (PSD color is fine).
If I have to start over, so be it. It’s only months, not years and I will have learned something. I would however, like to speed up the process an easier way, if possible.

Yes you should be able to just change as you stated. ProPhotoRGB is a wider gaumet color range so some color shifting may be evident. This gets into a very complex subject, or which I am not an expert.

Color Profile Setting question

Hi! I am new to the forum and have a strange question. I shoot with a Canon 40 in Adobe rgb color space. I import all the images into lightroom and sometimes I edit in PS (CS4). When I choose "edit in PS4" from lightroom, the color profile is Pro Photo and not adobe RGB.
My question is: can I set up PS to automatically convert any profile to Adobe RGB? I thought I did in edit/color spaces but tried it and it's back to pro photo colorspace again.
Help?

Check your Color Settings in Photoshop and select "Ask when opening" in your RGB settings. It could be that ProPhoto RGB is setup as your Photoshop RGB workspace, but I think you can change it to Adobe RGB there. You might also be able to set it in Bridge as your default RGB colorspace. I like the option of using "Ask when opening" in case I want to use ProPhoto on certain types of files and Adobe RGB on others.

Newbie Dreamweaver Question

Hi all,
Im very new at designing websites, in fact I just designed my
first real one, I learned from the "Studio 8: Training From The
Source" book, which I went over and took notes twice. The question
I have is probably a very very simple one:
How do I change the color of a particular link? Not the whole
page properties, just a link that I have in a certain section of
the site that is on a blue background (thus a blue link will not
work :-P)
Also, I was going to ask a good way to make a template in
photoshop and then make an image map or use it for a site, since Im
proficient in Photoshop, but then I though "would I slice it up
just like the site I just made?" If thats the case, please let me
know? And do I make the buttons separate from the site? Any
tutorials on this out there?

If it's just one link, the best way is to make a class, give
it the CSS
properties that you want (color, size, etc.) and then apply
the class where
you want it. The CSS would look like:
.redlink {
color: red; (or use the hex #ff0000)
Then you can select the link and apply the class to the link.

You can .. I wouldn't recommend it. A site that is made up of
image slices
is not nearly as functional or sleek as one created with well
placed images
and html and css code. I usually make what I want in
Photoshop cause I find
it so easy to things around during the process (I end up with
60 layers
sometimes) and then I do any slicing and optimizing in
Fireworks.
However, I never port the whole page to slices .. just a few
parts that need
to be created in images. I then use the Fireworks file as
more of a guide
and create the actual page in Dreamweaver.

You can make buttons (image) in Photoshop, Fireworks ..
whatever, but I
recommend creating the rollover code in Dreamweaver rather
than an image
program. OR you can make buttons with CSS and then it's easy
to create the
states of the button in CSS rather than using images. I do
that whenever I
can.

Dumb newbie hardware question! :)

Hi folks,
I'm new to the world of the blackberry and am just about to take the plunge with an unlocked sim-free BB Bold to use in the UK on Vodafone. I have read about the software differences between BIS and BES and would be going for a BIS set-up. My dumb newbie question is does the hardware come in BES and BIS versions or not?

hello, about BIS and BES it's explained on the website but it's clear that if someone sums it up for you it will be easier...
so BES is a type of contract between a company and Blackberry. The company IT buy computers, put Blackberry servers, and buy a fleet of Blackberry Devices for the people in the company to use them and get email through the Blackberry servers.
BIS is a type of contract between a common person and a carrier. The consumer goes to the carrier, and buys a Blackberry device, and a BIS plan that will enable him/her to :
phone/sms/mms
receive emails that have been configured on the BIS site
do data things if you subscribe to (like browse the web)
You can buy a Blackberry from a carrier that has a deal with RIM (the company that sells Blackberries). Or you can buy a blackberry alone, and then go and contact a carrier that has a deal with RIM.
