Color noise in highlights in 16 bit comp (DSLR footage)

Hi,
I'm trying out a workflow to get the most out of my DSLR footage and it results in some weird color noise (not sure what to call it) as shown in the picture.
Here's the workflow I'm using: https://vimeo.com/39979623
Basically, I import the DSLR footage into a 16 bit project, apply Red Giant Denoiser and dither (noise). At this stage the footage looks fine.
I then render using Avid DNxHD as video codec and change colors to trillions. If I play that exported footage in VLC, there is no noise.
I re-import that footage into AE (same or new project in 16 bit) and now the highlights have gone weird and it also persists when I render the comp to h264. If I change it to a 8 bit project, that problem disappears.
Could anyone explain what's happening?
Thanks!
I'm using CS6.

Apologies
After Effects CS6 11.0.4.2
Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3930K CPU @ 3.20GHz, 3201 Mhz, 6 Core(s), 12 Logical
16GB RAM
GeForce GTX 680 (driver version 347.52)
I have installed NVIDIA GPU Computing Toolkit 6.0 but I think there is a new version - I have no idea if that has anything to do with this but I'll update it tomorrow in any case.

  • Color Code or Highlight Certain Events?

I may be the only person who wants this, but does anyone know of a way to color code the event names in iPhoto? Similar to the way you can color code folders in the finder. Even if it's just an on/off highlight.
The long story is I've been scanning and importing hundreds of photos from my "pre-digital" days. They all need a bit of tweaking (sometimes just a crop, but often a color adjustment, and resetting the dates since they automatically are given the date of import, not when I took the picture) so I've been slowly going through them, event by event, to do it. But I'd love to "highlight" all the event titles and then when they are tweaked, remove the highlight. Allowing me to do a quick scan through the events to see how many I have done and still have to do.
I've tried some googling to see if there might be a script or something, but I'm not sure what words I should use besides color code or highlight events. And they didn't turn up anything.
Long shot, but I figure if anyone has tried to do this, the helpful people here would know. If not, ce la vie.
    Thanks,
    Gina

    No
You could assign a keyword to the photos when yo import them and make a smart album on that keyword - then remove the keyword as you "tweak" the scans so they drop out of the smart album

  • Black bar in 32-bit comps!?

    Hi,
Most of my work I do as 8-bit comps in Ae. However, I recently wanted to play with some overbrights in Trapcode 3D Stroke, which can only be realised in a 32-bit composition.
Whenever I watch the comp, scrub through it it looks OK, but as soon as I play it as a RAM preview, a black bar appears at the top 3rd of the screen (and no, there's no mask or solid covering that area). I thought I had to update my nVidia drivers (I have a Quadro FX 4800-card), but alas, to no avail.
This also works its way through the rendered out versions.
The problem persists (or perhaps worsens) whenever I switch the comp back to 16-bit color space:
Now the top half of the screen is repeated and divided up into a repetitive cycle.
Only when I switch the comp back to 8-bit, the problem is solved.
In this comp, I did use a sequence of JPEG (8-bit files). But the problem seems to exist in any new comp or project set to 16 or 32-bit.
    I have a 64-bit windows 7 professional quad-core workstation with 18GB of RAM.
    Any ideas?

I thought I had to update my nVidia drivers (I have a Quadro FX 4800-card), but alas, to no avail.
But you're still using OpenGL?! Why not simply turn it off? AE can happily go without it. You're right on the money as far as I can tell - from what it looks like, it's a graphics card issues. Either a color space conversion issue on teh graphics card or some weird stuff with shader programs not being executed fully. Hard to tell, but as a start realyl do try to turn off OpenGL and then look into your driver config. Many times the latest driver is not the best one, so try an older driver version...

  • Weird Color Noise in CC

What is causing the colored noise in the above image?  This appears before I do any editing.  When I import the image from Lightroom 5.
I turn on the Gamut Warning, and it disappears.  D'uh, I know.  But then, obviously, the gray from the Gamut Warning occupies parts of the image.
I open the image as a 16 bit PSD.
    Any suggestions?  Thank you.

While I tend to agree with Jeff that an extreme adjustment or something like that has left you with enhancement of color differences between adjacent small areas of the image, there's no way anyone can really comment meaningfully on what you're seeing without access to your original raw data.  Do you have an image file you can share online?
Retrace your steps, and start with looking carefully the preview when you're developing the image...  Do you see the problem there?
Did you enhance the shadow areas of the image extremely?  There's only so much you can dig out of the shadows, even with the most modern cameras.

  • PV2010 Color Noise Reduction Robs Dark Tones

    No pun intended.
I thought at first it was the raw-conversion/de-mosaicing, but its turned out to be the color noise reduction.
Here is a the latest example of a picture that looks better in PV2003 than PV2010 no matter what I do, because of loss of clarity / contrast / dark-tones resulting from the new Color Noise Reduction algorithm. Note: This loss can not be restored using clarity or contrast sliders.
This probably ought to be a feature request: A slider that controls the coarser aspects of color noise reduction (color waves or clarity/contrast) versus the most localized aspects (color specs). In this instance, just getting rid of the specs without trying to reduce the waves might leave the dark tones(?) - Something like that. In any case, there is room to improve color noise reduction so that it leaves the dark tones / contrast / clarity in certain cases like this.
(Its a 100% crop of a section of a fish under water)
    PV2003:
    PV2010:
The difference is striking when viewing the whole photo from afar...
PS - I just discovered that minimizing noise reduction will maintain the dark tones better - I've therefore added down-throttling of color noise reduction to my PV2003  -> PV2010 practice.

    dorin_nicolaescu wrote:
Luminosity Contrast slider also helps maintain some darker tones.
    Indeed it do.
And, last but maybe (or maybe not) least, one can cheat a bit at the end and add some grain, to give the illusion of greater detail / texture. So, if you really want to preserve full detail when converting high ISO shots from PV2003 to PV2010, you need to:
    1. Crank up the luminance noise reduction detail slider pretty darn high (if not all the way up).
    2. Crank up the luminance noise reduction contrast slider pretty darn high (if not all the way up).
    3. Minimize color noise reduction amount.
    4. Crank up the color noise reduction detail slider fairly darn high (not all the way up! - color artefacts - bleh).
    5. Maybe add a touch of grain (pretty darn low).
(I've left out the luminance NR amount slider and sharpening because they are the more obvious ones).
I'm guessing I'm not the first person to fall into the trap of trying to recover detail lost by noise reduction by decreasing luminance noise reduction amount and increasing sharpening detail (and maybe amount too), and winding up right back where you started - too much noise. The detail/contrast sliders of the noise reduction controls really work a lot better for that, and minimizing color noise reduction is also a hot tip for you detail junkies.
I hope I'm not the last person on this forum to realize what is now seeming sort of obvious to me, whilst everyone has a good laugh...
(I had previous just left color noise reduction and detail, plus luminance NR contrast at their defaults (I discovered the importance of the lum.NR detail slider long ago...) - but not anymore. It has helped me to articulate all this - hope it helps somebody else too..........

  • Color Noise reduction with BxW

Just wanted to share what I have seen so far with this:
I sometimes use extreme HSL shifts with BxW images to achieve the tonal separation that I am looking for. This can lead to splotchyness, if taken toooo far. I just installed 1.4.1 and tried the color noise reduction filter for this (it was my most desired feature in the 1.4 update)
As of 5 minutes of playing with it I can say it works. It is not perfect, and it does cause a very slight softening of detail (very slight) But it definitely does help to remove a good bit of the aforementioned splotches.

Maybe this is snobbish, if so I apologize. I know that topics go off base sometimes...but this conversation has nothing to do with the topic I started. It should really have been it's own topic (for more than one reason. Maybe others need the info about slide shows, but would not look at this due to it's title).
Except for being about noise reduction it has nothing to do with what I wanted to hear other users comment on: The use of the color noise reduction slider with BxW images in 1.4.1
Again sorry if this is rude of me. I don't belong to too many forums and really don't know what the proper etiquette is here.

  • Color noise/dithering with MacPro DVI output

    Hello everybody,
to describe my problem/question I have to give you some additional information.
I am working for a company that produces KVM extenders. One of our products is an digital extender system which enables the transmission of standard computer signals (keyboard, video, mouse) via CAT cable over distances up to 140 meters.
In combination with a MacPro (MacPro 4,1, Mac OS X 10.6.5), this extender shows some "peculiarities" when transmitting images.
The mouse does not move properly at our receiver module; the cursor stutters at the screen.
In this constellation, however, almost the complete bandwidth is required for image transmission. In order to generally avoid this problem, we use a compression procedure to transmit data. Usually, only image changes instead of full images are transmitted. This method saves bandwidth and results in a stutter-free image. In our case, the compression procedure cannot be applied due to the fact that the MacPro constantly displays a stuttering image.
In order to clarify this problem we have done some research which I am going to explain in the following.
The tested graphics cards (ATI Radeon HD 4870 and GeForce GT 120) do not provide static screen content at the digital DVI output, but create a constant image/color noise/dithering.
Since the compression procedure cannot be applied (only full images are transmitted), the performance at higher resolutions is rather low. This is especially inconvenient for the user because this failure is invisible/irreproducible and there seems to be no possibility to disable this color noise.
In order to make the color noise visible, we used a screen-capture tool to produce several images of a standard desktop of a Mac OS X installation.
We took a closer look at these images and realized that the green background does not consist of one RGB color value, but of slightly deviating color values. In order to highlight the different color values, we used a graphic tool and colored the color values with more differing colors.
Now the color noise is clearly visible. When we looked at the same image with a delay in time, we realized that the color noise was not static but seemed to appear rather randomly. The colors deviate and a stuttering image is displayed!
The crosscheck against a background without color (white) shows that the color noise does not occur and the image performance of our extenders has evidently improved.
    Now my actual question:
Does anyone know how to disable this dithering within Mac OS X?
Thank you in advance for taking the time to read this and maybe give me some hinds to solve the problem.

    Hey Shane
I hate to go back to an old topic, but i need help.
I took your advice and bought the Blackmagic Thunderbolt Intensity Shuttle. I have the thunderbolt cable coming out of my iMac and into the Blackmagic box. Out of there I have the RGB cable going to my monitor, however I have no signal. I tried looking into contacting Blackmagic, but no luck. I thought I would ask you, since you seemed to have some knowledge.

  • Auto Noise Compenstation and color noise

    Hi,
I just took a closer look at my Canon 1D Mark III Raw files in Aperture regarding noise at low and high iso.
If I go into RAW Fine Tuning and turn off the "Auto Noise Compensation" I can see much less color noise in dark areas of the photos.
This is also somehow visible at iso 1600, but also at iso 200 if you look especially at the dark areas.
    Is this a bug?
I can compensate the color noise a little bit by bosting up the Moire and Radius to maximum in the Raw Fine Tuning.
    Thanks
    JO

Just having a quick look at this and i no longer see the option. If i find out why i will let you know. I'm sure i have seen it there in the past.

Adobe Acrobat XI Standard to 11.0.10 I have lost the basic colors of the highlighting tool. How do I fix this?

    Hi,
It appears that this was a bug that was introduced in the latest update. Others have been able to resolve this issue by using the Acrobat Cleaner tool to uninstall and then reinstall Acrobat. You might try this if you have a few spare moments.
And can you please share the problem PDF  which was working correctly in the earlier version.

  • How to change the color of text highlight

I'm trying to select and highlight certain text in the PDF. Here's my sample code. I want to change the color of the highlighted text. Something similar to what the Highlight Text tool does in acrobat.
    HiliteEntry hilite;
    hilite.offset = 10;  //Highlight the tenth word

    PDDoc currentPDDoc = AVDocGetPDDoc(currentAVDoc);

    AVPageViewDrawNow(currentPageView);
    AVDocShowSelection (currentAVDoc);
    PDPageRelease (pdPage);
If this is not possible, at least can I change the font color or underline the text?
    Appreciate any help!

Thanks a lot for the help so far. So I was successfully able to crate a highlight annotation from text selection. Here's my code, if anyone else get similar questions.

  • Adobe Photoshop CC, problem with color noise/pixelation on the monitor display

After downloading Adobe Photoshop CC, my images come in with color noise/pixelation on the monitor display. I've tried checking the color space preferences, but this doesn't help. I didn't have this problem before. Is there anything else I can check? There's no problem with LR, just Photoshop.

My performance settings are: Available RAM 10905 MB/using 7633 MG (70 percent); cache levels 4, history 20, cache tile size 1024K. However, I noticed under Graphics processer settings, it is set on Advanced Drawing Mode - perhaps this should be changed to Normal or Basic Mode? Your help is very much appreciated.

    Hi
I am trying to change the color of the highlight when hovering over answers in the quiz.  My companies standard font color is grey and so is the highlight when i hover answers.
Is it possible to change this?

No, it is (still) not possible to change that hover color, not even in CP8.0.1. I recommend to enter a feature request: Adobe - Feature Request/Bug Report Form

  • How do I remove color noise?

I have an image saved as a psd file with a high amount of color noise resulting from shooting at a film speed of 800. I have created a layer for a face in the image and a layer for the inverse (the remainder of the image). Can I reduce this noise using a tool in PSE7? I have tried the color noise reduction filter on each layer, but it seems to have no effect despite my playing with the adjustment sliders. The ultimate print of this image will be about 16"x24".

Thanks for this solution... exactly what I am searching for...

I recently tried to use the adjustment brush to add som color to white/highlights, without success . I have learned that the color chosen for the adjustment brush will mix with the underlaying colors. The surrounding areas were colored as expected, however apperently no effect on the white/blown highlights. Am I doing anything wrong?

I did this in LR. There's no detail at all in the window with or without Recovery set to 100.Here Recovery is set to 0.

  • Subtitle track turns monitor window into color noise?!

As soon as I added a subtitle track to my encore 1.5 project, the monitor window turns into colored noise.
    http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/4373720_VBrbJ/
The video noise seems to be an upside down image (of a performer on stage).
If I play the video, it turns normal, but the audio track sometimes play normal, sometimes it becomes a constant sine wave.
    What's going on?

A work around is to remove the transcode. However, as I add more subtitle into the track, I run into a "out of memory" pop up. Subsequently, the cursor (red line) redraw leaves behind some un-erased lines, and the bottom border of the subtitle track sometimes is not drawn. Drag-resizing the subtitle also does not redraw until the mouse is released.
Did I really run out of memory? I have 2G on this machine. Or is this an encore config issue? I looked but did not find any memory configuration options.
