Color of the checkboxes in Printer Setup Utility

I've noticed that for enabled printers, some checkboxes are bright blue while others are gray. What's the difference and the significance?

There could be a couple of explanations,
If the default printer as well as other printers are set up on a print server.
Depending on who and how it was set-up.
There could be 3 or 4 printers listed that people on the network can see.
The printer that is checked is the default printer.
The reason it is grayed and may not be changed is probably because the Administrator set up read only to those on the network and the others may be for backup or never removed from the server, There could be several things, I suggest you speak with your System Administrator, for clarification on the set-up. Cheers Don

  • Printer Setup Utility Add Button NOT working

    Whenever I press the ADD button in the printer setup utility, nothing happens. The butten darkens as I press it but, no dialog box appears to add a new printer. The system console shows the following:
    2006-06-20 15:32:47.850 Printer Setup Utility[531] * -[FireWireBrowser startBrowsing]: selector not recognized [self = 0x594b0d0]
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

    Try downloading Pacifist http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/6812 and put in your Tiger Install DVD. Then click "Open Apple Install Packages" (which will only work if you put in the install DVD). Then search the folders for Printer Setup Utility and click Install. I believe it is in one of the top folders. You may have to go a little deep, but it isn't too hard to find. Good luck!

  • Printer setup utility crashes

    I am running 10.4.8 on my iMac G5. Up until a few days ago I was successfully using two network printers that I have in my home. One is HP Photosmart 3310. Suddenly it stopped working, and I uninstalled and reinstalled and updated the software and drivers countless times. I kept getting a "printer not supported" message. Now when I try to install ANY printer I get the following message midway through the process in printer setup utility:
    The application printer setup utility quit unexpectedly.
    Mac OS X and other applications are not affected
    Click reopen to open the application again. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple.
    Can somebody help me please??

    I think you left out some details-
    The Photosmart 3310 is a USB printer, so to make it a network printer you are sharing it? From a Mac?
    Here are some generic troubleshooting steps to try:
    Repair permissions (Disk Utility).
    Delete Print Prefs - search for (File>Find) files that start with com.apple.print and delete them all and reboot.
    Reset Printing System (new in Tiger) - In Printer Setup, click this menu item found just above Quit Printer Setup.
    If there is a downloadable Combination Updater from Apple, use it to re-Update OS X.
    Try Printer Setup Repair from www.fixamac.net.
    Use a Disk Utility like Disk Warrior to repair the HD, or start from the Install DVD to use Disk Utility to repair the hard drive.

  • Epson C88 and Printer Setup Utility

    Trying to add Epson c88 to eMac system 10.3.9/800/512. Repaired permissions, installed drivers from included CD, restarted, repaired permissions. c88 does not show in Printer Setup Utility, though info's being exchanged between printer and eMac since Epson Printer Utiity recognizes the c88 and can test ink levels, head alignment, etc. No printer (not even an old c80) shows up in the printer list, so no printer can be added.
    Went to Epson web site, downloaded another version of the drivers and installed same; same result - nada. Nothing shows up in the Printer Setup Utility. All cables are in working order. Weird, no?
    Checked w/ Epson and they're pretty sure since Epson Printer Utility can be accessed, the problem's w/ the Printer Setup Utility; they suggested I call Apple.
    Called Apple but $49.95 to try and find the problem (half the cost of the printer?) seemed untenable.
    Can anyone offer insight?

    Okay mrthuse,
    I have a Epson C86, and this is the procedure I would use. I think I've changed the references to the C86, but if not, I believe the procedure for the C88 would be basically the same.
    * Download the most current driver from Epson: Printer Driver v2.5bA.
    * Before moving the folder & files listed below, to a "Temporary Epson Trash
    Folder", open "Printer Setup Utility" and delete the C88.
    * "Quit' "Printer Setup Utility"
    * Move the files (Posted in Capitals) to the "Temporary Epson Trash Folder" on the Desktop
    HD > Applications >
    EPSON PRINTER UTILITY (Alias)
    HD > Users > Your Home > Library > Preferences >
    COM.EPSON.IJPRINTER.UTILITY.PLIST
    COM.APPLE.PRINT.CUSTOMPRESETS.PLIST
    COM.APPLE.PRINT.PRINTCENTER.PLIST
    COM.APPLE.PRINT.PRINTERPROXY.INTERNAL_MODEM.PLIST
    COM.APPLE.PRINT.PRINTINGPREFS.PLIST
    HD > Library > Printers >
    EPSON (Folder) Only move this folder if you have no other
    Epson products
    I also had a "OS X booklet.pdf" (Epson) that I had saved in my "Documents" folder. You will get a new one. After the installation, I replaced it. You may not have saved your original one. It's no big deal, there's really not much in it, In fact I don't remember ever opening it, before today!
    * Quit ALL running Applications
    * "Repair Permissions" using "Disk Utility" in the "Utilities" folder
    * Dig out your Epson C88 "Start Here" instruction quick sheet, for reference
    * Unplug the USB cable from the Mac & then from the C88
    * Re-attach the USB cable to the C88 & then from the Mac
    * Turn on your C88
    * Double click on: "epson11510.sea.hqx" to unzip
    * Double click on: "epson11510.sea" to expand
    * Follow the prompts & instructions
    * When the "Vise" installer opens in a window, double click it to start the install
    * When the installation is complete, turn off the printer & restart your Mac.
    * "Repair Permisions" again
    * Turn on the C88
    * Open "Printer Setup Utility"
    * "You have no printers available" will appear. Click "Add"
    * Select "Epson USB" in the contextual menu
    * Click on "Stylus C88" to highlight
    * Add "Page Setup:" select "All", from the contextual menu
    * Click "Add"
    * Quit "Printer Setup Utility"
    The images below, that are left on the "Desktop", can be trashed, unless you prefer to keep the installer.

  • Why doesn't the HP printer show up in the printer setup utility?

    Can't understand why the HP2100 TN laserjet printer that is networked(ethernet) via a Snow basestation does not automatically show up in my list of printers. I also downloaded HP's drivers for it.
    My boyfriend's Powerbook running 10.3 is able to automatically see it, and it showed up as "shared" on my computer when his laptop is up and running. I tried Appletalk etc. He got it running using IP printing and having the IP address, but he told me it should have just showed up.
    I'm new to the Mac so I don't understand this. According to the config page he printed Appletalk is active on the printer its selected on my networking page.

  • The application Printer Setup Utility quit unexpectedly

    Hi All,
    I'm using 10.4.11, trying to add a printer. In 'Default Browser', I click on 'More Printers', and I receive the following error, The application Printer Setup Utility quit unexpectedly.
    Done all the basics, reset permissions, updated latest software, no help.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks.

    To The Apple Discussion Boards!
    Did you reboot your computer after repairing permissions & installing? If so, trash the com.apple.print.PrintCenter.plist file & restart your computer.
    Please post back the results.

  • Print centre in 10.4.8 is that the print setup utility ?

    where is the print centre in 10.4.8 is that the print setup utility ?

    I have just added a Dymo Turbo Twin LabelWriter to my G-5 running 10.4.8. I am using the latest Label Writer software and driver.
    Problem: Yesterday it failed to work. I found a second duplicate driver for this printer on my printer list. After I deleted one it worked fine and contiuned to do so until I shut down the computer and started up again. Once again a second duplicate driver was found on my drop down menu and the machine will not function with duplicate drivers. I deleted the second driver again and once again the machine works.
    I deleted the entire software that came with the LabelWriter and reinstalled using the uninstall feature on the disc and searching using Find. Same old problem and I continue to reproduce a second driver everytime I restart. I am thinking that perhaps there is something I am not deleting but I do not know where to look???? I have found two Dymo items in Preferences (Com.dymo.dls.Shell.Plist & Com.dymo.dymoreg.Plist) but do not know if I can delete them and what they do.
    I have never heard of a Mac reproducing drivers so clearly If i erased all the dymo software it could not so I must not have deleted something.

  • Need help to find printer setup utility

    I recently bought my first Mac and have slowly been adding to it over the last couple of weeks. Today I added a new printer that I wish to connect wirelessly. The printer is a Brother MFC-3360. I installed the software that came with the printer and had the printer connected directly to the Mac Book. It printed just fine.
    I then disconnected the USB cable and plugged it into the Extreme Base station. It failed to print. According to the Extreme manual, I need to open printer setup utility, located in the utilities folder in the applications folder. Then from there I need to add the printer.
    The problem is, I have no printer setup utility. Is there another place where it might be located?
    Any other ideas will be much appreciated. Thank you!

    Found problem. Went to Sys prefs -> Printers and Fax -> removed my printer and re-installed. Works like a charm.

  • HP Laserjet 6p is not recognized in Printer Setup Utility

    I bought recently used HP Laserjet 6p printer and connected my PB to it's Apple Talk port via AsanteTalk Box. After I installed the HP 6p printer driver (downloaded from the HP site) I've tried several times to find the printer in the Printer Setup Utility but it doesn't appear on it! I've even downloaded a printer driver for MacOS 9 and tried to print in Classic environment but can't find any HP printer in the Chooser. Is there any solution for this problem?
    I'll be very thankful for any suggestions.

    Apple included the Gimp-Print driver "HP Laserjet 6 Series" for that printer. Does that show up?

  • Epson 4800 Ethernet IPP Network Cant Add PRINTER SETUP UTILITY

    Greetings!
    Any known issues?
    Does anyone have this working??
    I am having a time TRYING to ADD a new Epson 4800 printer, Epson Ethernet card onto new Mactel laptop and new quad G5 (both 10.4.7).
    Epson NetConfig Utility sees the printer and set an IPP address.
    However, Apple PRINTER SETUP UTILITY Add IP printer isn't working.
    I had qualified Epson support taking me through the steps...he said some issues with the Intel books, but that doesn't explain why the G5 isn't working.
    Three hours yesterday and I'm back on it later today...any tips/info appreciated.

    Hi all,
    I recently bought an Epson Stylus DX4850 and I'll be damed if I get the thing installed on my Intel based Mac! This is driving me mad, I've been told that it is compatable. I've downloaded all the drivers from the Epson website but when I go to add the printer it's not listed. Does this mean that I need to use a different driver or gimp driver?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated and would prevent me from going insane!
    Many thanks, Jon

  • CAN'T GET PRINTER TO ADD IN PRINTER SETUP UTILITY

    I've recently purchased a Epson DX4850 printer for use on a Mac using 10.3.9. I installed without problem and it worked fine for first 4 days. Then the driver seemed to disappear. I tried to readd through printer setup utility but it came up with message "SERVER ERROR SERVICE UNAVAILABLE". I tried reinstalling, redownloading driver from Epson website, deleting prefernces and reinstalling but it wouldn't work.
    I don't get the message anymore but when I try to add printer it says its found printer driver do I want to refresh the screen but then when I click ok nothing happens.
    Under Epson USB it's blank and under USB it has Stylus driver with a ? and not installed.
    I've had the printer checked and that works fine.
    CAN ANYBODY PLEASE HELP ?

    Sorry Hirsty I can't help but just to go on the list that I"m having similiar problems with my Canon ip4200. I'm running 10.3.7 and can't even find the drivers even though I've installed them from the disc and then from a download. Still won't show up.

  • Printer setup utility freezes when I try to add drivers

    I have an Epson Stylus Photo RX500 all-in-one printer which worked fine until a few weeks ago. My best guess as to why it stopped working is that I let my hard drive fill up and some data got corrupted/overwritten (I've had numerous problems incuding my System Folder becoming 'unblessed' which necessitated a reinstall).
    When I tried to print there were no drivers recognized. If I checked in home>library>printers I could find what appeared to be the driver (Stylus Photo RX500) but opening that would bring up a message it wasn't in my list of printers. Trying to add the printer to the list gave the message that the driver wasn't found. In the Finder the driver was listed as 372KB. In my cloned external HD the same file was listed as 408KB. Copying over the larger file to my internal didn't solve the problem.
    I went to the Epson site and found a driver which was only listed for OS10.2 and a driver to Intel Macs (I have a G4 PB). I downloaded the 10.2 driver and installed it (408KB). Now when I open the printer setup utility EPSON USB is listed as an option but when I click on that the utility freezes. I've tried restarting and repairing permissions but still no go.
    Yoroshiku onegaishimasu. TIA.

    Ohayo gozaimasu,
    I saw what was available on the US site, so went to the Epson UK site, where they show one driver for OSX - PowerPC, for the RX500, it's version 1.9b versus the 1.7 on the US site. The driver is a 7.9mb download. Looking at the other English sites around the world, 1.9b seems to be the lastest OSX PPC driver.
    The link is http://esupport.epson-europe.com/FileDownload.aspx?lng=en-GB&ID=19449&data=6D58D 013F2B22854B9450E1814C134D338E0C605169D8D398A3275D13F8B5BB5
    Perhaps that will work better for you.

  • Printer Setup Utility will not allow new driver to be added

    I just bought a Canon Pixma MP960, installed the drivers and then downloaded the driver from their website. When I go to add a new driver in Printer Setup Utility--i highlight the MP960 connected thru USB, but the 'add' feature is not lit up. When i have it search for new drivers, it detects a new driver, but when I hit 'add'--Printer Setup Utility "unexpectedly quits" every time. The only drivers in there are beta thingies that do not work w/ my printer.
    The Canon tech guy says that there is a problem with my Printer Setup Utility--but i can't seem to find a solution online. I don't know much about macs, but can I update the Printer Utility program or something? help!

    Part of the problem might be if you actually have more than one version of the driver for the printer installed on the computer. Check the drivers at Mac OS X disk/Library/Printers/Canon/ and make sure there is only one plugin for the printer. If you have more than one, trash both and download and install only the driver from Canon that is compatible for Mac OS X 10.4.x. After you install the driver, run Repair Disk Permissions using Disk Utility. If you have only one correct printer driver plugin installed, it should work.
