Color-overlay on gradient in Illustrator CS 5.1

Is there a way to, as in Photoshop's effects gallery, create a color-overlay on an already-done gradient in Illustrator CS 5.1? I've already done the gradient and I have my color, but can't quite make it work.
Does someone know the answer, or are there really easy way to do this that I've failed to notice?
Thanks!

Use the appearance pallete to create another fill, then change the blending mode for the fill on to one of the blending modes (eg: multiply, overlay).

  • Gradients in Illustrator

I'm having trouble trying to figure out how to use gradients in illustrator.  It's so easy in photoshop and flash, but I cannot figure out how to make a gradient with a solid color.  I only want to change the opacity of one of the colors.  How is this done?

    Chris,
There may be easier solutions in newer versions, but you can create a shape with a black/grey/white gradient to put on top, select both, and use Make Opacity Mask in the Transparency flyout. Depending on the settings, black or white yields full transparency, the other full opacity.
The gradient to use is created by clicking the Gradient box at the bottom of the Toolbox and setting the properties in the Gradient palette, possibly also applying the Gradient Tool.

  • PhotoShop Color Overlay  for  Interactive Indesign Document

    Hello world!
Im trying to  figure  out  how to do what the  following  email  says:
"We typically do them like this – a SketchUp model, with color overlays done in Photoshop.  We then use the color overlay document to create the InDesign links for the code document."
This is for a city planning code. Im not  very  proficient on PS  but I do use  illustrator daily.  The image attached  shows what I suppose are the color overlays from PS. I havent found anywhere how these overlays can be links... Am I just confused? Please  help.
[  i thought of  just  using multiply and the  pen tool on  illustrator to color the  exported  sketchup scenes,no linking to  anything though]

  • Any way color overlay could be carried over from psd to Reflow?

    Hello,
We are really excited about Edge Reflow in the office, but one pain is that layer effects in the psd don't carry over to the Reflow file. A lot of times we designers use color overlay on things like copy in various parts of the layout to see different comps and make the best design solutions. It would be great if we didn't have to change the color of the type before running the generator... Am I missing a setting? If this isn't something we can change on our end, are you guys working on it?
    Thanks,
    Marc

okay I see that this is getting little more complicated.
So now I see it isn't anything with windows.
I do edit the picture in raw and it looks good and save it as psd then when I open it in photoshop it looks right and if I select view-proof colors then it comes out with that crazy color as it will look after I save it.
So going from raw where i edit it looks good then after I save it even if I save it there as jpg and open on photoshop it alway changes when it is checked on proof color.
Is anyone on here that know whay this is happening? how do I make the pictures stay the same after I edit them in raw?

  • Skin smoothing stopped working and color overlay

    Hi All,
    Been tearing my hair out.
The skin smoothing tool has stopped working completely across all projects. If I select "color overlay" in the gears menu, sometimes the existing smooth brush strokes appear in red,.. but mostly they don't.
** I can't add any new brush strokes ** they simply do not appear. Interestingly, if you select brush strokes you can see the strokes but the actual skin smooth filter isn't applied to the mask! WEIRD! You can also select invert and the filter is applied to the whole image - but you cannot manipulate the mask at all.
I've reinstalled Aperture and I've also rebuilt the library but nothing seems to work.
Background: I'm running Aperture 3.4.3 on Macbook Retina with latest OS, 16Gb/500SSD - nothing else and I'm shooting with a Nikon D800 in RAW.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? I have a sweaty model that needs airbrushing ASAP!
    Thanks,
    Matthew

Matthew, does it work, if you use a different Aperture library? Then repair your Aperture library.
If it does not even work for a different Aperture library, try working from a different user account. Can you use the brushes there? If yes, remove your Aperture User Preferences from your User Library:
The user library is hidden.  To reveal it, use the Finder's "Go" menu.
Click somewhere on your empty Desktop to bring the Finder forward, then you'll see "Go" in the Finder's main menu bar.
Then hold down the options key ⌥ until "library" appears in the drop down menu. Click Library to open.  Remove the file
    your Home Folder/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Aperture.plist.

  • How do i change a color when doing color overlay?

I finally figured how to apply the color overlay and the first picture I did my son was wearing a coral shirt so I made the pic a B/W photo and wanted his shirt to pop with the color it was.  So it actually worked but then I wanted to do another photo with the same idea but everything is this coral color I thought it new to make the shir that color since that is what it was.  I thought that when I go to use the brusg it would pull the color of that item instead everything is coral.  I didn't set it to that color and I can't figure out to change it.
Please help me.  I paid a lot of money for this software and I haven't been able to do what I want.

    Agree with Kirby, as always.
And I believe that the OP has changed the brushes to color overlay thinking that you need this change to erase the black and white.
Simply apply the B/W adjustment, click on the gear in the B/W brick and choose "brush black and white away." You do not have to change the brush to color overlay. That is there just to help you see where you've applied brush strokes.
Change from color overlay back to none.
Let us know how that works for you.
Also have a look at this section of the manual.

  • Can  not get any color swatches into Gradient Swatch panel.

I've tried dragging, clicking dragging and only get the circle/line-thru-it.  And there is no New Gradient Swatch option anywhere that I can see.
Listen:  I've now spent over 4 hours online -- today alone! -- reading instructions that simply do not work. After 4 years of InDesign work and design changes made because I can't get two colors to simply gradient, its time for this function to work for me.

You have at least two possibilites to add gradients to your swatches:
    1. Select an Object with a gradient applied. (Take care to have the gradient part selcted in the stroke/fill part in the tool panel.) Got to the Swatch Panel and in the menu of the panel select "New Gradient Swatch…"
    or
    2. In the swatch panel menu got to "New gradient Swatch…", edit the color stoppers, add some ore remove some and click on the add or ok button.

  • Question About Color's and Gradients

    Hi all,
I have a question about color swatches and gradients.
I am curious to know, if I have 2 color swatches that I make into a gradient color, is it posible to change the tint of each indivdual color in that gradient and have that applied to the gradient without having to adjust the gradients opacity.
The reason that I'm asking this is because in creating a project I found that the colors that I chose for to make my gradient from my swatches were to dark, and while I can adjust each one's tint to my liking (if the object they were applied to was going to be a solid color) but that doesn't seem to apply to the overall gradient.
I hope that makes sense, I know that this was something that was able to be accomplished in quark and was wondering if I can do something similar.

If you double click your gradient swatch (after adding it to the swatches)
Then click a colour stop in the gradient, and then change the drop down menu to CMYK (or rgb)
And you can alter the percentages there. It's not much use for spot colours but it's a start.
But making tint swatches would be a good start anyway.
At least then when you double click the gradient (in the swatches) to edit it you can choose from CMYK, RGB, LAB, or Swatches and adjust each colour stop to your liking.

  • Color overlay on opaque pixels of transparant image

    Hi everyone!
I'm having a little problem here... I have loaded a gif image (a bufferedimage) in my program and I would like to have a color overlay on it. However, the overlay should only reside on the opaque pixels and not on the transparant parts of the image.
I have looked for about an hour on this board to find the solution to my problem, but I haven't found anything useful. I did find the following, but it's not for a bufferedimage :(
    int pixels[][] = grabPixels(sprite);
// 2) Place the opaque pixels in a polygon
         Polygon poly = new Polygon();
         for (int y = 0; y < spriteH; y++) // y coordinate
              for (int x = 0; x < spriteW; x++) // x coordinate
                   if (pixels[y][x] != TRANSPARENT) {
                        poly.addPoint(x,y);
}This code creates a polygon with the opaque pixels of the image I think. Too bad it's not for a bufferedimage!
    Thanks ahead!
    Jens

Thanks, Randy. That's ingenious, but it doesn't seem to work very well, since the finished image looks like Frankenstein's monster, with half the guy's face looking one way and the other half another way. But ingenious.
I don't mind using the limit effect if that is the best way to deal with my little problem. Just trying to get a consensus on what to do, after I put a contract out on this shooter.
    Thanks.

  • Photoshop CS6 Extended x64 Win7 bug, color overlay layer effect

I created a simple layer shape using the elipse shape tool, and applied a color overlay (blue) layer effect to that shape. The applied color overlay doesn't fill the entire shape (see image) making it look like the shape has a very wide stroke applied to it (it doesn't). If I "copy merged" the pasted copy is a rasterized version of the problematic overlay. If I rasterize the layer, the fill then covers the entire shape.
Jpeg below. Shape is black, color overlay is blue. There is no other effect applied. Blend mode normal, opacity 100%. The image upload won't let me attach the layered PSD file, but I'd be happy to provide it for troubleshooting.
If it matters, I'm running PS CS6 under Creative Cloud.

Good call, there is indeed a thick stroke set for the shape tool. Thank you.
But that answer leaves me with another question.
Apparently applying a color overlay effect only applied to the object's fill. Why does the entire object, stroke and all, go blue when the layer is rasterized? If that's not a bug, it's at least irrational.
I added an inner glow layer effect and the same behavior applies. The stroke is not changed by the layer effect, but when rasterized (except via copy merged) the stroke disappears and the layer effects are applied to the full diameter of the circle and the stroke.

  • Color changes when pasting from Illustrator to Photoshop

I have set both PS and Illustrator (both latest versions) to "North America Web/Internet".
Both documents are RGB and have the sRGB IEC61966-1 profile.
When I copy a square in Illustrator and paste it into PS
RGB 19,78,110 (the color in Illustrator) changes to RGB 18,78,109.
It doesn't matter whether I paste it as pixel, smart object or shape layer. The sampled color differs from that in Illustrator.
Doesn't anyone have a solution to this?
It's really unnerving when you do web mockups in Illustrator and then copy/paste to PS for image creation.

This topic is similar to a post today in Mac Photoshop forum. When you copy+paste an Illustrator object with 3D effect from a RGB Illustrator file into an RGB Photoshop document, you get a quite an extreme color de-saturation (looked like a bright blue going dull from RGB to CMYK). Only occurs with active 3D effect. If you Expand Appearance, Flatten Transparency or Rasterize, then the original color is maintained.

  • Layer styles - color overlay

At my current work our designer using color overlay everywhere, instead of just change color, saying it is more comfortable to him. But when using project parfait it does not see color overlay, for example on shapes and fonts.

    Hello marchenko alexandr,
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Would you be willing to share an example PSD so we can check it out here?
    Thanks!

  • Thoughts on automation for gradient mesh illustrations....

So I've been looking around at various tutorials on creating gradient mesh illustrations. The general theme that keeps popping up is how time consuming it is to colourize the mesh, point by point. Some clever programmer out there could surely find some way of automating this process no?
The way I see this potentially working would be to initiate a filter of some kind that would take a selected object, in this case a gradient mesh, collect all of the x/y coordinates of all of the points into an array. Then, using that array of points, one by one, determining what the visible CMYK values are of the pixel that is below and then setting that point to said colour. Sure, the user would likely have to go back and adjust some points manually here and there where a point is on the edge of a fold between a light and dark area - but I have to think that the bulk of the points would be visually correct on the first pass.
This can't possibly be an insurmountable task? Clearly well beyond my skills but if such a thing could be created it would drastically speed up the illustration process associated with this tool.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
    Jeff

...and aside from what Monika said, consider the limitations of transparency handling in web image formats as well as what impact the differences in handling of transparancies between browsers may have on the web site design.

  • Photoshop CC rendering crazy color overlays in file

Photoshop is doing some insane things to a file we're working on, it's adding multi-colored, random blocks of color overlays all throughout the file. We'll close the file and reopen it, and it's fine. Then it starts doing it again! Has anyone else ever encountered this? The file size is aroud 470MB, on a 2013 Macbook Pro that has 8GB RAM/500GB hardrive, OS Mountain Lion. Attached is a screenshot. To me, it seems like the file may be corrupted somehow but PS not giving an error message.

If this is just the one file, then you may be right about it being corrupted.  At 470Mb I'm guessing that it has lots of layers, in which case I'd be looking carefully at blend modes, but that doesn't gel with it being intermittent.
Going just from the screen shot, I'd be wondering about video card driver, but you'd expect that to affect all files.
Sometimes Photoshop can get into a muddle with layered documents, and things don't work how they should.  I have always found that duplicating the layers to a new document fixes that.   Select all layers, right click and choose Duplicate and then New.
It's an interesting anomaly though, so please come back and tell us if and how you fix it.

  • Why can't I change the color in a gradient?

In the gradient window, the little boxes indicate the correct color, but the gradient itself only displays in black and white.

Create a new gradient from the fly out menu that opens from  the right side in the Swatches Panel.
From there you can define the gradient ramp
Then you can apply the created gradient by going in the gradient panel.
    Hope this helps !!!
